Image
Producer Will Packer is teasing the Girls Trip sequel and recently revealed he has a script for a follow-up film.

While appearing on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live, Packer said that a sequel to the 2017 comedy is in the works.

“We actually are looking at doing an exotic locale — I can’t reveal it right now, but I do have a script for the first time,” Packer told host Andy Cohen after a fan asked if the sequel would take place at the AfroFuture musical festival in Ghana.

He continued: “Girls Trip is happening. Girls Trip 2. Bringing back all the ladies. And we’re going to add maybe some new ladies.”

The 7 Best Horror TV Shows of 2024
Image
There was a lot of good TV in 2024. It was an unusual year overall, the product of a post-strike Hollywood in the midst of a feverish industry-wide evolution from streaming to the cineplex, but plenty of great series still flowed throughout the year. Horror TV was no different: a slowdown in output didn’t mean a slowdown in quality, and there were a handful of outstanding horror shows in 2024 — a couple of them easily among the best shows of the year overall, and sadly, a couple of them also bowing out for their final seasons.

Here are our picks for the best of the best horror TV shows of 2024.

“Interview With the Vampire” Season 2 (AMC) ‘Interview With the Vampire’

“Interview With the Vampire’s” second season was some of the best television of the year, full stop, and definitely the best horror show of 2024. Jacob Anderson and Sam Reid continue...

Deborah Ayorinde Signs With Range Media Partners (Exclusive)
Image

The British-Nigerian actress most recently starred in the Lyric Hammersmith theater production of “Wedding Band,” directed by Monique Touko, which earned her a Stage Debut Award nomination for her performance. Set in the deep south of the U.S. in 1918 when interracial marriage was illegal, Julia (Ayorinde), a black seamstress, and Herman, a white baker, defy all odds with their secret love.

Up next, Ayorinde will star in the limited series “Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue” for MGM+, created and executive produced by Anthony Horowitz.

This past spring, Ayorinde led the second installment of Little Marvin’s limited anthology series for Prime Video, “Them: The Scare.” She also led the first installment “Them: Covenant,” which released in April 2021 and premiered at the SXSW, where it won an audience award for “Best Episodic Premiere.” The series explores terror in America with...

How Netflix's The Platform Combines Horror and Social Commentary
Image
Quick Links The Social Commentary of The Platform The Violence of Netflix's The Platform What the Horror Genre Can Learn From The Platform Franchise

The capabilities of the horror genre are what make it so special when done right. Across that spectrum of scares sits the horror movie with an eye for social commentary that can cut through an audience as sharply as the killer wielding the knife. Netflix's The Platform is an unappreciated gem tucked away in the corner that, despite its high concept, has plenty to say about class and starvation wrapped in a digestible and delicious coating. The Platform might appear simple in its metaphors of the plight of human survival, but its efficiency in establishing its world sits at the heart of what makes it so successful.

Social commentary can act as a weight around a movie's ankle, constantly holding it back from what it wants to be.

The Sequel to This 81% Dystopian Thriller Tops the Netflix Global Charts
Image
The Platform 2 just debuted on Netflix and it's a huge hit. The movie is a sequel to the 2019's The Platform, a dystopian thriller about a prison where the inmates are fed via a descending platform that starts at the top level and proceeds to the bottom.

The Platform 2 was released on Netflix on Oct. 4, and it was a major success because it topped the Global charts for the week between Sept. 30 and Oct. 4 with 19.4 million, and 32.6 million hours viewed, making it the most-viewed title overall. Considering the sequel had only two days to make a statement, it not only met expectations but exceeded them. Based on Netflix's records from 2019, the original amounted to 56 million views in its first four weeks, Bloomberg shared in a 2020 article.

Netflix Sci-fi horror Sequel The Platform 2 Tops Global Chart
Image
The sequel to the hit Netflix dystopian thriller The Platform, aptly titled The Platform 2, has now been unleashed and has quickly topped the global streaming charts (via FlixPatrol). While audiences are clearly tuning in for another bite of this Spanish sci-fi horror series, the critical response has been a little more unsavory, with The Platform 2 now sitting at a divisive 50% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with just 25% from audiences on the "Popcornmeter."

So, what are the critics saying about our return to the "Vertical Self-Management Center" prison, a brutal system which sees a platform of food work its way down different levels. Pro tip, dont find yourself at the bottom. Robert Daniels of RogerEbert.com gave the sequel just 1.5/4, and sees no reason why a follow-up was needed.

Within the first half an hour of director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutias The Platform 2, its apparent that this return is indeed a grave error.

Who Was Dominic Orlando: The Writer & Playwright's Tribute Explained

Dominic Orlando gets a special mention in the season 2 premiere of Amazon Prime's horror series Them, and for good reason. The Platform 2 Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed - How Does It Compare To Netflix's 2019 Original Movie?
Image
After the wild success of the original, The Platform 2 is disappointing for critics and audiences alike. The sequel to the original 2019 movie, it continues to tell the story of convicts in a vertical prison. With food distributed from the top floor and being sent down, the top floors horde everything available, leaving the bottom floors to starve. The original movie was led by Ivn Massagu's Goreng, but The Platform 2's cast is led by Milena Smit's Perempuan. Its sequel was just released on September 27.

While the first movie enjoyed immense success on Rotten Tomatoes, its follow-up is struggling. It currently sits at a 55% Tomatometer score, and audiences have offered a painful 29% Popcornmeter score. By contrast, the original has an 81% Tomatometer score and a 73% Popcornmeter score. After so much success for the first movie, it is struggling to achieve the original's relative acclaim.

Pam Griers Hit Returning Horror Show Redeems Her 22% Rotten Tomatoes Stephen King Movie From Last Year

Pam Grier's performance in Them: The Scare redeems her previous horror role in Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. Them: The Scare surpasses Grier's past horror projects, achieving a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Grier's involvement in Them highlights her dramatic talent and solidifies her place in the horror genre.

Pam Grier's role in Them: The Scare not only helps elevate the horror series, but also redeems the 74-year-old's previous horror appearance in a 2023 Stephen King adaptation. In a career spanning five decades, Pam Grier has taken on a variety of roles including several high-profile horror projects. However, while some have been more successful than others, the failure of Grier's 2023 project means that Them: The Scare comes as a welcome return to form.

Returning Horror Show With 100% On Rotten Tomatoes Is Amazon's Perfect Replacement For American Horror Story
Image
Them: The Scare is a top horror anthology series with a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, offering a refreshing alternative to American Horror Story. Them: The Scare's intricate themes, including systemic racism, set it apart from AHS's recent disappointments and bring a gripping psychological horror experience. LAPD Detective Dawn Reeve unravels a sinister murder in Them: The Scare, starring Deborah Ayorinde, boosting its popularity on Amazon Prime Video.

A returning horror show with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score is a great American Horror Story replacement. Since premiering its very first season back in 2012, American Horror Story has maintained its status as one of the longest-running horror anthology series currently on television. While some seasons of American Horror Story are certainly better than others, American Horror Story: Delicate, the series' twelfth and most recent season, was rated as one of the worst in the entire franchise.

The following contains spoilers for Them Season 2, now streaming on Prime Video.

Prime Video stunned fans with Them Season 1, which many felt maintained the same quality as Jordan Peele's work. Like Get Out and Nope, the series explored the history, sociopolitical and socioeconomical issues plaguing Black families in America. The first season focused on the Emory family being haunted by supernatural villains. Star Deborah Ayorinde transitions from "Lucky" in Season 1 to Detective Dawn Reeve in Season 2 with confidence. Them's shift to the early '90s in Los Angeles reflects societal tremors post-Rodney King incident, unafraid to tackle racism.

Them: The Scare Review: The Gore & Terror Are Dialed Back, for Better & Worse
Image
Them's first season -- entitled Them: Covenant -- was conceived and marketed as Amazon Prime's answer to the highly successful horror anthology franchise American Horror Story. Its key selling point was its pronounced and overt socio-political and racially-charged edge Them was clearly one of the new-age horror stories inspired by Jordan Peele's socially-aware brand of horror movies, most notably Get Out. The first season told the gruesome tale of the Black Emory family moving from South Carolina to a White neighborhood in Los Angeles during the 50s. Specifically, during the height of the historical Second Great Migration in a pre-Civil Rights world. Violence, intrigue, torment, torture, racism and death ensued with mixed results.

Three years later, Them returned with a new season and story. Now set in Los Angeles in 1991, Them: The Scare centers around Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) homicide detective Dawn Reeve -- played with triumphant aplomb...

‘Them: The Scare’ Recap (Episodes 1-8): Everything That Happens In Season 2
Image
Racism and abandonment form the crux of the deeply tragic horror story Them: The Scare. Sadly, though, the two extremely important subject matters don’t quite gel well, thanks to the writers’ inability to find a seamless blend. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad show, though; it’s just that the latest season of Prime Video’s horror anthology series falls quite short of being something truly great. The in-your-face yellow filter also plays a role in that. It would have been much better had the show done away with it. What really works is the absolutely terrific acting performance by the cast, led by the magnificent Deborah Ayorinde, who returns to play a new character. Pam Grier is very impressive as the mother of Ayorinde’s lead, although she could have been utilized a lot more. And never in my life would I have imagined seeing someone...

Them: The Scare Review: Season 2 Of Prime Videos Horror Anthology Delivers A Lot, Except The Horror

The acting shines, especially Deborah Ayorinde's performance as Dawn, but the season lacks overall engagement. Pam Grier is underused, and the visuals impress, but the story drags and lacks a strong central focus. Despite high production value, Them: The Scare fails to deliver on the horror promised, leaving audiences wanting.

Them, the divisive horror anthology series, has returned to Prime Video for season 2 with a new chapter entitled The Scare. Created by Little Marvin, the series features Deborah Ayorinde, who returns in a new role as Dawn Reeve, an LAPD detective tasked with solving the brutal murders committed by a mysterious and evil presence. While the show boasts several praiseworthy aspects, the storys overall significance seems to be missing. Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Deborah Ayorinde and Joshua J. Williams star together as mother and son in the second season of Prime Video's Them, known this time as Them: The Scare. For Ayorinde, it marks her second appearance in the anthology series; now, she portrays LAPD Detective Dawn Reeve, who is investigating a string of bizarre murders. Williams is a new addition to the series, portraying Ayorinde's son, Kel Reeve, and while the young actor might only have a handful of roles under his belt thus far, it's clear that he has the potential to be a star.

MovieWeb recently sat down with Ayorinde and Williams to dive into Them: The Scare, what it was like for Ayorinde to return to the mind of creator Little Marvin, and how Williams' first experience went. Both agreed on one thing: Little Marvin is a genius. Williams also touched...

Them: The Scare Creator Little Marvin & Star Deborah Ayorinde Talk Season Two
Little Marvin
If you've seen the trailers, then you know Them: The Scare will surely be unlike anything else on television.

The black horror anthology returns for a second season on Prime Video, with a new story and landscape at the forefront but the same scares the first season evoked.

TV Fanatic was lucky enough to participate in the Them: The Scare press day, where we chatted with series creator Little Marvin and Deborah Ayorinde, who returns to the series in a new role.

While the first season, Them: Covenant, was set in 1953 and followed a black family moving from North Carolina to an all-white neighborhood in Los Angeles, this season takes place in 1991.

The story stays in Los Angeles but changes the timeframe, introducing a new set of circumstances for the new cast of characters.

Little Marvin, the mastermind behind the innovative series, was inspired by many things when creating this universe.

Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

The second season of Prime Video's horror anthology series, Them, drops on April 25, 2024, and while the first season was dubbed Covenant, this time around it's being billed as Them: The Scare, and takes viewers from the 1953 setting of the first season, all the way to 1991 Los Angeles after the release of the Rodney King video when racial tensions are at their peak. It sees the return of Deborah Ayorinde in the lead role, only this time, instead of playing a homemaker, she finds herself acting as an LAPD Detective investigating a string of bizarre murders.

Joining Ayorinde in the new season are Luke James, Joshua J. Williams, and legendary icon Pam Grier, who portrays Ayorinde's mother, Athena. MovieWeb recently had the opportunity to sit down with Grier to talk about her role in Them: The Scare, and what it was like to...

‘Them: The Scare’ Team Talks Family Connections, Fears & Horror Influences
Image
Them has never shied away from exploring some of the darkest parts of America’s history. The first season of this anthology series was centered around the Great Migration of the 1950s and virulent racism in suburban America, and now the second season (all episodes drop on April 25 on Prime Video) focuses on Los Angeles circa 1991, in the direct aftermath of Rodney King’s assault at the hands of the LAPD. This is where we find Detective Dawn Reeves, as she wrestles with racism and misogyny from her colleagues, familial turmoil, and most terrifyingly, a malevolent entity terrorizing Los Angelenos all over the city — with her loved ones potentially the next targets. Family Ties Much of what drives Them: The Scare is Detective Reeves’ fierce devotion to her son, Kel (Joshua J. Williams), and her mother, Athena (Pam Grier), particularly in the face of grounded and supernatural threats alike. The...

We had the pleasure in speaking to the actress about this unique task set for her.

We also spoke to two newcomers to the show, in Luke James and Joshua J. Williams, as they speak about their roles, and their passion for horror. Naturally, we spoke to all three about collaborating with the screen icon that is Pam Grier. You can watch all of our interviews below in their entirety.
