Cruel Summer, the thriller executive produced by Jessica Biel, is being resurrected two years after its quiet cancellation. Blending nostalgia with murder mystery, Cruel Summer premiered on Freeform in April 2021. The first season centered on two teenage girls, unfolding in the mid-1990s, and zeroing in on what happens when one of those girls disappears and the other seemingly takes her place.

The show embraced an anthology format, taking place in the same overall universe but focusing on a different Cruel Summer cast. The second outing didn't create the same buzz as the first, coming after significant creative changes behind the scenes, and the thriller was quietly cancelled in December 2023.

Varietyis now reporting that Cruel Summer is being eyed for a potential revival on Hulu and Freeform, with original star Olivia Holt set to return as Kate Wallis. Holt, seen recently as the co-lead of the horror rom-com Heart Eyes opposite Mason Gooding,...

Maybe it’s not such a cruel summer after all. Variety has learned exclusively from sources that a third season of “Cruel Summer” is currently in development at Hulu and Freeform.

Olivia Holt would star in and executive produce the new season, reprising the role of Kate Wallis from Season 1 of the series. In addition, Cori Uchida and Adam Lash have boarded as showrunners and executive producers. Jessica Biel and Michelle Purple would once again executive produce via Iron Ocean. Lionsgate TV is the studio.

Reps for Disney declined to comment.

If the plot of Time Cut sounds a bit familiar, it should, Totally Killer covered much of the same ground not that long ago. But despite being released second, Time Cut was actually filmed a year before Totally Killer was announced. Maybe it should have used its time machine to get to our screens first.

The film begins in 2003 in Sweetly, Minnesota, where a killer known as The Sweetly Slasher has been targeting the local teens. Summer’s best friend Emmy was one of the victims, and she’s forced herself to come to the party honouring her and the other victims.

Unfortunately, the party gets some uninvited guests in the form of the police and The Sweetly Slasher himself. In the confusion, Summer ends up becoming a victim herself.

Move over, "Back to the Future," because there's another time-travel movie currently tearing it up on streaming that's making an entire generation of moviegoers feel their age. Marty McFly famously took that classic DeLorean for a spin in 1985 and transported himself 30 years into the past to the age of "The Honeymooners," Enchantment Under the Sea dances, and other throwback details ripped straight out of the '50s. Netflix’s 2024 sci-fi thriller Time Cut manages to capture the nostalgic vibe of the early 2000s through its time-travel narrative, and to emulate the teen drama of the period, the majority of the characters, except for Lucy, who belongs to the present timeline, are deliberately presented as stereotypes. While the plot itself doesn’t offer much scope for the characters to make a mark, the feel-good factor of seeing familiar teen drama tropes playing out might feel endearing to the intended audience.

Just like Totally Killer, a movie that came out only a year ago, this new slasher flings a final girl to the distant past so that she can solve a loved one’s murder. Yes, Time Cut was technically announced first, but the movie has the misfortune of being released later rather than sooner. And today, in an age where nostalgia bait runs rampant, the plot already feels outdated.

While the ‘80s and ‘90s tend to be the go-to destinations in these kinds of movies, Time Cut takes us back to the less visited early-aughts. 2003, to be exact. Madison Bailey’s character Lucy realizes her new surroundings like any teen time traveler might nowadays: by song. In this needle dropper set to Hilary Duff’s “So Yesterday,” the movie rolls out a parade of the decade’s greatest fashion don’ts.

Hannah Macpherson’s “Time Cut” rehashes a slasher thriller and a time travel trope to painfully boring, contrived ends. The writing recycles every conceivable cliché and emotions dry up quickly, despite a pretty big sentimental hook to the narrative. Buried deep within is a story of sisters finding a connection. There’s scope for trauma addressing and coming to terms with grief but the film barely steps into it. Instead what we get is an overwrought yet anemic film that reverse-engineers temporalities only to render a flat, unconvincing, and wooden plotline.

The screenplay piles on a series of convenient narrative turns that don’t even latch onto a plausible thread. There’s no attempt made to spin a decent explanation, though we gauge gestures being made towards it through introducing a company that has link-ups with the time machine. For Millennials, Time Cut opens with perhaps the scariest cinematic moment of the year. For here is a slasher dealing in nostalgia for a bygone era, a time so long ago that you can now pointedly revive its fashion and music and cultural references as a wink-nudge counterpoint to the present day. On the one hand, it takes a genre conceit that should be a layup and sleepwalks right through it, in a way that implies the audience deserves no effort beyond what it took to get them to press play. As if those who love slashers or time-travel movies are won over by premises alone, not the passion and creativity of their execution. Certain scenes left me feeling more insulted than disappointed.

Netflix's Time Cut not only presents a thrilling time travel story that switches between two timelines but also makes good use of its background score to reflect the time period it is set in. In its opening moments, Time Cut briefly features a segment from 2003 before jumping ahead to the present day and introducing its main character, Lucy. However, after setting the foundation for its main character beats, the movie unfolds its time travel narrative and falls back into its 2003 timeline.

Directed by Hannah Macpherson, Time Cut cleverly reflects these timeline shifts in its narrative through several subtle narrative devices. For instance, when Lucy finds herself in 2003, the first thing she notices is the mid-aughts fashion. The more her story progresses in the 2003 timeline, the more the movie features original songs from the time to effectively instill nostalgia in viewers who grew up during that period.

American Vandal remains one of Netflixs most heartbreaking cancelation casualties. The show proved it was unique in both concept and execution, despite its short, two-season run. The premise of the show centered around two amateur high school documentary filmmakers, Peter Maldonado (Tyler Alvarez) and Sam Eckland (Griffin Gluck), who take on minor misdemeanor cases in an attempt to prove the accused is not guilty and uncover the truth. Stylistically, the show is framed as a mockumentary, utilizing interviews, digital recreations and CCTV footage the whole show is pieced together in the same manner as a true-crime documentary. However, the show balances its serious tone with the ridiculousness of the cases to create biting satire, never needing to stoop to slapstick humor. American Vandal criticizes the formulation of true crime whilst maintaining its own identity; it is truly one of a kind and deserves more recognition.

Netflix has bulked up its slate to include many a thriller, slasher, horror and other suspenseful films, both original to the streamer and classic, for October and the spookiest month of the year.

Several options for other moods arrived on the first of the month for viewers to choose from including 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, 8 Mile, The Birds, Bridesmaids, It Chapter Two, Halloween (2018), Psycho, Psycho II, Scarface and more.

Just a few weeks after Outer Banks returns for its fourth season on October 10, one of the show's stars has another project hitting Netflix at the end of the month. Madison Bailey will star in Time Cut, the time travel/slasher horror film which follows a high school student who travels back in time to 2003 to stop a serial killer from murdering her sister. Netflix dropped the first trailer for the upcoming film on both YouTube and its official X account, which shows Bailey alongside her co-stars, Antonia Gentry and Michael Shanks. Griffin Gluck, best known for his roles in Locke & Key and American Vandal, will also star in the film, alongside Curse of Chucky veteran Summer H. Howell and When Night Is Falling alum Rachael Crawford.

Netflix has shared the official trailer, posters, and photos for Time Cut, an upcoming sci-fi slasher film directed by Hannah Macpherson, who co-wrote the script with Michael Kennedy. Kennedy wrote the story.

In Time Cut, Madison Bailey plays a teenage girl who travels back to the early 2000s to stop a vicious killer from murdering her sister, played by Antonia Gentry. The movie will be available to stream on October 30, just in time for Halloween.

The cast includes Madison Bailey, Antonia Gentry, Michael Shanks, Griffin Gluck, Rachael Crawford, and Jordan Pettle.

Megan Best, Samuel Braun, Sydney Sabiston, and Kataem O’Connor round out the cast.

The Ace Entertainment production began principal photography on July 6, 2021, and filming ended in August 2021. Matt Kaplan and Christopher Landon are the producers.

The executive producers include Christopher Foss, Matthew Janzen, Max Siemers, and Aubrey Bendix. The cinematography was by Tony Mirza and the late Halyna Hutchins.
