Fifty minutes in, a Shakespearean twinkle comes over this Ghanian romantic drama; having at first bunkered us into a luxury hotel with squabbling spouses Carl (Arion Amon) and Mimi (Araba Dansowaa) on their first wedding anniversary, three more couples show up to give us multiple variations on marital strife. With all parties sat fuming on the veranda over breakfast, director Shirley Frimpong-Manso is aiming to conduct a summit meeting of the sexes.

African Streamer Showmax Readies Ghanian Drama Series ‘The Billionaire’s Wife’

Exclusive: Showmax’s next original drama will explore marital power structures in Ghana.

The Billionaire’s Wife is a 10-part series set to launch next month (March 2). New episodes will stream every Thursday and represent Showmax’s increasing investment in Ghana.

The show marks the third Showmax Original-branded show from the country, following Shirley Frimpong-Manso drama Eno and docu-reality series My Perfect Funeral, about Ghana’s unique funeral practices.

The Billionaire’s Wife will follow Adepa, a 19-year-old from the slums of Ashaiman who marries an old billionaire with the aim of turning her fortunes around, only to find out that being a billionaire’s wife is the toughest thing she’s ever done.

The 45-minute episodes are set in what Showmax is calling “the glamorous, chaotic, unpredictable and scandalous world of the rich and powerful” in Ghana’s capital Accra.

British Urban Film Festival unveils 2017 line-up

Free In Deed, Chapter And Verse, Blue Hollywood to screen at London festival.

The British Urban Film Festival (Buff, Sept 6-12) has revealed its line-up for 2017.

Opening the festival will be writer-director Jake Mahaffy’s Free In Deed [pictured], about a Us church pastor with healing powers, which premiered at Venice in 2015. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with star David Harewood.

Further feature film screenings include Jamal Joseph’s Chapter And Verse, about a reformed gang leader in Harlem. Director Joseph (a former Black Panther) and star Daniel Beaty will attend a Q&A after the event.

The festival will also feature Francesco Gabriele’s Blue Hollywood, Gillian Scott-Ward’s documentary Back To Natural, and documentary Stay Woke, which profiles the Black Lives Matter movement.

Further screenings include two African features: Colin Perry’s documentary Black Stars Of Highlife and Shirley Frimpong-Manso’s rom-com Potato Potahto.
