“Until 100 Nights of Hero, I hadn’t seen a project since Euphoria that so taps into what feels like the next generation of filmmakers, talent, and material,” said Johnson. “While the film appears to be a period drama, it’s not, and is modern in its sensibilities.

Fate: The Winx Saga Gets Magical Trailer Ahead of Netflix Debut
Eliot Salt, Hannah van der Westhuysen, Elisha Applebaum, Abigail Cowen, and Precious Mustapha in Fate: The Winx Saga (2021)
We are just days away from the highly-anticipated debut of Netflix's adaptation of Fate: The Winx Saga.

The series is adapted from the Italian animated series Winx Club, which aired for four seasons (2004–2009) before nabbing a revival at Nickelodeon for four more (2011–2019).

This live-action iteration chronicles the “coming-of-age journey of five fairies attending Alfea, a magical boarding school in the Otherworld where they must learn to master their powers while navigating love, rivalries, and the monsters that threaten their very existence.”

The trailer certainly shows off how the show is set up, and it looks like the lovechild of Legacies and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which is funny because it features a cast member from the latter.

The good news is that the series will be a quick binge, spanning six episodes in its opening season, and there is scope for it to continue.

It will be fun to...

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie review: reparo movens ad imaginem
MaryAnn’s quick take…

Forget about magical creatures: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them could use some help finding itself, and in figuring out who its protagonist is. I’m “biast” (pro): love the Harry Potter saga, love most of the movies

I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of Eddie Redmayne

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Forget about magical creatures: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them could use some help finding itself. I can’t figure out what this movie is about. Worse, I don’t think director David Yates or screenwriter J.K Rowling even know what their movie is about. It’s barely even about fantastic beasts and where to find them, except to the degree that wizard naturalist Newt Scamander accidentally lets a few escape from his mobile collection lab–research library–menagerie in 1926 New York City and...

A YouTube reviewer investigates a self-help app called I-Lived which purports to make the users’ dreams come true by issuing a few simple goals. Online idiot Josh (Jeremiah Watkins) falls prey to its allure, the app getting him a dream girlfriend and job within but a short amount of time. Logging off, he loses everything. But when he signs back in, the terms and conditions have changed, and Josh finds himself set to lose more than a few Bitcoins.

In this age of Tinder, Grindr and whathaveyou, i-Lived is a timely technological horror story, questioning to what extent we let technology into our lives – particularly where self help and dating apps are concerned. It’s well made too,...

Tired of Vampires That Are Cool and Super Sexy? Meet Sven ... Vampire Blogger
I suppose you can have too much of a good thing. At some point you reach your limit of vampires being totally superior to us. Oozing sexuality with inhuman strength and the uncanny ability to bed down anyone they choose, vampires can become a bit annoying with their superiority complexes. Fortunately there's a cure for all of that. Gorehounds, meet Sven ... The Uncool Vampire Blogger.

Created by Josh Cowdery and Chad Lindberg (of the 2010 version of I Spit on Your Grave) and originally posted on funnyordie.com, The Uncool Vampire Blogger follows the story of Sven, the vampire equivalent of Steve Urkel (or Screech from "Saved By The Bell" if you prefer). Although he is a bloodsucker, nothing else about Sven even remotely reminds us of the vamps from Bon Temps, La or Forks, Wa...and that's what makes him so endearing.

Below are the two Uncool Vampire Blogger shorts.
