Brendan Fraser dramedy Rental Family lands awards season release from Searchlight
Brendan Fraser
It’s been over two years since Brendan Fraser won the Academy Award for Best Actor for The Whale. And while he has had supporting roles in films like Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and Max Barbakow’s Brothers, he’s once again taking the marquee, as dramedy Family Rental has been announced for a November release via Searchlight Pictures.

In Family Rental – which was announced in November 2023 – Brendan Fraser plays a man hired by a rental family company, an actual service where people are given jobs as stand-ins for friends, family members, etc. – in Japan. It’s through this and his experiences along the way in which he learns far more about himself than he was expecting. With a November 21st release, Searchlight looks to be jockeying for another awards contender; with the themes at play, it also could make for a solid pre-Thanksgiving outing at the theater.

50 Most Underrated Movies of the Last Decade
Image
Sure, big-budget blockbusters do steal the spotlight, but nothing can beat the real cinematic gold that often slips quietly under the underrated movies list. Over the past decade, while franchises soared, a wave of underrated gems emerged quietly and made their mark, without fanfare, red-carpet buzz, or viral memes. Yep, we’re talking about the films that didn’t break box office records but definitely broke our hearts, bent genres, and left cinephiles like us whispering, ‘How did more people not see this?’

From sleeper thrillers to indie darlings, deadpan comedies to moody dramas, there’s a long list of some of the best storytelling that absolutely went unnoticed. Perhaps they had poor marketing, or maybe they released their product next to a Marvel monster. Or maybe they were just too weird, wild, or wonderful for the mainstream crowd. But whatever the reason may be, they undoubtedly deserved better, and...

Andrew Barth Feldman and Jennifer Lawrence in No Hard Feelings (2023)
10 Movies To Watch If You Like ‘No Hard Feelings’
Andrew Barth Feldman and Jennifer Lawrence in No Hard Feelings (2023)
“No Hard Feelings” is making quite a buzz worldwide. It is an R-rated summer comedy, giving the genre one of its funniest films in years thanks to its outrageous, unapologetic tone. Jennifer Lawrence drives this movie with her star act; she is intense and hot. She never misses a bit of the awkward humor, and her scenes with Andrew Barth Feldman are surprisingly sweet.

The film isn’t particularly spectacular, with decent directorial effort. At the same time, the movie is enjoyable as a throwback to the raunchy comedies of the late 90s and early 00s that have become all but extinct. The positive reception of “No Hard Feelings” might give the summer comedy genre a new life. Here are a few films you might wanna watch if you liked “No Hard Feelings.”

1. The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)

This movie comes closest to “No Hard Feelings” thematically. Both films deal with a virgin getting laid.

Cristin Milioti To Star Opposite Elizabeth Olsen In FX Drama Pilot ‘Seven Sisters’

Cristin Milioti has joined the FX drama pilot Seven Sisters, starring opposite the previously announced Elizabeth Olsen.

In Seven Sisters, from FX Productions, a large, tight-knit family begins to unravel when a sister (Olsen) starts communicating with a voice no one else can hear, forcing them to confront long-buried secrets.

We understand Milioti will play the sister of Olsen’s character in a leading role.

Seven Sisters is executive produced by Will Arbery, who wrote the pilot; Sean Durkin, who will direct it; and Garrett Basch. If the pilot goes forward, it would mark Basch’s fifth series for FX, where his company Dive has a long-standing first-look deal, following Devs, Reservation Dogs, What We Do in the Shadows and Sterlin Harjo’s upcoming Tulsa noir drama starring Ethan Hawke.

Milioti most recently starred opposite Colin Farrell in Matt Reeves’s HBO miniseries The Penguin,...

Bill Murray And Kristen Wiig Set For Odd Couple Comedy Epiphany From Palm Springs’ Max Barbakow

Max Barbakow is well on his way becoming Hollywood's go-to guy for a good ol' odd couple comedy. His Palms Springs gave us a rom-com for the ages with Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti's time-loop trapped wedding guests Nyles and Sarah, while recent Prime Video caper Brothers offered up Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage on fine comedic form as criminal twins tackling one last job. And for his next project, Epiphany, Barbakow is bringing together another inspired pairing to tickle our funny bones. Per Deadline's reporting, Kristen Wiig and Bill Murray have been snapped up to star in the up-and-coming filmmaker's latest.

Poured from the pen of Murray's Scrooged collaborator Mitch Glazer, Epiphany will see Wiig star as the exceptionally named Favorite Ives, a fashionista heiress who spends a fortnight desperately seeking a new husband to keep her creditors at bay after her fortune suddenly evaporates before her eyes.

'There's A Twisted Exuberance': Brothers Director Dishes on the Wild Movie
Image
The Prime Video movie Brothers has been catching audiences by surprise. Not many film fans expected Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage to be starring in a comedy together. And nobody expected the movie to be as off-the-wall bonkers as it is. Even by the standards set by other stories about dysfunctional families, this one is different.

So how did it come together? To get more insight on the movie, Cbr spoke to Brothers director Max Barbakow, who's best known for another trippy film called Palm Springs. He talked about what attracted him to the story of Moke and Jady Munger, what it was like working with Brolin and Dinklage, and if his previous experience helped him stay on top of all the hilarious happenings in this movie.

Prime Video's Number 1 Movie Riffs on a 46-Year Old Clint Eastwood Actioner
Image
Brothers, which swiftly became the number one movie in America on Prime Video, is not shy about the fact that it is derivative of buddy-comedies past. From director Max Barbakow of Palm Springs and with a story by Ethan Cohen, it follows a pair of twins who come from a "long line of felons" as they embark on a reunion heist together. Brothers has quite the star-studded cast, with its trailer toting the phrase "Academy Award nominee" or "winner" multiple times, with supporting actors including the likes of Brendan Fraser, Glenn Close, and Marisa Tomei.

Aside from its impressive creative team and cast, the main selling point of Brothers was that it would be in the vein of other beloved films, particularly 1988s Twins, which creatives went on record stating that Brothers would be inspired by tonally. However, there is one film the romp is pulling from that is arguably less obvious.

Peter Dinklage & Josh Brolin's New Comedy Movie Is A Terrific Reminder To Watch This 95% Rt Rom-Com From 4 Years Ago
Image
The Josh Brolin/Peter Dinklage starring Brothers is a great reminder to check out an underrated rom-com from 2020. Brothers is a riff on the Schwarzenegger/DeVito comedy Twins, with Brolin and Dinklage playing criminal twin brothers who reunite to pull off one last score. The cast of Brothers 2024 is what makes the movie click, with the leads sharing great chemistry, while Glenn Close plays their untrustworthy mother and Brendan Fraser is the maniacal police officer chasing after them.

Despite the great ensemble, Brothers has received mixed to negative reviews, and currently sits at 41% on Rotten Tomatoes. Regardless, the comedy appears to have performed well for streamer Amazon during its first week of release, and some viewers really enjoyed the chemistry between Dinklage, Brolin and Closel whether that will lead to a Brothers 2 is another question. The movie is also the first by director Max Barakow in four years, following...

A New Action Comedy With Josh Brolin & Peter Dinklage Is A Prime Video Hit
Image
Netflix might be the biggest streamer in the game, but it's not entirely without competition. While the company has around 282 million subscribers, Amazon's Prime Video service isn't too far behind with 230 million users. Are a large contingent of those people just Amazon customers who happen to have a Prime Video account by virtue of signing up to the company's fast delivery service? Yes. Still, it's not as if Amazon's platform hasn't earned the right to challenge Netflix for streaming supremacy.

Prime Video has given us some standout hits such as the stellar video game adaptation "Fallout," and is, of course, home to the sweeping fantasy series "Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power." Are there also a few duds mixed in? Well, yes. Just take a look at the Bourne ripoff without an identity, "Citadel." But this is streaming after all, which requires a constant, er, stream of "content" to maintain itself,...

Brothers Review: The Movie Wastes Peter Dinklage & Josh Brolin's Comedic Potential
Image
The following contains spoilers for Brothers, now streaming on Prime Video.

Who would have thought that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito's Twins would get its spiritual successor in 2024? The stars of Brothers are Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage, who have found resounding success playing complicated characters, whether it's Brolin playing Llewelyn Moss in No Country for Old Men or Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones. Now in their mid-50s, they get to play twin brothers opposite each other, and the world is not quite ready to handle their chemistry just yet.

Directed by Palm Springs filmmaker Max Barbakow from a script by Macon Blair (with story by Etan Cohen), Brothers tells the story of career criminals Moke and Jady Munger. Literally partners in crime, they pull off jobs for years until their luck runs out one night. Five years later, what appears to be a simple...

Brothers 2 Can Replace The Missed Opportunity From Adam Drivers $50 Million Heist Comedy 7 Years Ago
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Amazon's Brothers below!A Brothers sequel could fulfill the failed franchise potential of a cult Adam Driver comedy. Although not officially a remake, Amazon's Brothers feels very much like an update of Twins. This hit 1988 comedy was essentially sold on the poster, where Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito were billed as identical twin brothers; hilarity ensued. The casting of Brothers is pulling a similar move, with Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage as mismatched criminal twins setting out to pull one last score. Along the way, they also reunite with their estranged, untrustworthy mother, played by Glenn Close.

Brothers has attracted lukewarm reviews thus far, but it can't be denied that Dinklage and Brolin share great chemistry. Even when the material is shaky, the two leads invest audiences in the relationship between the siblings, and the ending of Brothers leaves them on a hopeful note. They both appear...

Brothers Review: When Talent Transcends Material but Not Enough to Save the Day
Image
It seemed like the perfect premise for comedy—twin brothers Jady and Moke Munger reconnecting for one last criminal scheme, this time to track down the emeralds their mother stole decades ago. Directed by Max Barbakow, who scored big with the time-bending Palm Springs, and starring talented pros like Peter Dinklage and Josh Brolin in the leading roles, everything pointed to Brothers delivering the laughs. But as any movie lover knows, promising ingredients don’t always bake into a tasty cake.

Jady’s the thrill-seeking man just out of prison, while Moke has gone straight with a job, wife, and baby on the way. But Jady’s reluctant to leave crime behind and drags his reluctant brother back into the life when he shows up with a plan. They trace their criminal inclinations to their mother Cath, who split when they were young. Now the boys will cross paths with...

Brothers 2024 Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play In The Movie
Image
Prime Video's Brothers is accompanied by a unique soundtrack that perfectly matches its own quirky story. The film, directed by Max Barbakow (Palm Springs) and starring Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Josh Brolin (Avengers), Glenn Close (Dangerous Liaisons), and more, is a buddy road trip and heist crime comedy all in one. Naturally, this would require an equally interesting mix of songs to set the moodfrom artists like Jane's Addiction and Poison to Hal Leonard Jazz Band and Seor Soul. The various songs of the Brothers soundtrack brought the outrageous comedy easily to life.

Brothers follows a pair of twin brothers who have been partners in crimes since they were children. However, as adults, one was sent to prison while the other did all he could to get a clean start. Everything falls apart for the latter brother, Moke, when the former, Jady, gets out of prison under the terms...

What to watch this weekend October 18, 2024: Movie awards contenders
Image
Our top pick this week, “Woman of the Hour,” is the directorial debut of Academy Award nominee Anna Kendrick. Kendrick stars in this Netflix true-crime thriller as Cheryl Bradshaw, a woman who had a terrifying encounter with serial killer Rodney Alcala, whom she met when they both appeared on the game show “The Dating Game” in 1978. Daniel Zovatto, best known for appearing in horror movies like “It Follows” and “Don’t Breathe,” plays Alcala, with Tony Hale playing the host, who’s based on Jim Lange.

Kendrick is one of the few people to be nominated for the Triple Crown of Acting without winning in any category. She might get there someday, especially if she keeps making movies like this, a tense and thoughtful thriller with a 91% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Here are some other movies to stream this weekend:

“MaXXXine”: The third installment in Ti West and Mia Goth...

'Brothers' Review - Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage Anchor a Charming, Yet Overly Familiar Comedy
Image
From the folkloric tales of Cain and Abel, Romulus and Remus, or Set and Osirus, to films like The Godfather Part II, Step Brothers, or F9, brotherly relationships are often mined for a competitive sort of love that can fuel comedy and tragedy alike. Max Barbakow made waves directing the surprisingly excellent comedy Palm Springs, which premiered to popularity and critical acclaim thanks to its surprising high-concept approach to comedy and talented leads in Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti. His sophomore follow-up Brothers, follows a pair of brothers who become estranged when one of their criminal endeavors goes awry, leading one to a 5-year stint in the slammer while the other has since gone legitimate. They have to resolve their differences and reunite for one last job, in a charming crime caper that doesn't match the conceptual brilliance of Palm Springs but which sails by easily on the efforts and chemistry of its talented leads.

‘Brothers’ Review: Peter Dinklage and Josh Brolin Elevate a Crime Comedy With an Identity Crisis
Image
If you’re anything like me, when you saw the title for Max Barbakow’s new comedy “Brothers,” you thought, “Finally! A movie about brothers!”

I kid, I kid. But it’s not like there’s ever been any shortage of films about fraternal love and/or hatred: “Step Brothers,” “The Blues Brothers,” “The Sisters Brothers,” “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” “East of Eden,” “Fred Claus.” You know, the giants. Max Barbakow’s first feature, the hilarious “Palm Springs,” injected new vitality into the rom-com genre and the time loop drama at the same time. Could he also make a formulaic buddy comedy about two criminal siblings on a road trip seem special?

The answer is … a little, but let’s not go nuts. That, apparently, was the job of Barbakow’s cast. But we’ll get to that. First we have to introduce you to Peter Dinklage and Josh Brolin...

‘Brothers’ Review: Josh Brolin And Peter Dinklage Play Fraternal Twins (!) In Raucous And Hilarious Action Comedy
Peter Farrelly
Amazon Prime has lately shown a penchant for the kind of wacky action comedies studios aren’t flooding theatres with like they used to do. With films by Peter Farrelly, Paul Feig and others, the genre is alive and well in Culver City, and its acquisition of Palm Springs director Max Barbakow’s sophomore feature Brothers not only fits right into the mold but also manages to be a wildly entertaining example of how to do it.

What also makes this all work as well as it does is an exceptionally well-chosen cast of A-list actors working against type. What more do I have to say except that Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage are playing fraternal twins and Glenn Close is their conniving grifter mother! Throw in a X-rated love scene with a CGI orangutan and you have the recipe for madness, which Brothers delivers in the best slapstick style.

Crime comedy Brothers strains for wacky, achieves hacky

With its bland title, generic logline, and overqualified cast, the crime comedy Brothers seems made for the streaming-content junkyard—the eternal limbo of the if-you-liked recommendation queue. ‘It Was a Bizarre Day for Sure’: Max Barbakow Talks Directing Josh Brolin to Get Up Close and Personal with a CGI Orangutan in ‘Brothers’
Image
With “Palm Springs,” first-time director Max Barbakow achieved the kind of whirlwind debut most filmmakers only dream of.

The time-loop rom-com, which starred Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti as wedding guests forced to relive the same day over and over again, was the hit of the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Neon and Hulu acquired it in a record-breaking sale. The looming pandemic was serendipitous timing for a streaming debut, and “Palm Springs” ended up setting Hulu records when it came out that summer. Barbakow had a bona fide cultural phenomenon on his hands and seemingly became an established Hollywood director overnight.

How do you follow a once-in-a-decade success like “Palm Springs”? Barbakow decided to pivot to a good old-fashioned American heist comedy. His sophomore feature “Brothers” (now streaming on Prime Video) stars Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage as siblings who went in very different directions after their troubled youths. Dinklage’s...

“Brothers” on Prime Video – Movie Review: A Pleasant Family Heist Comedy
Josh Brolin
“Brothers” is a comedy movie starring Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage. With Brendan Fraser and Glenn Close. It is directed by Max Barbakow.

“Brothers” is reminiscent of classic comedies from yesteryears, centering on a family of thieves reuniting after many years. The film is filled with amusing escapades and humorous situations, much like the type of comedy one would have rented from a video store without expecting to remember much about it later.

The movie boasts a strong ensemble cast who, by all appearances, enjoyed their time during filming. The actors seem quite at ease in their comedic roles, contributing to the film’s light-hearted nature, even if the jokes are somewhat simplistic.

The plot follows two brothers who were raised with little discipline after their mother left them in the care of their grandmother following a heist that forced her to flee. Years later, the family reunites to retrieve...
