‘Somnium’ Turns Sleep Into a Waking Terror
Image
Racheal Cain’s debut feature Somnium will be released on demand in the UK and Ireland from 8 September, following a limited US theatrical rollout this summer. The sci-fi horror film, which centres on a mysterious sleep clinic that turns dreams into terrifying reality, stars Chloë Levine, Will Peltz and Stranger Things breakout Grace Van Dien.

The story follows Gemma, a small-town aspiring actress who moves to Los Angeles in the aftermath of a break-up. Trying to navigate the brutal landscape of Hollywood auditions, she accepts a night shift job at Somnium, an experimental sleep research centre promising transformative rest through untested technology. But what begins as a temporary solution quickly becomes something far more dangerous. Gemma begins to lose her grip on reality as hallucinations, paranoia and dreamlike horrors take hold, suggesting that the clinic’s procedures may be warping more than just her sleep patterns.

New Trailer for 100% Rotten Tomatoes Horror Movie Channels a David Cronenberg Classic [Exclusive]

A new trailer has arrived for Somnium, the acclaimed horror-sci-fi debut from writer-director Racheal Cain — and it’s just as unsettling, stylish, and sharp as the buzz from this year’s genre festivals promised. To make ends meet, she accepts a night-shift job at a sleep clinic with a sinister twist: Somnium doesn’t just study dreams — it manufactures them. HorRHIFFic 2025: ‘Somnium’ Review
Image
Stars: Chloë Levine, Will Peltz, Gillian White, Peter Vack, Johnathon Schaech, Grace Van Dien | Written and Directed by Racheal Cain

Somnium is the first feature from writer/director Racheal Cain after a trio of shorts, Everything Beautiful, The Clancy Family Funeral Home and Roaddog. It’s a film about dreams, both literal and figurative, following Gemma as, in the wake of a painful breakup, she decides to relocate to Los Angeles and pursue her dreams of Hollywood fame and fortune.

But, as we see in the montage that follows her arrival, that’s a dream that takes more than wishing on a star to make happen. Needing to pay the bills, she takes a job working nights at a sleep research company called Somnium as a sleep sitter, watching over the sleeping patients. It’s not glamorous, and the pay isn’t much, but it’s a job, and it...

Rory Culkin and Paris Jackson to lead director Adam Sigal’s 1990s softcore porn comedy Skinemax
Image
Lower the lights, close the curtains, and leave one headphone halfway off your ear to detect outside noise because Rory Culkin and Paris Jackson will lead the 1990s-set softcore porn comedy Skinemax. The project comes from Adam Sigal, who directs Skinemax from a script he wrote. Production for Skinemax recently wrapped in Budapest, with the film sounding like it could deliver some blush-worthy laughs.

Skinemax focuses on the softcore porn industry in 1990. You know, the decade when adult film icons like Silvia Saint, Asia Carerra, Peter North, and Jack Napier were the kings and queens of fictitious bedroom gymnastics, and adolescents prayed for scrambled channels to display even a single private part long enough to feel as if they’d won the porn lottery. Yeah, that magical time. The film follows Morgan Sands (Culkin), a failing indie film director, and his unlikely friendship with Jessie Hudson (Jackson), a popular adult film star.

Nelson Peltz Nominates Himself and Jay Rasulo to Disney’s Board as Proxy Fight Officially Kicks Off
Image
Disney is officially facing its second proxy fight in as many years, with Nelson Peltz’s Trian Partners officially nominating the activist investor and former Disney CFO Jay Rasulo to the entertainment company’s board of directors.

Trian formally nominated Peltz and Rasulo on Thursday morning, after previously announcing their plans in December. Trian’s preliminary proxy filing did not name which current Disney directors it intends to replace, with those names to come at a later date.

Trian also revealed its rationale for pursuing another proxy fight, once again highlighting Disney’s lagging stock performance, as well as a relative lack of ownership of Disney shares from the company’s board.

While those were both mentioned last year, the company also said that it intends to push Disney to “target and achieve Netflix-like margins of 15-20% by Fy 2027” in its streaming business; “finally complete a successful CEO succession,...

Who Is Nelson Peltz and Why Won’t He Leave Disney Alone?
Image
Ladies and gentlemen, billionaire and corporate agitator Nelson Peltz is back — and he’s again backed by former Marvel executive Ike Perlmutter. This time, Perlmutter is letting his own (substantial) shares of Disney do the talking — via Peltz’s Trian Fund Management.

Trian now has sole voting power over 33 million Disney shares, most of which come from Perlmutter. He became one of Disney’s largest independent shareholders when he sold Marvel to Disney in 2009 (he got a bunch of cash and stock and a job — but no board seat). Perlmutter believes the shares should be worth more than they are.

These days, Disney trades for about $80 per share; it neared $200 in March 2021. To address this inequity, Peltz and Perlmutter want Disney to cut spending, reduce executives’ salaries, and get some Trian folks on the Disney board. The two are pushing for “multiple” Disney board seats, the Wall Street Journal reported; one would be for Peltz.

Mickey Rourke, Casper Van Dien, and Mena Suvari in Hunt Club (2022)
Hunt Club

When a young woman (Mena Suvari) breaks up with her girlfriend (Maya Stojan) and is subsequently persuaded to go on a hunting trip with a father and son (Caspar Van Dien and Will Peltz) who witness the incident, nothing is as it seems. They haven’t told her that on this trip, she will be the prey, but there are a few things which she hasn’t told them either. When I met Hunt Club director Elizabeth Blake-Thomas, I explained that I’ve seen a lot of films about hunting humans over the years but that I couldn’t recall another one with a female director.

“It was important that we had a female director because of the subject. There was no choice, it could not be a male director. We had everything from a very strong female led team actually: the makeup, the designers, the wardrobe, the production.

This Creepy Horror Movie Is More Than a Supernatural Found-Footage Gimmick
Image
Remember Unfriended? The creepy and provocative horror film that brought the genre to the modern digital age by showcasing the entire feature through Blaire's (Shelley Hennig) laptop screen. The gimmick is ultimately what sold this found footage movie; however, beyond the heavy use of social media and supernatural high jinks is a film with a deeper meaning that makes the 2014 feature a valuable presence in the world of horror. To recall, Unfriended catches up to Blaire, Mitch (Moses Storm), Jess (Renee Olstead), Adam (Will Peltz), Ken (Jacob Wysocki), and Val (Courtney Halverson) on an online group Skype session. Suddenly, they're joined by a user known only as Billie227; however, the account is under the name of Laura Barns (Heather Sossaman), their classmate who committed suicide, and the night this all takes place is the one-year anniversary of this tragic incident. The Resurrection of Charles Manson review – evil-hippy horror looks for chills in desert
Charles Manson
This film isn’t really about Charles Manson, and it’s a total mess, but there’s fun to be found in its ragged, plothole-filled thrills

This shambolic but not entirely uninteresting low-budget horror flick clearly aims to cash in on the continuing public fascination with 1960s cult leader Charles Manson, who died in prison in 2017. However, it barely engages with Manson or the stories around his so-called “family” of followers, or what is significant, in cultural terms, about the murders they committed in Hollywood in 1969. Manson’s name here is little more than a boogieman – like Satan, or Hitler, or Freddie – to establish a creepy tone for a story about evil hippies with malign intent. This is not to suggest that the film would have been better if it had been more Manson-y, just that it is a missed opportunity to add more texture.

The first act introduces us to a good-looking,...

‘The Resurrection of Charles Manson’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Katherine Hughes, Josh Plasse, Frank Grillo, Jaime King, Sarah Dumont, Sydelle Noel, Will Peltz | Written by Brev Moss, Josh Plasse | Directed by Remy Grillo

If we’re being honest, there’s probably been enough TV shows, films and documentaries about Charles Manson to last my lifetime and many others. Even Quentin Tarantino got in on the act a few years ago with Once Upon Time In Hollywood but that doesn’t seem to be stopping directors continuing to make them. They are obviously still popular and people think they can add something new and interesting to everything else that has been told. The Resurrection of Charles Manson is the latest movie to try and do that.

This one is a little different because it doesn’t really feature Charles Manson himself, so that title is a little misleading. In it, a couple are putting in an audition tape for a film about Charles Manson.

Last July, we heard that production had wrapped on Hunt Club, a thriller starring Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers), Mena Suvari (American Beauty), Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), Maya Stojan (Newness), Will Peltz (13 Minutes), and Jessica Belkin (The Orville). Directed by Elizabeth Blake-Thomas (The League of Legend Keepers: Shadows) from a script by David Lipper and John F. Unfriended Ending, Explained
Image
This article contains references to bullying, suicide, and sexual assault. Readers discretion is advised.

After several teenagers on Skype are tormented by a supernatural entity, the ending to the 2015 horror movie, Unfriended, is just as dark as the rest of the story. Blaire Lilly (Shelley Hennig), her boyfriend Mitch Roussel (Moses Storm), and their friends, Val Rommel (Courtney Halverston), Ken Smith (Jacob Wysocki), Adam Sewell (Will Peltz), and Jess Felton (Renee Olstead) are confused as to why someone named billie227 is part of their group chat - which sets up the paranormal twist. While there are many films that use the screenlife format, Unfriended still stood out thanks to the cast's performances and writing.

Similar to the terrifying movie Host, Unfriended has an eerie tone, and the bleak and brutal conclusion wraps up every character's story and offers proper explanations for every plot point. The characters are unlikable on purpose,...

The Best Screenlife Horror Movies
Image
Thanks to the runaway success of The Blair Witch Project in 1999, found footage movies quickly became the hottest thing in horror. By relying on camcorders, surveillance footage, and other unlikely camera sources, filmmakers could not only add some verisimilitude to their stories but could also do it on the cheap. But just as quickly, found footage became the most hated subgenre, as fans and critics decried its rigid constraints, laughing at the ridiculous ways characters justified recording when they should be running.

Just as the subgenre died, a new and more relevant approach emerged: desktop movies taking place entirely on computer screens, using webcams, streaming video, and recordings to tell their stories. Not only do desktop movies offer more variety in visual style, but they also better reflect our actual lives, as we spend a lot of time staring at computer and phone screens.

Exciting as the subgenre certainly is,...

Exploited gets off to a start that certainly lives up to its title as webcam performer Caleb is beaten to death in mid-performance.

Move forward a few months to the start of a new school year and Brian (Jordan Ver Hoeve; 666: Teen Warlock) is moving into his dorm room and starting college life. After walking in on his roommate Jeremy and his girlfriend Lexi he starts to get settled in. He doesn’t notice a flash drive identical to the one the school gave him sitting on the desk. He’s in for a nasty shock as it contains videos of the online sexual activity of the room’s previous occupant. And, in the last video, being murdered.

Why Unfriended Is More Than a Supernatural Found Footage Gimmick
Image
Remember Unfriended? The creepy and provocative horror film that brought the genre to the modern digital age by showcasing the entire feature through Blaire's (Shelley Hennig) laptop. Blaire and her friends are forced to confront their darkest...
