Screen Australia backs the development of 21 projects with $700,000

Monash, a drama about army officer John Monash from Bruce Beresford; a thriller from Jasper Jones author Craig Silvey and director Ben Young, Cage in the Wild; and a TV adaptation of novel The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart from Sarah Lambert and Made Up Stories are among the 21 projects to have recently received story development funding from Screen Australia.

The agency today announced seven television series, four online projects and 10 feature films will share in nearly $700,000.

Since July 2018, Screen Australia has had two strands for development funding: the Premium Fund for higher budget projects from established screen content makers, and the Generate Fund for lower budget projects with an emphasis on supporting emerging talent, or experienced talent wanting to take creative risks.

Screen Australia has announced more than $600,000 of story development funding for seven feature films, four television dramas and five online series.

The slate includes a currently untitled feature film from Little Monsters‘ Abe Forsythe, Jodi Matterson and Bruna Papandrea, based on a real missing person case in a remote Northern Territory town; TV series The Sisters Antipodes, produced by Asher Keddie and Imogen Banks, about estranged families who are pushed to opposite sides of the world; and an online series from writer/director Kauthar Abdulalim, Salma and the City, about a mother who sets her sights on winning the Australian Open

Screen Australia’s head of development Nerida Moore said: “It’s fantastic to see such strong applications coming through, and in this round we’ve noticed an increase in series as well as a lot of female writers attached to projects.

She Shoots, a Nsw-based initiative to address the gender disparity in commercial unscripted television camera and sound departments, has kicked off with a two-week workshop at Aftrs.

The program, a partnership between Screen Nsw, Aftrs, Women Nsw, Foxtel, Va Digital Hire and the Executive Women.s Television Group, intends to give training and professional development opportunities for female industry practitioners in camera and sound for reality TV.

The eight participants, made up of six camera and two sound recordists, were selected. from 57 applicants. They include Tamara Penniket, Charu Menon, Lara Del Arte, Alison Plasto, Gemma Thornton, Kaye Harrison, Aimee Mullins and Claudia Pickering.

Tropfest Australia call for entries
Filmmakers from across the globe are being encouraged to enter the world.s largest short film festival, Tropfest Australia.

Film buffs with an ace up their sleeve will have the opportunity to see their stories screened across Australia on Sunday December 6. Scores of filmmakers compete annually for the chance to be one of the 16 finalists whose short films premiere live to a national audience of around 150,000 as well as being broadcast on Sbs 2. Tropfest is open to anyone eager to tell their story through film. Entries are open now and close on Thursday October 8.
