Now in its seventh year at the beachy southern edge of Queens, the Rockaway Film Festival has revealed its 2024 lineup, which IndieWire shares exclusively. The festival runs August 17-25, 2024 and features outdoor screenings and conversations at the Rff’s regular yearlong venue, the Arverne Cinema.

This year’s highlights include Jamil McGinnis and Pat Heywood’s looping, multi-screen installation “Waking Up (For the First Time),” a tribute to experimental animator Faith Hubley, with live music performances and DJ sets featuring members of indie bands Animal Collective and Mgmt.

Special events include bio-art and stop-motion animated workshops, children’s cinema, the U.S. premiere of “The Future Perfect” director Nele Wohlatz’s comedy of misunderstandings “Sleep with Your Eyes Open,” the New York premiere of Juan Palacios and Sofie Husum Johannesen’s “As the Tide Comes In,” plus the world premieres of Corey Hughes’ “Your Final Meditation” and Sam Fleischner’s “Jetty.

Amazon Prime's Chemical Hearts, based on the book Our Chemical Hearts, tells a complicated love story between two young high schoolers named Grace (Lili Reinhart) and Henry (Austin Abrams), and it's perfectly set to a beautiful soundtrack. However, there's one track in particular that plays a crucial role in the story. As Henry and Grace drive around in her car throughout the film, "Take Care" by Beach House constantly plays in the background. While Henry associates the track as "their song," it holds a very different meaning for Grace.

Later in the film, Grace reveals to Henry that the song actually reminds her of her previous boyfriend, Dom, who she was in a car crash with. Though Grace survived the car accident with an injury to the knee, Dom died. As a result, Grace struggles with immense depression and blames herself for his death because she says was distracting while he was driving.

Outside Lands will host a two-day virtual festival, aptly named Inside Lands, August 28th and 29th, featuring live and archival performances from artists such as Jack White, Gorillaz and J. Cole.

The free online event came about after the Bay Area fest was forced to cancel this year’s show due to the coronavirus pandemic. Inside Lands will stream exclusively on Twitch, starting August 28th at 4 p.m. Pt/7 p.m. Et.

San Francisco’s Outside Lands announced Wednesday that its 2020 festival has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, organizers also revealed that the festival will return in 2021 with a lineup led by Tame Impala, Lizzo, the Strokes and Tyler, the Creator.

The decision to cancel this year’s Outside Lands was made after discussions between organizers, city officials and state and local health officials. A few years ago, Eric Wareheim took a photo of his then-girlfriend's naked ass and sent it to an ice sculptor. Wareheim likes to throw raucous house parties "based on different parts of anatomy," he says. "I did one called Black Cock [black light and penis-themed]. Another one was Laser Boobs." The sculptor took Wareheim's photo and used it to carve an enormous ice butt, which became the centerpiece of an ass-focused party called Snow Booty.
