Screen Life Film ‘The Amityville Exorcist’ Needs More Pazuzu [The Amityville IP]
Image
For more than two years, Joe Lipsett has dissected Amityville Horror films to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”

There’s been a significant amount of backtracking in order to cross T’s and dot I’s for this editorial series. Sometimes an Amityville film drops without notification. Or it is announced and then takes years to debut. Some, such as Amityville Shark House, have never gotten a release.

Finally, there are films like The Amityville Exorcist (2022), which are just difficult to track down without venturing into sketchy corners of the Internet.

The second Amityville film from writer/director/actor Tony Newton harkens back to his first: Amityville Hex (2021). Both films are screen life films that mostly involve actors delivering their dialogue in direct address to the camera via Zoom or Skype, with very little interaction between the cast. It’s a distinctly low budget approach,...

HorRHIFFic 2025: ‘Torture Day’ Review
Image
Stars: Annabella Rich, Nikki Marshall, Ross Doney, Cy Henty, Terrence Betts, Brent Hunter, Rae Michaelson, Les Brewster, Wayne Thompson, Dawn Daroczy, Holly McGregor-Ogden | Written and Directed by S N Sibley

Sam Mason Bell produces and worked as a cinematographer on the film, from low-budget filmmaker S N Sibley, but this is a far cry from his film A Final Exorcism. This is more down and dirty Guerilla filmmaking – that looks like it was shot with a digital camera or even iPhone, with in-camera sound that rattles your ears at times.

I’m assuming the low-budget nature of the film is the reason for the largely silent scene-setting opening, which blares out its ominous soundtrack over scenes of our killer, Lewis, walking the streets, taking a victim in a brutal bottle to the stomach (played by Annabelle Rich who looks to be vying for 2025 British scream queen of the year at this rate!

HorRHIFFic 2025: ‘A Final Exorcism’ Review
Image
Stars: Suki Jones, Keeley-Jo Jupp, Cy Henty, Simon Berry, Ayvianna Snow, Charlie Bentley, Patrick Olliver, Ella Palmer | Written and Directed by Sam Mason-Bell

Elderly Anne Lewis, believing herself possessed, requests an exorcism, with her two children by her side. On the third night of the ritual, Father Stone, the priest performing the rites, begins to doubt the family’s intentions. Is Anne truly possessed, or are her children deceiving him?

There’s very little you can do when it comes to pushing the proverbial filmic envelope with exorcism movies. Everything that can be done seemingly has been done. So what to do if you do want to make another entry into the sometimes-maligned genre?

Well in the case of A Final Exorcism you know that people have seen every trope, every cliche and know every stereotype but you lean into that, jumping straight into the titular exorcism, adding in a...

‘Devil May Care’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Anaïs Marden, Annabella Rich, Nicole Katherine Riddell, Eliot Gibson, Aidan Harris, Jack Perry, James Hamer-Morton, Chris Mills | Written by Chuck Wagner | Directed by Sam Mason-Bell

Devil May Care is the latest film from Sam Mason-Bell. He’s a very busy man, with seventy-six credits as a director, eighty as a producer and then there are the ones as writer, cinematographer, etc. all since 2008. One wonders when he manages to sleep.

His latest attempt to keep everyone else from sleeping takes place in the woods outside of a sleepy English town. Three girls, Elaine (Anaïs Marden; For the Love of Eve), Missy and Pam hook up with three guys, Tom, Brad and Mac (Jack Perry). Their plans involve hiking out to the abandoned, and of course haunted, theatre out in the woods to drink, have sex and do anything else that might get them killed.

Like most of Mason-Bell’s films,...

Image
In his latest interview from this year’s Romford Horror Film Festival, Kevin sits down with eleven(!) members of the cast and crew of the new British horror anthology Video Shop Tales of Terror.

Six terrifying tales emanate from a sinister video shop in this British retro anthology movie and loving tribute to the 1980s VHS era. Every tale is handled by a respected indie horror director: Mj Dixon (Pandamonium), Sam Mason-Bell (Acting), Ciao Handy (Tales from the Great War), Alexander Churchyard (I Scream on the Beach!), Tom Lee Rutter (Day of the Stranger) and Michael Fausti (Exit). With faux trailers from Geoff Harmer (Dead Air) & Tony Mardon (The Witches of the Sands). Immerse yourself in two hours of retro horror nostalgia, from a bunch of people who love the era as much as you do! Image
Stars: Dani Thompson, Laurence Harvey, Annabella Rich, Martin W Payne, Tony Mardon, Singh Lall, Rami Hilmi, Cy Henty, Andrea Sandell, Eve Oliver, Peter Tilley, Faith Elizabeth, Charlie Bond, Mike Butler, Allan Bryce | Directed by Alexander Churchyard, Mj Dixon, Sam Mason Bell, Tony Mardon, Max Davenport, Tom Lee Rutter, Michael Fausti, Andrew Elias, Geoff Harmer

An anthology of tales paying the ultimate homage to the 70/80s Video Nasty Tromaesque-era, from a team of some of the best writers/directors in the lower budget UK horror scene. A carefully curated selection of shorts all with varying degrees of depravity broken up by a wrap around story of the Video Dungeon, all delightfully introduced by Brit Scream Queen royalty Dani Thompson (putting in a number of roles throughout). Anthology movies do seem to be making somewhat of a comeback as of late and have a bit of a tendency of “trying too hard...
