If you’ve enjoyed the new remake of RoboCop — or even if you didn’t — you can’t go wrong by checking out newly minted Hollywood leading man Joel Kinnaman in a fantastic film made on his home turf of Sweden. (Were you fooled by Kinnaman’s flawless American accent? He’s not American.) Easy Money, from 2010, had only a small release in North America in 2012, unsurprising given the general lack of interest by U.S. audiences in reading subtitles. Up-and-comer Joel Kinnaman will be donning the visor for a remake of RoboCop next year, but this crime thriller is a low-tech affair made in his native Sweden. It's not short on ambition, though. Writer/director Daniel Espinosa, who has also been singled out by Hollywood bigwigs (and recently helmed Denzel Washington thriller Safe House) wrestles a sprawling novel into shape.

Still, a little patience is required early on as he flits between the daily tribulations of economics student Jw (Kinnaman), Chilean fugitive Jorge (Matias Varela) and Serbian hired muscle Mrado (Dragomir Mrsic). Initially, Jorge appears to be the star of the show, pulling off a daring prison escape while Jw drives his cab and hits the books, dreaming of a better life.

A new trailer for The Weinstein Company's U.S. release of the Swedish thriller Easy Money (Snabba Cash) has landed online. The pic is based on a novel by Swedish author Jens Lapidus and follows a taxi driver (Joel Kinnaman) in Stockholm who gets caught up in a drug-running operation. Directed by Daniel Espinosa (Safe House), the film made a splash in Sweden when it was released in 2010. Kinnaman has since found success in the U.S. on the AMC series The Killing, and he’s set as the lead in the upcoming RoboCop reboot. Martin Scorsese has attached his named to the U.S. release of the film, and this trailer does a good job of selling the action to audiences who may be averse to reading subtitles. There’s a new director in town, garnering the attention of action-film lovers. Less than half a year after the release of Safe House, starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, Director Daniêl Espinosa is back with a visually alluring film called Easy Money.

The new film stars Joel Kinnaman of AMC’s The Killing. There isn’t much dialogue in the new trailer from The Weinstein Company. The trailer focuses on giving you a visual glimpse at a social arena of wealth depravity, which inevitably leads to violence.

About half way through Easy Money (or its untranslated, much punchier Swedish title, Snabba Cash) one of the criminal heavies tells a story about being trapped in an elevator as a small child with a friend where they pried the doors of the elevator open and climbed up to the floor above. The elevator was half-way stuck between floors. The friend realized he forgot his sweater and went back for it, yet when climbing out for the second time, the elevator re-activated and tore the poor lad in half. Normally I am not a fan of such heavy handed symbolism explicitly in the dialogue (shades of Paul Haggis, maybe), but in a film such as this, whose goal is to completely re-purpose the gangster and 'big score' straight up genre picture into a more character based morality tale, a sign post or two cannot hurt.
