Created and written by Battle, Off Fairfax revolves around Quinn, who is still reeling from his mother’s disappearance 20 years earlier. Quinn leads a misfit group of local hood sleuths on hilarious missions, with each solve kicking off the next episode’s investigation, until all the puzzle pieces ultimately lead them to the truth about Quinn’s mother’s disappearance.

Yassir and Isaiah Lester serve as co-showrunners. Ingrid Escajeda executive produces via her Sugarwitch Productions with Curry and Peyton via Unanimous Media.

Sometimes, you just need to laugh. And in the new comedy The Gutter, from Yassir and Isaiah Lester, you’ll get that chance. The new flick features hilarious performances from Shameik Moore and D’Arcy Carden. It also offers an impressive line up of co-stars including Adam Brody, Rell Battle, Adam Pally, Paul Reiser, and Susan Sarandon. Centering around a miracle bowler, the film offers dramatic actor Shameik a chance to try something fresh. And yes, the man succeeds. The chemistry between Moore and Carden is fantastic.

Recently, I had the chance to chat with Yassir, Isaiah, and the film’s co-lead, D’Arcy Carden. First up, speaking to the filmmakers, they opened up about the process of creating this comedy. It’s a rare thing to see an outrageous and sometimes risky comedy in this day and age. They talked about their approach and giving Moore the chance to be funny.

From the 1990s through the 2000s, it was common to see over-the-top character comedies set in pro sports. Dodgeball, Baseketball, and Semi-Pro helped define over a decade of sports films, each parodying the larger sports complex in turn. The Gutter — directed by Isaiah and Yassir Lester — takes aim at the environment around sports superstardom. At the same time, it features enough absurd and boisterous comedy that it delivers the laughs. While The Gutter runs out of steam occasionally, leaning too heavily into tropes when it does, the overall result is a surprisingly fun comedy.

AlleyCatz, an unassuming bowling alley in a fictional California town, isn’t compelling to passersby or potential customers from the outside. The venue run by Mozell (Sister Sister’s Jackée Harry) has a drab brick exterior, a monument to the sad architecture of suburban shopping centers. It doesn’t offer much when you walk inside either. The lanes need waxing, the bar requires tending and the equipment is in various stages of disrepair. Some people might take one look at AlleyCatz and run, but Walt (Shameik Moore), the silly protagonist of Yassir and Isaiah Lester’s boisterous directorial debut The Gutter, doesn’t have a choice. He needs a job.

The young man, who prefers to live life without a shirt, has been fired from more gigs than he can count. In a particularly amusing early sequence, Walt recounts his shoddy employment history to Mozell, whose face becomes increasingly disturbed with each revelation.

Laughter strikes from all sides in “The Gutter,” the kind of brash and boisterous broad comedy that has largely been missing from multiplexes in recent years. Directors Yassir and Isaiah Lester seem to share a special ability with their main character Walt (Shameik Moore), who has a habit of hitting the central pin in spite of having a different delivery every time he steps up to the line. The same goes for the filmmaking siblings in this hysterical tale of a bowling alley employee who finds he’s better on the lanes than behind the bar.

The Hollywood actors strike has upended plans by the stars of Peacock’s Killing It and Hulu’s animated Solar Opposites series to take part in U.S. TV cast panels at the Just For Laughs comedy festival next week, organizers have confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Killing It panel taking place before a second season return on Aug. 17 was to include series stars Craig Robinson, Rell Battle and Claudia O’Doherty. Abbott Elementary creator Quinta Brunson will receive the best comedy person award at the upcoming Just For Laughs ComedyPro conference, organizers said Thursday.

Brunson, who also stars in her mockumentary spin on an underserved Philadelphia grammar school in the ABC comedy, will be in Montreal for the honor after she was part of the Jfl’s New Faces comic discovery program in 2017.

And Bert Kreischer will pick up the best stand-up comic prize at the Montreal festival after his latest comedy special, Razzle Dazzle, debuted on Netflix. Also a veteran of Jfl, Kreischer starred in and produced The Machine, a movie based on his own experiences with Russian mobsters on a college trip.

The ComedyPro conference, which will hold its awards show on July 28, will also give Ronny Chieng the breakout comedy star of the year trophy, while Feel Good star Mae Martin will receive the rising comedy star of the year prize.

Exclusive: This Joka, a stand-up comedy series exec produced by Will Smith, will not be returning for a second season on Roku.

The streaming service launched the series, which came via its acquisition of short-form service Quibi, in March.

The series features a raft of stand ups including Punkie Johnson and Chris Estrada.

Deadline understands that the decision had nothing to do with the Oscars incident, where Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage, but a somewhat unusual issue with timing.

Roku is believed to never really have had the option to renew the series, which is produced by Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Studios and Topgolf Entertainment Group. The option to renew lapsed before Roku launched the show, and certainly before the streamer had the chance to analyse its viewing data, meaning that it was unlikely to return for a second season on the platform.

Created by Joel Hodgson in 1988, the cult show “MST3K” follows a series of ordinary humans captured by mad scientists who subject them to a series of terrible B-movies. The Craig Robinson-led Peacock comedy series “Killing It” has set its main cast.

Claudia O’Doherty, Rell Battle, Scott MacArthur, Stephanie Nogueras, Wyatt Walter (“Sons of Thunder”), and Jet Miller have all joined Robinson in the series.

Robinson stars in the half-hour series as Craig, a man who will do anything to make his American Dream come true, even compete in a state-sponsored python hunt. The show was ordered to series at the streamer in February.

O’Doherty will play Jillian, a down-on-her luck Uber driver who introduces Craig to the bizarre world of snake hunting. Battle will play Isaiah, Craig’s younger brother, whose version of the American Dream is a lot less legal than Craig’s. MacArthur will play Brock, a rival snake hunter and aspiring social media star. Craig Robinson‘s new Peacock comedy series Killing It has revealed its cast and what characters they’ll portray. They include Stephanie Nogueras, Claudia O’Doherty, Rell Battle, Scott Macarthur, Wyatt Walter, and Jett Miller.

Robinson leads the cast as Craig, a man who will do anything to make his American Dream come true, even compete in a state-sponsored python hunt. Nogueras plays his ex-wife Camille with whom he uneasily co-parents their pre-teen daughter, Vanessa (Jet Miller).

Battle plays Craig’s younger brother Isaiah, whose version of the American Dream is a lot less legal than that of his sibling.

O’Doherty plays Jillian, a down-on-her-luck Uber driver who introduces Craig to the bizarre world of snake hunting.

Macarthur will play Brock, a rival snake hunter and aspiring social media star. Brock’s teenage son and reluctant cameraman Corby will be played by Walter.

Production of the 10 episode series is already underway in New Orleans.

Demi Lovato is returning to scripted television in a food issues comedy that is in the works at NBC.

Lovato, who got her break in the Disney Channel’s Camp Rock franchise and starred in Sonny with a Chance, is to star in and exec produce Hungry, which has received a put pilot commitment from NBC.

The single-camera comedy is being written and exec produced by Will & Grace writer and Hot In Cleveland creator Suzanne Martin. It comes from Hazy Mills and Sb Projects in association with Universal Television.

Hungry follows a group of friends who belong to a food issues group help each other as they look for love, success and the perfect thing in the fridge that’s going to make it all better.

Written by Battle and Parker, Uncivil revolves around a pair of friends – a city prosecutor and public defender – who find that their personal squabbles spill into the courtroom and their professional disputes follow them home.

The Untitled Jermaine Fowler Project, created, written and executive produced by Fowler, is loosely based on his formidable years growing up in a working class town in Prince George’s County, Maryland, with his family.

The project marks Fox’s latest development in the animation space – an area that the network has increasingly been moving into over the past couple of years.

Will Smith is joining the ever-growing sheaf of Hollywood talent in Quibi’s quiver.

The Jeffrey Katzenberg-founded mobile subscription service announced the acquisition of “This Joka,” a 16-episode stand-up comedy series hosted and executive produced by Smith. Quibi is set to debut next Monday, April 6, with 50-odd shows. For now, there’s no premiere date for Smith’s series.

There’s a golf tie-in: “This Joka” is a co-production of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Media and Topgolf Studios, a unit of golf-venue chain Topgolf Entertainment Group. The show is shot on location at Topgolf’s Las Vegas driving-range venue and other spots across Sin City.

In the show, Smith plays host to a diverse guest list of comedians, ranging from up-and-comers to legendary performers. “This Joka” showcases their stand-up sets and will feature one-on-one conversations between Smith and the comedians plus docu-style moments shot backstage and around Vegas.

Exclusive: Quibi has acquired This Joka, a 16-episode stand-up comedy series hosted and executive produced by Will Smith. The series hails from Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Westbrook Studios and Topgolf Entertainment Group.

Westbrook and Topgolf had been developing This Joka since last October as part of their partnership to create original entertainment. It marks the first series pickup for Westbrook since Terence Carter joined the company last fall as Co-President, Head Of Television.

Conan O'Brien is bringing back his pop-up comedy club, Team Coco House, to San Diego for Comic-Con 2019.

Conan O'Brien is making his triumphant return to San Diego Comic-Con. Just as the red-headed late night icon has in years past, Conan will be taping shows at Comic-Con International at San Diego's Spreckels Theatre from Wednesday July 17th through Saturday, July 20th.

But just like last year, however, Conan and his Team Coco have decided that there's no reason for just him to have all the fun. For the third year in a row, Team Coco and TBS have announced that Team Coco House, a pop-up comedy club will be returning to San Diego for Sdcc 2019. Team Coco House will feature a daily lineup of comics handpicked by O'Brien as well as podcasts, panels, trivia, giveaways, and some other surprise appearances.

Jermaine Fowler has taken on one of the lead roles in the anticipated comedy sequel Coming 2 America, which will reunite Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall on the big screen. No details about Fowler's character have been officially divulged at this time.

Jermaine Fowler is a comedian perhaps best known for his starring role in the sitcom Superior Donuts. Fowler will begin shooting Coming 2 America soon, with the movie already locked in for December 18 of this year, arriving as one of Christmas' biggest blockbusters and serving as a return to form for Eddie Murphy, who hasn't been seen on the big screen since 2016's Mr. Church.

In one of the biggest comedy deals of the current development season, the former “Superior Donuts” star–along with Quinta Brunson and Larry Wilmore–has landed a pilot production commitment for a multi-camera comedy at the broadcaster.

Titled “Quinta & Jermaine,” the series will star Fowler and Brunson as childhood best friends who find themselves expecting a child while navigating adulthood. Fowler, Brunson, and Wilmore are all writers and executive producers on the project, with Michael Rotenberg and Josh Lieberman of 3 Arts Entertainment also executive producing.
