En La Gang, Ayman, un adolescente de origen marroquí, es invitado por Sara, de origen catalán, a su fiesta de 16 cumpleaños en la misma casa donde la madre de Ayman trabaja como empleada doméstica. 12 features and 10 docs will be pitched Trieste co-pro forum next month.

New features from Ukraine’s Maryna Stepanska, Brazil’s Marcelo Gomes and Italy’s Letizia Lamartire are among the 22 projects selected for Trieste’s When East Meets West (Wemw) co-production forum which takes place January 22-25.

The Wemw line-up comprises 12 features and 10 documentaries from 19 countries, having received a record 410 submissions.

Javier Bardem in The Good Boss Photo: Courtesy of San Sebastian Film Festival Fernando León de Aranoa has secured a record 20 nominations for his film The Good Boss at this year's Goyas - the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars.

The satire stars Javier Bardem, who is in the running for Best Actor.

Icíar Bollaín’s terrorism drama Maixabel, meanwhile, secured 14 nominations while Pedro Almodóvar’s Parallel Mothers - about two mothers who give birth on the same day - has eight nods.

The Goya awards ceremony will be held on February 12 in Valencia.

The Good Boss, directed by Fernando León de Aranoa and starring Javier Bardem, led the Goya nominations from the Spanish Film Academy with 20 nods, an all-time record.

Already selected as this year’s Spanish Best International Feature Film submission for the Oscars, Fernando León de Aranoa’s dark workplace comedy “The Good Boss,” starring Javier Bardem, has set a new record for most Spanish Academy Goya Award nominations with 20, ahead of Icíar Bollaín’s standout Basque drama “Maixabel” with 14 and Pedro Almodóvar’s “Parallel Mothers,” which secured eight.

The 20 nominations include: Best picture, director, original screenplay, original music, lead actor, three nominations for supporting actor, supporting actress, two nominations for best new male actor and one for best new female actor, production design, cinematography, editing, art direction, costume design, makeup, sound design and special effects. It’s a total which breaks an almost 30-year-old record held by Imanol Uribe’s “Numbered Days,” which received 19 nominations in 1994.

León’s latest, produced by The Mediapro Studio and Reposado PC, is a return to a fruitful partnership between the director and his leading man.

Málaga Film Festival’s 24th Edition Opens and Closes with Feature Comedies ‘El Cover,’ ‘García y García’

Feature comedies “El Cover,” the directorial debut of actor Secun de la Rosa, and Ana Murugarren’s “García y García,” will respectively open and close Spain’s 24th Malaga Film Festival, the country’s biggest event dedicated exclusively to films and TV in Spain and Latin America.

Running June 3-13, the festival focus will fall on its usefulness for the region’s film and TV industries, prioritizing cinema exhibition over social events.

The main competition, a faithful reflection of the most recent cinema produced both in Spain and Latin America, combines highly experienced filmmakers with up-and-coming talents. In total, it will highlight 23 features, 15 Spanish and eight Latin American.

Sold by Latido Films, Benidorm-set musical comedy “El Cover” is produced by Kiko Martínez at Madrid’s Nadie Es Perfecto (“Perfectos desconocidos”) in collaboration with Amazon Prime Video and Gts Entertainment.

After grinding to a halt because of the pandemic, this feature debut produced by Marta Figueras, starring Carolina Yuste, Vicky Luengo, Ángela Cervantes and Elisabet Casanovas, has restarted shooting. The feature-length fiction debut by Carol Rodríguez Colás will wrap its shoot at the end of June, having resumed after the break forced upon it by the coronavirus crisis. Laureled abroad and lauded at home, a young generation of women Catalan filmmakers started breaking through two years ago, led by Carla Simon’s 2017 Berlin first-feature winner “Summer 93.” Since then a bevy of female directors have emerged, making intimate character-driven dramas rich in observational psychological detail, some drawn from personal experience.

The ranks of women Catalan helmers have swelled substantially with, in various states of production, Clara Roquet’s “Libertad,” Belén Funes’ “A Thief’s Daughter,” Ángeles Hernández ’s “Isaac,” Lucía Alemany’s “Innocence” and Pilar Palomero’s “Girls.”
