Bella Ramsey breaks silence on Neil Druckmann’s departure from The Last of Us
Image
Since The Last of Us season 2 premiered earlier this spring, the fan-favorite HBO drama series has had some incredibly good luck. HBO renewed the show for a third season and season 2 picked up a whopping 16 Emmy Award nominations, and the series seems to be as creatively on fire as ever. However, there's a big change in store ahead behind the scenes for season 3.

Ahead of The Last of Us season 3, co-creator and Naughty Dog video game developer Neil Druckmann announced that he's leaving the series, leaving Crag Mazin in charge as the sole showrunner. It's a big season of change for the series after the departure of Pedro Pascal following Joel's death as well as Kaitlyn Dever's rise as the focus of the upcoming episodes.

In a new interview with Variety, Emmy Award-nominated The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey broke their silence on Druckmann leaving the series for...

In the film, “Harmonia,” Coon plays Ramsey’s mother. “It was really lovely to be nominated with someone else while you’re working together, it felt like a really nice way of it happening,” they said.

On this week’s episode of the Variety Awards Circuit podcast, “The Last of Us” star Bella Ramsey discussed the show’s recent stunning Season 2, and what might be next for their character as Season 3 takes a different turn. Original Abby Actor Reveals Opinion on Kaitlyn Dever’s Performance in The Last of Us Season 2
Image
It was clear from the outset that the success of The Last of Us Season 2 would hinge on the actress cast to play Abby, the antagonist who murders Pedro Pascal's Joel and kicks the story off in a different direction. Eventually Apple Cider Vinegar star Kaitlyn Dever was cast, and fans praised her performance. But what does the original Abby think?

In the original The Last of Us game series, Abby is played by Laura Bailey. She offered her opinion on Dever's acting to Entertainment Weekly at Comic-Con - and she was all positive about it. "She's just phenomenal, every moment that I saw that she was in, I just loved how much she brought to the character and made it her own," she said. "It's kind of like watching your child get up and start walking for the first time. Once you put it out there it's somebody...

Image
Naughty Dog and Dark Horse Books are giving The Last of Us fans a treat with a new hardcover book featuring the scripts for both games. Per Variety, the book, titled The Last of Us: Part I and Part II Scripts, will feature the scripts for the two (so far) games in the series, as well as the 2014 standalone expansion “Left Behind.”

The first game and Left Behind were written by Neil Druckmann (who co-created HBO’s “The Last of Us” adaptation with Craig Mazin), while The Last of Us Part II was written by Druckmann and screenwriter Halley Gross of “Westworld” fame.

Coming to bookstores on December 16 and comic shops on December 17, the 618-page, 8” x 11” hardcover book will feature new art and block printing “that evokes the franchise’s iconic Cordyceps fungus,” as well as a foreword written by Joel voice actor Troy Baker, an art gallery with work...

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in The Last of Us (2023)
Back in April, just days before season 2 of the HBO series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us started airing, HBO officially announced that the show has been renewed for a third season… but during a new interview with Variety, HBO and Max content chairman/CEO Casey Bloys has dropped the disappointing news that we should expect to see The Last of Us season 3 until sometime in 2027. He also added that showrunner Craig Mazin isn’t sure yet if season 3 will be the final season or if a fourth one will be necessary.

When the season 3 order was announced, Mazin, said, “We approached season 2 with the goal of creating something we could be proud of. The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew. Neil Druckmann at an event for 2015 Writers Guild Awards (2015)
In the wake of Neil Druckmann stepping down from “The Last of Us“, HBO exec Casey Bloys has given an update on when fans can expect the third season. Brace yourselves; it’s going to be a very long wait.

“The series is definitely planned for 2027,” Bloys told Variety.

That’s quite a long wait, but that’s not the only update. The exec reveals to the outlet that showrunner and lead writer Craig Mazin is currently determining how long the series will actually run. Bloys states, “Craig is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn’t been decided yet, and I’m following Craig’s lead on that.”

After 'The Last of Us's Controversial Season 2, HBO Reveals How Long We'll Have to Wait for Season 3
Image
The last few weeks have been rocky for The Last of Us fans after learning that both Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross had departed the series, but now the Emmy-winning has just taken a major step forward. HBO has officially confirmed that The Last of Us Season 3 will return in 2027, leaving another full two-year gap between seasons. This news comes on the heels of a controversial Season 2, which saw its Rotten Tomatoes audience score dip by nearly 50%. After earning a “certified fresh” 96% from critics and an 86% from audiences for Season 1, Season 2 earned another “certified fresh” 91%, but its audience score landed at a “rotten” 37%. The Last of Us Season 2 was subject to heavy review bombing as Bella Ramsey stepped into a larger spotlight.

'The Last of Us' May End With Season 3 After All
Image
Following the shocking departure of co-creator Neil Druckmann from HBO’s adaptation of the survival horror video game The Last of Us, the hit series now suddenly faces an even more uncertain future thanks to the latest update from HBO and HBO Max content chairman/CEO, Casey Bloys. And it’s an update that suggests the series could end much sooner than we thought.

Speaking recently with Variety about what’s on the slate for HBO and its streaming platform, Bloys was asked whether The Last of Us Season 3 will make the 2026-2027 season. Confirming that plans are now in place to release the third season in 2027 (meaning audiences will be waiting a while), Bloys revealed that, despite updates to the contrary, it is currently unknown whether there will be a Season 4 or if Season 3 will be the show’s last.

“The series is definitely planned for 2027. Craig is still...

We Finally Know Why Neil Druckmann Quit The Last of Us Season 3
Image
Earlier this month, Neil Druckmann shared a statement revealing that he has decided to step down as the co-creator of HBO’s The Last of Us. Based on Naughty Dog’s video game franchise of the same name, Druckmann worked alongside Craig Mazin for the HBO adaptation, which received acclaim as one of the best video game adaptations ever.

Reflecting on his exit from the show, HBO boss Casey Bloys recently revealed the reason why Druckmann left the show ahead of Season 3. “A lot of people don’t realize that Neil has a full-time job creating video games and running Naughty Dog,” he told Variety.

Known for his work on games like Uncharted and The Last of Us, Neil Druckmann is the Studio Head and Head of Creative at Naughty Dog. In his exit statement, he noted that he will be shifting his focus to writing and directing their next game,...

HBO confirms long wait ahead for The Last of Us season 3, plus major creative changes
Image
It's official: HBO boss Casey Bloys confirmed to Variety that The Last of Us won't return until 2027. Between that and the premiere of Harry Potter, 2027 is shaping up to be a major year for HBO.

Moving forward, The Last of Us will make significant changes onscreen and behind the scenes. Pedro Pascal's role as Joel is mostly wrapped. The story will move forward by showing us the events of season 2 from Abby's point of view, exploring the ongoing tension between her and Ellie (Bella Rasmey). As for the behind-the-scenes changes, expect a huge creative shift as Naughty Dog lead and The Last of Us game co-creator Neil Druckmann exits to refocus on the gaming world, leaving the HBO show in the capable hands of co-showrunner Craig Mazin.

Bloys expressed understanding about Druckmann's prior commitments, noting that he has "a full time job creating video games and running Naughty Dog.

‘The Last of Us’ Season 3 Finally Gets a Release Window Fans Can Look Forward To
Image
Casey Bloys, the head of content for HBO and Max, had a great morning when the combined platform earned a record 142 Emmy nominations, the most ever for the company.

Bloys mentioned that his head of awards, Austin O’Malia, prepared him for different outcomes, saying, “he was feeling good. So if he feels good, I feel good.” This positive feeling was proven right with major nods going to several shows. “The Penguin” led the pack with 24 nominations, followed closely by “The White Lotus” with 23. “The Last of Us” received 16 nominations, “Hacks” got 14, and “The Pitt” earned 13.

One of the big topics around “The Last of Us” is Neil Druckmann stepping away from the show. When asked about this change from HBO’s point of view, Bloys explained that it was great having Neil involved at the start.

HBO boss confirms The Last of Us season 3 release window
Image
The Last of Us season 3 is officially in the works on HBO, but it's going to be a while until the new season is released.

After The Last of Us season 2 finale aired on HBO and HBO Max in May, we were hoping the wait between seasons wouldn't be as long as the wait between the first two seasons. While it might not be a full two years between seasons, it sounds like it's going to be close between season 2 and season 3.

In a new interview with Variety, HBO CEO Casey Bloys revealed that The Last of Us season 3 will premiere in 2027. That's the first time we've seen the HBO boss confirm that there's no chance we'd see the third season next year.

Bloys also mentioned that they haven't decided if The Last of Us season 3 is the final season or not.

Here's what he told Variety:

The Last of Us Makes Major Waves With 16 Emmy Nominations Including Best Actress
Image
The Last of Uslooks to win big at the Emmys with more than a dozen nominations.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, The Last of Us Season 2 has officially snagged a whopping sixteen Emmy Award nominations. Among the most notable individual nominations the series garnered are Best Actress for Bella Ramsey's portrayal of Ellie, as well as Best Actor for Pedro Pascal's portrayal of Joel, the latter of which comes as something of a surprise considering Pascal's scant screen time in the second season.

Numerous The Last of Us stars were nominated in the categories of Best Guest Actor and Best Guest Actress, including Joe Pantoliano and Jeffrey Wright for their portrayals of Eugene and Isaac, and Catherine O'Hara and Kaitlyn Dever for their roles as Gail and Abby. The Last of Us itself earned a nomination for Best Drama, while the series' "making of" documentary was nominated for Best Nonfiction Short.

HBO CEO Confirms The Last of Us' Season 3 Release Date
Image
The Last of Us might be Emmy-nominated, but it'll take a while before the show graces HBO screens again.

Speaking to Variety, HBO CEO Casey Bloys dropped more information about The Last of Us' future and how long it will take to adapt the rest of The Last of Us Part II. "The series is definitely planned for 2027," Bloys said regarding season 3's release date, though he revealed showrunner Craig Mazin "is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn't been decided yet, and I'm following Craig's lead on that."

Unlike the previous seasons, Mazin will be the sole showrunner going into season 3, with Neil Druckmann and writer Halley Gross -- who co-wrote Part II's story with Druckmann -- announcing they will step away from the show earlier this month. According to Bloys, this decision was a result of Druckmann...

The Last Of Us Season 3 Release Window Confirmed
Image
The release window for The Last of Us season 3 has been confirmed. After The Last of Us season 2 ended with massive cliffhangers and the game-changing twist of switching to the perspective of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), fans are eager to know when the hit HBO Max series will continue.

In the aftermath of season 2, the series experienced a considerable change behind-the-scenes as co-showrunner Neil Druckmann made the decision to step away from the adaptation so he could focus on developing projects for Naughty Dog, the same video game development studio that made The Last of Us games.

While speaking with Variety, HBO and Max content chairman/CEO Casey Bloys now confirmed that the plan is for The Last of Us season 3 to be released in 2027. He also discusses how many more seasons there will be as showrunner Craig Mazin adapts the rest of the story from The Last of Us Part II game.

'The Last of Us' Co-Creator's Shock Exit Ahead of Season 3 Addressed by HBO Max Boss

The Last of Us is preparing for its next chapter — but without one of its most important creators. Following news that Naughty Dog studio head and The Last of Us game creator Neil Druckmann is stepping away from the HBO adaptation ahead of Season 3, Casey Bloys, Chairman/CEO of HBO and Max content, has officially weighed in on the decision and what it means for the future of the Emmy-winning series. Speaking with Variety during a celebratory round of interviews following HBO and Max’s record-breaking 142 Emmy nominations, Bloys addressed the elephant in the room: Druckmann’s departure.

"Obviously it was great to have Neil involved in the beginning. The whole reason that I wanted to do Last of Us is after Chernobyl, I said to Craig [Mazin], ‘What do you want to do next?’ And Last of Us was what he wanted to do. That’s what was most important...

Casey Bloys on HBO’s Emmys Haul, ‘The Pitt’ Breakthrough and the Future of ‘White Lotus’ and ‘The Last of Us’
Image
It’s a good day for Casey Bloys, whose programming across HBO and HBO Max tallied up a whopping 142 Emmy nominations across 20 original programs on Tuesday morning, setting a record for the newly re-named platform.

But for the HBO boss, it’s the spread of recognition across both prestige series like “The White Lotus,” “The Last of Us” and “The Penguin” — with “The White Lotus” and “The Penguin” bringing in 24 nods a piece while “The Last of Us” scored 17 nominations — as well as the platform’s other offerings — including “Hacks,” which scored 15 nods for its fourth season, and newcomer “The Pitt,” which joined the pack with 13 nominations — that is the most rewarding.

“It’s always a nice recognition of all the creative people that we get to work with and the teams internally, but what was really nice is the nominations were spread across so many shows and so many genres — the dramas,...

HBO Max Boss Casey Bloys on ‘The Penguin’ Season 2, What’s Next for ‘The Last of Us’ and If He’d Ride a Plane Piloted By Nathan Fielder

It was quite a fine morning for Casey Bloys, the HBO and Max content chairman/CEO who saw his combined platform pull off 142 Emmy nominations — a new best for the company. Bloys said he had been prepped by his head of awards, Austin O’Malia, for several different outcomes, “and he was feeling good. So if he feels good, I feel good.”

And that bore itself out with 24 nominations for “The Penguin” (the most of any limited/anthology series this year), 23 nods for “The White Lotus,” 16 for “The Last of Us,” 14 for “Hacks” and 13 for “The Pitt.”

“When I think about the team at HBO and all the creatives that choose to work with us, I’m thrilled with the recognition that they get,” Bloys said. “But I’m also really happy for the team internally. ‘The Last of Us’ earns 16 Emmy nominations — but has 3 shocking snubs
Image
Emmy voters are still infected with The Last of Us, rewarding the zombified series with 16 nominations on Tuesday, including Best Drama Series. Notably, Season 2 of HBO's adaptation of the popular video-game series didn't get everything for which it submitted, and there are three notable snubs that are causing an uproar on social media: supporting actress Isabela Merced, and the standout episode "Through The Valley" in both directing and writing.

Here are the categories The Last of Us got into — and missed.

Best Drama Series: Nominated

It was never a question whether the fungal apocalypse drama would receive a series bid, since Season 1 scored 24 nominations and won eight trophies in 2023. The Last of Us ended up placing fourth in Gold Derby's Best Drama Series predictions by the time the nominations were announced. It finds itself nominated alongside Andor, The Diplomat, Paradise, The Pitt, Severance, Slow Horses, and The White Lotus.

'The Last of Us' Star Bella Ramsey Lands Historic Emmy Nomination
Image
The Last of Us Season 2 may have proved to be one of the most divisive pieces of television this year, but it seems HBO's bold approach to the video game material won't go unrecognized during the awards season. The leading star of the post-apocalyptic drama has nabbed one of the most coveted nominations at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards.

The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey has been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for portraying Ellie in Season 2. With the historic nomination, Ramsey becomes the first openly non-binary actor to be nominated more than once at the Emmys. It's a well-deserved accomplishment that speaks to how strong their performance was despite a controversial adaptation of the source material. Ramsey had already been a lead on the HBO series since 2023, but Season 2 saw Ellie thrust into the spotlight as the sole protagonist.

One Fan-Made Project of The Last of Us One-Upped the Show in the Best Way Possible

Last Updated on Jul 14, 2025 @ 14:13:53 Pm.

The Last of Us Season 2 perfectly mirrored how the source material was received by fans when it originally released. While the showrunners may have recreated a few scenes from the game, it ultimately fell flat, and the gaming community couldn’t be more upset about how the show fell from grace after a stellar first season.

It didn’t take long for fans to showcase their creativity and even one-up the live-action adaptation in more than one way. Perhaps the showrunners should consider taking notes before working on the third season, focused on Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby Anderson.

New “Chronological” Update Now Available for ‘The Last of Us Part II Remastered’
Image
With The Last of Us Part II Remastered getting a Steam release earlier this year, and on the heels of creator Neil Druckmann exiting the HBO adaptation ahead of the upcoming third season, Naughty Dog has released a new “Chronological” update for the game. As the name entails, the new update now lets players experience the story of The Last of Us Part II chronologically.

Those of you who have played the game know the game’s story is told non-linearly, played out across flashbacks and present-day storylines. According to Naughty Dog, the new update allows players to gain “even deeper insight into Part II‘s narrative,” explaining that the update allows players to see the parallels between Ellie and Abby’s crisscrossing journeys.

The Chronological update also includes a few goodies for those players who jump into this “new, transformative approach” to the story. Alongside new trophies and achievements,...

New Leak Claims Naughty Dog’s Next Game Blends the Last of Us, God of War, and Dark Souls
Image
We’ve gotten very little news of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet since it was revealed at The Game Awards last year. Naughty Dog’s next big release has been long-awaited, but we know so little about it. But if this new leak from 4chan of all places is to be believed, we might know a lot more than we think.

According to an anonymous poster claiming to have worked in Quality Assurance from February to May 2025, the game could be a mix of The Last of Us Part II, Dark Souls, and God of War (2018). It’s a pretty crazy claim for sure, and one that we have to look at with skepticism. Because let’s face it, how often has a 4chan leak turned out to be real?

Details About Naughty Dog’s Next Game Just Got Leaked… On 4Chan

The leak describes Intergalactic as having a “nested sandbox” structure.

I Am Surprisingly Okay With The Last of Us Getting the Skyrim Treatment
Image
Look, I get it. The moment you hear “The Last of Us is getting another edition,” your eyes probably start rolling involuntarily. We’ve all been there, watching Naughty Dog and Sony milk their post-apocalyptic cash cow with the dedication of a dairy farmer.

But here’s the thing about their latest Chronological Mode update: it’s actually brilliant. And I’m not just saying that because it’s free.

This new The Last of Us Part II mode lets you experience Ellie and Abby’s stories in linear chronological order instead of the original back-and-forth narrative structure. Sure, it sounds like another excuse to repackage existing content, but this time they’ve created something genuinely worthwhile. The mode completely reshapes how you understand the story’s emotional beats and character motivations.

For once, I’m not mad about getting the Skyrim treatment. Here’s why you shouldn’t be either.

Image
“The Last of Us” Season 2 soundtrack is coming to vinyl from Mondo.

In addition to 37 score tracks composed by Gustavo Santaolalla and David Fleming, there are four vocal songs, including actor Bella Ramsey‘s rendition of A-ha‘s “Take on Me.”

The 3xLP album is pressed on 140-gram deluxe blend colored vinyl and housed in tri-gatefold jacket with a soft-touch finish designed by Janie Peacock.

“Working on the music for the second season of ‘The Last of Us’ allowed me to delve deeper into this extraordinary story originally created by Neil Druckmann for the game and masterfully reimagined for the HBO series by Neil and Craig Mazin,” said Santaolalla.

“This is a season filled with unexpected narrative turns and introduces some very important new characters. Collaborating once again with David Fleming has been instrumental in achieving a balance between emotionally introspective moments and action-driven sequences. Maya: Bella Ramsey re-teams with Daisy Haggard for Channel 4 thriller
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in The Last of Us (2023)
The hit HBO series The Last of Us, based on the video game of the same name (and its sequel), will continue on into season 3, even with the video game’s co-creator Neil Druckmann stepping back from his creative involvement with the show – but while we wait to see how that turns out, Deadline reports that The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey has signed on to star in the thriller drama Maya as the title character.

Written and created by BAFTA-nominated actress Daisy Haggard, who will also be making her directorial debut on the six-part series, Maya centers on the teenage daughter of Anna (Haggard). The pair leave their lives in London and are forced into a witness protection program with new identities in a small rural Scottish town. The trauma of their past continues to haunt them as the attempt to settle into a new life, with two...

The Pilot TV Podcast: Foundation, Ballard, And Shifting Gears With Guest Jared Harris
Image
This week on the Pilot TV Podcast we're heading into hard sci-fi territory, so buckle up! Yes, the arrival of Foundation Season 3 on Apple TV+ brings with it a serious dose of Jamesplaining as resident speculative fiction fanatic James Dyer not only sits down for a nerdy natter with series star Jared Harris about psychohistory, four-dimensional objects, and cloning [32:00 — 46:46 approx.], but also treats co-hosts Boyd Hilton and Kay Ribeiro to an extensive primer on Apple's ambitious, millennia spanning adaptation of Isaac Asimov's famously headspinning books.

Elsewhere, James, Kay, and Boyd get stuck into a listener question that has them reflecting on shows that didn't get the awards their acclaim warranted (*cough* Better Call Saul *cough*); dig into this week's telly news, including Neil Druckmann's The Last Of Us exit, Invasion's Season 3 renewal on Apple TV+ and The Bear's Season 5 renewal over on Disney+, and Jennifer Aniston's...

Squid Game Season 3: VIP Scenes Were Cut To Keep The Focus On Players – Editor Reveals What Went Missing In Post-Production!
Image
Squid Game Season 3 Cut VIP Screen Time (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Netflix brought back Squid Game with a shorter and tighter season 3, and the return of the VIPs stirred things up again. These masked figures, first seen at the end of season 1, appeared once more in the second half of the new season. Their presence, which is always known for their cold amusement in watching others suffer, always feels jarring, and this time, they had a bit more involvement in the games, but not as much as originally planned.

Editor Removed Several VIP Scenes in Post-Production

According to Screenrant, many of their scenes were cut during editing. Nam Na-young, the editor, explained that when too much time was spent in the VIP rooms, the emotional grip of the games started to slip.

The Last of Us veteran exits HBO series ahead of season 3
Image
The season 2 finale of HBO’s The Last of Us aired and streamed over a month ago. Normally, unless something major happens, it takes a while before any big news about the project's next season comes up. Sadly, that's the case here as a major creative development has just been announced.

As confirmed by Deadline, The Last of Us video game and co-creator Neil Druckmann is stepping away from the HBO program to focus on Naughty Dog games. In a heartfelt quote, he said:

“I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement in The Last of Us on HBO. With work completed on season 2 and before any meaningful work starts on season 3, now is the right time for me to transition my complete focus to Naughty Dog and its future projects, including writing and directing our exciting next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet."

The Bear Season 4 Ending Explained: What Does Carmy’s Exit Mean For The Next Chapter?
Image
What Happened At The End Of The Bear Season 4? (Photo Credit – Hotstar)

In the world of TV dramas that keep audiences on the edge of their couch cushions, The Bear has always been the show that delivers tension with a side of seared scallops. Season 4 dropped all ten episodes in one go on June 25, 2025, and while the food still looks divine and everything was chef’s kiss, the response this time has been lukewarm.

The finale doesn’t go out with fire alarms and slammed doors like Season 3, but it still ends on a note that screams that they are not done yet! With Carmy making a shocking move to step away from the chaos, viewers are now stuck wondering if Season 5 is even on the burner or if this is FX’s final service call.

Despite what critics are saying, The Bear S4 is a return to form. If S3 was navigating depression,...

The Last of Us season 3 gets shocking behind the scenes shakeup
Image
Enough time passed between the first season of The Last of Us on HBO and the second season that the cast had time to age. To be fair, it was mostly featured star Bella Ramsey, and it wasn't even them. It was their character, Ellie.

Ellie went from teenager to early 20s (we think), but her level of maturity was wonderfully portrayed by Ramsey. This was helped by the creators and writers of the show producing material that would make the actors' work easy. But now we know the actors' work might be less easy in season 3.

According to Deadline, series co-creator Neil Druckmann has decided to step away in terms of the artistic side. He won't write or direct any of the episodes for the next season, whenever that arrives. The hope is that it comes in 2027, but what the show will look like at that point is anyone's guess.

The Exit of ‘The Last of Us’ Writers Hints Hollywood Might Be Done Playing Nice with Gamers
Image
It’s been a major year for video games across TV and film, but the latest development out of HBO’s “The Last of Us” suggests an uncertain future for even top games creatives in Hollywood. On Wednesday, the co-writers behind the “The Last of Us: Part II” — a best-selling horror video game that broke records and won 2020’s Game of the Year hundreds of times — announced they would both immediately exit the TV show.

Does the rise and fall of Neil Druckmann at HBO suggest Hollywood is effectively shutting out the creative input of gamers, after looting their greatest hits?

HBO’s take on Druckmann and Halley Gross’ beloved zombie apocalypse game “The Last of Us: Part II” already deviated significantly from its source material. That could explain the show’s dramatic decline in viewership last season, a problem some fans say the writers’ exit will only make worse.

'The Last of Us' Season 3 Shakeups Continue as 'Westworld' Writer Also Departs the HBO Series
Image
It's the day of the long knives at The Last of Us—and this time, it’s not just Neil Druckmann stepping back as Halley Gross, who previously worked on Westworld and co-wrote The Last of Us Part II alongside Druckmann, has now confirmed she won’t be returning to the HBO adaptation as it heads into Season 3. Gross, a key figure in the series from the very beginning, joined Druckmann in announcing her departure.

With great care and consideration, I've decided to take a step back from my day-to-day work on HBO's The Last of Us to make space for what comes next. I'm so appreciative of how special this experience has been. Working alongside Neil, Craig, HBO, and this remarkable cast and crew has been life changing. The stories we told - about love, loss, and what it means to be human in a terrifying world are exactly why I love this franchise.

‘The Last of Us’ shake-up: How cocreator Neil Druckmann’s shock decision to step away could impact the series’ future
Image
With the end of Season 2 of HBO's The Last of Us, we already knew that the third season would see a significant change in front of the camera — with Kaitlyn Dever's Abby taking over the spotlight as the perspective shifts from Bella Ramsey's Ellie.

But an announcement on Wednesday from the video game's creative director and series cocreator Neil Druckmann means a serious shake-up is also going on behind the scenes.

"I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement in The Last of Us on HBO," Druckmann wrote in a statement posted to the Instagram account of game publisher, Naughty Dog.
