It follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit.

The “Dune” prequel series, set more than 10,000 years before the events of Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” movies, follows the origins of the Bene Gesserit, the secretive order of powerful witches that influence Arrakis’ politics behind the scenes.

Inspired by the novel “Sisterhood of Dune” by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, the series follows the leader of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, Valya Harkonnen (played by Emily Watson), and Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams), who team up to combat forces that threaten humankind.

Both are ancestors from long ago of the evil House Harkonnen, which betrays Paul Atreides and his father in the “Dune” movies. Mark Strong plays Emperor Javicco Corrino and Sarah-Sofie Boussnina is his daughter Princess Ynez.

HBO will continue following the Sisterhood of Dune: Prophecy.

The series will return for a second season, showrunner Alison Schapker announced at a press conference Thursday. The renewal comes a few days ahead of the show’s first-season finale, which debuts Dec. 22 on HBO and Max.

According to HBO, the premiere episode of Dune: Prophecy has racked up 15 million viewers worldwide on Max since its Nov. 17 debut.

Per Tubi, 2018's Mortal Engines is set to join the streaming platform's library of free films and television shows on January 1. This will see Mortal Engines become part of the Tubi catalog alongside other fan-favorite sci-fi and fantasy films, including 1985's The Goonies and 2015's Jupiter Ascending, both of which will be making the move to the platform on the same day.

The latest prequel series in the massive Dune franchise details the origins of the Bene Gesserit and chronicles the early steps the secretive sisterhood took in steering the trajectory of the Imperium from the shadows. Unlike Denis Villeneuve’s films, Dune: Prophecy takes place in the worlds beyond Arrakis and its desert sands. In fact, there’s hardly a worm in sight. What the series does possess is an array of various villains, all vying for ultimate control and power. In the show’s first episode, viewers were introduced to Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), who heartlessly used his “gift” to murder Lord Pruwet Richeseand (Charlie Hodson-Prior) and is believed to have done the same to Reverend Mother Kasha Jinjo (Jihae). As such, he’s clearly the primary villain of the series, or so viewers might have initially thought.

Episode 2 of Dune: Prophecy closed out with a face-off between what are widely viewed as the show's most interesting characters, and it looks like the shocking developments that followed have taken their toll on Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson).

Towards the end of "Two Wolves," Valya returned to Salusa Secundus to find herself confronted by the enigmatic Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), who had previously admitted to using his strange pyrotechnic abilities to murder both Revered Mother Kasha (Jinhae) and the young Pruwet Richese (Charlie Hodson-Prior).

Upon learning that Hart - who apparently survived being swallowed by a sandworm on Arrakis - had made it his mission to wipe out the Sisterhood entirely, Valya uses "the Voice" to command the soldier to plunge his own dagger into his throat. Incredibly, Hart manages to resist the order.

Following Denis Villeneuve's epic sci-fi adventure Dune: Part 2, The Bene Gesserit's origin story is the subject of Dune: Prophecy on Max. Premiering on November 17, 2024, the six-part backstory concerns Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams) establishing the Bene Gesserit, a socio-religious sect of women whose members gain supernatural strengths and powers through disciplined mental conditioning.

Set 10,000 years before the events of Dune, the pilot introduces viewers to a mysterious soldier named Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel). Desmond Hart does not appear in the Dune source novels and is solely created for the TV origin story, leading many to wonder who he is, his motives, and what special powers and superhuman strengths he uses to advance his mission.

Desmond Hart is perhaps the most intriguing character so far in Dune: Prophecy, played by Travis Fimmel, who perfectly embodies the seasoned warrior. In addition to Fimmel, the cast of Dune: Prophecy includes Emily Watson, Mark Strong, and Jodhi May. In just the first two episodes of Dune: Prophecy, Fimmel's Desmond successfully persuades Strong and May's characters, the Emperor and Empress of the Imperium, to side with him. On the other hand, Desmond also frightens Watson's Valya Harkonnen, the powerful Mother Superior of the Bene Gesserit.

After an uneven season premiere that had a bit too much heavy lifting to do in the lore department, Dune: Prophecy finds its sea legs in "Two Wolves."

We start with the aftermath of Revenand Mother Kasha's (Jihae) death. Somehow, she was burned from the inside out from several planets away by the mysterious Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), who's thrown the royal family for a loop over on Salusa Secundus. “Dune: Prophecy” is picking up the pace in Episode 2 — and gradually revealing more about the show’s villain (and antihero).

After expositional duty and climactic finale to Episode 1, “Two Wolves” is distinctly more focused, written by Kor Adana and directed by John Cameron. In the series premiere of Dune: Prophecy, "The Hidden Hand," we meet a number of characters playing their part in the never-ending battle to control the Imperium. Reverance Mother Kasha (Jihae) is the personal truthsayer of the emperor himself (Mark Strong), and is working behind the scenes to get the emperor's daughter Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) into a position where she can one day become empress herself. Ynez is sympathetic towards the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, of which Kasha is a part. And the Bene Gesserit are nothing if not self-advancing.

To that end, Kasha has talked the emperor into letting Ynez marry a young boy named Pruwet Richese (Hodson Prior), the heir to a powerful house. By the end of the episode, both Kasha and Preset are dead, burned from the inside out by new arrival Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), who wants to lessen the influence of the Bene Gesserit throughout the known universe.

“Dune: Prophecy” debuted to a lukewarm audience, on par with “The Penguin.”

The series premiere of “Dune: Prophecy” brought in 1.2 million viewers across HBO and Max on Sunday, according to Warner Bros. Discovery internal data. Viewership for the debut episode of “Dune: Prophecy” was on par with “The Penguin,” whose series premiere scored 1.4 million cross-platform viewers on a Thursday, before “The Batman” spinoff series moved to Sundays.

Viewership for the debut episode of “Dune: Prophecy” saw a 75% uptick the day after its premiere, growing to reach 2.1 million viewers across platforms.

“The Penguin,” which aired its finale just a week before “Dune: Prophecy” took over HBO’s coveted Sunday night spot, grew to 2.1 million viewers for its finale, marking a series high. Its series premiere went on to draw 18 million viewers in the U.

Dune: Prophecy, the HBO prequel series set ten thousand years before Denis Villeneuve's Dune movies, premiered its first episode and already left viewers with plenty of mysteries to consider. Led by Emily Watson and Olivia Williams (who play Valya and Tula Harkonnen respectively), the show follows the origins of the Bene Gesserit and how their rise intermingles with House Corrino's rule of the Imperium. Building a genre series from scratch is tough. Millions of devoted fans and detailed source material can’t guarantee an audience for shows like “Game of Thrones” or “The Rings of Power” — or for their new cousin, “Dune: Prophecy.”

Developed by Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker, this prequel to Denis Villenueve’s “Dune” film series doesn’t require watching either movie. As established in Episode 1, “The Hidden Hand,” written by Ademu-John and directed by Anna Foerster, these events took place more than 10,000 years before Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya found themselves on the planet Arrakis, focused on the mysterious Sisterhood known as the Bene-Gesserit.

How do you make one big-budget streaming series stand out from all the rest? Well, ending your premiere on one heck of a shocker is definitely a tried-and-true method to get tongues wagging. We've seen that approach before work like gangbusters on the biggest of all fantasy shows in 2011, when the "Game of Thrones" premiere faithfully recreated one of the most unexpected twists in author George R.R. Martin's novels by having young Bran shoved out of that tower and left for dead. Given how much "Dune: Prophecy" feels indebted to HBO's flagship series, perhaps it's not so surprising to see the show's creative team attempt to recreate a very similar moment ... though by upping the horrific nature of this particular murder.

As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, the review embargo for Dune: Prophecy lifted earlier today and the response to the six-episode HBO series is so far mostly positive. While this is technically a prequel to the Dune movies, Denis Villeneuve isn't involved and the massive time gap means there will be no crossovers.

For the most part, it sounds like Dune: Prophecy is a worthy addition to the sci-fi franchise, even if it doesn't necessarily break the mould. For fans of Villeneuve's groundbreaking movies, that's likely to come as something of a let-down.

In The Hollywood Reporter's review, it's said, "Even though it’s part of a brand, Dune: Prophecy has lots of elements to introduce, and the series is already a slow, sometimes lugubrious build. But I found myself becoming increasingly invested as it went along. Maybe by the end of the first season, I’ll be hooked.

While viewers await Denis Villeneuve’s third Dune film, Max’s Dune: Prophecy series will take audiences back to the world of Frank Herbert’s science fiction novels.

The prequel series takes place long before the characters in Villeneuve’s films fight for control of the galaxy. Co-produced with Legendary Television, the series explores foundations for several key names, figures and families in the universe of Herbert’s books.

HBO has just dropped the official trailer for Dune: Prophecy (via SFFGazette.com) following a star-studded panel at the New York Comic-Con. It's also been revealed that the six-episode series premieres on Sunday, November 17 at 9pm Et/Pt.

If you're unfamiliar with Frank Herbert's Dune books, you may struggle to make sense of what you see here. There's a great deal of political intrigue, though, with the spotlight put primarily on Bene Gesserit's mysterious origins.

Talking to Screen Rant earlier today, executive producer Allison Schapkey explained how this iteration of the group differs from what we've seen in Denis Villeneuve's Dune movies.

"I think when you see the Bene Gesserit in the films, first of all, you're really seeing their forward face. They cultivate such a mystique, such a mystery. And they're out there being ruthless and decisive and powerful and trying to play every angle and manipulate every possible outcome.

Today at New York Comic-Con, HBO released a shiny new trailer for Dune: Prophecy, a spinoff of its hugely successful Dune movie franchise from Denis Villeneuve. And like Harkonnens dealing out spice, the studio has benevolently also released this trailer online so that we all might partake of its wonder and gasp in awe.

Dune: Prophecy now finally has a release date, and audiences don't have long to wait before the Max series debuts. Developed by Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker, the upcoming Dune series takes place 10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides, chronicling the creation of the Bene Gesserit order through the eyes of Harkonnen sisters Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula (Olivia Williams).
