Sex work is a profession that has long been maligned by the masses. For years, our society has stigmatized and attacked sex workers based on a lack of understanding and perhaps an absence of empathy. If you value the idea of enriching your perspective, you may want to check out the Netflix original horror film Cam. This 2018 feature offers a sympathetic portrayal of sex work while simultaneously speaking to the perils of the industry and the ways in which models find themselves at elevated risk by virtue of simply reporting to work. Not to mention, the picture also touches on themes of identity, the pitfalls of Internet culture, and objectification.
Isa Mazzei who penned the script for Cam is a former webcam model. By virtue of that past experience, she has a unique perspective on the subject matter and plenty to say. Mazzei previously told Vice that she initially wanted...

While we continue waiting to see Charli Xcx in her feature debut Faces of Death, a fresh new take on the cult movie from Cam filmmakers Isa Mazzei and Daniel Goldhaber, Variety reports that the singer will be both producing and starring in the new movie from Japanese master of horror Takashi Miike.
The catch? Well, we don’t know at this time if the project is a horror movie or not. Miike is known for directing films in all kinds of different genres, so it’s certainly not a sure thing that this is a horror project. But as Variety notes in this afternoon’s report, “Though plot details are being kept under wraps, Miike is known for his depictions of extreme violence.”
Charli Xcx will produce the mysterious Takashi Miike film through her banner Studio365. Ross Evans (How to Save a Marriage) is writing the screenplay for the untitled movie.

Get ready for Takashi Miike summer. Charli xcx is set to star in and produce the next film from the prolific Japanese horror director, Variety understands.
The film marks the second project the multi-hyphenate — whose sixth studio album, “Brat,” continues to be a phenomenon — is producing through her new Studio365 banner, joining upcoming A24 movie “The Moment.” Though plot details are being kept under wraps, Miike is known for his depictions of extreme violence, as seen in his 1999 cult classic “Audition” and 2001’s “Ichi the Killer.” Ross Evans, whose script “How to Save a Marriage” is being developed for Sony with Robert Pattinson attached to produce, is penning the screenplay. Yumiko Aoyagi is co-writing.
Since launching “Brat” in June of last year — which earned the pop star three Grammys and was widely regarded as the best album of 2024 — Charli has turned her attention toward acting and producing, lining up an impressive array of projects.

Brat summer is over — Brat winter is coming! It's been a busy old start to the month for pop megastar Charli Xcx, who scooped a mighty four Brit Awards just last weekend before following it up with the announcement of a Glastonbury headline slot just this morning. But while the rest of us would probably be nursing hangovers or taking some time out to chill right about now, that's not the 'Guess' singer's style. Per Deadline's reporting, the budding actor is circling a role in Greta Gerwig's upcoming Netflix Narnia movie.
Who exactly Charli Xcx will hypothetically be playing in Gerwig's fantasy epic adaptation of C.S. Lewis' beloved books isn't 100% confirmed, but while we reckon the Brit star could easily play one of the Good Ones, Deadline's sources say that she could be set to play one of the franchise's Mean Girls instead — namely Jadis, The White Witch.

If Charli Xcx joins the cast of Greta Gerwig’s Narnia movie, the Pevensie family could find a pile of panties in their wardrobe. According to Deadline, Gerwig is eyeing the Grammy-winning artist for her upcoming film based on The Chronicles of Narnia on Netflix. The outlet says Charli Xcx is in the running for a key role, though details remain a mystery.
Whispers about Charli Xcx possibly joining the Narnia cast arrive after hearing she’ll co-headline Saturday’s portion of this year’s Glastonbury Festival alongside Neil Young and Chrome Hearts, Doechii, Deftones, Beth Gibbons, Amyl and the Sniffers, Beabadoobee, Caribou, and many more. While Charli Xcx’s potential Narnia role remains unknown, Deadline suggests she could play Jadis, The White Witch.

Few is the number of singers who've successfully made the leap from the studio to the screen. Frank Sinatra, Cher, Lady Gaga, David Bowie, Elvis, Madonna, *ahem* Justin Timberlake perhaps. But having conquered the music world and given everyone a Brat summer in 2024, pop star Charli Xcx is changing lanes in a big way this year. After booking a whole bunch of buzzy film projects in recent months (more on those below), Variety is reporting that the 'Sympathy is a knife' singer is gearing up to produce and star in The Moment, an A24 movie based on her own original idea.
Set to be the first project released under Charli Xcx's Studio365 production banner, The Moment — whose plot details are being kept schtum for now — will mark the feature directorial debut of photographer turned filmmaker Aidan Zamiri. Charli xcx is teaming up with A24 to produce and star in a new movie called “The Moment,” based on her own original idea.
The “Brat” pop star will produce the film as the first project under her new production company, Studio365. Plot details are kept under wraps.
“The Moment” is the feature directorial debut of Scottish photographer and filmmaker Aidan Zamiri, who wrote the screenplay with Bertie Brandes. Charli’s longtime collaborator A. G. Cook, a producer whose fingerprints are all over “Brat,” will compose the score.
David Hinojosa is also producing “The Moment” via his production banner 2Am. Brandon Creed, Mikey Schwartz-Wright and Zach Nutman will serve as executive producers. A24 is handling the global release of the film.
The announcement comes just hours after Charli led the Brit Awards nominations with five nods, for artist of the year, album of the year, song of the year and dance and pop act.

Benito Skinner recalled Charli Xcx playing her guest role on his upcoming comedy series “Overcompensating,” saying it was “so insane.”
“I was so proud of her,” Skinner told me at GQ’s Men of the Year party on Nov. 14 in Los Angeles. “She came on set and she was absolutely incredible and she blew everyone away. But the fact that she did [‘Overcompensating’] while also touring the world and doing the Sweat tour, it was insane. We’re so lucky to have her in the show.”
Before her appearance on the Amazon show was announced in October, it was revealed that the “Brat” hitmaker would be producing original music for the series, which follows the college life of a closeted former high school football player and homecoming king (Skinner). The cast also includes Wally Baram, Mary Beth Barone, Adam Dimarco and Rish Shah as series regulars, with Connie Britton, Kyle MacLachlan,...

Double-duty on “Saturday Night Live” — as the host and musical guest — is a double-edged sword. The people who are gifted at both, like Donald Glover and Ariana Grande in recent years, usually nail it, appearing in nearly every sketch in the 90-minute show as well as elaborately rendered musical performances. The less-successful tend to do a hesitant, self-referential introductory opening monologue then appear in a small number of skits, and leave the rest to the professionals.
But Charli xcx, who has been an accomplished musician since her early teens but has limited acting experience, nailed her double duty stint on Saturday night, appearing in nearly every sketch, channeling Adele — expertly — Victoria Beckham and her friend and tour-mate Troye Sivan; playing a psycho suburban housewife with Andy Samberg in a Lonely Island digital short, the female sidekick in a parody of a toxic Trump-bro podcast, Shrek’s love interest, and even...

Jeremy O. Harris wants his upcoming feature “Erupcja” to inspire rising filmmakers — and perhaps inspire change among distributors.
The Tony winner told Variety that he hopes his secret film “Erupcja” (Polish for “eruption”) with director Pete Ohs could help resurrect the arthouse “micro-budget” films of decades past.
“I’m hoping that what comes from this is a lot more young filmmakers feeling less pressure to have their first, second, third, fourth, fifth feature be the $10 million, $20 million, $30 juggernaut they want with every person that’s like, the most famous person online,” Harris said. “And maybe, you know, something that’s like, truly honest, fun, and unique to them, that’s smaller, that maybe takes a really brave, exciting distributor to jump onto.”
Of course, this one has a pretty famous person online: Charli Xcx co-stars with Harris. The two also co-produce.

Tyler, The Creator will “See You Again” very soon — but this time, on the big screen.
The Grammy Award-winning artist will make his film debut with the star-studded “Marty Supreme” alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and Timothée Chalamet. Josh Safdie is directing the A24 film from a script he co-wrote with Ronald Bronstein.
“Marty Supreme” is a fictionalized, original feature with official plot details being kept under wraps. However, Variety previously reported that the film may be loosely inspired by the life of Marty Reisman, a ping pong champion who won 22 major ping pong titles from 1946 to 2002, and five bronze medals at the World Table Tennis Championships, across his career. He also made history as the oldest player to win an open national competition in a racket sport while competing in the United States National Hardbat Championship. Reisman died in 2012.
For the film, Chalamet, Safdie, Bronstein, Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, and A24 produce.

Getting into reboot or franchise territory can be difficult. Just ask Mike Flanagan, who recently spoke about the massive pressure hes put himself under to live up to expectations for the next The Exorcist feature. Tackling something that audiences already know is bound to garner some divisive feedback, but thats part of the fun for these professionals. So, when we heard that Daniel Goldhaber would be the helmer behind the remake of the iconic 1978 mondo horror feature, Faces of Death, we were completely ready to hop in and go along for the ride. With the unique vision that he poured into 2018s Cam (which also served as his directorial debut), the filmmaker fully proved himself capable of taking a beloved piece of horror IP and catching it up for a modern audience.

It's hard to make domestic terrorism the subject of a movie intended for a commercial release, but with the state of American culture and politics in such disarray, many disillusioned Americans may be looking for something that taps into the underbelly of society. One of 2023's breakout films, How to Blow Up a Pipeline, was both an immensely gripping thriller and a poignant reflection on the despair of the younger generation. Years before the debut film by Daniel Goldhaber showed extreme environmental activists methodically orchestrating the destruction of an oil pipeline, Bertrand Bonello crafted Nocturama, a chilling thriller and downbeat drama about disaffected young people who detonate bombs throughout Paris. In 2024, Bonello's recent film, The Beast, is topping critics' list of the best films of the year so far, so there's no better time to check out this timely film by one of cinema's most expressive visionaries.

A defining scene in Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s startling movie Evil Does Not Exist shows an adversarial meeting between the residents of an idyllic Japanese village and the representatives of an opportunistic Tokyo-based company. The two groups have gathered to discuss plans for the construction of a luxury camping site. To build goodwill for the project, the representatives, a pair of meek city dwellers, deploy banal commercialese to make their case. They use phrases like “optimize” and “invigorate” to describe what the site might bring to the area. They insist it will be “mutually beneficial.”
But these benefits, if they are even to be taken seriously, are one-sided. Life in this pastoral community depends on finely tuned interactions between humans and the environment. Throughout Evil Does Not Exist, Hamaguchi offers elegant glimpses of daily routines as evidence of this carefully navigated relationship. We see Takumi, a central character played with haunting ambiguity by Hitoshi Omika,...

The super popular original webtoon Death of a Pop Star from creator Violet Karim is getting the adaptation treatment from Wattpad Webtoon Studios.
Death of a Pop Star is a global success, with over 33 million views worldwide. It regales readers with the story of a beloved pop star who suddenly dies and wakes up in Hell. Luckily for her, the Grim Reaper is a massive fan of Sophie's, and he gives her another chance at life on Earth, but that comes with dangerous consequences.
Oscar winner Diablo Cody and Oscar nominee Mason Novick, with Wattpad Webtoon Studios, are adapting the popular webcomic. Cam screenwriter Isa Mazzei will pen the script. As a fan of Cody's work and Mazzei's highly underrated 2018 movie Cam (now on Netflix), I'm very excited to see what these two come up with together.
Cody recently wrote the excellent horror-comedy film, Lisa Frankenstein and the Academy Award-winning film Juno.

Throughout history, horror films have always been social activities -- manageable mini-adventures to be experienced in kinship with a friend, a group, a date, a significant other. There's something perennially appealing about sharing a scary and disturbing movie with someone you love, seeing them react alongside you, feeling bound by a collective sense of dread, encouraging each other to shrug off the fight-or-flight instinct, and ride it out when a scene gets too horrifying. A good horror film can even bring people closer. But horror films are seldomly family events.
To be sure, there is a certain logic to watching specific horror movies with family members. The urgency of a survival adventure like "Train to Busan" or "A Quiet Place," the simmering intensity of a creature thriller like "Jaws" or "Alien," the roller-coaster-ride excitement of a game transformed into an exercise in terror in "The Conjuring," or the unspooling mysteries...

A year ago, Legendary Entertainment’s remake of the infamous 1978 box office hit Faces of Death (get it Here) went into production in Louisiana, with Barbie Ferreira of the HBO series Euphoria, Dacre Montgomery of Netflix’s Stranger Things, Josie Totah of the recent Saved by the Bell revival, Jermaine Fowler of The Blackening, and singer Charli Xcx making up the cast. We haven’t heard a release date for this one yet, but it did just take a major step forward: it has gotten its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. They have announced that the Faces of Death remake has received an R rating for strong bloody violence and gore, sexual content, nudity, language and drug use.
The first Faces of Death was about a pathologist exploring gruesome ways to die via footage purportedly culled from around the world. In reality, most of the death scenes were staged,...

At the end of the 1970s - following the success of horror classics like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Carrie - a new type of production came from the spooky scary genre. Titled Faces of Death, the movie was a morbidly curious look into the moments leading up to, during, and following death. Considered to be one of the most iconic mondo projects of all time, audiences follow along with pathologist Francis B. Gröss (Michael Carr) in the John Alan Schwartz-helmed film as he shows shocking imagery of all things death related including suicide, murders, cannibalistic kills, animal deaths, and more. As one could imagine, the movie received a solid amount of pushback from the censorship powers that be, which only made it all the more interesting to its ever-growing cult fandom. Now, more than four decades later, director Daniel Goldhaber (How to Blow Up a Pipeline) is resurrecting...

This week’s streaming picks will have you seeing double. Doppelgangers are inherently terrifying, or at the very least alarming, for a variety of reasons. In mythology, a doppelganger often acts as a foreboding harbinger of bad news or luck. On a biological level, there’s something unsettling about the discovery of an unrelated person or entity sharing your face.
Then there’s the matter of identity theft, something horror exploits when it comes to doppelgangers. It’s eerie enough to see what appears to be your clone in the wild, but it’s a whole new level of scary when they attempt to take over your entire existence as their own.
This week’s streaming picks highlight the perils of doppelgangers.

How to Blow Up a Pipeline is a radical climate thriller based on a true story and book, aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of climate change. The film draws from the experiences of real climate activists and pipeline experts, adding a real-life dimension to the story. The movie serves as a call to action, encouraging more passionate and radical forms of activism to address climate change. While controversial, it sparks conversation about the issue.
How To Blow Up A Pipeline is a fascinating and distinctive film about a group of activists willing to put themselves on the line to address climate change, and it is based on a true story and book. Directed by Andreas Malm, How To Blow Up A Pipeline has been described as a radical climate thriller that raises awareness of a problem that is too often dismissed. This is a rare week of heavy hitters in the world of streaming, with a few movies that could factor into the fast-approaching Oscar race making their digital debuts. First up is one of Sundance’s big breakouts, a mature love story that managed to gross a decent $10.8 million at the box office.
The contender to watch this week: “Past Lives“
One of summer’s breakout indies, A24’s “Past Lives” could be a legitimate contender in the Best Original Screenplay field. It certainly accelerated the career of first-time filmmaker Celine Song, a noted playwright who wrote for the Prime Video fantasy series “The Wheel of Time.” Song cast the great Greta Lee to portray a New York-based writer who reunites with her long-lost childhood love (Teo Yoo) as an adult. “Past Lives” is sweet and swoony without sinking into clichés that would weigh down a lesser film. It’s...

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Ashkal: The Tunisian Investigation (Youssef Chebbi)
Realized with a formally exacting chilliness, Youssef Chebbi’s slow-burning noir concerns police officers investigating the mysteries behind corpses who have died from immolation. While the nebulous, metaphor-heavy script leaves much to be desired, Chebbi’s Cannes, TIFF, and Nd/Nf selection excels at conjuring an atmosphere of dread and isolation amidst a derelict apartment complex.
Where to Stream: VOD
Carpet Cowboys (Emily MacKenzie and Noah Collier)
The tiny city of Dalton, Georgia, has left a large footprint in the daily lives of millions who most wouldn’t have stopped for a second to consider. Well, it’s probably more appropriate to say that millions have left large footprints in Dalton’s biggest export: this city...

Rarely does a movie actively inspire its audience to take action as intensely as this year's How to Blow Up a Pipeline, a film so realistic and procedural from the perspective of its radical climate activists that it caught the attention of the FBI. Directed by Daniel Goldhaber, who broke into the scene in 2018 with his cerebral Netflix horror Cam, this underrated eco-thriller uses the structural beats of heist and Western films to craft a deliciously entertaining feature that pulls no punches with regard to the dangers of climate change and the moral ambiguities of sabotage for a righteous cause. While protest movies tend to contain their commentary on historical events, using the context of the modern cultural climate to discuss the outdated ways of the old, Goldhaber’s sophomore feature is unique in that it doesn’t just emphasize the present, but the future as well.

Ever since audiences ran screaming from the premiere of the Lumière brothers’ 1895 short Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat, the histories of filmgoing and horror have been inextricably intertwined. Through the decades—and subsequent crazes for color and sound, stereoscopy and anamorphosis—since that train threatened to barrel into the front row, there’s never been a time when audiences didn’t clamor for the palpating fingers of fear.
Into the new millennium, horror films have retained their power to shock and outrage by continuing to plumb our deepest primordial terrors and incarnate our sickest, most socially unpalatable fantasies. They are, in what amounts to a particularly delicious irony, a “safe space” in which we can explore these otherwise unfathomable facets of our true selves, while yet consoling ourselves with the knowledge that “it’s only a movie.”
