Robert Zemeckis' 2007 animated film version of "Beowulf," based on the Old English poem, was one of the earlier films to make such extensive use of then-novel motion-capture CGI technology. Zemeckis seemed to feel that mo-cap was the future of filmmaking, and had previously used it to animate CGI versions of Tom Hanks in his 2004 Christmas film "The Polar Express." After "Beowulf," Zemeckis kept on experimenting, using it in his 2009 animated film "A Christmas Carol," and then again in his doll-based biopic "Welcome to Marwen." Zemeckis has, in the last 20 years, mostly stuck with unusual tech experiments that stretch what the medium of cinema can do. Some of his experiments are successful (the 3D in "The Walk" is some of the best ever) and some aren't ("Here" sucked), but one can at least admire him for trying to reach higher.

Filming has recently begun on Christopher Nolan's next on-screen feat, a take on Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey. The film has a murderer's row of talented folks in it, including Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland. And in the first photo taken on set, the actor can be seen at the helm of a ship, with shaggy hair and what looks like a full-on Frodo from The Lord of the Rings costume. At least that's what fans online have been saying since the image first made its way onto X (the artist formerly known as Twitter).
After looking at the photo, you might also agree with the observation, because, well...Holland already looked like he could have been a main Hobbit character or extra (had he been old enough to be cast in the Peter Jackson films all those years ago) with aplomb. So when you put him in a...

Vikings have been a staple of fiction for decades, with numerous novels, movies, and shows featuring the iconic warriors. Recently, Vikings and its sequel series, Vikings: Valhalla, thrilled fans with their depictions of Norse culture and the clash of civilizations. With the latter series concluding in 2024, many viewers are, understandably, eager for more stories set in the world of Vikings. For these fans, the 1999 action movie, The 13th Warrior, could be a perfect fit.
Starring Antonio Banderas as Ahmad Ibn Fadlan, a Muslim Ambassador of the Abbasid Caliphate, The 13th Warrior also offers compelling portrayals of Viking culture and how they conflict with people of other societies. While it received poor reviews when it premiered and failed in theaters, the movie developed a cult following in the decades after its release. Thanks to fantastic sets and costumes, along with great performances and directing, The 13th Warrior overcame criticism of its simple plot,...

New allegations of sexual misconduct and assault have surfaced against Neil Gaiman, the best-selling fantasy author whose books Good Omens, American Gods and The Sandman have become TV series.
On Monday, New York Magazine published a cover story titled, “There Is No Safe Word,” with writer Lila Shapiro’s piece detailing new claims against Gaiman based on interviews with eight women. This follows the July 2024 release of the Tortoise Media podcast Master, which reported earlier graphic accusations by five women against the celebrated genre writer. (Four of those women were among those who spoke for the New York Magazine piece.)
One of the claims comes from Scarlett Pavlovich, a former babysitter for Gaiman and his ex-wife Amanda Palmer, who described being sexually assaulted in February 2022 by Gaiman in New Zealand in a backyard bathtub.

From his role as a protective father in the action film Greenland all the way to the haunted singer in the movie adaptation of Phantom of the Opera, there is no role that Butler can't handle. In addition to his previous work, his upcoming role of Stoick the Vast in the highly anticipated How to Train Your Dragon live-action film is sure to keep him on audiences' minds throughout 2025 and beyond. “If you’ve got the time and the stomach for it, I’ve got a story for you,” is the first line of the new trailer for the big-screen adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s In the Lost Lands. The new trailer dropped on Jan. 8 ahead of the film’s March 7 release, per Entertainment Weekly. Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil) star in the new film based on the Game of Thrones author’s short story.
In the action/adventure/fantasy film, Jovovich plays Gray Alys, a powerful sorceress. Set many years into the future, after a catastrophic war, a queen sends Gray into the wild Lands, where the laws of nature are thrown out the window. On a quest to free her people from terrible oppression, she finds a guide in Boyce, played by Bautista, who is a drifter but is adept at navigating the Lost Lands.

Multiple actors appearing in Gladiator II have been criticized for what accents they use for their characters, which are all inherently inaccurate. Gladiator II picks up 16 years after Russell Crowe's Maximus' tragic tale of revenge; Connie Nielsen returns as Lucilla, Paul Mescal plays her now-grown son, and Pedro Pascal is the Roman general who is the new target of the protagonist's vengeance. Yet Denzel Washington decidedly emerged as the best performance of the six main Gladiator II actors, playing the scheming Macrinus.
This is despite controversy surrounding Washington's accent in Gladiator II. The actor decided to use his own New York accent, rejecting choosing an African dialect for his character. Washington's reasoning for this was that there was no way of knowing what the historical Gladiator II figure would have actually sounded like, and he worried his speech would simply be awful. However, Washington's response to this Gladiator 2...

Long before J.R.R. Tolkien published The Lord of the Rings in the 1950s and The Hobbit in the 1930s, the author had an academic career that heavily influenced the writing of his epic fantasy. As a student and then professor of literature, Tolkien would have been exposed to Anglo-Saxon poems like Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. While it falls in and out of popular culture, Beowulf is fairly well-known in academic circles as a seminal work of the genre of epic poetry. Attempts have been made to adapt the hero Beowulf's story for the screen to varying degrees of success. But it could be argued that none has done it true justice.

Beowulf is one of the foundational texts of English literature, an epic poem about a warrior named Beowulf who takes on a fearsome monster named Grendel, then Grendel's mother, and finally a mighty dragon. In 1971, author John Gardner wrote Grendel, which tells the story of Beowulf from the monster's point of view. Grendel imagines the titular character as a thoughtful, angry outcast who doesn't know how to fit into the world.
Grendel has been adapted to the screen before, but the story has resonated down through the decades and writer-director Robert D. Krzykowski is taking a crack at it for modern audiences. The new movie will feature Jeff Bridges as Grendel; Bryan Cranston as King Hrothgar, whose court Grendel harries; T Bone Burnett as the Shaper, whose music and tales drive Grendel to fits of existential madness; and Dave Bautista as Beowulf, the warrior who puts an end to Grendel's rampage.

The mere mention of Grendel the classic monster from the Old English, Anglo-Saxon era epic poem, Beowulf is enough to unlock a portal buried deep within the brain of every former English student. Since its introduction to the oral tradition, the creature at the heart of Robert D. Krzykowski's cinematic take has captivated the hearts and minds of humans for thousands of years.
So it's no surprise that new details (via The Hollywood Reporter) alongside images from a Collider exclusive reveal that Grendel, as played by Jeff Bridges, is going in a deeply philosophical and darkly fantastical direction; a perfect fit for the Jim Henson Creature Shop's interpretation based on the 1971 John Gardner novel.

The upcoming live action movie from director Robert D. Krzykowski will adapt the same-titled 1971 novel from John Gardner, with Jeff Bridges starring as Grendel alongside Dave Bautista as Beowulf, and Bryan Cranston as King Hrothgar.
The cast also includes Thomasin McKenzie as Queen Wealhtheow, Aidan Turner as Unferth and T Bone Burnett as the Shaper, “who will also provide original songs for the film.”

The word “epic” gets thrown around a lot, but in the case of Grendel, a live-action retelling of John Gardner’s 1971 novel of the same name, it’s not hyperbole. Writer-director Robert D. Krzykowski adapted the book, a modern classic that retells the old English epic poem Beowulf from the perspective of the monster Grendel, who terrorizes the kingdom of Hrothgar of the Danes for 12 years.
The cast is epic, too, with Jeff Bridges as the titular monster, Bryan Cranston as King Hrothgar, Dave Bautista as the warrior Beowulf and T Bone Burnett as the blind, harp-playing Shaper.
Jim Henson’s Creature Shop is doing the creature work and design. Filming is set to begin in Europe next year.
Palisades Park Pictures is handling international sales; CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group co-rep rights for North America.

“More effort than it’s worth” possibly represents the harshest 5 words that can be strung together in the English language. For a film, that statement guarantees an immediate death sentence. In the case of Antonio Banderas’ The 13th Warrior, it spelled the extinction of an entire genre: the Muslim hero archetype.

The best Viking movies transport audiences to the world of the 9th to 11th centuries for bloodlustful battle-filled adventures with some of the most notorious warriors in history. These movies tell the story of Vikings, those polytheistic Norse warriors who sailed the seas, pillaging and conquering. In the world of streaming services, the tales of Viking warriors have become much more popular. With TV shows like Vikings and Last Kingdom, there is a clear lack of Viking movies compared to other subgenres of historical drama.
Viking stories go back thousands of years, with the brave and violent warriors blazing a trail through history, creating an exciting backdrop for any movie or TV show. Thanks possibly to the success of shows like Vikings and its spinoff, Vikings: Valhalla, this unique time and place in history became popular again though the best Viking movies show that there's always been an interest in the longboat-sailing warriors.

Many potentially great superhero movies have failed to materialise over the years, though George Miller's Justice League: Mortal remains among the most intriguing.
Only bits and pieces have ever been revealed about the project (an early version of the screenplay is floating around online if you search hard enough), including the fact the Mad Max director considered shooting it completely in motion capture, similar to Beowulf.
Unfortunately, Justice League: Mortal ended up being a victim of the 2007/2008 writer's strike, though it got far enough along to assemble an impressive cast of young actors. Zack Snyder's 2006 film "300," based on the comic book by Frank Miller, tells a hyper-stylized and not-the-least-bit-historically-accurate version of the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC) wherein 300 Spartan soldiers managed to fend off anywhere from 120,000 to 300,000 soldiers of the Persian Empire for three full days. Both Miller's book and Snyder's film present the Spartans as teeth-gashing, testosterone-spitting, Spam-scented beefcake slabs comprised of nothing but pectoral muscles, testicles, and homophobia. They speak in "Join the Marines" recruiting slogans and disparage anything that's not at least 4000% more masculine than a two-ton bag of Tom Jones' chest hair.
Speaking of chest hair, none of the Spartans have any, happy to parade around their cartoonishly cut physiques as if they all possess a severe shirt allergy. Leading the charge is King Leonidas (Gerard Butler), a man who cannot help but add multiple exclamation marks after every sentence he speaks.

Dave Bautista and Jeff Bridges lead a stacked cast which will flip the Beowulf story and presumably also feature a puppet or two in the mix.
Here’s a fine story to kick off the week. The legendary Jim Henson Company is set to make Grendel, a live action version of Beowulf, the epic tale of heroes, monsters and the clashes between them.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Palisades Park Pictures is launching sales for the project at the upcoming Cannes marketplace. We’ve seen the tale of Beowulf rendered on the silver screen before of course, with Robert Zemeckis' 2007 version re-telling the Old English epic poem through the medium of computer animation.
Although that film is sometimes floated as an example in debates about the merits or shortcomings of CGI experimentation, it boasted an impressive cast that included Ray Winstone, Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins, Robin Wright and Crispin Glover...

The story of Beowulf and Grendel is one of the most famous stories in English literature. The epic Beowulf is one of the most important works of English literature in general and it has been an inspiration for many authors over the centuries. We have also had numerous adaptations of the work, including the animated film from 2007, but all of them focused on the heroic tale of Beowulf, the hero of the story. But, the story also has another important character – Grendel – the monster and Beowulf’s rival in the story.
Grendel is finally going to get the chance to tell you his side of the story, as the movie Grendel will be released soon, with Palisades Park Pictures is launching international sales ahead of Cannes.

When we reviewed Mythic Battles: Pantheon just a month or two ago, I had no idea that soon-to-follow would be a newer, more refined take on the divine conflict genre that I had immediately fallen in love with. Mythic Battles: Pantheon is brilliant, and for me, the Greek mythology setting is perhaps the absolute pinnacle – but Mythic Battles: Ragnarok is more refined, more balanced and arguably – even though I enjoy the Norse mythos less – even better. The fundamentals of gameplay are the same, but you can see where four or five years of feedback has been invested in Monolith’s immense follow-up.
Mythic Battles: Ragnarok shares the same setting as Mythic Battles: Pantheon, with the idea that some cataclysmic event has rendered the Gods down to Earth, making them mortal and forcing them to fight for divine stones in order to reclaim their power. As in Pantheon, players choose a points value,...

Some PG-13 movies, such as Poltergeist and Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom, contained dark and scary elements that were too intense for young audiences. Beowulf, an animated film for adults, managed to dodge an R-rating despite featuring violent and sexual content. Movies like Jaws and The Ring used clever editing and filmmaking techniques to create a terrifying atmosphere, earning their scares within the confines of a PG rating.
The MPAA is the organization that gives movies their ratings based on their content; however, some brutal movies that should arguably have been R-rated snuck by with a lower rating. It makes sense that filmmakers and studios would want their movies to have lower ratings, as it means more people are allowed to go see the movie, but this can often lead to frightened children and upset parents. Whether it's dark subject matter or frightening imagery, some PG-13 movies feel like...

‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ Review: Mortality Casts a Shadow on Otherwise Amusing Animated Sequel
This review of “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” was first published on November 26.
It’s been 11 years since the last “Puss in Boots” movie, and 12 years since the last proper installment of the original blockbuster “Shrek” movie franchise. So it makes sense that this new kids movie would want to grow up with its former audience. But “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” may have overshot that mark: The latest fairy-tale comedy adventure is all about how living in an old folks’ home is tragic and depressing and only slightly preferable to our inevitable, terrifying deaths.
Unless, of course, you find a wishing star!
Um… yay?
“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” stars Antonio Banderas as the voice of the titular hero, a feline in fabulous footwear who has had an impressive number of daredevil adventures. At the start of the movie he’s usurped a corrupt governor’s...

Angelina Jolie movies list is so loaded it’s hard to pick which is her very best and which are not so cool. My foolproof technique for doing this for any actor is to check what critics and audiences are saying across multiple channels. That’s exactly how I arrived at ranking Angelina Jolie’s movies from best to worst. In the end, you can hardly go wrong with the multiple award winning actress. Even the worst movies on the list feel somewhat watchable because of her graceful and charming personality. There are scarcely a handful of actors that come close to Jolie’s reputation.

Spoiler Alert: this post includes spoilers for Barbarian.
Content Warning: the following article contains discussions of sexual violence.
The original design for the Barbarian villain, The Mother, would have given away the twist that she is not the film's true monster. The Mother is introduced in Barbarian in an incredibly shocking fashion by appearing out of the shadows and killing Bill Skarsgård's character, Keith, by bashing his head against a wall. On the surface, The Mother is the typical horror movie antagonist. However, it is soon revealed that The Mother is the result of decades of multigenerational incest by Barbarian's serial rapist Frank, played by Richard Brake. 1. Aradia (The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina) Sabrina is a total badass, and we're huge fans, but she'll still be learning about her heritage and what she can do when this show begins.
