This year’s milestone 50th anniversary celebration of Saturday Night Live likely felt like a family reunion for Abby Elliott.
After her four-season run on the NBC sketch comedy show from 2008 to 2012, the Golden Globe nominee recently opened up about her family’s legacy on the show, which includes dad Chris Elliott‘s 1994-’95 run and her uncle Steve Higgins’ was co-head writer from 1995 to ’97, having since served as a producer on SNL.
“I mean, it’s wild,” she said on SiriusXM’s The Julia Cunningham Show, noting that Higgins is “my mom’s sister’s husband. … I mean, something in the Niedert women. I mean, they must just like funny men.”
Abby’s cousin and Steve’s son John Higgins has been on the show since 2021, appearing as part of the comedy trio Please Don’t Destroy. The group frequently pokes fun at their own “nepo baby” status, with Martin Herlihy,...

Saturday Night Live's milestone 50th season ended last week, but the laughs are still coming ... in the form of bloopers
NBC has released a full three minutes of hilarious oopsie-daisies and cast members breaking from the 2024-25 season of SNL. The collection includes moments from live shows, pretaped videos, dress rehearsals, and stage promos.
The video opens with Ego Nwodim as her "Miss Eggy" stand-up comedian persona reacting in shock when the audience shouts "Sh-t!" after she asks, "Cause these men ain't what?" The audio was later cut to avoid an FCC fine, but viewers can still watch Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che cracking up in the background. "Lorne gonna be mad at y'all," Nwodim said in reference to showrunner Lorne Michaels.
More gut-busting SNL Season 50 bloopers include the following:

“SNL” host Scarlett Johansson introduced the “Please Don’t Destroy” trio to first-class flying in last night’s final installment of the season, but things took a sour note when the group realized they’d be landing at the problem-plagued Newark Liberty International Airport — and doing so at the mercy of newbie airport controller Bad Bunny.
The sketch began with Johansson, who hosted the season finale, offers to pay for a first-class trip for the group. Upon boarding the plane the surroundings turned into a rap video set, with Johansson dropping a few bars of her own.
Things took a downward turn after the actress told the guys they would be landing at Newark — the very same airport that has contended with outages and scaled back operations in recent weeks. John Higgins stopped to ask if planes have been crashing at Newark, but Ben Marshall answered, “I think they’re just losing them.

In the final Please Don’t Destroy video for the season, the depressed trio were treated to a little vacation complete with first-class airline tickets courtesy of the finale’s host Scarlett Johansson. Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy were enjoying the perks of first class alongside glam track suit-wearing Johansson — breaking into a song and dance — until she mentioned that they would be landing at Newark, the New Jersey airport whose recent air traffic control woes have been making national headlines.
The guys’ concerns were soon validated as the pilots of their plane couldn’t make contact with Newark and their navigation screens went black. In the shaking first-class cabin, emergency signs came on, with playing hands flashing next to the “no smoking” light.
“Looks like this is it guys. Anything to get off your chest?,” Herlihy yelled.
“This might sound corny but the only thing I regret is...

As Saturday Night Live closes out its 50th season, who better to host the finale than Scarlett Johansson? The two-time Oscar nominee (Marriage Story and JoJo Rabbit) is no stranger to Studio 8H: in addition to hosting six previous times, she's also married to Weekend Update host Colin Jost, making it easier for her to pop up for some surprise cameos here and there.
This year on the film circuit, Johansson is reuniting with Asteroid City director Wes Anderson for The Phoenician Scheme, and she's also starring in the upcoming Jurassic World: Rebirth. Here are the best moments from Johansson's latest SNL hosting gig, from the opening monologue to the best sketches.

HBO's prestige teen drama "Euphoria" has a great deal in common with the Cartoon Network series "SpongeBob SquarePants." Both shows follow a chaotic group of friends who are just trying to keep their heads above (or below) water in a world where nothing quite makes sense. How can all these high school kids afford top designer clothing just to wear casually to school? Which school administrator approved funding for this wildly inappropriate play? Why are there so many fires at the bottom of the ocean? These are just a few of life's unanswerable mysteries.
Fresh off an Oscar win for her performance in "Anora," actress Mikey Madison hosted this week's episode of "Saturday Night Live" and finally brought the worlds of "SpongeBob SquarePants" and "Euphoria" together. A sketch by comedy trio Please Don't Destroy sees Madison show up to the writing room dressed as SpongeBob's cranky neighbor Squidward, complete with...

The Please Don’t Destroy guys set their sights on spoofing The Voice this week by having Shane Gillis play a singer they’d very much like to forget.
Ego Nwodim joined Ben Marshall, John Higgins, and Martin Herlihy as coaches on the fictitious show The Sound. Nwodim played R&b model Coco Summers, Higgins was pop producer Mikey Fiesta Marshall was country swinger Cody Swiggums, and Herlihy played rock icon Eddie Thrashhorn in the bit that employed the requisite revolving chairs and red buttons.
The foursome were immediately bowled over when they hear an angelic version of “Amazing Grace” — only to turn around to find Shane Gillis as a red-haired, scooter-driving hillbilly named Reggie doing the singing.
“Let the bidding war begin,” he declared. “Who wants me?”
The coaches immediately turn back their chairs.

Saturday Night Live‘s 50th anniversary special is casting a long shadow, or maybe just causing a long hangover, at least as depicted in SNL‘s latest promo featuring this week’s guest host Shane Gillis and various still-reeling cast members.
In the promo – watch it above – Gillis is greeted in the studio by cast member Ashley Padilla, who tries to reassure the host that the cast is fully recovered from the big party and ready to play.
Gillis isn’t persuaded – a snoring Michael Longfellow (or is it Marcello Hernandez?) is passed out, Mikey Day is wandering around in Sarah Sherman’s clothes and Please Don’t Destroy’s Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy are arguing over which one of them is Ben.
The ante is upped with the arrival of a remorseful Emil Wakim, who asks if anyone knows a “good tattoo removal guy.” Nothing good ever...

An underrated and forgotten improv comedy film from 2023 is finding new life on streaming as Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain is a hit on Peacock. The film was directed by Saturday Night Live veteran Paul Briganti, produced by Judd Apatow, and starred the SNL sketch-comedic group known as Please Don't Destroy, actors and writers Martin Herily, John Higgins, and Ben Marshall. It currently sits at number nine on Peacock's Top 10 streaming chart.
Their first film, Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain is essentially a feature-length version of the trio's comedic skits. The story follows three childhood friends who try to come back together to rekindle their friendship by trying to find a treasure that they had been hunting for as children.
The official plot reads:

A comedy movie starring and written by multiple Saturday Night Live cast members has suddenly become a streaming success over a year after its release. Since its debut in 1975, NBC's long-running sketch comedy show has served as the springboard for 11 feature-length films based on some of the show's most popular sketches and characters, which have seen mixed success. Their first foray into film came in 1980 with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi's The Blues Brothers, which earned over $115 million at the box office against its $27 million budget.
The success of Wayne's World in 1992, starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, encouraged Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michael to produce more film adaptations featuring popular characters. He brought back 1970s characters for Coneheads in 1993, followed by It's Pat, Stuart Saves His Family, A Night at the Roxbury, Superstar, and The Ladies Man. Quick Links How Did Harley Quinn Set Up Its Killing Joke? Is Harley Quinn Season 5 Making The Killing Joke Better?
The following reveals spoilers for Harley Quinn Season 5, Episode 1, "The Big Apricot," now streaming on Max. It also contains a mention of sexual assault.
At the start of Harley Quinn Season 5, Gotham City is still in tatters, which encourages Harley and Poison Ivy to move to Metropolis. However, a big part of that move revolves around Barbara Gordon (aka Batgirl). She was paralyzed by a bloodthirsty Joker in Season 4, all as the Clown Prince of Crime embraced his dark side again.
It set up a possible new take on Batman: The Killing Joke. Unfortunately, Harley Quinn hasn't gotten the subversion off on the best foot by not really addressing the consequences of what Clown Prince of Crime did.

Heroes are nothing without their villains, and that is especially true under the DC Comics banner. How much the audience loves its protagonist is often decided by how much it hates the antagonist. When it comes to the "heels" of DC, they offer plenty of reasons for readers to hate them.
DC Comics has a tendency to go darker than its superhero universe counterparts, and that darkness offers more opportunity to deliver stories where the villains can be downright despicable. Rather than just plant bombs or indulge in cartoonish plots, DC's villains often commit despicable, even disgusting acts of villainy. Batman's rogues gallery alone is a threat to the entire DC Universe, but the universe at large is filled with grimy evildoers who have committed crimes that would make anyone clutch their pearls.

Wild and crazy guys, the van down by the river, and, of course, more cowbell – just some of the classic sketches shown in the new trailer released today for Peacock‘s four-part docuseries SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night.

James Gunn is currently promoting the DC Universe’s Creature Commandos. However, the Superman writer and director received a bit of a curveball when urged to talk about another superhero title in a new interview. When asked if he had any plans for reimagining Watchmen in the Dcu, Gunn pondered the possibility before responding to the podcast’s host, Josh Horowitz. And then the co-ceo and co-chair of DC Studios answered by saying (per Happy Sad Confused):
Watchmen? I don’t know. You know, I really like… I really respect Alan Moore, I will say. You know, I really respect him. But that said, I did love the TV show.
Moore wrote the original Watchmen stories, which were published in 1986 and 1987. Those iconic issues were drawn by Dave Gibbons and colored by John Higgins, but it didn't sound like Gunn was a fan of the 2009 feature film. The big-screen...

The 55th installment of the DC Universe Original Animated Films and the first of a two-parter, “Watchmen: Chapter 1,” is the direct adaptation of the first six issues of the seminal graphic novel Watchmen, written by Alan Moore, drawn by Dave Gibbons, and colored by John Higgins. The animated film is directed by Brandon Vietti (Batman: Under the Red Hood) and adapted by J. Michael Straczynski (showrunner of Babylon 5).
Watchmen: Chapter 1 (2024) Plot Summary and Movie Synopsis:
Setting
Considering that this is a faithful adaptation of the graphic novel, the setting of the movie remains the same as well. An alternate reality was the United States of America in the 1980s, where the presence of costumed vigilantes or superheroes would begin to produce a point of divergence in 1938. The most significant divergence to have occurred in the Vietnam War, which resulted in a victory for the American forces in 1971 due to the presence of Doctor Manhattan.

The opening credits to last night’s broadcast of “Saturday Night Live” told viewers they’d get to see something they really like: a new short film from Please Don’t Destroy, the small troupe of writers who make frenetic vignettes that often shock as much as they delight. What was delivered, however, was decidedly different.
The three-person “Pdd” team did turn up on screen, but not during the show. Instead, members Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy were part of a commercial from insurance giant Allstate that appeared during an ad break and had the trio holding forth opposite “Mayhem,” the longstanding ad character who has been played by actor Dean Winters for more than a decade. The original Please Don’t Destroy sketch that was supposed to air on “SNL” was cut by producers due to time constraints, according to a person familiar with the matter, and has been made available online.

Although plenty of sketches get cut for time from Saturday Night Live, none were so cutting as Charli Xcx‘s digital short with Please Don’t Destroy.
In ‘Mean Cute‘, the 9x Grammy nominee goes toe-to-toe with the comedy trio, roasting each other in the lobby of 30 Rockefeller after bumping into them during a series of romantic-comedy style encounters.
After running into Marshall in the hallway and connecting over their favorite book, Charli says, “Hey, this might be crazy but would you ever wanna… watch where the f— you’re going? You just charged into me like a rhino, you dead-eyed ginger.”
“I’m sorry, I guess I’m just confused,” quipped Marshall. “It’s November. Weren’t you supposed to get put away with the rest of the Halloween decorations?”

Contrary to the comedy trios name, Please Dont Destroy is delivering some fender-bending chaos in an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the troups SNL 50 partnership with Allstate. Joining forces with Mayhem himself - played by the familiar face of Dean Winters - Martin Herlihy, John Higgins and Ben Marshall - known collectively as Please Dont Destroy - enjoy a joke-filled day in between shots on the bustling streets of New York City. Working together to get the job done, each member of the group takes their turn behind the wheel, quickly proving that perhaps the subway was the better option.

Saturday Night Live has a comedy legacy that spans decades, and the show is making some of its best sketches in the 2020s. Recent seasons of SNL have delivered some of its best sketches, with the series showcasing famous actors, artists, and comedians to keep the show exciting as it matures into its fifth decade of production. Heading into SNL season 50, the show is the longest-running variety and sketch comedy show in US history.
The hosts and musical guests of SNL season 50 help the series celebrate its massive anniversary season, with seasoned hosts like Arianna Grande and John Mulaney returning to the show. One of the most popular installments of the season is the return of Nate Bargatze's "Washington's Dream," which makes a comedy of America's system of weights and measurements through a monologue delivered by Bargatze as George Washington. The series will undoubtedly continue to provide great sketches throughout the decade.

Please Don’t Destroy returned to “Saturday Night Live” this week with a new sketch, their first of the season. The show’s in-house comedy troupe — made up of writers Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy — showed up with Higgns and Herlihy as would-be skydivers, while Marshall served as their instructor… who was feeling deeply bad vibes.
Higgins and Herlihy played friends on a skydiving trip to celebrate a birthday. As they’re preparing to jump from the plane, it becomes apparent that the crew onboard is in no condition to facilitate the jump.
Instructor Marshall tells the pair that he’s feeling a little “weird” about leaping from the plane, which isn’t exactly the kind of pep talk you want to hear before making the same commitment. “I’m usually never nervous. Just woke up feeling off today. Like, luck is just not on my side,” Marshall explained.

The Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, and John Higgins graphic novel Watchmen received a new adaptation from DC animation, with Watchmen: Chapter 1 released in August 2024, and Watchmen: Chapter 2 currently in development. Following the 2009 Zack Snyder film and an HBO series, it has become evident that Watchmen is not nearly as unfilmable or unadaptable as many used to believe. Despite the mostly warm reception for the Snyder film, DC decided to try their hand at another adaptation, but animated this time around.
With an eye for cultural and historical comment, Watchmen became an enormous hit when it was published between 1986 and 1987. Glen Powell has been making all the right movie moves lately, securing big box office wins with his turns in Top Gun: Maverick and Twisters. He's also been partially credited with reviving romcoms in theaters thanks to the success of Anyone But You, and he's continued to hone his chops alongside veteran filmmaker Richard Linklater in movies like Everybody Wants Some!! and Netflixs Hit Man. Add to all this an affinity for the audio drama, and you have a recipe for a true all-rounder.

It was early February 2004 and barely a week into my tenure as editor in chief of Broadcasting & Cable when I first got to see the power of the venerable trade publication in action. Word had surfaced that Comcast was making a hostile $51 billion bid to acquire Disney, and only minutes later, it was B&c’s star reporter John Higgins who had a direct line to Comcast CEO Brian Roberts and his lieutenants as they crisscrossed the country on the corporate jet to rally support from the financial community.
The bid failed in the end, but the terrific cover story in that week’s issue made sure Comcast’s ambitions (fulfilled years later, when it successfully acquired NBCUniversal) were part of the historical record on corporate media ownership. And that exemplified B&c’s vital role as a chronicler and occasional watchdog for what remains the most dynamic and consequential industry of the past century.

The 2024 Emmy category Best Original Music and Lyrics could be completely dominated by “Saturday Night Live,” as the late night staple has submitted eight songs on the ballot for Season 49. Led by music director Eli Brueggemann and music producer Jake Procanik (Jp), this year’s catchy and satirical entries include Maya Rudolph‘s “Mother’s Day Monologue,” Ryan Gosling‘s “Get That Boy Back” featuring Chris Stapleton, and “Dune Popcorn Bucket” from the Ayo Edebiri-hosted episode. See the complete list below.
Note that “Saturday Night Live” has already won this specific race three times before, for the songs “Dick in a Box” (2007), “Justin Timberlake Monologue” (2011) and “Come Back Barack” (2018). “A what?” asks Herlihy.
“Like a twisted…um, why don’t we just go?” Youssef replies.
In a limo later that night, the guys begin to rap. The lyrics are as follows, in bold:

Hitting the airwaves in 1975, Saturday Night Live has become, not only the standard for sketch comedy but an American television institution. With 49 seasons and nearly 1,000 episodes, it is the longest-running TV show in U.S. history. Aside from launching the careers of comedic superstars like Eddie Murphy and Bill Murray, the show has spawned some truly hilarious movies.
Just like how some skits resonate and others flop, not every SNL movie has struck comedy gold. Some characters were simply too big for the small screen and ended up creating some of the funniest films ever made, while others were a quaint one-dimensional joke that was incapable of carrying a feature. Since audiences vote with their laughs and wallets, the best way to rank the SNL movies is by box office receipts.

As many stories have made clear over the past several decades, the Joker is the perfect Lovecraftian figure in DC Comics, an Eldritch, Malevolent force that rivals the unimaginable cosmic horrors of Lovecraft's influential work. The true nature of the Clown Prince of Crime is completely alien to humanity; he is a truly unknowable being, and even attempting to do so will destroy even the most fortified, mentally-strong individuals. Gotham's famous Arkham Asylum has always been linked to Joker's insanity in one way or another, and has provided a focal point for the madness that spreads through his very existence., confirming his role as DC's premiere Eldritch being.

This week's Saturday Night Live brought us Dakota Johnson back in the hosting gig. What was new this time around was that she had to deal with Please Don't Destroy. The guys — Ben Marshall, John Higgins, and Martin Herlihy — want to be friends with Johnson but that doesn't seem likely. In a new short by the comedy team, we get to watch as Johnson goes to a brainstorming session that was quickly derailed when she couldn't stop making fun of the guys. They also tried to make fun of her back, but it really didn't work.

Please Don’t Destroy served up a good ol’ roast battle on this week’s Saturday Night Live, and it turns out that guest host Dakota Johnson can give as good as she gets.
Johnson kicks off the festivities by telling the Pdd boys (Ben Marshall, John Higgins, Martin Herlihy) that she’s seen all of their videos and they’re… “not for me.” She then swats down their sketch ideas before calling them “The Lonelier Island,” referring to that other three-man sketch troupe responsible for some of the biggest viral hits of the last 20 years.
