Cruel Summer, the thriller executive produced by Jessica Biel, is being resurrected two years after its quiet cancellation. Blending nostalgia with murder mystery, Cruel Summer premiered on Freeform in April 2021. The first season centered on two teenage girls, unfolding in the mid-1990s, and zeroing in on what happens when one of those girls disappears and the other seemingly takes her place.
The show embraced an anthology format, taking place in the same overall universe but focusing on a different Cruel Summer cast. The second outing didn't create the same buzz as the first, coming after significant creative changes behind the scenes, and the thriller was quietly cancelled in December 2023.
Varietyis now reporting that Cruel Summer is being eyed for a potential revival on Hulu and Freeform, with original star Olivia Holt set to return as Kate Wallis. Holt, seen recently as the co-lead of the horror rom-com Heart Eyes opposite Mason Gooding,...

Maybe it’s not such a cruel summer after all. Variety has learned exclusively from sources that a third season of “Cruel Summer” is currently in development at Hulu and Freeform.
Olivia Holt would star in and executive produce the new season, reprising the role of Kate Wallis from Season 1 of the series. In addition, Cori Uchida and Adam Lash have boarded as showrunners and executive producers. Jessica Biel and Michelle Purple would once again executive produce via Iron Ocean. Lionsgate TV is the studio.
Reps for Disney declined to comment.
“Cruel Summer” was originally created by Bert V. Royal. The series debuted on Freeform in 2021 and quickly became the most-watched show in the network’s history. It was renewed for a second season not long after its launch, but it was later reported that the show would go the anthology route with an entirely new cast, new storyline, and...

Given how shows like "The Wire" and "The Sopranos" helped turn HBO into the destination for quality television in the late '90s and early 2000s, it isn't too surprising that Netflix would see a similar rise to prominence off the back of its own well-received crime-influenced series like "House of Cards," "Orange is the New Black," and even "Bloodline." It causes one to wonder what exactly it is about these stories that makes them so central to the midwifing of new eras of television -- perhaps such crime dramas, universally captivating despite often being too violent, disturbing, and complicated for mainstream TV, naturally find themselves at home wherever risks are most welcome.
Whatever the case, Netflix is now where many go for the thrills that a simulated life of crime can offer. Whether a viewer is looking for a classic series that predated the streamer's existence or is willing...

There are love stories that bloom, burn, and vanish before they’re even labelled. And then there’s whatever happened between Sabrina Carpenter and Griffin Gluck: a quiet storm that spoke in silence, costumes, and cryptic captions.
If romantic ambiguity were a sport, this pair deserved a gold medal and a standing ovation. From matching denim ensembles to an apology that didn’t say names but said everything else, their connection was never textbook, yet impossible to overlook.
We’ve read between the lines, squinted at the dates, and traced the timelines like a detective who’s listened to Feather on repeat and it’s time we talk about the apology, the shade, and the sighs.

Brooklyn Decker is 5 feet 9 inches (175.3 cm) tall and wears a shoe size 9 (US). The American actress, recognized for her roles in movies like “Just Go With It” and “Battleship,” towers over many of her counterparts in the industry.

To put it in perspective, in a 2011 interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, Decker amusingly remarked on her height difference with Friends actress Jennifer Aniston, saying, “She’s [Jennifer Aniston] tiny! She’s so little, but then I’m like 5ft 9ins so I’m a giant compared to most people, but she’s so little and petite and the cutest thing”.

For the past few years, Netflix could fairly be accused of employing a strategy of throwing everything they've got against a wall and seeing what sticks. With new series and original films premiering on a weekly basis, viewers are both spoiled for choice and browbeaten into submission with the sheer quantity of options at their fingertips. But let's be honest, quality control hasn't exactly been the name of the game for the streamer. They traffic in numbers, pure and simple, and with enough content there's sure to be some projects that end up being winners. That's just the law of probabilities.
But this approach has an unintended side effect, in that plenty of genuinely good shows fall by the wayside, ignored by viewers in a media landscape where its physically impossible to pay attention to every new release. Whether they were cancelled too early, failed to find an audience, or...

Sabrina Carpenter has been taking over the music scene with her irresistibly catchy tunes; her latest album, Short n’ Sweet, is no exception. The multi-talented singer and actress has been making waves, not just for her music but also for her eventful love life. From high-profile romances to whirlwind flings, her relationships have often found their way into her songs, keeping fans buzzing with speculation.
Even before she dropped the steamy lyrics of her newest album, Carpenter’s dating history had already been a hot topic. Over the years, she’s been linked to fellow Disney stars, had romances that inspired heartfelt tracks, and experienced fleeting connections that were, well, short and sweet.

While the album’s title may hint at her petite stature, Carpenter has clarified that it’s actually a nod to past relationships, some of which, despite their brief duration, left an impact on her.

She ruled the Billboard charts in 2024 with her hit songs "Espresso," "Please Please Please," and "Taste." Her "Short n' Sweet" world tour filled arenas across the United States and Canada. To top it all off, she walked away from the 2025 Grammys with two awards for Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album. Of course, we're talking about the entendre-loving pop superstar and short queen, Sabrina Carpenter.
To the casual pop culture consumer, it might seem like Sabrina Carpenter popped up out of nowhere in 2024 to take the music world by storm, but that's hardly the case. Carpenter has been a dedicated performer since she was a pre-teen, finding success as a star on the Disney Channel and releasing her debut album, "Eyes Widen Open," all the way back in 2015. Netflix's first original shows went on for a while. Early, revolutionary hits like "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black" endured for many seasons, thanks to the streamer giving them a chance to find an audience and develop their worlds fully. A few years in, though, Netflix became known for its willingness to give each and every show the chop. If your show is not a massive hit when it drops, it seems, they're no longer willing to invest in your success by letting you stick around. It's a shame, as many canceled Netflix shows might've become something truly great had they been given more of a shot.
But ... is television only worthwhile if it goes on ad infinitum? In all this "Netflix cancels things too early" discourse, there's a sense that television is only worth watching if it all ends — preferably many years from now — with a pitch-perfect final episode,...

James Franco and Bryan Cranston's 2016 comedy Why Him? has found fresh popularity on streaming, despite its lowly Rotten Tomatoes score. Directed and co-written by Me Time's John Hamburg, the movie tells the story of a father who tries to stop his daughter's immature millionaire boyfriend from proposing to her. Featuring a cast that also includes Megan Mullally, Zoey Deutch, Griffin Gluck, and Keegan-Michael Key, the movie was a box office success, grossing almost $120 million against a production budget of $52 million, despite largely negative critical reviews.
Now, despite the movie's low Rotten Tomatoes score, and negative critical reception, it is enjoying new-found success on the streaming platform, Hulu. The site has Why Him? ranked at the No. 1 spot on its list of Top 15 Movies Today, for Friday, November 8, though which it achieved by beating out the rest of the top five, which includes successful movies such as the original Madagascar movie at No.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Time Cut.
This article mentions attempted suicide.
Although Time Cut is filled with plot holes and time travel inaccuracies, it does include a strange scene that could tease a fascinating plot twist. Netflix's Time Cut cast carries the story through two time periods, although most of the plot unfolds in 2003. The main storyline revolves around a serial killer known only as the Sweetly Slasher, and the efforts of Madison Bailey's Lucy Field and her two accomplices to stop Time Cut's villain. However, the defeat of the Slasher may not completely dispel the threat.
The identity of Time Cut's Sweetly Slasher is eventually revealed to be Griffin Gluck's Quinn, but a version of him from twenty years in the future who has become increasingly bitter at being romantically rejected by Antonia Gentry's Summer Field - Lucy's sister. Although Time Cut's...

Netflix's latest horror thriller Time Cut is an energetic whodunnit movie leaping between modern-day gloom and early 2000s nostalgia. Fusing the fun of classic slashers like Scream with the time-traveling tropes of Back to the Future and its continued reimaginings, Director Hannah Macpherson, best known for mystery series T@gged and School Spirits, offers a new take on dealing with the past, its grief, and the consequences of forging a new future.
Time Cut stars Madison Bailey (Outer Banks) as Lucy, a teenage, aspiring astronomer forced to grow up in the shadow of her sister Summer (Atonia Gentry) following her murder in 2003. After stumbling upon a time machine, Lucy is sent into the past, right before the masked killer who took the life of Summer and her friends begins his rampage. Too all of the slasher film nerds who enjoy Scream or You're Next, Netflix's October 30 release Time Cut, directed by Hannah MacPherson, adds in the sci-fi element of time travel to the formula. The main cast features Madison Bailey, who plays Lucy; Antonia Gentry, who plays Summer; and Griffin Gluck, who plays Quinn. The film centers around Lucy, who stumbles upon a time machine and ends up back in April 16, 2003, a few days before her sister and a few of her friends are killed by a masked serial killer.
I am a fan of slasher films that loop in elements of sci-fi and time travel, like in the Happy Death Day series. I was ready to see a newer film that intertwines sci-fi with horror and to see some gruesome kills. Did Time Cut give me what I wanted?

Spoilers ahead for Time Cut!
This article mentions attempted suicide and also includes spoilers for Netflix's Time Cut movie.
Netflix's Time Cut features some interesting takes on its biggest sci-fi trope, but the movie also introduces a huge concept as part of the film's lore and then never revisits it - despite the fact it should have come into play many times. Although Time Cut is filled with hidden references and Easter Eggs, the story's time travel logic is, at best, a little shaky. At worst, the movie's canon is a thrown-together mess, and one aspect of Time Cut's worldbuilding demonstrates that perfectly.
Netflix's new temporal adventure falls very short of making the list of best time travel movies of all time, but despite Time Cut's time travel rules being riddled with issues, it's still a relatively fun ride. Hardcore sci-fi fans will likely find Time Cut's plot holes distracting,...

If the plot of Time Cut sounds a bit familiar, it should, Totally Killer covered much of the same ground not that long ago. But despite being released second, Time Cut was actually filmed a year before Totally Killer was announced. Maybe it should have used its time machine to get to our screens first.
The film begins in 2003 in Sweetly, Minnesota, where a killer known as The Sweetly Slasher has been targeting the local teens. Summer’s best friend Emmy was one of the victims, and she’s forced herself to come to the party honouring her and the other victims.
Unfortunately, the party gets some uninvited guests in the form of the police and The Sweetly Slasher himself. In the confusion, Summer ends up becoming a victim herself.

Move over, "Back to the Future," because there's another time-travel movie currently tearing it up on streaming that's making an entire generation of moviegoers feel their age. Marty McFly famously took that classic DeLorean for a spin in 1985 and transported himself 30 years into the past to the age of "The Honeymooners," Enchantment Under the Sea dances, and other throwback details ripped straight out of the '50s. This time around, well, the year 2003 is apparently considered long enough ago to merit an entire movie aimed towards Gen Z, where teenaged characters travel back a whopping 20 years to a long-ago time of low-rise jeans, Walkmans, and needle drops of Hilary Duff's "So Yesterday." Every Millennial reading this probably just felt a chill go up their spine.

Just Go with It's soundtrack features the perfect mix of songs to usher the story toward every step of the way. The romantic comedy stars Adam Sandler as a plastic surgeon whose big move is to pretend he is married so he can hook up with women without ever having to call them again. However, when he thinks he has found a girl he would want to marry for real, he needs his work assistant (Jennifer Aniston) to pretend to be his soon-to-be ex-wife. Of course, this leads to an even more outrageous series of events and an unlikely love story.
Just Go with It was initially released back in 2011, but it has arrived to streaming on Netflix in 2024. Directed by Dennis Dugan, the Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston movie stars Brooklyn Decker, Bailee Madison, Nicole Kidman, Griffin Gluck, and more. Just Go with It also features a soundtrack...

Netflix’s 2024 sci-fi thriller Time Cut manages to capture the nostalgic vibe of the early 2000s through its time-travel narrative, and to emulate the teen drama of the period, the majority of the characters, except for Lucy, who belongs to the present timeline, are deliberately presented as stereotypes. While the plot itself doesn’t offer much scope for the characters to make a mark, the feel-good factor of seeing familiar teen drama tropes playing out might feel endearing to the intended audience.
Lucy Field Played by Madison Bailey
Actor Madison Bailey is relatively well known thanks to her multiple small screen appearances. She played the role of Wendy Hernandez in CW’s superhero series, Black Lightning, and also appeared in Netflix’s hit series, Outer Banks, where she portrayed the role of Kiara. A sense of déjà vu is inevitable when watching Hanna MacPherson’s Time Cut. Just like Totally Killer, a movie that came out only a year ago, this new slasher flings a final girl to the distant past so that she can solve a loved one’s murder. Yes, Time Cut was technically announced first, but the movie has the misfortune of being released later rather than sooner. And today, in an age where nostalgia bait runs rampant, the plot already feels outdated.
While the ‘80s and ‘90s tend to be the go-to destinations in these kinds of movies, Time Cut takes us back to the less visited early-aughts. 2003, to be exact. Madison Bailey’s character Lucy realizes her new surroundings like any teen time traveler might nowadays: by song. In this needle dropper set to Hilary Duff’s “So Yesterday,” the movie rolls out a parade of the decade’s greatest fashion don’ts.

Hannah Macpherson’s “Time Cut” rehashes a slasher thriller and a time travel trope to painfully boring, contrived ends. The writing recycles every conceivable cliché and emotions dry up quickly, despite a pretty big sentimental hook to the narrative. Buried deep within is a story of sisters finding a connection. There’s scope for trauma addressing and coming to terms with grief but the film barely steps into it. Instead what we get is an overwrought yet anemic film that reverse-engineers temporalities only to render a flat, unconvincing, and wooden plotline.
The screenplay piles on a series of convenient narrative turns that don’t even latch onto a plausible thread. There’s no attempt made to spin a decent explanation, though we gauge gestures being made towards it through introducing a company that has link-ups with the time machine. It’s all very casually hamstrung a plot with the passage...

Netflix’s latest YA film, a slasher in multiple senses of the word, has arrived just in time for Halloween. The spooky film stars Antonia Gentry (Ginny & Georgia) and Madison Bailey (Outer Banks) as the Field sisters separated by time and space — twenty years of it. The film begins with Lucy (Madison Bailey) living the life of your normal average teenager on the anniversary of her sister’s death.
Bailey’s Lucy, who wants to intern for NASA in Washington D.C. over the summer and has the brains to figure out time travel, stumbles upon a mysterious machine at the site of her sister’s death back that allows her to go back in time to the early aughts from the current day to try and save Gentry’s Summer from a serial killer known as the Sweetly Slasher. Ask any baby and they’ll tell you, nothing beats a good formula. When you’ve got a recipe for success, it makes sense to keep replicating it. At least until it stops working.
Which brings me to screenwriter Michael Kennedy, whose last three scripts have been slasher movies with an elevator-friendly pitch, combining the familiar tropes of a popular horror genre with the familiar tropes of a popular movie. The rightly acclaimed “Freaky,” co-written by Christopher Landon, took the plot of “Freaky Friday” and asked “What if it was a slasher?” The unfairly overlooked “It’s a Wonderful Knife” took the plot of “It’s a Wonderful Life” and asked “What if it was a slasher?”

For Millennials, Time Cut opens with perhaps the scariest cinematic moment of the year. For here is a slasher dealing in nostalgia for a bygone era, a time so long ago that you can now pointedly revive its fashion and music and cultural references as a wink-nudge counterpoint to the present day. That particular era? 2003. Time really does come for us all.
While the text card “April 13 2003” is likely to invoke more terror than anything else in the film, Time Cut remains a cheap and just-about-cheerful-enough 91-minute romp, with one or two interesting ideas among all the throwback references. This is the latest in the burgeoning ‘slash-up’ genre, taking the masked-killer horror trope and smashing it into another subgenre – and it comes with a script co-penned by one of the pioneers of the movement, Michael Kennedy, who co-wrote body-swap slasher Freaky, and the festive It’s A Wonderful Knife. Three years ago, it was announced that Freaky (watch it Here) collaborators Michael Kennedy and Christopher Landon would be teaming up again to bring us a new genre project called Time Cut, which was being described as “Back to the Future meets Scream” – and now, Time Cut has finally made its way out into the world! The movie is available to watch on the Netflix streaming service (you can read our review at This Link), and in the build-up to the release JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols had the chance to sit down for an interview with the film’s director, Hannah MacPherson, as well as the stars of the film, Madison Bailey and Antonia Gentry. You can find out what they had to say about Time Cut by checking out the video embedded above.

Plot: A high school student accidentally travels back to 2003 and decides to stop the serial killer who murdered her sister.
Review: Time travel and slashers seem to go together like peanut butter and jelly as this is now the second major streaming release in the last year to feature this Back to the Future meets Scream aesthetic. As such, I’m sure there are some that would immediately roll their eyes at the idea of approaching the subject matter again. But I’m not one of those people. Just like slasher movies, I’ll take as much time travel shenanigans as you’ll offer. And Time Cut certainly has plenty to offer…

Time Cut is a frustrating film, twice over. On the one hand, it takes a genre conceit that should be a layup and sleepwalks right through it, in a way that implies the audience deserves no effort beyond what it took to get them to press play. As if those who love slashers or time-travel movies are won over by premises alone, not the passion and creativity of their execution. Certain scenes left me feeling more insulted than disappointed.

Warning! This post contains spoilers for Time Cut.
Netflix's Time Cut not only presents a thrilling time travel story that switches between two timelines but also makes good use of its background score to reflect the time period it is set in. In its opening moments, Time Cut briefly features a segment from 2003 before jumping ahead to the present day and introducing its main character, Lucy. However, after setting the foundation for its main character beats, the movie unfolds its time travel narrative and falls back into its 2003 timeline.
Directed by Hannah Macpherson, Time Cut cleverly reflects these timeline shifts in its narrative through several subtle narrative devices. For instance, when Lucy finds herself in 2003, the first thing she notices is the mid-aughts fashion. The more her story progresses in the 2003 timeline, the more the movie features original songs from the time to effectively instill nostalgia in viewers who grew up during that period.

Movies are now treating the aughts like a second Stone Age. Hannah Macpherson’s Time Cut revels in the 2000s nostalgia of Avril Lavigne and Vanessa Carlton needledrops after a girl travels back in time to save her deceased family member from a slasher villain. Is your déjà vu intensifying?...

While presenting a gripping time travel drama, Netflix's Time Cut also features memorable performances from its talented cast members. Directed by Hannah MacPherson, Time Cut riffs on many familiar tropes of the slasher and time travel genre to walk viewers through a compelling tale of grief, revenge, and the ripple effect of one's actions. However, even though it does not cover new ground in the genre, it manages to instill nostalgia in viewers through its portrayal of the mid-aughts.
Apart from being nostalgic, Time Cut also features some edge-of-the-seat action and white-knuckling serial killer scenes that are enough to keep viewers hooked throughout its runtime. What makes its drama and action even more enthralling is the commendable performances of its cast members. Since Time Cut's cast plays a crucial role in making its time travel twists and turns more impactful, viewers may be curious about who plays whom...

Netflix mixes it up this Halloween season with Time Cut, a new horror sci-fi movie that celebrates the bonds of sisterhood. Directed by Hannah Macpherson and co-written by her and Michael Kennedy, the film centers on Lucy Field (played by Outer Banks star Madison Bailey), a teenager in 2024 who discovers a time machine that takes her back to 2003, when the sister she never met was last alive. Summer is a popular high schooler in the early aughts with no idea that a serial killer is about to end her life unless her baby sister saves her.
Bailey and Gentry both come from hit Netflix shows, and Time Cut gives them the opportunity to join forces and expand their current repertoire. The new movie not only blends genres, it also makes excellent use of 2000s music and fashion to paint a unique picture as Lucy and Summer try to outsmart and outlast their tormenter.

Netflix mixes sci-fi and slasher genres in the upcoming movie Time Cut, written and directed by Hannah Macpherson. American Vandal remains one of Netflixs most heartbreaking cancelation casualties. The show proved it was unique in both concept and execution, despite its short, two-season run. The premise of the show centered around two amateur high school documentary filmmakers, Peter Maldonado (Tyler Alvarez) and Sam Eckland (Griffin Gluck), who take on minor misdemeanor cases in an attempt to prove the accused is not guilty and uncover the truth. Stylistically, the show is framed as a mockumentary, utilizing interviews, digital recreations and CCTV footage the whole show is pieced together in the same manner as a true-crime documentary. However, the show balances its serious tone with the ridiculousness of the cases to create biting satire, never needing to stoop to slapstick humor. American Vandal criticizes the formulation of true crime whilst maintaining its own identity; it is truly one of a kind and deserves more recognition.

"We're not altering the future, we're just giving it a make-over." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a time travel slasher horror movie called Time Cut, arriving to watch on Netflix at the end of October in just a few weeks. "To stop this killer, they'll need to rewrite history." Didn't we already see this? Haven't they already done a time travel slasher before? From the producers of Freaky, also a twisted high school horror concept, in Time Cut a teenage girl travels back to the early 2000s to stop a vicious killer from murdering her sister. A teen in 2024 accidentally time-travels to 2003, days before a masked killer murders her sister. Can she change the past without destroying the future? Probably. This stars Madison Bailey & Antonia Gentry, with Michael Shanks, and Griffin Gluck, plus Rachael Crawford, Jordan Pettle, Megan Best, Samuel Braun, Sydney Sabiston, and Kataem O'Connor. Why does...

Three years ago, it was announced that Freaky (watch it Here) collaborators Michael Kennedy and Christopher Landon would be teaming up again to bring us a new genre project called Time Cut, which was being described as “Back to the Future meets Scream” – and now, Time Cut is finally ready to make its way out into the world! Netflix has announced that they will be releasing the movie on October 30th, just in time for Halloween viewings, and Entertainment Weekly has unveiled a first look image from the film that can be seen right here in this article.
Although Landon directed Freaky, he did not Time Cut. Instead, Hannah MacPherson, director of Sickhouse and the Into the Dark film Pure, took the helm. Kennedy wrote the initial script with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend story editor Sono Patel, then MacPherson got involved in the writing process as well. Landon produced the film with Matt Kaplan’s Ace Entertainment.
