While the future of Horizon: An America Saga hangs in the balance, Kevin Costner is looking back at the frustrating journey of bringing his original western saga to the big screen, and he described it as one of the most painful experiences of his entire career. Costner wore many hats for Horizon (as well as his cowboy hat), as the Dances With Wolves star wrote, directed, produced, and starred in the movie, and its unreleased sequel, Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2.

In the foreword for the new book, "The Great Horizon: Photographing Kevin Costner's 'American Saga'" (via IndieWire), Costner reflected on the long and arduous journey of bringing his four-part western saga to life — a journey which is far from over. Costner described Horizon's story, of "the arduous journey of men and women from across America in pursuit of a dream," as one of the greatest narratives ever told.

One major character change to Horizon: An American Saga could have prevented various problems co-writer/director Kevin Costner is now facing with future films in the series. Horizon: An American Saga was released in June 2024, and was meant to be the first entry in a four-movie series. However, reviews for Horizon Chapter 1 were not strong, and the film has a disappointing score of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes. Additionally, it did not perform well at the box office, only earning $38 million on a massive budget of $100 million. Therefore, the future of Costner's Western epic is now uncertain.

The Dark Tower (2017), will be coming to Netflix on Dec. 1. The film version starred Idris Elba as The Last Gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey as the villainous Man In Black. The film is set in an alternative world where western-like gunslingers fight to protect reality and the fall of the Dark Tower to dark forces.

The film did not perform as hoped at the box office, making just $113 million on a $66 million budget. Co-writer of the film Akiva Goldsman felt the reason behind the failure was due to "pieces shifting" and "too many points of view." The movie holds a 16% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 44%.

The first installment of the ambitious series, which tells a story of westward expansion in the 1860s with a sprawling cast and high production values, flopped at the box office this summer, grossing $38.2 million against a $50 million budget. The first film’s financial plans scuttled plans for a theatrical release of Part 2, which is in the can and awaiting release, though no plans have been announced.
