Underground Rap Veterans Paul Wall and Termanology Are Still Full of Surprises
Image
Paul Wall and Termanology are back where they first met, at Brooklyn’s Hub Studios. Before our hourlong conversation starts, various people in their circle shuffle by Termanology’s studio room to greet Wall, the amiable Texan who’s visiting the city to promote the deluxe edition of Start Finish Repeat, their second collaborative project.

Wall is clad in all-black attire, including a Houston Texans hoodie. Lounging on a couch before the interview starts, his demeanor is as chill as his beaming platinum grill looks. Lawrence, Massachusetts, native Termanology is similarly showing hometown pride,...

Logic and Seth MacFarlane on How the Rapper Enlisted His Idol to Guest-Croon on New Song, ‘Self-Medication’
Image
The rapper Logic has been unabashed about his love for Frank Sinatra, even adopting the nom de plume “Young Sinatra” for some of his mixtape releases. But he’s been just as up-front with his adoration for the man many consider the real young Sinatra: Seth MacFarlane, who, besides irreverently having created several of the world’s most popular animated comedy series, has released seven reverent albums of standards culled from the Great American Songbook.

Logic was finally able to bring his MacFarlane fandom to the ultimate fruition by enlisting the animation mogul to croon the soothing bridge of an otherwise typically hyperactive new hip-hop song, “Self-Medication.” Although not a single per se, it’s a track that’s gotten significant streaming boosts as Logic’s (and MacFarlane’s) fans have discovered it since the late February release of the rapper’s new album, “College Park.” It’s all of...

Joey Bada Is A Guy You Want to Root For Even When He Isn’t Sure What To Do With His Talent
Image
“I can take five years off ‘cause my shit is timeless,” claims Joey Bada on “The Baddest,” the opener to his third official album, 2000. The Brooklyn rapper takes pains to assert that he’s only leveled up since. No, he doesn’t mention his breakout acting performance in the second season of Mr. Robot, or his current stints on Grown-ish and Power Book III: Raising Kanan. He also doesn’t try to replicate the success of his double-platinum hit, 2016’s melodic-rap delight “Devastated.” However, he talks a lot about making “eight figures.

Statik Selektah Taps 2 Chainz, Killer Mike, Conway the Machine, Allan Kingdom for ‘Play Around’
Image
Producer and DJ Statik Selektah has released a new all-star track, “Play Around,” featuring 2 Chainz, Killer Mike, Conway the Machine, and Allan Kingdom. The song will appear on Statik Selektah’s new album, The Balancing Act, out November 27th via Mass Appeal.

For the track, Statik Selektah crafted a beat centered around a simple but ominous piano loop, anchored by dusty drums and bruising bass stabs. Conway, 2 Chainz, and Killer Mike all turn in pristine verses, while Allan Kingdom handles the song’s hook.

“‘Play Around’ was one of...

Image
Statik Selektah has recruited Nas, Gary Clark Jr., and Joey Bada$$ for the new track “Keep It Moving,” the first single from the producer’s upcoming album The Balancing Act.

Built around a sample of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David classic “Walk on By,” the track features the two New York rappers trading verses with Clark Jr. adding subtle guitar work to adorn the production.

Although “Keep It Moving” premiered in full Friday, the song had a quasi-debut this past summer when Dave Chappelle played it during one of the...

Happy 4/20, Here Is Wiz Khalifa on a Pink Flamingo Pool Toy
Ty Dolla $ign
Wiz Khalifa saluted his fans on 4/20 by releasing a new music video for his song “Taylor” along with a surprise mixtape. Only, the Pittsburgh rapper was so excited he kind of spoiled his own drop by tweeting cryptically the day before: “Fly Times Vol. 1 will inspire a whole new generation of bosses.” Khalifa’s vision of boss life is crystalized on “Taylor” and it’s endearingly attainable. All you need is a bikini, a pool floatie, some night-swimming and – obvious yet crucial – a massive joint.

Despite the chill vibe of the video,...

Katie Hasty's Top 50 Albums of 2014
St. Vincent
This isn't even a representation of what I listened to the most. Top 10 and Top Albums list at year-end can be a popularity contest. They can be just another way to celebrate singles artists. It could be about enjoying the brand just as much as the album itself. Top 10s can be a metaphor for feelings. Objectively, you can't say there's such thing as a definitive way to go-about making a year-end list. It can waver year to year: last year, I'd say my choices felt like they were all about color and boldness. This year, for me, it felt like it was all about discord. Fka Twigs is not for everybody, but  "LP1" simply was one of the most put-together, challenging sets that moved me this year. I can't listen to the damned thing just any time. That wasn't how I marked it. Young Fathers basically made an album...
