It’s gangsters versus bull sharks in the Australian outback of 1946. A team of professional divers in 1940’s Australia are hired to locate a sunken car in a river, who soon find their efforts are thwarted by a deadly bull shark hunting in the waters. When the divers discover they are working for ruthless criminals trying to recover their stolen gold bullion, the bank robbers prove to be as treacherous as what lurks beneath the surface.

Fear Below is available on Digital Platforms now and comes to DVD on 9 June, courtesy of Signature Entertainment.

Two genre-driven thrillers have surfaced on digital platforms this week, both released by Signature Entertainment. The first is Fear Below, a period-set aquatic survival film blending mid-century crime and nature horror, and the second is It Feeds, a supernatural possession story centred on generational trauma and unseen terror. Though markedly different in tone and style, both films mark distinctive entries in their respective subgenres, offering audiences immediate access to contemporary independent horror.

Fear Below, directed by Matthew Holmes, is set in 1946 and unfolds in the remote waterways of the Australian outback. A group of professional divers, hired under mysterious circumstances to recover a sunken vehicle, quickly learn that their true objective is not salvage work but the retrieval of stolen gold. In the typical shark horror film, unsuspecting swimmers are attacked in oceans by a great white shark, or at least something resembling one. But, in Matthew Holmes’ new film Fear Below, he’s tackling the even more dangerous bull shark as a group of criminals try to rescue their gold from a river. Yes, bull sharks can, in fact, swim in rivers. To celebrate the upcoming release, we have an exclusive clip from the film teasing just how aggressive this shark is.

Signature Entertainment has unveiled the UK trailer for Fear Below, a river-set horror thriller with teeth, set to sink its jaws into digital platforms and DVD from 9 June. Directed by Matthew Holmes (The Legend of Ben Hall) and starring Hermione Corfield (Sea Fever), the period-set chiller blends the sweat and steel of postwar noir with the cold-blooded menace of nature’s most efficient predator.

Upcoming wartime drama The Guns Of Muschu has assembled a cast of Australian talent ahead of a planned shoot in 2025.

Directed by Australia’s Matthew Holmes, the story is set in the jungles of Papua New Guinea during the Second World War and centres on a mission in which eight commandos went in but only one survived.

Epic war-time survival tale “The Guns of Muschu” has already assembled a weighty cast ahead of a production start in the first quarter of 2025.

The film is an adaptation of the non-fiction book “The Guns of Muschu,” written by Don Dennis, with an adapted screenplay by Tom Broadhurst and Jack Brislee (“Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan”). The narrative brings to life a pivotal chapter of Australian war history with gritty authenticity, recounting the high body count Operation Copper, a mission during WWII when Australian and New Zealand troops were sent into the jungles of Papua New Guinea.

The objective of the mission was to investigate the Japanese defenses on Muschu Island, capture a Japanese officer for interrogation and discover the location of two naval guns on the island that were protecting a harbor. Eight commandos were landed as part of the operation, but only one survived.

“I like filmmaking. Mostly amateur stuff…” What Goes Around certainly comes around in this terrific slasher throwback and snuff film extravaganza!

Erin (Catherine Morvell) is a vulnerable and reserved college student. Working in a cafe, she is abused and taken advantage of by the customers. It’s unfair, disgusting, and is just another layer of annoyance present in an already difficult life. Alex (Jesse Bouma) – a customer within the cafe and fellow student – intervenes in one situation, leading to a connection established with Erin. As nice as this may seem, she’s just caught the attraction and attention of a mysterious boy who’s best left avoided.

Miraculously (and dangerously), Erin comes into possession of Alex’s laptop – he accidently leaves it behind in the cafe.

In one of the first buys out of the 2020 Berlin Film Festival, Stephen Johnson’s Australian epic “High Ground” has sold to Samuel Goldwyn Films for stateside distribution. IndieWire has the first trailer for the film, below.

Here’s the official synopsis, courtesy of the Berlinale: “After fighting in the First World War as a sniper, Travis, now a policeman in the vast empty spaces of Northern Australia, loses control of an operation that results in the massacre of an Indigenous tribe. When his superiors insist on burying the truth, Travis leaves in disgust, only to be forced back twelve years later to hunt down Baywara, an Aboriginal warrior whose attacks on new settlers are causing havoc. When Travis, now a bounty hunter, recruits as his tracker the young mission-raised Gutjuk, the only known survivor of the carnage, memories threaten to resurface and turn the white man from hunter into the hunted.

Ahead of its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, Stephen Maxwell Johnson’s “High Ground” has found a U.S. home with Samuel Goldwyn. The film, headlined by Simon Baker, is represented in international markets by pan-European group Playtime and is having a gala screening at the festival.

Set in 1919, “High Ground” tells the story of former WWI sniper Travis, who is now a policeman in the vast and remote landscape of Northern Australia. He loses control of an operation, resulting in the massacre of an indigenous tribe.

While his superiors decide to bury the truth, the experience leaves a scar on Travis’ conscience, but he’s forced to return there 12 years later on a mission to track down an Aboriginal outlaw. Travis soon realizes the young man he’s chasing is the only known survivor of the massacre.
