This Is Who ‘SNL’ Is Looking to Cast for Season 51
Image
It’s after August 1st, which means that the news of who will be in Season 51 of Saturday Night Live could start trickling out any day now. That’s because August 1st is the official deadline for contracts of returning cast to be signed, which means that those who aren’t renewing or being asked back will start announcing their departures from the show. And they, of course, will then need to be replaced with someone new.

There’s been major speculation about who will be staying on the show after the end of the historic 50th season. Is Michael Che leaving? Is Bowen Yang heading to the big screen full time after Wicked? There’s been no clear information on if any of the show’s big hitters are staying or going.

But the absence of official information doesn’t mean there are no leads to follow. According to Late Nighter,...

Bowen Yang & Matt Rogers Pitch Themselves As ‘SNL’s Next ‘Weekend Update’ Hosts: “A New Fresh Take”
Image
After more than a decade, could Saturday Night Live be primed for a new set of ‘Weekend Update‘ hosts?

Cast member Bowen Yang and his Las Culturistas podcast co-host Matt Rogers recently threw their hats in the ring to replace Michael Che and Colin Jost as the parody news segment’s anchors as the NBC sketch comedy show prepares to return for Season 51 on Oct. 4.

“Oh God, trauma!” Rogers prefaced a question for Yang on Hot Ones Versus. “We both auditioned for SNL, but only you were asked to join. If you could have me replace any current SNL cast, who would it be?”

Instead of eating a wing, Yang replied, “If I could have you replace any current cast member … I’m gonna give Che and Colin the chop so that you and I can do ‘Update’ together.”

“I love that, I think we’d be great at ‘Update.

Michael Che Is Sad After Fans Roast His Latte Art
Image
Is Michael Che secretly mocking his Instagram fans or sincerely showing off his new skills as a barista?

The Saturday Night Live Weekend Update anchor (for now) has been using his Instagram Stories in recent days to show off his latte foam-art skills. Previous creations are slightly better than the example below, but his lackluster displays, along with hashtags like #georgeclooney, make the posts a likely exercise in irony.

Instagram @chethinks

That didn’t stop followers from messaging Che with art critiques like:

“my guy did you mistake the cup for your toilet?”“Dude you suck at this”“latte fart”“Bro just shat in it and called it a day”

Maybe Che really was in his feelings when he posted responses like, “so being nasty=funny now..? hmm. didn’t get the memorandum.”

He followed that up with a promise to take his espresso machine and go home. “i received...

SNL sets season 51 premiere date: What it means for the cast and potential hosts
Image
Saturday Night Live has set a return date, announcing the season 51 premiere date. And with it comes speculation on who will host and reports about potential cast changes under Lorne Michaels.

SNL returns to NBC on October 4. It's slightly later than season 50's late September start date, but falls in line with the premiere dates for past seasons. With just over two months until showtime, Lorne Michaels has a few decisions to make regarding the cast.

According to Deadline, Michaels has yet to make any decisions about new cast members. The outlet reports that the first round of applications for new performers came prior to July 4. Sources also tell Deadline that Michaels is focused on hiring "character-driven performers" rather than stand-up comedians.

While that could change based on who submits material or gets called in for an audition, it's a good sign for Saturday Night Live's future. More original...

‘SNL’ Sets Return For Season 51 Premiere
Image
After a pretty momentous season celebrating its 50th anniversary, Saturday Night Live has set its return.

The venerable NBC show will premiere its Season 51 on October 4. It’s in line with recent premiere dates, with Season 50 returning on September 28, Season 49 premiering on October 14 and Season 48 launching on October 1.

NBC did not announce who would host the season premiere.

The process for who will be leaving and who will be staying on the late-night variety show is still in its early stages; creator Lorne Michaels is not expected to make any big decisions for at least the next couple of weeks.

The first round of submissions for new cast took place ahead of the July 4 weekend, but it’s unclear how many slots are available and Michaels usually holidays in Europe over the summer. Sources did tell Deadline this month that he was leaning more toward strong, character-driven performers rather than...

‘SNL’s Cue Card Guy Has An Incredible Instagram Account
Image
Saturday Night Live superfans might already know this, but SNL’s cue-card guy, Wally Feresten, is on Instagram. He’s been doing cue cards at SNL since 1990, and now also manages the cue cards for Late Night with Seth Meyers. Basically, if there are cue-card needs at NBC, Feresten is there. His first episode ever was hosted by Kyle McLachlan with musical guest Sinead O’Connor. But beyond his essential role in getting jokes on air, he also manages a fantastic Instagram account.

Not only does he share shots from behind the scenes at 30 Rock, he also collaborates with Meyers’ guests to do Charli Xcx reels and sharing custom cue cards you can actually order from him. (Find them over at cuecardsbywally.com!) It’s a very wholesome side to the often-cutthroat world of late-night television.

Feresten’s account feels like real inside baseball — not just for Saturday Night Live, but for the entire network.

Colin Jost is Surprisingly Chill About Another Man Kissing His Wife on Red Carpets
Image
Scarlett Johansson has had to suffer through numerous jokes about her marriage to Colin Jost while Jost has been the host of Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update. Any time Jost and Michael Che do a joke swap, Johansson catches a stray. So, it feels just that for the last few red carpets for the global premiere of her new film Jurassic World: Rebirth, she’s been smooching her costar Jonathan Bailey.

The kisses are totally innocent — friendship kisses between friends, really. Bailey is an out gay man who told Entertainment Tonight that kissing a friend hello is one of life’s simple pleasures. “I believe in being able to show love in all different ways,” Bailey explained. “And if you can’t kiss your friends … life’s too short not to.”

Still, it’s kind of fun that Jost is having to answer questions from reporters about another man...

Image
It was announced today that comedian and actor Aaron Berg would be the new co-host of The Sdr Show. The Sdr Show host and GaS Digital Network co-owner Ralph Sutton made the announcement.

Aaron is a permanent fixture in the NYC comedy scene, performing nightly and continuing to set the bar for comedy greatness. His humor transcends the stage and into his personal life, where he thrives as a dedicated father and husband.

“I am beyond excited to take the co-host chair on the Sdr show. My favorite things in life are sex… and to a much lesser extent, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll,” said Berg. “Although I am sober, I really respect people who can handle sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll in perfect harmony. This podcast is now a perfect storm.

Among Aaron’s acting credits include being recently cast in Uwe Boll’s feature film The First Shift,...

Scarlett Johansson Thinks Colin Jost Would Outlive Michael Che in Jurassic World: ‘He’s From Staten Island’ | Video
Image
When it comes to man vs. dinosaurs, Scarlett Johansson is betting on her husband. While on “The Tonight Show,” the “Jurassic World Rebirth” star weighed in on which celebrities she thinks would survive a dino attack and who would become raptor food.

Jimmy Fallon closed out his game with his funniest choice: “Saturday Night Live” Weekend Update hosts Colin Jost or Michael Che.

“I’m only going to say Colin because he’s from Staten Island. He’s a tough guy,” Johansson said, laughing.

Fallon agreed with her, adding, “Colin, you are a tough guy. Good answers.”

The rest of Johansson’s picks were equally well thought out. Chris Hemsworth won over Chris Evans because Evans is from Boston and Hemsworth is from Australia — “In Australia, they have a lot of scary venomous snakes” — the A-lister reasoned. Meanwhile, Adam Driver won over Bill Murray not because of his age, but...

Dana Carvey Finally Leans In To Being ‘SNL’ Alum
Image
Even though Dana Carvey was never part of the same Saturday Night Live cast as Tracy Morgan, anytime the 30 Rock star would bump into the Wayne’s World star, he’d refer to him as “alum”.

It’s a feeling that only 165 other people know.

And Carvey, who was a cast member between 1986 and 1993, is responsible for some of SNL’s most iconic characters including Church Lady, Gareth Algar and Hans.

“We understand the glue and the wig, and the cards as well as the adrenaline rush of it and really being under prepared most of the time,” Carvey told Deadline.

But it wasn’t until the launch of his Fly on the Wall podcast, the SNL oral history show that he hosts with David Spade, that he really realized what being a part of this institution meant.

“It gave us more empathy. Even really successful cast members are a...

SNL star wants to stay as long as they can (and its not Kenan Thompson)
Image
There isn't much to do during the Saturday Night Live offseason other than speculate about cast departures. But one star is getting ahead of the rumor mill, promising that he wants to stick around SNL as long as possible.

SNL's 50th season seemed like a nice round number for certain cast members to call it quits. Colin Jost, Michael Che, Heidi Gardner, Bowen Yang, and more have all heard their names in rumors about who was done with Saturday Night Live when season 50 wrapped in May.

However, nobody has official departed the show. That includes Mikey Day, who recently gave an interviewing suggesting SNL fans don't have to worry about him anytime soon.

“I want to work there for as long as I can,” Day said in an interview with Variety. “I want to work there until it’s sad.”

Day has been with Saturday Night Live since 2013 when he joined as a writer.

Ego Nwodim Teases Leaving ‘Saturday Night Live’
Image
Add Ego Nwodim to the list of cast members like Michael Che and Bowen Yang who are teasing that they might be ready to hang up their Saturday Night Live costumes for good.

“I want to create something that feels like it’s mine,” Nwodim told Gold Derby at a For Your Consideration event. “I want to showcase some of my other talents, now that I’ve done so much on the show and I have so much fun with my castmates and have really gotten to stretch and be challenged in the best of ways.”

Sounds like a resignation letter, but Nwodim played coy about whether or not she was actually out the door. “I love the show, so there’s no telling what happens there or doesn’t,” she continued. “I do know I feel like I’ve built some muscle that I want to flex in other spaces as well,...

"We're Gonna Get Fired": SNL's Ego Nwodim Talks About Her Breakout Miss Eggy Sketch Going Awry
Image
Saturday Night Liveseason 50 star, Ego Dwodim thought she was going to be fired while playing Miss Eggy. The character appears in Weekend Update as Nwodim's stand-up persona, as she claims to be talking about only the food at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. However, Ego's sketch goes to another level as she raises her microphone to the audience, and they curse, leaving Ego and the Update anchors in shock and laughter.

Dwodim describes her surprise when the audience cursed as she held the microphone up to them while doing her bit as Miss Eggy in a new interview with Deadline. Despite that unexpected response from the spectators, Dwodim enjoyed doing her Miss Eggy sketch because she got to have fun with not only the Weekend Update hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che, but also with the audience as she was poking fun at herself and improvising with the audience members.

Andrea Mitchell on Rebuilding Faith in the News Media: ‘Trust Is the Coin of the Realm, and We Have to Be the Gold Standard’
Image
The Peabody Awards will honor veteran NBC News’ Chief Washington and Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Andrea Mitchell with the Career Achievement Award, and the landmark sketch comedy series “Saturday Night Live” with the Institutional Award during a June 1 ceremony in Beverly Hills.

Now in its 85th year, the Peabody Awards recognize the importance of storytelling and of narratives irrespective of genre or platform, whether the show be entertainment, news, a documentary, children’s programing, radio, podcasting or a video game.

Jeffrey P. Jones, executive director of the Peabody Awards, says that Mitchell’s long, distinguished career as a journalist at various capacities covering the White House and international affairs — and the gravity of both of those positions — makes her an obvious choice for the award.

“It’s someone like that who’s had such a career in the public eye, we felt as if it was important to recognize not just that longevity,...

Can The Emmys Ever Fix Its Late-Night Problem?
Image
Late-night television and the Emmys have had a symbiotic, yet complicated, relationship over the years.

Yes, Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Michael Che, Colin Jost and Kenan Thompson have hosted the awards show over the last ten years, but no, the TV Academy doesn’t really know what to do with their shows, according to many people behind-the-scenes in late-night.

Over the last three years, there have been rule changes, category swaps and nomination reductions impacting shows such as The Daily Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Saturday Night Live.

Back in 2022, a group of showrunners, led by Ben Winston, then showrunner of The Late Late Show with James Corden, successfully campaigned the TV Academy to cement a fifth nomination. A year later, Last Week Tonight was moved into a new category – Outstanding Scripted Variety...

Seth Meyers Has Gotten Very Good At Not Saying Who He Thinks Should Succeed Lorne Michaels
Image
Seth Meyers is a person who doesn’t seem to have trouble filling his time. He’s been the host of Late Night With Seth Meyers since early 2014. He co-hosts the podcasts Family Trips With The Meyers Brothers with, as you might guess, his brother Josh, and The Lonely Island With Seth Meyers Podcast with, as you might also guess, The Lonely Island. He’s also partially responsible for the care of his three children and an Italian greyhound named Frisbee. Yet a segment of the population can’t stop fantasy-casting him into the role of Saturday Night Live’s next showrunner.

The question of who would succeed creator Lorne Michaels in running SNL has long been a topic of idle speculation. But this year’s celebration of the show’s 50th season has cranked it up several notches, since Michaels himself told Gayle King, back in 2021, that if he...

Kenan Thompson Teases ‘SNL’ Cast Shakeup: ‘Possibly a Lot of Change Next Year’
Image
“Saturday Night Live”‘s longest-running cast member Kenan Thompson hinted that the Season 50 finale felt like an end of an era, and could portend some significant exits ahead of Season 51.

The sketch comedy series celebrated a milestone of 50 seasons of iconic characters, sketches and more since it first aired in 1975. But the “SNL” veteran said it felt especially “bittersweet.”

“Especially this year where it feels like there’s maybe, possibly, a lot of change next year,” he told Page Six Saturday.

The comedy show typically makes decisions on its new and returning cast members in the summer before the series returns to its late night slot in the fall. So far, no cast departure announcements have been made.

“You want everyone to stay forever, knowing that people may be making decisions this summer…it’s always like you want your kids to stay young,” the “All That” alum explained.

During the Season 50 finale,...

"A Lot Of Change Next Year": Keenan Thompson Hints At Multiple Exits Ahead Of Saturday Night Live Season 51
Image
After the sketch comedy's milestone 50th season, Saturday Night Live veteran Kenan Thompson teases major changes ahead. The iconic NBC series recently wrapped a big celebration, putting a bow on its 50th installment. But more so than in other recent years, there have been questions over which cast members might not be back for Saturday Night Live season 51. It's a question that has received a bit of attention on SNL itself, often through quick jokes by the performers.

Speaking to Page Sixat the Reel Works 24th Changemakers Gala, Thompson shared that SNL season 51 will see a lot of changes and revealed that he hasn't negotiated a new contract yet, though he hopes to return. Thompson, who joined the sketch comedy back in 2003, making him the show's longest-tenured cast member, talks in the quote below about the feeling of wishing everyone could stay:

Kenan Thompson Teases “A Lot of Change” at ‘SNL’ Next Season
Image
Kenan Thompson is hinting that there’s going to be “a lot of change” next season at Saturday Night Live regarding casting.

While recently speaking with Page Six, the comedian and longtime SNL castmember called the historic 50th season ending, which concluded with host Scarlett Johansson’s episode on May 17, “bittersweet.”

“Especially this year where it feels like there’s maybe, possibly, a lot of change next year,” Thompson continued, adding, “You want everyone to stay forever, knowing that people may be making decisions this summer…it’s always like you want your kids to stay young.”

While nothing has been publicly confirmed regarding SNL casting for season 51, rumors have been swirling online of a cast shake-up. As for Thompson, who has been with the NBC sketch comedy show since season 29 in 2003, he shared that he has yet to sign a contract for the upcoming season.

Kenan Thompson Hints At Possible ‘SNL’ Cast Shakeup: “A Lot Of Change Next Year”
Image
Amid swirling rumors of a cast shakeup following Saturday Night Live‘s wrapping of its historic 50th season last week, Kenan Thompson is hinting at a potential cast shakeup heading into the fall.

Speaking to Page Six recently, the comic and longest-tenured SNL member called the ending of Season 50, which included a flurry of anniversary activities and a lengthy Sunday special, “bittersweet.”

“Especially this year where it feels like there’s maybe, possibly, a lot of change next year,” he said, adding, “You want everyone to stay forever, knowing that people may be making decisions this summer … it’s always like you want your kids to stay young.”

With 22 seasons under his belt, Thompson also revealed that he has yet to sign a contract for his 23rd, though he remains optimistic, he said.

Jerrod Carmichael Loved Going to Uncomfortable Places for ‘Don’t Be Gay’
Image
A lot has changed for Jerrod Carmichael since his last HBO standup special, “Rothaniel” in 2022, where he revealed his unusual first name and the fact that he is gay. Since then, he hosted the Golden Globes, where he joked he was only chosen because he was Black, and launched and starred in his own HBO reality series.

Now he’s back with his third comedy special, in which he riffs on breaking the one rule his family had growing up: “Don’t Be Gay,” as well as obsessing over D’Angelo’s life-changing 2000 music video for “How Does It Feel.”

Ahead of the May 24 debut of “Don’t Be Gay,” Carmichael chatted with TheWrap about going to uncomfortable places with his comedy and how his boyfriend reacted to jokes about their relationship.

TheWrap: How did your approach to this special differ from your previous ones?

Carmichael: I worked on it for at least a year.

The ‘SNL’ Cast Member in the Most Sketches This Season Will Surprise You
Image
Does Lorne Michaels have a comedian hierarchy at Saturday Night Live?

Some weeks, it sure feels that way. Bowen Yang appears to have grabbed the belt as the show’s resident star of the moment. Sarah Sherman gets a huge spotlight. Kenan Thompson is the old reliable, James Austin Johnson is guaranteed his Trump sketch week after week, and Michaels seems to have anointed Marcello Hernández as the show’s Next Big Thing.

So, which one of those cast members appeared in the most sketches in SNL’s 50th season? The answer: None of the above. The comedian who actually appeared in the most sketches was… Andrew Dismukes?

Play

You heard me. Dismukes was your leader in the clubhouse with 79 sketches, according to Saturday Night Network, as reported by LateNighter. The runner-up was another cast member not listed above, Heidi Gardner, who appeared in 77 sketches.

That’s a big step up for Dismukes,...

‘SNL’ star Ego Nwodim clears up those FCC fine rumors and shares her 50th reunion regret
Image
To the best of Ego Nwodim's knowledge, Saturday Night Live was not fined by the Federal Communications Commission when the audience shouted a curse word during her April 5 debut as Miss Eggy, her new stand-up comedian persona.

"I don't believe we got fined," she tells Gold Derby. "I asked Lorne [Michaels, the creator and showrunner] a couple of weeks ago and I was like, 'Did anything happen? Did we get fined?' And he was like, 'I don't think so.' And so, because he was semi-confident, I, too, am semi-confident that we didn't get fined." She smiles, "The money didn't come out of my bank account, so that's why I haven't confirmed."

The controversy started when Nwodim as Miss Eggy pointed the microphone at the audience and asked "Cause these men ain't what?" and people shouted back "Sh-t!" The audio was later cut, but viewers can still watch...

Bowen Yang Doesn’t Exactly Deny Rumors That He’s Leaving ‘SNL’
Image
While early speculation about who might be leaving Saturday Night Live focused on Michael Che and Colin Jost, attention quickly turned to another longtime cast member after Scarlett Johansson said goodnight last week. As the camera focused on different SNL comics hugging and high-fiving, it couldn’t help but linger on a teary-faced Bowen Yang holding onto Sarah Sherman for dear life. Were those the sobs of a comedian saying goodbye?

Yang won’t confirm or deny, explaining his emotions without really explaining anything. “I think you get to a point at SNL where you understand that you’re on the downswing of things,” Yang told Entertainment Weekly, at least hinting that the end is coming if not already here. “I think I was just processing that being one of the last ‘last nights’ that I would have, and that is a huge thing.”

Then again, as Yang says, all...

Cursing, ‘farts,’ and monkey kisses: ‘SNL’ unleashes the best bloopers from Season 50
Image
Saturday Night Live's milestone 50th season ended last week, but the laughs are still coming ... in the form of bloopers

NBC has released a full three minutes of hilarious oopsie-daisies and cast members breaking from the 2024-25 season of SNL. The collection includes moments from live shows, pretaped videos, dress rehearsals, and stage promos.

The video opens with Ego Nwodim as her "Miss Eggy" stand-up comedian persona reacting in shock when the audience shouts "Sh-t!" after she asks, "Cause these men ain't what?" The audio was later cut to avoid an FCC fine, but viewers can still watch Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che cracking up in the background. "Lorne gonna be mad at y'all," Nwodim said in reference to showrunner Lorne Michaels.

More gut-busting SNL Season 50 bloopers include the following:

‘Saturday Night Live’ Fans Have New Cast Quitting Theories After Colin Jost Rumors Fizzle
Image
Lorne Michaels may not have to find a new anchor for Weekend Update, but will he need a new iceberg for the Titanic?

Contrary to what many Saturday Night Live fans expected, this past Saturday, the Season 50 finale didn’t feature Colin Jost tendering a tearful resignation after 20 years of service as both a writer and performer on the series. With his wife and perennial SNL host Scarlett Johansson on set, Jost and his long-time creative partner Michael Che performed yet another brutal joke swap segment as they shamefully snickered their way into the off-season with no mention of the wave of “Colin Jost is retiring” tweets, articles and Instagram Stories that preceded the night’s show.

Of course, the fact that Jost didn’t derail the historic SNL finale with an on-air resignation doesn’t mean that the Weekend Update great can’t just quietly pack his things during the summer break.

20 Weekend Updates Jokes From ‘SNL’ Season 50 When Michael Che Went Scorched Earth

5 Moments From ‘SNL’ Season 50 Finale That Stole the Show
Image
You’d think SNL’s 50th season finale would go out like a confetti cannon at a New Year’s party, chaotic, loud, and unforgettable. Instead, it actually felt like someone forgot to light the fuse. Not bad, just safe. Scarlett Johansson stepped in as host, bringing her usual cool-girl energy and solid comic timing, but the sketches gave her more “supporting cast” than “finale queen” energy. Still, history was made; she officially beat out Tina Fey and Drew Barrymore as the most frequent female host.

Sure, we didn’t get a mind-blowing cold open or a viral skit to break the internet instantly, but there were gems. Bad Bunny showing up as a himbo air traffic controller? Iconic. The SNL-style “Piano Man” sendoff? Surprisingly emotional. So while the finale didn’t exactly slay the house down, it still served some sweet, weird, and wonderfully awkward moments that reminded...

Who’s Going to Leave ‘Saturday Night Live,’ From Mostly Likely to No Way
Image
Now that Season 50 of Saturday Night Live is in the books, fans can turn their full attention to the show’s equivalent of a sports off-season. How is Lorne “I’m Not Leaving” Michaels going to build his roster as SNL begins its second half-century? Predicting who might be added to the show is an impossible task, but guessing who could be a roster cut is a betting game anyone can play.

Here are my odds for the likeliest cast members to be looking for work before SNL Season 51…

Devon Walker: -120

It must have been a bittersweet year for the likable Walker, getting promoted to the repertory cast only to find himself consistently receiving less screentime than any other comic, according to the numbers compiled by SNL statmaster Mike Murray. Like Punkie Johnson last season, Walker’s inability to show up in sketches makes his exit seem inevitable.

‘SNL’ Season Finale: Scarlett Johansson Hosts & Gets an Apology from Michael Che
Image
Saturday Night Live’s landmark 50th season ended on Saturday, May 17, with Scarlett Johansson hosting and Bad Bunny performing. And the hosting gig gave Johansson, who’s married to SNL writer and star Colin Jost, a chance to get a “mea culpa” from Michael Che for a certain Nsfw joke he made earlier in the season. Read more about that and other highlights from Saturday’s show below. SNL cold open riffs on Trump’s “personal enrichment” In Saturday’s cold open, James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump discussed his controversial trip to the Middle East. “I did this for the American people and, in many ways, myself, my personal enrichment,” he said. “I did that, too. ‘Saturday Night Live’ Wraps Season 50 With No Cast Goodbyes In Finale As NBC Series Prepares For Departures
Image
There were jokes about cast member Sarah Sherman leaving and Weekend Update‘s Colin Jost replacing Saturday Night Live boss Lorne Michaels, there were long hugs during the curtain call but no real indications of the changes to come during the Season 50 finale of the venerable NBC sketch comedy series.

And changes are likely to come with a 17-member cast that features six veterans who have been on the show for seven or more seasons: Jost, Michael Che, Mikey Day, Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim as well as Kenan Thompson, the longest-tenured SNL cast member in history at 22 years.

Saturday Night Live stopped giving longtime cast members sendoffs in the season finale like the star-studded goodbye Kristen Wiig received in May 2012 after seven years on the show. There were flowers during tonight’s curtain call, but they were from Jost to the finale’s host, his wife Scarlett Johansson.

Of the current longtimers, only Che has said publicly that they would be leaving after this season, but it was during a stand-up performance, and he has also said that in the past. He didn’t give any hints of a pending exit in tonight’s closer.

Several other veteran SNL cast members have alluded in interviews and social media posts that they may leave but there were no signs of that in the finale either, like the way Kate McKinnon got choked up in her final episode.

Related: Weekend Update Joke Swap Sees Michael Che Atone For Scarlett Johansson Joke As Colin Jost Comes For Lorne Michaels’ Throne: “Retire B*tch”

It was largely business as usual. And, surprisingly, it was one of the busiest current cast members from the more recent SNL additions, Sarah Sherman, who was called out by Johansson in her opening monologue.

“It’s been a great season / and Sarah is leaving / we’re all gonna miss you next year,” Johansson sang, to which shocked Sherman responded, “Wait, what? Did you guys hear something? What do you mean leaving?”

It was a joke; Sherman likely was picked because she is not a departure suspect. During the curtain call at the end of the episode, Sherman was one of two cast members Bowen Yang was seen giving lengthy embraces to, along with Nwodim. While he has been an SNL cast member for six seasons, Yang has been on the show for seven, having started as a writer. And he has seen his feature career explode, opening new opportunities for one of SNL‘s MVPs.

The finale also addressed wide spread speculation that Jost is among the top contenders to succeed Michaels at the helm of SNL when he retires. Michaels had suggested that would leave after the show’s milestone 50th anniversary but subsequently walked that back, saying that there was “no immediate plan” for him to step down.

In the latest edition of Weekend Update‘s infamous — and hugely popular — semi-annual Joke Swap between Che and Jost, the latter had to open with this line he was made to read:

“It’s SNL‘s 50th season, so I want to take a moment to say something to our boss, Lorne Michaels. Lorne, retire b*tch! Let me run the show.”

Jost had to revisit the subject at the end of the segment when he was prompted to put on red lipstick before saying another line written for him by Che, “Lorne, I’ll do anything to run this show.”

Later, during the curtain call, Jost’s wife, Johansson, gave Michaels a shoutout, congratulating him on SNL‘s 50-year run. “You are a singular man, we love you and thank you,” she said.

It is unclear when we will get news on departing SNL cast members. Traditionally, veterans who decide to leave make the announcement in the weeks following the season finale. After taking some time off, Michaels gets back to it by July, with decisions who would not be asked back usually made in August-early September.

‘SNL’ Weekend Update: Michael Che Apologizes to Scarlett Johansson for That One Joke
Image
Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update had their traditional joke swap in the season 50 season finale, with co-anchor Michael Che making amends with SNL host Scarlett Johansson for delivering a certain line about her during last December’s joke swap.

“I want to take this opportunity to apologize to someone I hurt. Scarlett, can you come out here?” Che said midway through the joke swap, meaning his words were Colin Jost’s.

After explaining the context– “I made Colin do some tasteless jokes comparing your vagina to Costco roast beef...

Scarlett Johansson Joins Michael Che and Colin Jost for Brutal Weekend Update Joke Swap
Image
The audience went nuts at the beginning of Weekend Update on Saturday, apparently buying into the rumors that Colin Jost and Michael Che would be delivering the fake news for the last time. The segment got off to a slow start — the “Trump in the Middle East” jokes weren’t landing like others in recent weeks.

Ego Nwodim’s Miss Eggy jacked up the energy with a return performance of her hilariously cringe stand-up comedy. But Weekend Update really shook the rafters when Jost and Che engaged in their annual joke swap, making each other read punchlines off the teleprompter that neither had read before the live show. As always, it was brutal. Here are some highlights:

Jost

“It’s SNL’s 50th season, so I want to take a moment to say something to our boss, Lorne Michaels. Lorne, retire, bitch! Let me run this show!”

Weekend Update Joke Swap Sees Michael Che Atone For Scarlett Johansson Joke As Colin Jost Comes For Lorne Michaels’ Throne: “Retire B*tch”
Image
Co-anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che were in for a treat tonight with Saturday Night Live Season 50’s final joke swap, which saw the latter atone for his midseason finale joke at the expense of host Scarlett Johansson and the former coming for creator/executive producer Lorne Michaels’ throne.

The long-held Weekend Update tradition kicked off with a bang, as Che’s first (previously unseen) quip for Jost included a jab at Michaels: “But before we start, it’s SNL‘s 50th season, so I want to take a moment to say something to our boss, Lorne Michaels. Lorne, retire bitch! Let me run the show.”

Per tradition, a majority of Jost’s jokes penned by Che get him to say exceedingly racist things, while Che’s prewritten material paints him as a misogynist and/or pervert.

Jost kicked things off with more jabs at CBS’ Beyond the Gates, the first all-Black daytime soap opera,...

SNL Video: Scarlett Johansson Gets an On-Air Apology From Michael Che for Obscene Jokes
Image
Scarlett Johansson was owed an apology — and she got one.

Johansson, who hosted this week’s Saturday Night Live season finale, dropped by Weekend Update to confront Michael Che about the hilariously obscene jokes he wrote about her for her husband Colin Jost to deliver. (For a reminder, click here.) Well, Jost and Che engaged in another “joke swap” this week, where they write each other jokes to read live on air, sight unseen. And in between jokes, Johansson took a seat beside Che so he could read her a Jost-penned apology to her face.

Michael Che Apologizes to Scarlett Johansson for Infamous Roast Beef Joke: “I Was Jealous”
Image
Michael Che brought Scarlett Johansson out during “Weekend Update” to jokingly apologize for his infamous roast beef joke during the final episode of Saturday Night Live‘s 50th season.

“Before I tell another joke, I wanna take this opportunity to apologize to someone I hurt, Scarlett, can you come out here?” Che said at the top of the bit, with a humorous tone, which took place during yet another joke-swap with his “Weekend Update” co-host and Johansson’s husband Colin Jost. “Y’know, last time we did joke-swap, I made Colin do some tasteless jokes comparing your vagina to Costco roast beef.”

The joke in question saw Johansson’s husband warn of Costco removing “the roast beef sandwich from its menu” during a “Weekend Update” segment last December. “But I ain’t trippin’, I’ve been eating roast beef every night since my wife had the kid,” Jost said in...

Michael Che Gives Humiliating Apology to Scarlett Johansson for Lewd ‘SNL’ Jokes: ‘I Was Just Lashing Out Because I’m Jealous … I’ve Never Seen a Human Vagina’
Image
Scarlett Johansson is finally firing back at Michael Che for all those “Weekend Update” jokes. Johansson hosted “Saturday Night Live” for the seventh time this weekend with musical guest Bad Bunny.

Che, who co-anchors the recurring “Weekend Update” segment of “Saturday Night Live,” writes gags for Colin Jost (Johansson’s husband) to read during “joke swaps” each season — and sometimes they’re at her expense.

“Costco has removed the roast beef sandwich from its menu,” Jost said in a “Weekend Update” bit during a December SNL episode. “But I ain’t trippin’. I’ve been eating roast beef every night since my wife had the kid.”

Che and Jost opened the season finale “Weekend Update” segment by acknowledging the long-standing tradition of swapping jokes, and calling Johansson out to join them at the “Update” desk so Che could formally apologize for “comparing your vagina to Costco roast beef.”

Twitter Seems to Think Sarah Sherman Is Really Leaving ‘SNL’
Image
Scarlett Johansson combined two tried-and-true SNL monologue traditions Saturday night, performing a song (a laugh-starved parody of Billy Joel’s “Piano Man”) and taking questions from the audience.

The song did have one interesting curveball when Johansson belted out this lyric:

It’s been a great season

And Sarah is leaving

We’re all going to miss you next year

“Wait, what?” Sherman protested. “Did you guys hear something? What Do You Mean, Leaving?”

The announcement is almost certainly a joke — after her fake cries of protest, Sherman flashed a big goofy grin and joined back in for the sing-along. But SNL fans on Twitter weren’t so sure it was a gag.

Why even make the joke? It’s likely Johansson’s wink to all of the online rumors about other cast members on the way out, most prominently her husband, Colin Jost, and his Weekend Update co-anchor, Michael Che.

‘Saturday Night Live’: Scarlett Johansson claims Sarah Sherman is ‘leaving,’ Mike Myers meets ‘Kanye,’ and more best moments

As Saturday Night Live closes out its 50th season, who better to host the finale than Scarlett Johansson? The two-time Oscar nominee (Marriage Story and JoJo Rabbit) is no stranger to Studio 8H: in addition to hosting six previous times, she's also married to Weekend Update host Colin Jost, making it easier for her to pop up for some surprise cameos here and there.

This year on the film circuit, Johansson is reuniting with Asteroid City director Wes Anderson for The Phoenician Scheme, and she's also starring in the upcoming Jurassic World: Rebirth. Here are the best moments from Johansson's latest SNL hosting gig, from the opening monologue to the best sketches.

Black Widow Won’t Return for Avengers: Doomsday, Says Scarlett Johansson
Image
Scarlett Johansson confirms she’s stepping away from the MCU, citing narrative closure for Natasha Romanoff and past tensions with Disney—here’s everything we know, from Endgame to her explosive Vanity Fair profile.

Natasha’s Sacrifice in Endgame: A Hero’s Farewell

Black Widow’s death in Avengers: Endgame (2019) remains one of the MCU’s most gut-wrenching moments—a sacrifice still debated by fans on Reddit. Natasha and Clint Barton travel to Vormir to retrieve the Soul Stone, learning it requires a soul to be sacrificed—”a soul for a soul,” as Red Skull ominously puts it.

“I miss my buddies and really would love to be with them forever, but what works about the character is that her story is complete.”

Johansson’s Natasha, determined to save the universe and her “chosen family,” makes the ultimate sacrifice, plummeting to her death so Hawkeye can return to his kids.

This Week, Scarlett Johansson Will Retaliate Against ‘SNL’s Infamous Joke About Her
Image
Saturday Night Liveisn't known for being the kindest to people with its many (and sometimes controversial) roasts. That includes their Weekend Updates' anchors and their partners. Colin Jost and Michael Che have been at the Update Desk for quite some time and the two have a tradition during the holidays of doing a "joke swap" where they each write jokes for each other, and they don't know what the other respective party has planned. In 2024, Che's joke for Jost included a knock at his wife, Scarlett Johansson, who happened to be there. Now, Johansson is ready to get her revenge.

In a new cover story with Vanity Fair, Johansson spoke about hosting Saturday Night Live for its Season 50 closing episode and made it clear that she wasn't going to allow Che to get out of the episode without her taking a swing at him. Johansson brought up being there for...

‘SNL’ Season 51 Cast: Big Names Rumored to Exit the Show After This Season’s Finale
Image
It has been 50 years of SNL entertaining viewers, filled with live sketches, celebrity jokes, and famous cold opens. Now that Saturday Night Live is heading into its 51st season, it might be that time again when they go through some massive shake-ups. The 50th anniversary was a big deal, and it was filled with jokes, laughs, and celebrations. And now, with the spotlight fading from the celebrations, the big question looms: who is sticking around and who is set to leave?

Rumors are swirling around 30 Rock that a few big names could be stepping away. Honestly, it won’t be the first time SNL has hit the reset button on its crew. We have gone from the golden days of Dan Aykroyd and Gilda Radner to today’s stars like Bowen Yang and Michael Che. The cast has always been rotating and scouting new talent. But the idea of losing...

You've Been Warned, Michael Che: Scarlett Johansson Says ‘SNL’ ‘Retaliation Should Be Expected’
Image
It wasn’t enough that Michael Che makes Scarlett Johansson part of the ridicule when he and Colin Jost do their popular joke swaps, writing crude punchlines that their partner has to read off a teleprompter. This past Christmas, Saturday Night Live made Johansson stand there on live television while her husband spoke some Che-scripted vulgarity.

As soon as a picture of Johansson, captioned “40th Birthday,” appeared over Jost’s shoulder, he knew he was in trouble. “I want to dedicate this next joke to my boo, Scarlett Johansson,” he read off the teleprompter as the camera cut to the actress in the wings. He noted that she looked “genuinely worried.”

“Hey, boo. You all know Scarlett just celebrated her 40th birthday, which means I’m about to get up out of there,” Jost said. “Shizz!”

A laughing Johansson threw her hands up, mouthing “Why?” as in “Why do you...

Michael Che Crosses His Fingers Over Colin Jost’s Rumored ‘SNL’ Exit
Image
Speculation that one of the most beloved Saturday Night Live cast members may leave after the conclusion of Season 50 has intensified after his long-time creative partner posted a series of Instagram Stories that are more incendiary than the average “Weekend Update” joke swap.

This weekend, movie giant and Jurassic World Rebirth star Scarlett Johansson will host Saturday Night Live with musical guest Bad Bunny in an A-list lineup befitting the finale of the show’s historic 50th season. In a vacuum, one of the biggest film actors alive headlining the final SNL episode of the season alongside arguably the most popular musician in the world would be about as notable and panic-inducing as Pete Davidson's new girlfriend turning out to be an ultra-famous super model, but seeing Johansson’s name on the final Post-It Notes of the season has had the SNL fandom in uproar over what they fear...
