“Jury Duty” will be back for Season 2 sooner than we think.

The Amazon Freevee comedy, which became a surprise hit for the platform and migrated over to Prime Video after the sibling streamer’s shuttering, already produced its next installment, according to media reports.

Amazon representatives declined to comment for the story.

The new season is believed to be set at a corporate retreat instead of a courtroom, according to a report from Variety. Filming took place in Los Angeles and Deadline reported the story will center around a David vs. Goliath theme.

“Jury Duty” was created by Lee Eisenberg, and Gene Stupnitsky. Season 1 followed breakout star Ronald Gladden in a documentary-style journey following his time as a juror, until it is revealed that the proceedings were fake from the start.

“Jury Duty” has been summoned once again.

The comedy series, which debuted on Amazon’s now-defunct streamer Freevee as a surprise hit in 2023, will run for a second season on Amazon Prime Video, Variety has learned from sources. Amazon did not comment on the renewal.

Additionally, a source tells Variety that Season 2 will be set at a corporate retreat rather than a courtroom, and that it was shot in the Los Angeles suburb of Agoura Hills. Amazon did not comment on this information.

Season 1 of the documentary-style project followed Ronald Gladden’s journey as a juror during a trial that gets increasingly more dysfunctional until it’s finally revealed that the entire case is fake and everyone besides him is a paid actor.

One of the comedy breakouts of 2023 was Jury Duty, a documentary-style comedy for Amazon Freevee that featured James Marsden and other actors surrounding an unsuspecting juror at a trial. Past Lives was named best feature at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards, which were handed out Sunday afternoon in Santa Monica.

In addition, Celine Song was named best director for her work on the film.

Elsewhere, Da’Vine Joy Randolph won the Spirit Award for best supporting performance, for her role in The Holdovers, repeating her win from Saturday night’s SAG Awards and other shows this awards season. Her co-star, Dominic Sessa, won the Spirit Award for best breakthrough performance.

American Fiction also collected two trophies: Cord Jefferson won the award for best screenplay, while Jeffrey Wright won for best lead performance.

May December won the award for best first screenplay for Samy Burch (story by Burch and Alex Mechanik). Four Daughters was named best documentary.

Nominees for the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards — the premiere awards event for the independent film and television community — were announced on Tuesday morning by actor/director/writer Natalie Morales and actor/producer/writer Joel Kim Booster, and HBO’s The Last of Us and Prime Video’s I’m a Virgo the TV pack with four nods each.

American Fiction, May December and Past Lives lead the nominations for the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards, which were were announced Tuesday morning.

Each film garnered five noms, including best feature. Also nominated in that category are All of Us Strangers, Passages and We Grown Now.

The Robert Altman Award, which is given to one film’s director, casting director and ensemble cast, will be presented to Showing Up, directed by Kelly Reichardt. The casting director is Gayle Keller, and the ensemble cast includes André Benjamin, Hong Chau, Judd Hirsch, Heather Lawless, James Le Gros, John Magaro, Matt Malloy, Amanda Plummer, Maryann Plunkett, Denzel Rodriguez and Michelle Williams.

Jury Duty has become a big hit for Amazon Freevee. The executive producers of the series, David Bernad and Todd Schulman, think the concept behind the series is ‘infinitely repeatable.’ So there is a good chance the series may be renewed for a second season.

The creative minds behind The Office set their new docu-style comedy in the courtroom. Amazon Freevee’s Jury Duty, which just released a trailer, focuses on 12 jurors…but only one doesn’t realize he’s not sitting on a real jury.

“Jury Duty originated with a question: Was it possible to make a sitcom like The Office about a trial, populate it with brilliant comedic performers, and put a real person at the center of the show who doesn’t realize he’s surrounded by actors?” said executive producer Todd Schulman (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm). “We honestly had no idea, but when we pitched it to Freevee we pretended like it was a sure thing.
