Try as you might, you can never stop the ticking of the clock. Because of this, it has now somehow been eight years since MCU star Tom Hiddleston got the closest he’ll ever get to playing James Bond in this critically acclaimed spy thriller series. Finally, after waiting almost a decade, the show has now taken a major step forward, with a second season now well into production.
The series is titled The Night Manager, and finds Hiddleston starring as Jonathan Pine, the night manager of a luxury hotel in Cairo and former British soldier. Taking pride in running the prestige hotel, Pine finds himself recruited by Angela Burr, the manager of a Foreign Office task force, and instructed to infiltrate the inner circle of arms dealer Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie). Now, Pine finds himself attempting to not only integrate himself into Roper's inner circle by becoming a felon himself,...

It’s been some eight years since the BBC-amc adaptation of John le Carré’s “The Night Manager” took the world by storm, racking up awards on both sides of the pond. The spy thriller, starring Tom Hiddleston and Olivia Colman will be back, this time set mostly in Colombia.
“More than 75% of the story is about Colombia,” says Barry Ryan, head of production at Ink Factory, which also produced Season 1 and will produce Seasons 2 and 3. The fact that there has been a peace process, that there was a conflict and that young soldiers were involved – that background has been used to inform and shape the narrative, he adds.
When series creator-writer David Farr thought about setting Season 2 in Colombia, he flew over with executive producer Tessa Inkelaar, on a “writing recce.” Drawing inspiration from his visit, he wrote all six episodes, completely off-book. In an interview with other outlets,...

Since her breakout role in 2013's The Wolf of Wall Street, Margot Robbie has had a knack for critically acclaimed projects. However, 2022 was not a good year for the actress.
That year, she collaborated with two famous directors on two star-studded films: David O. Russell's Amsterdam, which also starred Christian Bale, and Damien Chazelle's Babylon. The latter was an epic comedy-drama, loud, colorful, and expensive. While the film didn't impress the critics and the audience during its release, Babylon, which Robbie compared to The Shawshank Redemption, has now found a second life on streaming, becoming a hit on Paramount+, per FlixPatrol.
The Oscar-nominated film just debuted in the Top 10 charts on the streaming platform, and it made a huge impact. On its first day in the charts, Babylon debuted in third place on Paramount+, becoming the No. 1 film in two countries. Babylon was just behind Gladiator II, which...

One of the most polarizing films of 2022 is becoming a sleeper hit on streaming.Damien Chazelle's Hollywood epic Babylon, which currently holds a 57% Rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes, is currently the #3 top-streaming movie on Paramount+. Despite underwhelming audience and critical support during its release, it seems that the film is now finding its audience on streaming.
Babylon was a big risk for Chazelle, coming off the critical acclaim but box-office underperformance of First Man, his Neil Armstrong biopic. Its star-studded cast reunited Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie from Quentin Tarantino's 2019 hit Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, and carried a budget of $80 million Usd. Ultimately, it too was a financial disappointment, grossing only $64.9 million. Audiences may have been put off by its epic length (over three hours), its unflinching depiction of over-the-top decadence, or by its reviews, which were wildly polarized: some critics hailed it as a masterpiece, while...

A couple of months ago, we heard that Sophie Thatcher (Companion), Kristine Froseth (Sierra Burgess Is a Loser), Havana Rose Liu (No Exit), and Charles Melton (Warfare) were set to star in Her Private Hell, the latest film from director Nicolas Winding Refn. Now, Deadline has revealed the names of several more cast members. They are: Dougray Scott (Mission: Impossible II), Diego Calva (Babylon), Aoi Yamada (Perfect Days), Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool & Wolverine), and Hidetoshi Nishijima (Drive My Car). Details on the characters they’ll be playing have not been revealed, which makes sense, since we don’t have any idea what the story is, either. We’re assuming that Sophie Thatcher is the “her” of the title, but it’s not clear what the “private hell” is.
Refn is best known for making the 2011 film Drive. His other directing credits include Pusher, Bleeder, Fear X, Pusher II, Pusher III, Bronson,...

Nicolas Winding Refn is going for a film that’ll have a truly international identity — Deadline reports that Sophie Thatcher, Charles Melton, Kristine Froseth, and Havana Rose Liu will cross paths with Dougray Scott, Diego Calva, Aoi Yamada, Shioli Kutsuna and Hidetoshi Nishijima in Refn’s Her Private Hell. Production has already began on the Neon title which is poised for a Cannes 2026 launch. We have been following the project since it was first announced in April. Reminder that the film will work in both the English and Japanese language. While we still don’t know the plotline, we learn that the project was co-written alongside Esti Giordani.…...

Television director Daniel Minahan’s On Swift Horses left me with extremely mixed films. By no means is it an irrevocably dishevelled work. On the other hand, some of its plotting is so pedestrian it felt like a betrayal.
The very fact that the film has the power to evoke a sentiment as strong as betrayal proves the director and his writer Bryce Cass are on to something special. Sadly the film loses it way in trying to find a path through what was known in the 1950s as “forbidden love.”
In ploughing gently through the fertile farm of fragile feelings, the narration encounters unforeseen hurdles, much of it of the most vapid variety.
When we first meet the film’s very lovely heroine Muriel (Daisy Edgar-Jones) she reminded me Madhabi Mukherjee as Charulata in Satyajit Ray’s film. The same smouldering yearning, a longing for something that her arid marriage cannot provide.

After Babylon’s $64.9M Flop, Damien Chazelle Assembles James Bond and Oppenheimer to Save His Career
Damien Chazelle is planning to plot a show-worthy comeback after his 2022 tentpole, Babylon, bombed at the box office. However, for his return, Chazelle is not coming alone, as he is, reportedly, trying to enlist Oppenheimer and James Bond to script his return.
As per reports, the 40-year-old director is trying to bring in the Oscar-winning actor for Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy, and James Bond star Daniel Craig for his upcoming film, Chazelle, who himself is an Oscar winner, is reportedly looking forward to a successful comeback with the two heavyweights in the helm of his project.

As reported by Deadline, Damien Chazelle is working on his next project – the first since his box office disappointment, Babylon, in 2022. Made on an estimated budget of $78-70 million, the film earned only a meager $64.9 million.

The Night Manager Season 2 will feature a love triangle stage when the show comes back to the air in 2025. The British series initially wowed audiences in 2016 behind names like Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston. New episodes have been greenlit after a nearly decade-long wait, so the story can continue.
Diego Calva, who will star in The Night Manager Season 2, teased another love triangle plot point coming. Season 1 used the love triangle concept through most of its overarching narrative between Hugh Laurie's Richard Roper, Tom Hiddleston's Jonathan Pine, and Elizabeth Debicki's Jed Marshall. That plot device seems to be staying in place when the show returns for a new season.
Speaking exclusively with The Direct's Russ Milheim at SXSW while promoting On Swift Horses, Calva offered the love triangle information quickly while teasing what to expect from the new season:

Diego Calva is opening up about filming On Swift Horses with Jacob Elordi!
In the movie, the two play two characters who meet and start a hidden romance, with a steamy relationship.
This, of course, leads to scenes where they both end up in sexual encounters, and having to be without clothes.
In a recent interview, Diego dished on having to be naked on set with Jacob and what it was like kissing someone who is very tall.
Keep reading to find out more…
“There was one moment, probably the first scene when I realised how tall Jacob was and it was my first time acting looking up,” Diego told Attitude mag. “He was laughing at me! He’s way taller – I had like a neck pain for the first week from just kissing.”
As for filming sex scenes, Diego noted it was intimidating with Jacob.

There were many things that On Swift Horses stars Diego Calva and Sasha Calle learned about being queer and Latin in 1950s America while working with director Daniel Minahan. That includes the greaser subculture when the federal government took a major step to hiring openly LGBTQ+ workers, and that gay bars could have a designated song to alert patrons to “stop kissing and then pretend they’re really macho,” recalls Calva.

Directing an adaptation of an iconic book that has already been successfully adapted by the legendary Otto Preminger is an ambitious task for a first-time director, yet that is precisely what Durga Chew-Bose did for her debut feature, Bonjour Tristesse. Taking advantage of her superb cast and some gorgeous scenery, Chew-Bose manages to make her version of this story worth watching despite a safe script.
Bonjour Tristesse Review
Bonjour Tristesse follows a young woman vacationing in the south of France with her father and his younger girlfriend when their seemingly idyllic getaway is disrupted by the arrival of one of her late mother’s old friends. A little bit of debauchery and a whole lot of melodrama ensue, creating a film that goes down incredibly easy.

On this week’s Screen Talk, co-hosts Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio dig into Ryan Coogler’s $90-million period vampire musical “Sinners,” starring Michael B. Jordan as twins Smoke and Stack, as well as the boffo box office and the controversial deal.
Warners opened the movie to a bigger-than-expected $48 million Easter weekend, and a weak $15 million overseas. The only other horror film to ever earn an A CinemaScore was James Cameron’s sequel “Aliens” in 1986. It’s rare and bodes well for a broader audience. Nearly half of the opening-day audience was Black, which increased to 38 percent by the weekend’s end.
Warners has bragging rights over this one and, with “A Minecraft Movie,” enjoyed two movies grossing over $40 million. It spells some relief for embattled studio heads Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy. The movie is original and unusual, and thoughtful and entertaining enough to warrant success. It’s...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson for Wbgr-fm on April 24th, 2025, reviewing the new film “On Swift Horse,” based on a novel about two souls seeking identity. In theaters on April 25th.
Daisy Edgar-Jones is Muriel, a Kansas gal in the 1950s who will eventually marry Lee (Will Poulter), who is the brother to Julius (Jacob Elordi). The trio make a triangle, and make a promise to move together to San Diego, but Julius takes a detour in Las Vegas, where he takes up with Henry (Diego Calva), and they make other promises to each other. Meanwhile Muriel is setting up house with Lee, but finds herself attracted to neighbor Sandra (Sasha Calle). Instead of boy girl boy it’s now boy boy and girl girl … not the best situation to be in during the uptight 1950s.

I blame “Ozzie and Harriet.” The 1950s are often treated like a halcyon era for American culture, when all the cars were colorful land yachts, all the steaks were the size of a human head and four out of five doctors said smoking was good for you. Yup, the TV claimed that everything was just ducky in the United States in the 1950s. Unless of course you were a woman. Or if you weren’t white. Or if you were queer in literally any way.
Daniel Minahan takes us back to the decade of quiet desperation with his adaptation of “On Swift Horses,” a 2019 novel by Shannon Pufahl. The film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as Muriel, whose Korean War veteran boyfriend Lee (Will Poulter) has asked her to marry him many times. Which, as we all know, is in no way a red flag and just means you have to ask more often.

Which, as we all know, is in no way a red flag and just means you have to ask more often.

Although great novels do not always translate perfectly to the screen, using a profound piece of literature as inspiration is rarely a mistake. Many of the hardest aspects of storytelling are crafting characters with interiority, developing a world that feels like it could exist beyond the confines of the specific narrative, and detailing a time and era that informs the context of the situation. As a novel, “On Swift Horses” may have been pitched as an attempt to recapture the spirit of the “Great American Epic,” as there are innumerable comparisons to be made with the work of William Faulkner, John Steinbeck, and F. Scott Fitzgerlad. As a film, Daniel Minhan’s directorial debut is absorbing and understated, even if it often feels overexerted in trying to bring to life every detail from the page.

One of this weekend’s big film releases is yet another cinematic ride in Doc Brown’s DeLorean to what many believe to be a simpler, more “fun” era. Of course, last week, Sinners dispelled such notions about the oh-so segregated 1930s (and then tossed vampires into the mix). It’s appropriate that I referenced that 1985 classic, since this new film is also set in the 1950s, those “Happy Days” referred to in the classic TV show. Sure, it was the birthplace of great rock and roll, but for certain minorities, it was a time to be very careful to the point of hiding in the shadows. While this film also briefly touches on race, its main focus is on sexual orientation, which could also lead to harsh punishments from all sides (including the courts). Perhaps that’s why one of the characters in this tale wants to escape the...

“A gambler only has one obligation: to keep himself informed.”
When Julius (Jacob Elordi) dispenses this wisdom to his sister-in-law Muriel (Daisy Edgar-Jones) he’s ostensibly talking about cheating in card games. But in “On Swift Horses,” his words cause ripples beneath the surface in a makeshift family where nearly everyone is living a lie. He’s a gambler addicted to the highs of life, traversing desert casinos to chase the thrill of stealing a quick buck and fleeting connections with gay lovers. And she’s a married woman whose attraction to other women is becoming harder and harder to ignore, prompting her to start betting on horses to fund the kind of double life she’s starting to suspect she’ll need. Like moths to dueling flames,...

Review: In 2005, it was considered radical that Brokeback Mountain would get a wide theatrical release, considering it was a homosexual love story. How times have changed. Two decades later, On Swift Horses is the latest in a long line of queer films that boast substantial star power and nuanced narratives about same-sex relationships. The stigma is no longer as prominent as it once was, but there is still something to be said about heterosexual actors playing gay characters. Still, it bodes well for box office performance when you have up-and-coming talents like Jacob Elordi and Daisy Edgar-Jones in those roles. It’s been some time since we’ve had such a ridiculously attractive lineup of buzzworthy young actors as the quartet starring in Daniel Minahan’s On Swift Horses. Daisy Edgar-Jones, the tremendously talented star of Twisters and Normal People, is Muriel, a young woman in 1950s Kansas. Her soon-to-be husband, Lee, is played by Will Poulter, who has shined in everything from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to Kathryn Bigelow’s underrated Detroit. Returning from Korea––and making his introduction to Muriel shirtless, reclining on a car––is Lee’s brother, Julius. Yes, friends: the devil-may-care Julius is played by Jacob Elordi. I have not even gotten to the characters played by Babylon’s Diego Calva and Sasha Calle, a.k.a., the best thing about The Flash.

The American dream in all its slippery indefinability and spurious promise is the guiding light of Daniel Minihan’s On Swift Horses, based on the novel by Shannon Pufahl. In the tradition of The City and the Pillar, Giovanni’s Room, and The Price of Salt, the film looks at midcentury gay and lesbian life as a series of quotidian tragedies of compromise in the pursuit of health, wealth, and happiness. This was an era of national, capitalistic self-determinism that excluded queer individuals from the promised joys of the post-war boom.
Jacob Elordi stars as Julius, who, after an early discharge from the Korean War, winds his way back to the homestead of his brother, Lee (Will Poulter), and sister-in-law to be, Muriel (Daisy Edgar-Jones). Lee is thrilled to have his wayward brother by his side, and the trio eagerly plan a future in California together. Six months later, though,...

When “On Swift Horses” played as a secret screening at the Palm Springs Film Festival in January, at least half a dozen people walked out, not because it’s bad but because a certain contingent of the normally open-minded art-house audience hadn’t signed up for a gay love story. For that reason, it feels like the opposite of a spoiler — something between a consumer service and a selling point — to address what the festival capsules only coyly imply, using phrases like “self-discovery” (Toronto) and “exploring a love she never dreamed possible” (SXSW).

For the first time since 2022, this year’s South by Southwest Film & Television Festival does not overlap with the Oscars — which seems to have given SXSW curators a richer field to pull from, as the 2025 lineup has no shortage of buzzy titles and stars. Running from March 7-15, the festival will present 111 movies and 17 series featuring the likes of Blake Lively, Anna Kendrick, Seth Rogen, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Jacob Elordi, Ben Affleck, Nicole Kidman, Matthew McConaughey, Issa Rae, Jenna Ortega, Daveed Diggs and more.
The festival will open with “Another Simple Favor,” the sequel to the 2018 comedic thriller “A Simple Favor,” once again starring Lively and Kendrick and directed by Paul Feig. The new film is set in Capri, Italy, where Stephanie (Kendrick) and Emily (Lively) travel for Emily’s wedding to a rich Italian businessman; as the logline reveals, “murder and betrayal” ensue. Andrew Rannells, Bashir Salahuddin, Henry Golding, Elizabeth Perkins,...
