Exclusive: Jonah Feingold (Dating & New York), Melissa DuPrey (How to Die Alone), and Paulina Singer (Gotham) have wrapped on You Can Do Better, a romantic comedy marking the feature debut of writer-director Diego Lanao, in which Lanao also stars.

The indie tells the story of two lifelong friends who start a dating show in NYC. The situation becomes complicated when their success accelerates faster than anyone could have imagined. The project explores the tension between love and loneliness, questioning whether one escapes solitude by helping others find meaningful relationships.

Exclusive: Micaela Wittman, the multi-hyphenate behind indies like Clairevoyant and Remy & Arletta, has signed with Brillstein Entertainment Partners for representation.

Wittman was recently announced to be starring alongside Julia Fox and Ashley Moore in Millicent Hailes’s queer romance, Perfect. In the film, Wittman will portray a town local who helps Moore’s character navigate the obstacles that arise during her fractured romantic experience with Fox’s character. Other cast members include Kate Moennig, Creed Bratton, and Lio Mehiel.

In addition to Perfect, Wittman was recently announced to lead Arthur de Larroche’s new ensemble drama We’re Already There opposite Truman Hanks, Jon Bass, Jonah Feingold, Elsie Hewitt, Marc Rebillet, and more. Besides starring, she wrote and produced the pic under her Manic production banner.

“31 Candles,” a romantic comedy from “Exmas” director Jonah Feingold, has been acquired by Level 33 Entertainment.

The film will hit theaters in North America later this year. Level 33 will also represent “31 Candles” for international sales at the upcoming Cannes Film Market.

“31 Candles” follows a 30-year-old New Yorker named Leo Kadner (Feingold), who spontaneously plans his long-overdue Bar Mitzvah after running into his former summer camp crush, Eva Shapiro (newcomer Sarah Coffey). Jackie Sandler, Dale Moss (“The Bachelorette”), comedian Jared Freid, Catherine Cohen (“Only Murders In The Building”), Lori Tan Chinn (“A Man on the Inside”), Caroline Aaron (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Larry Owens (“Abbott Elementary”) round out the cast.

“This is all a Bar Mitzvah boy could ever want — a chance to share a personal, funny, Jewish love story with the world,” Feingold said. “I hope audiences support our completely independent film.”

Feingold also wrote and directed “31 Candles,” which is his fifth feature film.

Exclusive: Micaela Wittman and Arthur De Larroche, the indie filmmaking duo behind Remy & Arletta and Clairevoyant, are reteaming on We’re Already There, a dramedy currently in production in New York City.

De Larroche is directing from his script written with Wittman, who leads the cast. Others appearing include Truman Hanks (A Man Called Otto), Jon Bass (Miracle Workers), Elsie Hewitt (Industry), Kevin William Paul (Broadway’s The Outsiders), Jonah Feingold (At Midnight), Jessica Baglow (Gentleman Jack), electronic musician Marc Rebillet (80 for Brady), Francesca Keller (Anyone Else But Me), and Morgane Bensadoun (Blue Bloods).

A dialogue-driven film in the spirit of My Dinner with Andre, We’re Already There follows a disillusioned young artist (Wittman) as she navigates a single day in New York City, grappling with career setbacks, personal revelations, and industry politics, while juggling self-doubt and ambition in the cutthroat world of entertainment.

Joaquin Acrich and Lily Drew (Mike Birbiglia’s The Old Man & the Pool) are producing alongside Manic, the production company from Wittman & Larroche launched last summer.

The Manic duo comes to the project after collaborating on Remy & Arletta and Clairevoyant, which saw Wittman star with De Larroche directing. An adaptation of the same-name bestseller, which premiered at Outfest, the former is a coming-of-age drama that follows Wittman’s Remy as she attempts to balance her relationship with her alcoholic mother and her longtime best friend, Arletta. The film came on the heels of the duo’s 2021 mockumentary Clairevoyant, which follows a spoiled 21-year-old aspiring guru as she attempts to find the meaning of life while filming her journey with a makeshift camera crew.

As an actress, Wittman was recently announced to be starring opposite Julia Fox and Ashley Moore in the sapphic romance, Perfect. She has also been seen in Netflix’s Shirley Chisholm biopic Shirley, as well as such series as The Dropout, Sharp Objects, Atypical, Teen Wolf, and Modern Family.

De Larroche has also appeared as an actor in both Remy & Arletta and Clairevoyant, among other projects. Prior to Clairevoyant, he helmed the indie features American Bistro and If God Wants.

Focused on young adult, female-led and genre agnostic films, Manic’s initial development slate also included the action horror pic Rager, high-concept YA romance I Suck, and female buddy comedy Night on the Town, as we were first to report.

David Spade and Theo Von are adding a new project to their plates with the buddy comedy Busboys.

The pair wrote the script for the feature that they will star in for director Jonah Feingold. Spade and Von are self-producing and self-financing the movie that also counts Robert Ogden Barnum as a producer.

Busboys is set in an Arizona border town and centers on two pals who mistakenly believe that becoming waiters will solve all of their problems. Production is set to begin in Los Angeles on Jan. 10, 2025. A distributor and release date have not yet been announced.

“We are looking forward to gracing everyone with this comedy that no one asked for,” Spade said in a statement.

Spade launched his career on Saturday Night Live and is known for such movies as Joe Dirt, Grown Ups and The Wrong Missy. His television work includes Rules of Engagement, 8 Simple Rules and Just Shoot Me.

Continuing my new Christmas movie watching for Nerdly, EXmas features on the Amazon-linked app Freevee, and sees Graham (Robbie Amell) surprise his family at Christmas only to discover that his ex-fiancée, Ali (Leighton Meester) had been invited, and is already there celebrating the holiday with his family. And with neither wanting to leave, they will have to put up with each other, all while keeping the family happy.

Christmas is the only time you will catch me watching this kind of rom-com, as I usually find the stories too repetitive and uninteresting. I, and most audiences watching, know exactly what is going to happen in this type of movie, even before I’ve watched it but that really doesn’t make any difference in my enjoyment of it.

Exmas is a delightful holiday rom-com with infectious chemistry between the lead actors, Robbie Amell and Leighton Meester. Their performances make the characters likable despite their flaws. The film delivers unexpectedly funny comedy, thanks to the cast's seamless chemistry and witty dialogue. It will have you chuckling with laughter and adds to the overall charm of the movie. While Exmas follows predictable genre clichés, it still manages to be a warm and charming Christmas flick.

Thanks to Hallmark, Lifetime, and Hollywood in general, the Christmas season is the time for rom-coms. Its nigh impossible to count the romantic comedies that studios dump out every Christmastime like snow in Buffalo. But for every 100th or so sloppy holiday rom-com, there is a film that shines so brightly among the rest, it's instantly considered a Christmas classic. Sophie Wilder is in Mexico City filming Super Society 3 and hopes to get her own spinoff. While shooting, she catches her boyfriend and co-star, Adam, cheating on her with a crew member. Who doesn’t enjoy a good, well-made rom-com? Sadly, that’s not what Jonah Feingold’s At Midnight is. At times it seems like it desperately wishes to be a more modern retelling of Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy while also being a millennial-centred comedy about two unexpected people,...

Largely thanks to streaming, romantic comedies have been making a comeback in the last few years. It's a move that has been welcomed by many, though like any beloved genre, not every offering is of equal quality. Paramount+'s latest original, At Midnight, comes to the table with a syrupy sweet premise and a pair of deeply appealing leads. It holds charms that can win over cynical viewers and even possesses genuine humor. Unfortunately, the overall execution — and more importantly, the central relationship — doesn't quite hold up with closer scrutiny. At Midnight has a certain Old Hollywood flair that gives it a unique edge, but its surface-level approach makes the romance more frothy than impactful.

During the mythical Golden Age of Hollywood, the romantic-comedy genre could be relied upon as a consistently entertaining, star-studded, and profitable performer at the box office, year in and year out. We've fallen quite a long way in the years since despite some recent breakthrough hits like "Crazy Rich Asians" or last year's double-whammy of "The Lost City" and "Ticket to Paradise." Instead of studios going out of their way to court genuine movie stars and put their charisma and charm on display for moviegoing audiences to enjoy vicariously, we've ended up in a place where those once-ubiquitous theatrical features instead struggle to justify their existence ... if they even make it to theaters at all.

Writer-director Jonah Feingold’s “At Midnight” sadly isn’t so much concerned with reinvention as it is with following a formula set by its cinematic forbearers. This spin on “Notting Hill” and “Roman Holiday” (the latter is channeled and referenced throughout) shows a silver screen superstar and a hotel employee falling in love and giving their lives the push they need to achieve their dreams. Although it’s tempting not to mess with perfection, innovation through tweaks to the narrative and characters would’ve changed this Paramount Plus feature from expected to extraordinary.

In the upcoming Paramount+ film "At Midnight," Monica Barbaro ("Top Gun: Maverick") plays Sophie, an actor starring in a superhero film with her boyfriend and fellow actor, Adam. When she finds him cheating on her with a crew member, she has to stay quiet about it because of her career. While in Mexico shooting the end of their movie, she meets ambitious junior hotel manager Alejandro, and finds herself continually meeting up with him at midnight. 

"At Midnight" has a fairytale feel to it, complete with animated opening credits and camera work that pays homage to classic rom-coms of the past. I recently spoke to director Jonah Feingold ("Dating & New York") about his take on the film's style, Martin Scorsese's comments about superhero films, whether there was a plan to have Boneta (who has a musical background) sing, and what films inspired his work on "At Midnight."

The meet-cute in “Top Gun: Maverick” alum Monica Barbaro’s new romantic comedy “At Midnight” isn’t exactly smooth. Diego Boneta’s character Alejandro, a hotel manager, does a sweep of Barbaro’s character Sophie’s room before she arrives and sees that there are no towels. So Alejandro runs off to get some, but accidentally walks in on a fully naked Sophie who’s just taken a shower.

“I kept having to slam this door back to stop him from coming in and I had the biggest bruises on my back and my butt for like the majority of our filming process that they then had to keep covering up when I was wearing bikinis and crop tops and things,” Barbaro told TheWrap. “I didn’t realize it was a stunt, I guess. Filmmaker Jonah Feingold has always been charmed by the idea of happily ever after. But as a hardened New Yorker, born and raised in Manhattan, he’s not naive enough to believe that’s always the way a love story ends.

In his first film, the modern romantic comedy “Dating and New York,” which follows two commitment-phobic millennials, he let audiences fall for the central couple (played by Jaboukie Young-White and Francesca Reale) for 90 minutes before breaking them up in the final seconds of the story. After the movie, which premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in 2021, was released by IFC Films to the world, he recalls getting a few angry emails about the ending.

“I don’t think, in a modern New York dating world, they would end up together,” Feingold, 32, says over coffee at Manhattan’s Marlton Hotel. “I was just trying to be honest.”

While the film hits all the beats of a traditional rom-com, features charismatic stars, and boasts a beautiful and mood-setting musical score, At Midnight brings something fresh to the genre in part by making Mexico itself a star. Showcasing locations from the beach to Mexico City, and with a bi-cultural love story told in Spanish as much as English, At Midnight is likely to make viewers fall for a country even as its protagonists fall for each other.

At Midnight boasts many strengths, from the chemistry-filled performances of Diego Boneta (Alejandro) and Monica Barbaro (Sophie) to the aforementioned musical score by Grant Fonda. Is it almost time for Valentine’s Day mood? Maybe not for everyone but Paramount+ is definitely gearing up for the season of romance with its upcoming rom-com, At Midnight. The fun and charming romantic comedy follows movie star Sophie, and an ambitious hotel manager, Alejandro, who make the “safe choice” of not falling in love. But as you would expect, fate has some other plans. At Midnight stars Father of the Bride (2022) star Diego Boneta and Top Gun: Maverick star Monica Barbaro, and is directed by Jonah Feingold.

Following her turn in the hit Tom Cruise sequel, the first At Midnight trailer has been released for Monica Barbaro's rom-com. Barbaro recently starred in the box office juggernaut Top Gun: Maverick, which opened to wide critical acclaim and proved to have strong legs at the box office. At the time of this writing, Top Gun: Maverick has a 96 percent from critics and a 99 percent from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes and has made 1.48 billion at the box office. A sequel and Barbaro’s return to the franchise have not yet been announced. Barbaro has also appeared in I’m Charlie Walker and The Cathedral and has starred in such series as The Good Cop and Chicago P.D.

Today, Paramount+ has released a new trailer for the romantic comedy "At Midnight." The film stars Monica Barbaro ("Top Gun: Maverick") as a young movie star named Sophie who catches her actor boyfriend Adam (Anders Holm from "Workaholics") cheating while they shoot a film. He's the big name, and she isn't, so keeping this quiet is important for her career. While she nurses a broken heart, she (quite literally) runs into the hotel manager Alejandro (Diego Boneta from "Father of the Bride"), and sparks begin to fly.

In the first trailer, released Monday, we’re introduced to Sophie (Barbaro), a Hollywood star who’s love is on the rocks after catching her boyfriend of five years cheating, and Alejandro (Boneta), a manager at the Mexican hotel she’s staying at while filming a sequel to her hit superhero franchise.

Adam cheating and the shoot brings them all to Alejandro’s hotel in Mexico.

During its presentation at the Television Critics Association’s 2023 winter press tour, Paramount+ debuted new teaser art for the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard,” which premieres on Feb. 16. During the panel about the series however, the team behind the series didn’t seem so sure that this would be the end.

“Who knows?” executive producer Alex Kurtzman said when asked about the ending of the series, with star Patrick Stewart saying that if the show could “maintain the work quality” of the first three seasons, he would be open to reappearing. He also noted that the storylines of the final season intentionally “leave doors open.”

The series stars Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, who he played for seven seasons of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd also star.

The actor starred as Lieutenant Natasha "Phoenix" Trace, a F/A-18F pilot and trainee at the Topgun school under the tutelage of returning ace Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise). Although Barbaro had a solid career in film and television dating back to 2013, Phoenix in Top Gun: Maverick, the highest-grossing movie of 2022, proved to be her breakout role. Paramount Global’s streaming service Paramount+ has released first-look images from upcoming romantic comedy At Midnight, starring Top Gun: Maverick breakout Monica Barbaro, and unveiled that the original film will premiere on the streamer on Friday, Feb. 10 across the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, Latin America and Italy.

Whitney Cummings will soon have ties to legendary comedian Rodney Dangerfield.

The stand-up, writer, producer, director and podcast host has been selected to receive the Rodney Respect Award at the the Los Angeles City College Foundation Gala on Oct. 27. Per Lacc, the honor “is bestowed upon individuals whose creativity has left a unique mark on the history of comedy.” Prior recipients include Jim Carrey, Chelsea Handler, Tim Allen, Brad Garrett, Kelsey Grammer, Jay Leno, Jon Lovitz, Louie Anderson, Bob Saget, Chuck Lorre and others.
