Megalopolis Bombs Hard at the Box Office in Its Second Weekend
Image
Sadly, it seems that Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis isn't as fun to watch as it is to say, because the movie's second box office weekend has been nothing short of disastrous. Despite its all-star cast, including Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Jason Schwartzman, and Kathryn Hunter, and boasting the creative talent of writer/director Francis Ford Coppola, the movie has failed to capture the attention of audiences, thanks to its polarizing, and divisive reviews and online reactions. Megalopolis was already in for an uphill box office battle after a lackluster opening, but its sophomore weekend was far worse than anyone was expecting.

Set against a budget of around $110 million (all of which was self-funded by Francis Ford Coppola), Megalopolis made a meager $1 million domestic during its second weekend at the box office. Tally this with the $4 million from its opening weekend,...

'Madame Web' Review - Dakota Johnson Gets Trapped in Her Own 'Morbius'
Image
Credit where credit is due, Madame Web kicks off its runtime by giving the people what they want: a mom researching spiders in the Amazon right before she dies. The first scene of this comic book movie centers on the mother of Cassandra "Cassie" Webb scoping out arachnids in the Amazon with the seemingly trustworthy Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim) by her side. However, as these two characters begin to talk, something is immediately obviously wrong. Words are rigidly spit out of the mouths of the actors on-screen rather than delivered with verve. This pair of souls are speaking as if they've never engaged in a conversation before! Director S.J. Clarkson fails to instill any excitement or tangible humanity in their rapport. The stilted line deliveries here are enough to make one wonder if the projectionist has accidentally played a Neil Breen movie by mistake.

“His artistic vision transcends the technical limitations”: This Neil Breen Movie Looks Like a 1980s Fmv Game Due To Its Hilarious Reliance On Using Shutterstock Images As Backdrops
Image
Neil Breen, the independent American filmmaker and actor, is popular for his peculiar filmmaking. He has written, directed, produced, and starred in six theatrical feature films to date and has garnered a following that likes his low budget but interesting films. Breen usually uses stock footage in his films, and it’s been going on ever since he started producing the films.

The latest movie from Neil Breen, Cade: The Tortured Crossing, was released last year, and it sincerely looks like the 1980s full-motion video (Fmv) game because of how much it relies on Shutterstock images for the backdrops. Fans are both awestruck and genuinely curious to figure out how he is able to do it time and time again.

Neil Breen’s Latest Movie Closely Resembles an Fmv Game

Neil Breen’s Cade: The Tortured Crossing is entirely made using Shutterstock images.

Move Over Tommy Wiseau, Neil Breen Is the Real King of So-Bad-They're-Good Movies
Image
Neil Breen is a lesser-known director who deserves the title of King of so-bad-they're-good movies, with his surreal and self-funded films. Breen's films, such as "Double Down," "I Am Here....Now," and "Fateful Findings," are a stroke of Breen-ius in storytelling, VFX, acting, and editing, making Wiseau's "The Room" seem high-budget in comparison. Breen has gained a cult following, with his films being screened in film courses and colleges, and his unconventional methods of purchasing DVDs and his extensive list of drinking game rules add to his bizarre reputation.

A perfect so-bad-it's-good movie is something of an art form in itself. There are a lot of movies that toe the incredibly thin line, and there are more movies than anyone can possibly watch in a lifetime that are just objectively bad, but sometimes one director comes along and produces misshapen gem after misshapen gem in the unique genre.

Tommy Wiseau...

In Defense of Vanity Projects
Image
Vanity projects can be divisive, with audiences often feeling deceived when the hype doesn't match the execution. Filmmakers who refuse to compromise and have full control over their projects can be seen as interesting and admirable, even if their films are not critically acclaimed. While some vanity projects flop, others, like Sylvester Stallone's Rocky and Billy Bob Thornton's Slingblade, go on to find success and critical acclaim, challenging the notion that all vanity projects are bad.

Cringe is in the eye of the beholder. Indeed, everyone thinks they are star-worthy. Modern social media is founded on the promise anyone can quit their dreary day-job. Isn’t every new director/writer/star guilty of this crime? Rudy Ray Moore’s body of work was only possible through his delusion he could act and knew karate. Today, his films are considered cult classics. Quentin Tarantino cast himself in his own movies,...

Fans of So Bad It's Good Cinema Should Watch Neil Breen's New Movie
Image
Films like Plan 9 and The Room are memorable because of the sincerity and passion behind them, even though their filmmaking knowledge was limited. Neil Breen, an independent filmmaker, fills multiple roles on his sets and uses Craigslist ads to find actors, demonstrating his dedication to his work. Despite incoherent plots and laughable acting, Breen's films have gained a growing fanbase due to the passion and sincerity he brings to his projects, similar to Plan 9 and The Room.

What truly makes a film "so bad it's good" as opposed to just bad? Ever since Mystery Science Theater 3000 became a cult favorite, there's been a growing fascination in certain circles with intended passion projects that manage to gain an audience for unintended reasons. To name just two, 1960s Z-movie director Ed Wood became infamous for Plan 9 From Outer Space, unofficially declared "the best worst movie of all time,...

Film Review: Promise in the Palm (2019) by Hiroshi Yamamori
Image
Putting a camera in the hands of people whose own medium is not film, often leads to interesting final products, a passage down a road less travelled, an opportunity to experience the world through a novice’s eyes. Heck, careers have been launched and even whole cinematic movements have been birthed because of such shoe-strap filmmaking. Creators working within the confines of limited budget and experience assembling a product from scratch with nary a plan in hand tend to serve their audiences a platter of rare delights screaming for appreciation. On the flipside, Hiroshi Yamamori’s debut feature “Promise In The Palm” is a nauseatingly lifeless ordeal, an incomprehensible mess that falls flat on its face with all the grace, composure, and awkward hilarity of a Neil Breen or James Nguyen dud.

“Promise in the Palm” screened at Japan Film Fest Hamburg:

Meandering between the past and present with little regard for narrative cohesion,...

Ellen DeGeneres in American Idol (2002)
Radio Host Opens Up About Ellen DeGeneres’ Staff’s Demands: ‘Don’t Talk to,’ ‘Approach’ or ‘Look at’ Her
Ellen DeGeneres in American Idol (2002)
Ellen Degeneres has been in the media for all the wrong reasons recently.

Following a slew of reports that both DeGeneres and the producers behind her highly-rated talk show have not treated people working on the show in the best of ways, comes a stunning new allegation.

Neil Breen, a radio host, has opened up about his experience with the show and its host.

“When Ellen DeGeneres came to Australia to do her show in 2013, I was the executive producer of the Today show, so we partnered with them,” Breen said on his radio show, 4Bc Breakfast With Neil Breen, earlier this week.

“Originally she was going to cohost the Today show, then she was going to do this, then she was going to do that," he continued.

"The whole thing got watered down to Ellen DeGeneres would do a sit-down interview.”

Breen recalled his team traveling to Melbourne "at...

Newswire: Get Involved, Internet: Fund Fateful Findings director Neil Breen’s next movie
Aficionados of outsider cinema who aren’t already familiar with Las Vegas architect/Diy auteur Neil Breen’s baffling oevure are hereby advised to get on that, now. And you don’t have to take our word for it: The experts at The Flop House recently featured Breen’s film Fateful Findings on an episode of the show, and The A.V. Club’s own Nathan Rabin argued that “The Room is the gold standard for exquisitely, transcendently, historically unself-conscious awfulness, but in recent years its position has been threatened by Neil Breen’s Fateful Findings” in an editorial for Rotten Tomatoes.

If you’re already inducted into the cult of Breen, then we have some great news: He’s currently raising money for his next movie, Twisted, on GoFundMe. Breen provides few details about what to expect in the campaign video, promising simply that Twisted is a “a dark...

It's a magical day! Neil Breen goes on GoFundMe to pitch new film Twisted!
I can't get enough Neil Breen! The man is clearly insane, but keeps getting to make bonkers films, and I couldn't love him more for it. Unlike other bad movie writer-directors (like Tommy Wiseau), Neil Breen doesn't ride on the coattails of one success, and has currently made four films (each one more crazy than the last). And he even has his own tropes, such as hacking secret... Read More...

Tommy Wiseau & Greg Sestero of The Room make new film titled Best F(r)iends
I love bad movies. From the films of Ed Wood, to Birdemic, to Neil Breen's oeuvre, nothing's better than getting a few drinks with friends and riffing on that shit like you're stuck with Crow and Tom Servo on the Satellite of Love. But the thing is, for a bad movie to be worth spending time on, it has to be sincere. No self-aware Sharknado or Machete crap (it's fine if you... Read More...

The American Dream of Middle Aged White Guys Making Bad Movies
Writer/Director/Producer/Editor/Actor/Music Supervisor Neil Breen throws himself against the dry ground of the Nevada desert, articulating the existential climax of his dense, bewildering, remarkable film Double Down by screaming, “I’m an American. I’m an American! I love this country, my country!” Breen plays a mercenary computer hacker who abandoned his work as a military fighter pilot after somebody (?) shoots and kills his fiancée during a naked lounging session in his pool. Breen’s character’s dramatic outpouring of patriotic guilt promises a return to moral fortitude after serving whatever moneyed interests pay him the highest dollar – in this case, an unidentified foreign nation instructing him to singlehandedly shut down the Las Vegas strip for two months. Double Down’s protagonist gives us some insight into the mind of its esoteric creator. The first third of the film features Breen’s character (named Aaron in the trailer and Eric in the film...

Horror Is Child’S Play – Don Mancini’S Curse Of Chucky (World Premiere)

A rarity among genre franchises, the Child’S Play series (begun in 1988) has retained the sure-handed guidance of original screenwriter/creator Don Mancini throughout killer doll Chucky’s decades’-long reign of horror. Mancini, who will be hosting our “scar-studded” world premiere, graduated to the director’s chair with 2004’s Seed Of Chucky, after having co-written or written every entry in the series. His longevity with the project is, of course, matched by the fiendish voiceover work by...
