Hidive's Controversial New Anime Highlights The Industry's Reliance on Fan Service
Image
Chained Soldier justifies its excessive and controversial fan service with its unique powers and deconstruction of gender stereotypes. However, the unnecessary inclusion of additional fan service in Chained Soldier detracts from the overall enjoyment of the show. Chained Soldier's use of fan service highlights the industry's reliance on this trope.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Chained Soldier episode #5The nuanced plot of the overly explicit new Hidive series Chained Soldier might convince critics who have the least amount of tolerance for this type of content to partially accept problematic tropes such as fan service. However, Chained Soldier's use of fan service is so excessive that it ironically justifies this form of controversial storytelling in almost every other anime series in existence at its own expense.

In anime, fan service usually only works for those who are specifically attracted by the use of this controversial practice. Anime-lovers who...

Film Review: re:member (2022) by Eiichiro Hasumi
Image
Over the course of his career, Eichiro Hasumi has been making quite a name for himself directing entertaining genre features, even though the majority of them is somewhat forgettable. Apart from “Assassination Classroom: Graduation” he is perhaps best known for this entries into the “Resident Evil”-franchise, “Infinite Darkness” and the upcoming “Death Island”, which cemented the reputation of the animated entries of the franchise being in many ways superior to the lukewarm features by the likes of Paul W.S. Anderson. In between these last two projects, he directed “re:member” (also known as “Re/Member”), which was released on Netflix, and which is his take on the horror genre, blending ideas from J-horror, the slasher genre and time travel movies.

Film Review: Re/Member (2022) by Eiichiro Hasumi
Image
The world of Asian cinema has seen a vast share of their most recent fare emanating from manga adaptations, with titles ranging from Rurouni Kenshin, “Death Note,” Blade of the Immortal, and Gantz finding their inspiration coming from its pages. Such is the origins of the latest Netflix release in Eiichiro Hasumi's adaptation of “Re/Member,” which started out as a multi-year run in the early 2010s and was followed by an anime adaptation several years later before this current live-action feature.

When she and Takahiro (Gordon Maeda), Atsushi, (Fuju Kamio), Rumiko (Maika Yamamoto), Rie (Mayu Yokota), and Shota (Kotaro Daigo), a group of students, set out to find the various scattered pieces of Haruka's corpse buried in the school,...

Film Review: Tokyo Playboy Club (2011) by Yosuke Okuda
Image
Films about the sex clubs in Tokyo and the “underworld” that usually surrounds them come out pretty frequently from the Japanese movie industry. Yosuke Okuda tries to make a difference in the genre by introducing some additional elements while stripping his movie completely from sex and nudity, in a effort, though, that ends up particularly faulty.

As the movie begins, a failing student who tries to study English attacks a construction crew due to the noise they make. When he grabs a hammer all the workers are completely scared, with the exception of Katsutoshi, who ends up killing the young man. A bit later, he finds refuge in the sex club of an old acquaintance, Seikichi, while gradually revealing himself as a genuine ‘mad dog” despite his appearance suggesting otherwise. The club, however, has its own story arc, revolving around Takahiro,...
