How ‘The Gilded Age’ Finds Just Enough Space to Run a Man Over with a Carriage
Image
[Editor’s Note: This article contains spoilers through Episode 8 of Season 3 of “The Gilded Age”]

We’ve come a long way on “The Gilded Age” from the marquee moment of drama being Agnes (Christine Baranski) crossing from one side of the street to the other. Season 3 of the HBO series has traveled from Arizona to across the Atlantic, with of course plenty of time spent in our favorite old (and new) homes in New York. That presents a new kind of challenge for production designer Bob Shaw and his team, now that they’ve mastered the miles of marbling and ostentatious opera house decorations of Seasons 1 and 2.

The Russell Mansion and the show’s New York backlot live on Long Island — it feels appropriate that, by contrast, the Van Rhijn house is in Queens. And of course, the “The Gilded Age” production design and locations team is still getting through their wishlist of period-appropriate homes and mansions around the East Coast. But...

‘The Gilded Age’ Director Unpacks Bertha’s Visit, Women’s Suffrage and That Shocking Death
Image
[This story contains spoilers from season three, episode six of The Gilded Age.]

It’s hard to believe The Gilded Age is winding down. The latest episode “If You Want to Cook an Omelette” is number six of just eight, yet the drama is not de-escalating — only revving up, especially with the just-in news of a season four renewal.

In the latest episode, Bertha (Carrie Coon) traveled to England to “fix” things for Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) who expressed her unhappiness to her father George (Morgan Spector) who, of course, let his wife have it. Intriguingly, her visit made a huge impact not just on Gladys, but perhaps on how fans view her actions. Could Bertha have been right about Gladys marrying the Duke all along?

Just as Gladys and Hector (Ben Lamb) may be finding their groove towards happy matrimony, there appears to be trouble brewing for Marian (Louisa Jacobson) and Bertha, and George’s son Larry (Harry Richardson) who just became engaged,...

‘The Gilded Age’ Renewed For Season 4 By HBO
Image
HBO has handed a Season 4 renewal to Julian Fellowes’ period drama The Gilded Age. The pickup comes ahead of the Season 3 finale on August 10, which will wrap some storylines while setting up more drama and intrigue.

The Gilded Age, which leans into the New York theater community for its strong — and expansive — ensemble cast, has been a true word-of-mouth phenomenon. Launching on HBO’s lower-profile Monday night, it defied the odds and drew a solid viewership to earn a Season 2 renewal. Moving to HBO’s marquee Sunday night, The Gilded Age has been on an upswing since, finding a new gear with its current third season.

Premiere-night viewing has grown for five consecutive weeks, with Episode 5 drawing a new series high of 4 million U.S. cross-platform viewers within its first three days of availability. It was accompanied by a new weekly viewership high on HBO Max. Season-to-season, The Gilded Age...

Why Carrie Coon’s Emmy chances for ‘The White Lotus’ will be helped by ‘The Gilded Age’
Image
Last year, HBO's The Gilded Age made a major breakthrough at the Emmys by scoring six nominations, including Best Drama Series, for its second season. The third season is currently airing and won't be eligible until next year's Emmys. However, its presence could still be helpful for star Carrie Coon as she contends for her supporting role in another prestige HBO drama, The White Lotus.

This marks Coon's third Emmy nomination, after Fargo in 2017 and The Gilded Age in 2024. On the third season of Mike White's anthology series, Coon plays Laurie Duffy, a recently divorced corporate lawyer from New York City, who, along with her two longtime friends (Leslie Bibb and Michelle Monaghan), reunite on a girls' trip to Thailand.

Based on the early predictions for Best Drama Supporting Actress, the third time will be the charm for Coon. And having a juicy, highly visible role in The Gilded Age will only help.

The Gilded Age Season 3 Director Unpacks George & Bertha Russell's Episode 5 Breaking Point: "We're Torturing Our Poor Audience"
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Gilded Age season 3, episode 5, "A Different World."Things have reached a boiling point with the social-climbing Russell family at the center of The Gilded Age, following the marriage of their daughter. The director of season 3, episode 5, "A Different World," has offered some insights into what is next for Bertha (Carrie Coon) and George (Morgan Spector), once the show's unstoppable power couple.

While George's railroads fund the family's opulent lifestyle, he has always trusted Bertha with cementing their place in society. However, this took a dark turn this season when Bertha pushed for her daughter Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) to marry the Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb).Upon arriving in England, Gladys is mistreated and humiliated by her new sister-in-law.

In The Gilded Age season 3, episode 5's ending, Bertha insists she can still fix the situation, but George may be unable to ever forgive her. Episode director...

‘The Gilded Age’ Stars Talk George & Bertha’s Turmoil, Larry & Marian’s Future
Image
[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 3 Episode 5.] It’s all new terrain halfway through The Gilded Age Season 3. In Episode 5, which aired Sunday, July 20, on HBO, Gladys Russell (Taissa Farmiga) was living in England on the estate surrounding the fictional Sidmouth Castle, and being the Duchess of Buckingham won’t be easy with her new husband’s sister, Sara (Hattie Morahan), criticizing her every move. As Gladys struggled with Sara, Hector (Ben Lamb) revealed just how much he’s let his sister run their lives. At home in New York, George Russell (Morgan Spector) was bitter and resentful in Gladys’ absence. This was only compounded by the stresses of work, which prompted him to take drastic action in this installment. Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) hardly had any time to revel in the victory (as she would call it) of her daughter’s nuptials before she started to receive the emotional blowback of...

‘The Gilded Age’: How The HBO Drama Created A Castle Fit For A New Duchess
Image
Gladys deserves the mother of all castles after the ordeal she went through in New York City. But The Gilded Age production didn’t need to go to England to find the perfect home for the new Duchess of Buckingham.

Two different estates in Newport, R.I. — along with one in Long Island — served as Sidmouth Castle in the episode titled “A Different World” that aired Sunday. To achieve the opening shot, however, director Deborah Kampmeier relied on an actual pond in England to project the image of Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) and Hector (Ben Lamb) riding a carriage through the estate grounds.

“We put the visual effect of the carriage in upside down in the water, and then the wide shot of it moving through the countryside. That’s England,” said Kampmeier. “And then as we approach the castle, that is an approach to an estate in Newport. We brought...

‘The Gilded Age’ Courts Record 3.8 Million Viewers With Gladys Wedding Episode
Image
“The Gilded Age” courted a record audience for Season 3’s pivotal wedding episode.

The HBO drama series from Julian Fellowes and Sonja Warfield earned a series high-viewership of 3.8 million in the U.S. with Season 3, Episode 4, which featured the reluctant nuptials of fan-favorite character Gladys Russell (Taissa Farmiga) to Hector Vere, 5th Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb).

This marks the show’s most-watched episode to date after three days, according to internal data. HBO added that Season 3 is currently tracking 20% ahead of last season’s viewership.

As “The Gilded Age” audience grows, the network touted the series having reached its highest-ever weekly viewership on HBO Max, based on weekly viewing accounts. HBO also noted a near-60% increase in social chatter about the show week over week. The episode, titled “Marriage Is a Gamble,” generated approximately 230% more social conversation than Episode 4 of last season.

'The Gilded Age' & 'Downton Abbey' Crossover Talk Ramps Up After Last Night's Episode: Here's What Julian Fellowes Shared
Image
Could The Gilded Age ever cross over with Downton Abbey?

Fans are wondering this after the events of season 3, episode 4 of The Gilded Age, which aired on Sunday (July 13).

If you didn’t see, Gladys Russell (Taissa Farmiga) ended up marrying the Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb), against her own wishes under pressure from her mother Bertha (Carrie Coon).

At the end of the episode, Gladys and the Duke hopped aboard a boat to head to the UK and previews for future episodes this season indicate they’ll be in the UK long term.

Julian Fellowes created both period piece dramas, and was asked if they’ll be crossing paths at all.

Keep reading to find out more…

When asked, he noted that Downton takes place beginning in 1912, while The Gilded Age takes place in the early 1880s, so the age differences in the characters you recognize would be large.

The Gilded Age season 3 episode 4 recap: Here comes the reluctant bride
Image
This post contains spoilers from The Gilded Age season 3 episode 4 from this point forward.

Last week on The Gilded Age season 3, Gladys finally (but begrudgingly) agreed to go along with her mother's plan and marry Hector, the Duke of Buckingham, after successfully meeting him. But even though "the wedding of the century" was all set, that doesn't mean that Gladys still didn't have the opportunity to back out of the big day. That's very much a concern in this week's episode.

Since agreeing to the marriage, Gladys has been holed up in her bedroom as wedding preparations begin downstairs. She refuses to leave her room as some sort of unofficial protest, but in reality, it's more likely that leaving her room and seeing everything happening will make it real. She wants to pretend for a little longer, and that's understandable.

Thankfully, Bertha gives Gladys space while remaining hopeful that everything will go according to plan.

‘The Gilded Age’ Star Taissa Farmiga Unpacks That Life-Altering Decision
Image
[This story contains spoilers from season three, episode four of The Gilded Age.]

Who Gladys Russell will marry has been one of the most compelling storylines for The Gilded Age’s explosive third season. While Gladys very much wants to marry for love, her mother Bertha has pushed her to marry Hector, the Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb), which will in turn make her a Duchess. Because Bertha (Carrie Coon) and her husband George (Morgan Spector), an industrialist, began the series with the disdained tag as “new money” with no social status, Bertha being able to marry her daughter Gladys off to the Duke in a lavish ceremony with all the right people in attendance at the end of episode four’s “Marriage Is a Gamble” is a major coup. Although Bertha has had major societal wins, none of them, however, ensures her position as solidly as this one.

Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy) says this outright to Ward McAllister (Nathan Lane), her long-time confidante,...

Carrie Coon On Merritt Wever’s ‘The Gilded Age’ Debut As Bertha’s Sister: “She’s So Deeply Truthful”
Image
Spoiler Alert: This piece lightly spoils Episode 4 of The Gilded Age Season 3.

The Gilded Age Season 3 reached its halfway point Sunday night with a big episode centered around Gladys’ (Taissa Farmiga) wedding to The Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb), and key in the lead-up to the nuptials is the arrival of Merritt Wever’s character Monica O’Brien.

Monica is Bertha Russell’s (Carrie Coon) sister, but Bertha does not make the fact that she has a sister known, and it’s her son Larry (Harry Richardson) who ultimately invites Monica to Gladys’ wedding, surprising Bertha, and not in a good way.

“I do believe that Bertha comes from a more working-class background than [George], one that she doesn’t like to let on,” Coon told Deadline ahead of the show’s release. “We always joke because Kelly Curran, who played my maid [Turner] in Season 1, has such beautiful hands. We’d...

‘The Gilded Age’ Stars Talk Gladys’ Wedding & Russell Feuds to Come: ‘The Cost Is Great’
Image
[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 3 Episode 4.] The dreaded day arrived. Gladys Russell’s (Taissa Farmiga) wedding to Hector, Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb), was the main event of The Gilded Age Season 3 Episode 4, and it was far from a happy day. Gladys spent the week leading up to the nuptials arranged by ambitious mother Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) in her room in protest of her being forced into the union. Father George Russell (Morgan Spector) was against the match from the start because Gladys wanted to marry for love, but he ended up reluctantly siding with Bertha on the day of the ceremony because jilting her betrothed at the altar (or even just the day of the wedding) would kill Gladys’ reputation forever. His support for the union was for Gladys’ own good, and Gladys eventually agreed it was the only way. Gladys was stuck between a rock and a hard place,...

‘The Gilded Age’s Taissa Farmiga On Gladys’ Fate & Her Emotional State: “I Don’t Think She Has Pleasant Feelings Toward Anybody”

Spoiler Alert! This story contains details from Sunday’s episode of The Gilded Age on HBO.

Bertha, 1, Gladys 0: Mama Russell finally saw her dream come true for her only daughter in the latest episode of the Julian Fellowes drama.

Wedding Bells Chime in 'The Gilded Age' Season 3, Episode 4 Promo
Image
Season 3 of The Gilded Agecontinues to go from strength to strength, with the most recent Episode 3, "Love is Never Easy," perhaps the best of the lot so far. The future of Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) now hangs in the balance, as, following a trip to New York, she and the Duke of Buckingham's (Ben Lamb) plan to marry is finally announced at the unveiling of Sargent's (Bobby Steggert) portrait.

However, this is quickly followed by Gladys uncomfortably fiddling with her pearl necklace and accidentally breaking it, helpfully illustrating her uncertain feelings about the pending nuptials. Nevertheless, as can be seen in the official promo for Episode 4 available to watch below, it seems as if the plans are going ahead as wedding bells are about to chime. However, there's a real sense of unease filtering through, helpfully emphasized by the promo opening with a seance.

"The wedding is nearly upon us.

Image
Taissa Farmiga is explaining the reason why her character, Gladys Russell, decided to say yes to marrying the Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb) in The Gilded Age season three, episode three.

The young heiress had her eyes set on a different suitor, Billy Carlton. However, she was ultimately rejected by him.

Now, Taissa is reflecting on why Gladys gave in to her mother, Bertha (Carrie Coon), who was pushing for the engagement and working hard behind-the-scenes to make it happen.

“I Think Bertha Is Actually Quite Noble”: The Gilded Age’s Carrie Coon Defends Bertha’s Season 3 Marriage Plan For Gladys
Image
Carrie Coon defends Bertha Russell's "noble" intentions to marry her daughter Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) to the Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb) inThe Gilded Age season 3. Known for her single-minded ambition for status in high society, many audience members feel that Bertha crossed a line when she promised her daughter's hand in marriage to the Duke. Carrie Coon, however, sees Bertha's point of view.

Speaking to The Official Gilded Age Podcast with her co-star, Morgan Spector, Carrie Coon eloquently defended Bertha's motivations and her plan to wed Gladys to Hector, Duke of Buckingham. 'The Gilded Age' Season 3, Episode 3 Stills Tease a Lot of Bertha & George Moments Amid Her Duke Scheming
Image
The Gilded Age season three, episode three stills are here!

HBO released a new batch of photos and they’re heavy on the Russell family and the conflict within.

It looks like there are a lot of moments between Bertha (Carrie Coon) and George (Morgan Spector), as well as Gladys (Taissa Farmiga). Noticeably, the Duke (Ben Lamb) is not featured in any stills despite the fact that he’s staying with them and supposedly headed for a possible forced engagement with Gladys.

‘Gilded Age’ Boss Sonja Warfield Shares Why Peggy Deserves a “Soft-Life Era,” Talks Agnes-Ada Clash
Image
[This story contains spoilers from the second episode of The Gilded Age season three.]

Stakes got a lot higher in The Gilded Age’s second episode of season three titled “What the Papers Say,” especially with Gladys (Taissa Farmiga). Bertha’s (Carrie Coon) intentions regarding matters of her daughter’s heart were far more covert in the first episode. Now there’s no question that Bertha intends for her daughter to become the Duchess of Buckingham. Never mind the fact that Gladys and Hector, the Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb) don’t even know each other. For her part, Gladys is confident her dad George (Morgan Spector) will straighten it all out when he returns home. Regardless of the outcome, the tension between George and Bertha is very palpable and that kind of tension doesn’t just disappear.

As Gladys heads toward marriage, preferably one of love, Aurora (Kelli O’Hara) continues to feel the fallout from her husband’s change of heart,...

The Gilded Age season 3 premiere's shocking location change is explained by creator Julian Fellowes. ‘The Gilded Age’ Returned With a Question That Will Steer All of Season 3
Image
[This story contains spoilers form The Gilded Age season three premiere, “Who Is in Charge Here?”]

A year and a half since its season two finale, HBO’s hit drama The Gilded Age returned on Sunday without missing a beat. Picking up right where it left off, episode one appropriately asked, “Who Is in Charge Here?” Until now, the answer had been an easy one for spectacular sisterly duo Agnes van Rhijn and the former Ada Brook, splendidly portrayed by Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon. For much of the series, Agnes, as both the older and wealthier sister, called the shots. That dynamic shifted at the end of last season.

In a ploy to hide his homosexuality, Oscar (Blake Ritson), Agnes’ only child, squandered his mother’s wealth pursuing a marriage with Maud Beaton. Just as the family, which also includes Agnes and Ada’s niece, Marian Brook, was packing up their treasured 61st Street mansion for sale,...

“There Will Be Hurdles”: ‘The Gilded Age’ Producer Dishes on the Complicated Romances of Season 3
Image
The Gilded Ageprovides plenty of drama, ambition, and romance even as it explores the lavish lives of the elite members of New York society in the 1880s. There is much to get into with these high-class individuals as they scheme and plot to gain advantages where applicable. The show is headed towards a third season which is set to premiere this summer and there will be lots of relationships that need sorting out. From the budding romance between Marian (Louisa Jacobson) and Larry (Harry Richardson), the heartwarming dynamic established between Mrs. Bruce (Celia Keenan-Bolger) and Mr. Borden (Douglas Sills), and the beautiful and tragic marriage of Ada (Cynthia Nixon) and Luke Forte (Robert Sean Leonard), romance is certainly going to be on the burner when the series returns for Season 3.

Despite all these other intriguing and complex romances, none quite lit things up in The Gilded Age scene, like George...

‘The Gilded Age’ Finds Its Balance in the Best Season Yet: TV Review
Image
“The Gilded Age” has always been influenced by the work of Edith Wharton. Both the novelist’s oeuvre and the HBO drama are set among the upper echelons of New York society in the late 19th century, documenting frictions both large (the rise of a new industrial elite) and small (imperceptible breaches of etiquette).

But in its first two seasons, “The Gilded Age” heaped all its stakes onto a handful of storylines, most of them anchored by the series’ few characters of color. Creator Julian Fellowes otherwise eschewed the grand, tragic sweep of Wharton’s best-known work: the downfall of Lily Bart in “House of Mirth,” or the thwarted love of Newland Archer and Countess Olenska in “The Age of Innocence.” Instead, the show’s minimal upheaval tends to amount to a slightly rearranged status quo. In Season 2, the blue-blooded Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) lost her fortune and fell...
