Exclusive: The London-based sales agent has struck a Us and Canadian sale on the BAFTA-nominated war story ahead of next month’s North American premiere in Toronto.

Metro International head of sales Natalie Brenner has licensed Us and Canadian rights to Toronto-based Search Engine in a deal with president John Bain that will see the Canadian distributor make its first foray into the Us market, where it will release in conjunction with Honora Productions.

The film, until recently known as Kajaki. The True Story, will premiere in Toronto’s City To City section profiling cinema from London-based filmmakers.

Paul Katis directed Kilo Two Bravo, about a group of mostly British soldiers who become stranded in a minefield during a 2006 rescue mission in Afghanistan.

Shine International has sold the two-part miniseries Inxs: Never Tear Us Apart to premium cable channel Showtime in the U.S. The two-hour project from Shine Australia tells the uncensored story of the multiplatinum band’s rise to international stardom through the death of lead singer Michael Hutchence in 1997. Band members and insiders collaborated with the producers on the show, which aired Down Under in February and is the country’s top-rated Australian drama of 2014.

King's Speech producer takes on Afghan war drama
The King's Speech producer Gareth Ellis-Unwin has signed on for an independent war drama set in Afghanistan.

The filmmaker - who accepted the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2011 - is serving as an executive producer on Kajaki (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Director Paul Katis and writer Tom Williams's film has been part-crowdfunded through Indiegogo.

Kajaki will recount the true story of a three-man unit on patrol in Afghanistan in 2006 who accidentally detonate a bomb.

They find themselves trapped in a minefield left behind after the Russian invasion in the 1980s, with one of their members critically injured.

Kajaki is planned to premiere in London through a series of special Vue Cinema screenings.

Proceeds will go to armed forces charities including Royal British Legion, Help for Heroes and Walking Wounded.

Landmine drama Kajaki begins shoot
The King’s Speech producer Gareth Ellis-Unwin on board British soldier drama, which will be released as troops return from Afghanistan later this year.

Shooting began last week on Kajaki, a battlefield drama based on the true story of British soldiers who became trapped in a minefield in Afghanistan. The film will shoot on location in Jordan for six weeks.

Paul Katis will make his feature directorial debut with the film, which has been written by Tom Williams (Chalet Girl), and Gareth Ellis-Unwin, producer of The King’s Speech, is executive producer for Bedlam Productions.

Based on first-hand accounts, the film depicts an incident involving a group of soldiers - mostly from the British Army’s 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment [3 Para] - who were trapped in a minefield while stationed at the Kajaki Dam in Afghanistan in 2006.
