Warning! Spoilers ahead for Death of the Silver Surfer #1!
Marvel Comics just confirmed that the Silver Surfer is the most powerful alien to ever visit the planet Earth, with the Hulk’s son Skaar being a close second place in the rankings. The Marvel Universe is home to many massively powerful extraterrestrial characters, so it is noteworthy that the publisher would officially declare Skaar and Silver Surfer in the top two spots.
Death of the Silver Surfer #1, written by Grek Pak, with art by Sumit Kumar, takes an interesting tact toward kicking off what it has teased as “the Silver Surfer’s final voyage,” by telling a story that focuses mainly on the perspective of Major Kelly Koh, a member of the "Bureau of Alien Neutralization."

Avatar: The Last Airbender features a delightful and memorable cast of characters, both heroes and villains. On the one hand, Avatar fans love the heroes who embody key traits like courage, forgiveness, generosity and altruism, such as Avatar Aang and his Air Nomad ways or Sokka and his role in invading the Fire Nation to end a dreadful war. But fans can also find plenty of compelling antagonists.
While some Avatar: The Last Airbender villains are just "monsters of the week," others are recurring antagonists with the same personal depth as the heroes they fight. The best Avatar: The Last Airbender villains have deadly powers, cool abilities, memorable dialogue and intriguing personal arcs that make them worthy adversaries of Team Avatar time and again. The mood darkens in Pachinko Season 2 Episode 2 as Sunja’s family suffers another loss and the air raids draw closer.
A dream-like change in tone can’t disguise that this is the second bridge episode of this season, keeping us tethered to the unresolved narrative threads of Season 1 of the Apple TV+ series.
The good news is that we might now be at the point where Season 2 can finally start.
(Apple TV+)
It was hard to tell at first if the episode’s first scene, with its deserted streets and smoky skies, was real.
Our expectations were subverted when the ominous gas mask-wearing figure turned out to be a human friend, not a ghostly specter.
Those expectations were subverted again when we learned that the true messenger of Death arrives on a bicycle.
Neither A Gift, Nor A Power
This episode spends a lot of time in the realm between the dead and the living.

‘Pachinko’ Review: Season 2 Is a Stunning Family Drama That Honors the Joys and Sorrows of Sacrifice
“Pachinko” has always asked a lot of its audience, but Season 2 asks even more. Right from the start, there’s a leap so massive, many shows would’ve never considered requesting it to begin with: I’m writing, of course, of the new opening title sequence. In general, such a switch isn’t unheard of. “The Leftovers” did it — twice (kind of) — and those went over swimmingly. But Damon Lindelof decided to try out a new intro because the first was far from revered (and its arduous droning would’ve set the wrong tone for a playfully bizarre sophomore season). “Pachinko’s” original credits, meanwhile, are beloved! They’re awesome! They’re so gosh darn delightful they overcame the TV Academy’s indefensible neglect in every other category and earned “Pachinko” its only Emmy nomination (for Original Main Title Design)!

The Season 2 premiere of Pachinko, the cinematic Apple TV+ series based on the novel by Min Jin Lee, was absolutely worth the two-year wait.
This episode returns us almost exactly to where we left Sunja (Kim Min-ha) at the end of Season 1 in the Osaka marketplace of 1945.
But WWII isn’t the only conflict Sunja’s family will face during this century or this new season.
(Apple TV+/YouTube screenshot)
The Season 2 premiere features a dual timeline where Sunja deals with poverty in 1945 Osaka while her grandson Solomon Baek (Jin Ha) tries to broker a huge investment deal in 1989 Tokyo.
They are both trying to move ahead and thrive but find that their pasts are never far behind them.
Modes of Survival in Osaka
Sunja’s achievement of selling the best kimchee in the market means little now that her last batch is almost gone, and there is no cabbage available to make more.

When Sunja (Yuh-jung Youn) confronts a new friend (Jun Kunimura) about dark secrets she’s dug up from his past, he reacts with the resignation of someone who’s long since come to terms with them. He does not act out in shock or denial. He offers explanations that are not quite excuses. He accepts that she’s right that his history cannot be changed. But, he asks, “What are we supposed to do then? Spend the rest of our lives chained to it?”
Sunja does not provide an answer, and neither does her series. Down to its very format, which cuts between two timelines, Apple TV+’s Pachinko presents itself as a reflection on the impossibility of finding one. Brandon Lee’s The Crow is considered a cult classic today, but the film was plagued with massive problems starting with the tragic death of the lead star in the middle of filming. Lee’s unfortunate demise was caused by an accidental firing of a gun which had a routine dummy bullet that unfortunately ended up killing him.

This horrific incident ultimately led to a domino effect of troubles which included finding a replacement for the lead actor to complete the film. This disaster on set prompted Hollywood director Chad Stahelski to take major precautions while handling firearms in his blockbuster film John Wick. The former stuntman also exposed the uncomfortable truth behind the use of guns in the industry.

Many documentary filmmakers want their work on the big screen and not small. So, what gives? Why isn’t that happening?
One could argue that we haven’t seen a doc boom in cinemas since 2018 which served up such breakouts as Won’t You Be My Neighbor ($22.8M), Three Identical Strangers ($12.3M) and Rbg ($14M). The pandemic is partially to blame as audiences have savored non-fiction stories on streaming, i.e. the Netflix series, Tiger King.
“It’s not that it doesn’t work theatrically,” explained Lionsgate EVP Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Charlotte Koh who was part of the SXSW session “How to Tell True Stories: Narrative vs. Documentary”.
“It’s becoming more competitive to get people’s attention because there is so much documentary product out there that can be watched through streamers and other ways,” Koh added.

One of the key reasons why Avatar: The Last Airbender has retained relevancy even after two decades since its release is its immaculate, rich world-building, which has been strongly inspired by Southeast Asian and Arctic cultures. However, occasionally, even more than the cultural influence, folklore or mythological foundation acts as the base of its story arcs, which is especially noticeable in the lore of the spirits, mystical entities representing various aspects of nature, emotions, or abstract ideas who play a significant role in the four-element bending intrigue of Avatar. There is a sense of universality that gets conveyed through the world of spirits, creating a unified, coherent structure that grants the potential for more expansive storytelling as well.
The first season of Netflix’s adaptation of Avatar incorporates the influence of spirits in the central plotline in some major ways, although the introduction was a bit abrupt as compared to the original series.

Adaptations and re-imaginings are a tricky thing. They have to capture and recreate the essence of the original while also making changes for (potentially) a new medium, different times, and a new audience. The best ones recognize this and rebuild and remix the original until they end up improving it and making something that feels fresh and brand-new, like HBO's "Watchmen" series or Netflix's animated series "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off." Another opportunity with adaptations is the benefit of hindsight. Even the most meticulous authors and creators cannot possibly think of absolutely everything ahead of time. This offers an opportunity for re-tellings to bring elements that were introduced later in the original story to the forefront.
Netflix's "One Piece" does this. The live-action adaptation of the legendary and long-running manga by Eiichiro Oda introduces the character of Garp much earlier...

Mark Hamill plays one pretty iconic character in Avatar: The Last Airbender, but he voices another lesser-known character that lives in the Spirit World as well. Hamill’s biggest role in the series was notably Fire Lord Ozai, the big bad villain that Aang has to stop from taking over the world. While Ozai is the ultimate antagonist of the show, Mark Hamill’s other character is an odd spirit that perfectly personifies the puzzling nature of the Spirit World.
As the Avatar, Aang has the ability to travel between the physical world and the Spirit World. One of the first spirits that Aang meets is a wise-looking baboon-like spirit that regards him with contempt. Though this baboon spirit shares a voice actor with the series’ villain, that’s where their similarities end. Unlike his brother Iroh’s connection to the Spirit World, Ozai is decidedly unspiritual and cares little...

Lionsgate has merged its Production and Acquisitions groups under a single Content banner, to be headed by Motion Picture Group president Nathan Kahane.
Joe Drake, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair just made the announcement.
“Lionsgate has grown aggressively over the last few years,” said Drake. “We now release approximately 50 new films every year across our wide theatrical release business, from our tentpoles like John Wick: Chapter 4 and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes to our more targeted theatrical business with movies like Sisu and Fall, including a vibrant multiplatform release pipeline that debuts over 30 films annually. In a business where content is more valuable than ever, our strategy is to meet audiences across the globe wherever they consume entertainment with the movies they want to see. Bringing internal development, acquisitions, and co-productions together in one unit enables us to reach the full potential of our philosophy and strategy as a studio.

Singaporean filmmaker Anthony Chen is on a roll – his English-language debut Drift is premiering at Sundance Film Festival, he has Chinese-language drama The Breaking Ice being readied for festival play later this year, and several other directing projects in different languages at various stages of development and pre-production.
Drift, which stars Cynthia Erivo as a Liberian refugee scratching out an existence on a Greek island, is thematically not a million miles away from Chen’s previous two features – Ilo Ilo and Wet Season – in that they’re stories about outsiders or people struggling to find their place in the world and fit in. “I seem to gravitate to telling stories about outsiders and the bonds, or the human connections, that we make between strangers,” says Chen, who has some experience with feeling dislocated, as he grew up in Singapore but spent many years living in the UK.

Dogwoof has picked up Amanda Kim’s documentary on the contemporary artist Nam June Paik for world sales, excluding North America and South Korea.
“Nam June Paik: Moon Is the Oldest TV” is set to world premiere on Jan. 22 at Sundance as part of the U.S. Documentary Competition.
Paik, one of the most famous Asian artists of the 20th century, revolutionized the use of technology as an artistic canvas and invented the video synthesizer. He is credited with coining the term “electronic super highway,” which was the title of one of his most famous works that involved more than 300 TV sets.
The film will trace Paik’s life from childhood as he traveled across the world. He fled to Japan from his native Korea at the outbreak of the Korean War, before moving to Germany and subsequently to New York City where he settled in 1964.
