Debuting feature film directors Karrie Crouse and Will Joines describe their cinematic inspirations for Hold Your Breath as a bit of Kubrick’s The Shining and The Others with the visual panache of Malick’s Days of Heaven. After seeing the Searchlight film, which had its world premiere as one of the Toronto Film Festival’s Special Presentations last month and will begin streaming Friday on Hulu, I thought more of another movie, now 40 years old. Places in the Heart won Sally Field a second Oscar (“You really like me!”) as a widow in Depression-era North Texas trying to survive the elements threatening her farm and her two young children.

I also thought a bit about the great Todd Haynes 1995 drama Safe, with Julianne Moore hiding behind a gas mask to avoid the dangers in our environment. This film falls short of those but is memorable enough to make an impression all its own.

Jessica Alba unleashes her inner Rambo in “Trigger Warning,” wherein her active U.S. military officer gets pulled homeward by tragedy, only to uncover corruption she’ll have to clean up before leaving again. Indonesian director Mouly Surya’s well-crafted first English-language feature is too formulaically contrived to qualify as “elevated genre” or to boast the personal stamp of her prior work. Still, it’s an entertaining, pacey action melodrama that should do well for Netflix, where it launches on June 21.

After two intriguingly conceived but somewhat vague initial features, Surya made an assertive impression with 2018’s “Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts.” That striking “feminist outlaw Western” distinctively juggled elements of revenge thriller, black comedy and character-driven social critique. Her more conventionally commercial American debut is another vengeance tale driven by a strong-willed, capable female protagonist. But this is also the first film on which Surya has not had a hand in the screenplay.

As the tradition calls, Sarah Shahat from IndieWire has published the camera survey regarding the Sundance 2024 Film Festival, focusing on documentaries. As usual, we ingested the data into a chart (cameras and manufacturers) to conclude that Sony’s cameras were the most popular among indie-documentaries filmmakers, even more than Canon’s. However, the most dominant camera is the Canon’s Super 35 beast, which is the acclaimed C300 Mark II.

Olivia often rolls being a cop and a social worker into one job, caring for rape survivors and helping them deal with the violence they've experienced in addition to helping them get justice.

On Law & Order: Svu Season 18 Episode 14 Olivia outdoes herself, refusing to let someone with unlimited financial resources get away with rape, helping the young executive he preyed on to find the courage to testify against him.

None of this is a bad thing. Olivia is the kind of cop we all wish existed and maybe does exist somewhere or other.

John Seale (Mad Max: Fury Road), the late Andrew Lesnie (The Water Diviner) and Benjamin Shirley (The Pack) shared the prize for best cinema feature at the 2015 Nsw/Act annual awards for cinematography.

Jonathan Rossiter was named Australian Cinematographer of the Year at the 2013 Acs National Awards for Cinematography staged in Canberra on Saturday at Old Parliament House. .

Rossiter shot the animated short film Sleight of Hand, directed by Michael Cusack for South Australian-based animation company Anifex. The short has been accepted into competition in the Nashville Film Festival, The Athens International Film + Video Festival and the Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film in Germany. .

Adam Arkapaw won the Golden Tripod for his feature Lore and Roger Deakins took the international award for Skyfall. .
