Italy’s Fandango Sales has taken world distribution on “Damned if You Do, Damned if You Don’t,” the new sophisticated comedy by Gianni Di Gregorio whose hit “Mid-August Lunch” recently got an English-language remake.

Fandango is launching sales on the film, which is now in post, at the EFM in Berlin.

“Damned if You Do, Damned if You Don’t,” which is a working title, is the eclectic director’s sixth feature. The film turns on a retired professor in his 70s who is leading a serene life in a nice house, with a decent pension, friends to joke around with, and a lady with whom he spends some time. But then his life gets “turned upside down by the arrival of his daughter, in a marital crisis, and her two unwieldy grandchildren,” says the provided synopsis. This arrival prompts “New worries, new anxieties, but also new affections,” it adds.

Italian state broadcaster Rai’s new world sales arm is gaining traction in Cannes — following its soft launch in Berlin — with four new titles on its slate, including veteran auteur Roberto Andò’s historical drama “The Blunder” starring Toni Servillo (“The Great Beauty”).

In “The Blunder,” which is currently shooting in Sicily, Servillo plays a Sicilian colonel at the head of a ragtag unit trying to outsmart the enemy during the 1860 battle led by Giuseppe Garibaldi that resulted in the unification of Italy.

“The Blunder,” which also stars popular Sicilian comic duo Salvatore Ficarra and Valentino Picone, is produced by Tramp Limited and Bibi Film with Rai Cinema and Medusa, in collaboration with Netflix.

The festival takes place June 7-18 and showcases 12 short film programs of diverse and creative storytelling. Ranging from short narrative, documentary, and animated films, as well as music videos, the 2023 shorts lineup includes 76 total selections, with 62 shorts in competition, eight music videos, and six special screening shorts, from 91 filmmakers across 25 countries. There will also be 48 world premieres, three international premieres, two North American premieres, one U.S. premiere, and 22 New York premieres.

The lineup’s four categories — narrative shorts, documentary shorts, animated shorts, and music videos — are curated across 12 thematic programs highlighting love, family relationships, LGBTQ+ stories, “Expressions of Black Freedom,” Latin America, resilience, and more.

Italian director Ferzan Ozpetek has started shooting the romantic drama Nuovo Olimpo in Rome today for Netflix. Damiano Gavino and Andrea Di Luigi star with Luisa Ranieri, Greta Scarano, Aurora Giovinazzo, Alvise Rigo, and Giancarlo Commare.

Ozeptek has written the script with regularr collaborator Gianni Romoli who is also producing the film with Tilde Corsi for R&c Productions and Faros Film.

Prolific Turkish-Italian director Ferzan Ozpetek has started shooting “Nuovo Olimpo,” a Rome-set gay romance that marks his first collaboration with Netflix.

Ozpetek’s first Netflix Italian original film is the fourteenth feature from the popular helmer known for commercially successful pics such as “Ignorant Fairies” and “Loose Cannons.” He was celebrated during an AmfAR gala at the Venice Film Festival in September in recognition for how his movies bring to the fore characters within the LGBTQ community. Ozpetek’s works are also consistently among Italy’s most widely exported movies despite the fact they don’t always go to festivals.

Set in the late 1970s “Nuovo Olimpo” is about two 25-year-old men who meet by chance, fall madly in love, and are then separated due to an unexpected event. For the next thirty years they pursue the hope of finding each other again.

Oscar winner Roberto Benigni is attached to Paramount+ original Francesco Il Cantico, as the global streamer prepares to launch in Italy tomorrow with more than 8,000 hours of content.

Benigni will front the show, which is billed as “an immersive reading of one of the most iconic texts dedicated to love.” Its announcement came at a star-studded blue carpet event at the iconic Cinecittà Studios in Rome this evening, with Paramount+ still gathering pace following launches in countries such as the UK and South Korea.

Paramount+, the streaming service from Paramount Global, launches in Italy on Thursday with more than 8,000 hours of entertainment and a slate of local originals shining a spotlight on women’s voices and stories.

Among them are the previously unveiled original series Miss Fallaci, set to premiere in 2023, which will detail “the true story of one of the most controversial Italian and international journalism icons ever,” Oriana Fallaci, as well as the previously announced Corpo Libero, a teen drama-thriller series set in the world of gymnastics that is based on a novel by Ilaria Bernardini.

John Turturro and the producers of “The Name of the Rose” unveiled their ambitious English-language TV adaptation of Umberto Eco’s murder mystery in Rome on Thursday ahead of its global rollout, which will kick off March 4 on Italy’s Rai.

Producers and the Italian pubcaster have high hopes the show will expand the international footprint of Italy’s high-end dramas following “My Brilliant Friend,” based on a more recent bestseller. The $30 million, eight-episode series is produced by Rome-based companies 11 Marzo and Palomar and Rai Fiction, and will go out in the U.S. via AMC on May 1.

John Turturro, who plays the central character of Franciscan monk William of Baskerville, said that Eco’s novel, which has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide since first being published in 1980, was very relevant today.

“There is a power structure – the church – which also represents the government or politics,” he said. “Then there is suppression of women.

Italy’s Mediaset and Indigo Film on Tuesday unveiled a glossy Italian adaptation of Scotland-set rape drama “Liar,” titled “Non Mentire,” which marks the first redo of the hit show from ITV and Sundance TV.

All3Media International will kick off global sales on “Non Mentire” at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin. Buyers will see footage of the show during a Drama Series Days panel titled “A Different Take,” showcasing the British company’s recent move into non-English language dramas.

“Non Mentire,” which means “Don’t Lie” in Italian, is directed by Gianluca Tavarelli (“The Young Montalbano”), shot in Turin, and toplines Greta Scarano (“The Name of the Rose”) in the role of a teacher who goes on a date with a surgeon, which prompts an accusation of rape. Tele München Group’s world sales unit, Tm International, has sold its high-end television series “The Name of the Rose,” starring John Turturro, to multiple territories, including the BBC in the U.K., Sky in Germany and Ocs in France.

Additionally it has been acquired by Yle in Finland, Nrk in Norway, Dr in Denmark, Sbs in Australia, Vrt in Belgium, Rtp in Portugal, Ceska TV in Czech Republic, Sky in New Zealand, and Iti in Poland. As previously announced, AMC’s SundanceTV holds the rights for the U.S. and Canada, and Rai will air the show in Italy.

“Liar,” the Scotland-set rape drama from ITV and Sundance TV, is getting an Italian adaptation produced by Indigo Film, the shingle behind Paolo Sorrentino’s Oscar-winner “The Great Beauty.”

The Italian “Liar” redo has been commissioned by Mediaset, Italy’s top private broadcaster – controlled by former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi – as part of the company’s ongoing effort to ramp up scripted content production and improve its quality after several of their local dramas flopped.

Shooting started in Turin this month on the Italian version of “Liar” which is being directed by Gianluca Tavarelli (“The Young Montalbano”) and marks the first adaptation of the British show that in 2017 was ITV’s highest-rated new drama.

The full jury line-ups for the 2017 Venice Film Festival (August 30-September 9) have been announced.

Baby Driver director Edgar Wright, actress Rebecca Hall and Hungarian director Ildiko Enyedi, who won a Berlin Golden Bear this year for On Body and Soul have joined the main competition jury presided over by Annette Bening.

They are joined by Mexican director Michel Franco, French actress Anna Mouglalis, Australian film critic David Stratton, Italian actress Jasmine Trinca and Hong Kong director, producer and screenwriter Yonfan.

Director John Landis will head the international jury for a new Venice Virtual Reality (Vr) section. The other Jury members are French screenwriter and director Celine Sciamma and actor/director Ricky Tognazzi.

The Vr jury will award prizes for best Vr film, grand Vr jury prize and best Vr creativity award. A restored version of Landis’ Into the Night will also be screened at Venice this year.

★★☆☆☆Screening in the Orizzonti sidebar of the Venice Film Festival, Michele Alhaique's gangland romance Senza Nessuna Pietà (2014) is a slickly made yet brutally clichéd piece of implausible and ultimately inconsequential nonsense. Mimmo (Pierfrancesco Favino) is a construction worker who sidelines for his criminal uncle collecting debts and roughing people up. A burly giant of a man, he really has a gentle heart and is pained by the violence he must perpetrate, especially at the behest of Manuel (Adriano Giannini), his sadistic conniving cousin, an epically unattractive squirt of sleaze. Things come to a head when he's tasked with ferrying a young prostitute, Tania (Greta Scarano), to and from a tryst with Manuel.

In the final batch of items we finally get the confirmation that 2014′s Palme d’Or Winner Winter Sleep (which gets added along with a trio of others to the Masters Programme) will show, and Tomm Moore’s highly anticipated Song of the Sea (among the four item line-up for Tiff Kids) also lands. Worth mentioning are the sprinkling of add-ons to the various other sections (Marjane Satrapi’s Sundance preemed The Voices, Matt Shakman’s Cut Bank and the world preem of Danis Tanovic’s Tigers) with a Studio Ghibli docu item being fitted into the Tiff Docs, but it is the Discovery Programme that finally takes shape.
