Demascus Review: Corrupting the Primary Narrative
Image
In a television landscape increasingly crowded with high-concept experiments, Demascus arrives with a premise that feels both timely and deeply personal. The series introduces its title character, played by a wonderfully grounded Okieriete Onaodowan, as a 33-year-old Black man adrift in a sea of his own making.

He wryly calls his entry into therapy a “martyrdom” for his “Jesus year,” a sharp piece of dialogue that immediately establishes his wit and his weariness. His central problem is a distinctly modern one: he has spent so long cultivating an “unknowable” persona as a shield against the world that he has become a stranger to himself.

An anecdote about overhearing coworkers laugh at a story about him, of which he only catches the punchline, perfectly captures his alienation. He is perceived, yet never truly seen. The series sets this personal crisis in a “version of 2023” where self-driving cars and omnipresent AI assistants are the norm,...

Original ‘Hamilton’ Star Reveals Why He Still Hasn’t Left the Show
Image
Ten years ago, a brand-new musical hit New York City when Hamilton celebrated its off-Broadway debut on February 17, 2015. Tracing the tale of Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton, the production was the latest to come from Lin-Manuel Miranda, who previously swept critics off their feet with his ode to the city and its multitude of cultures with In the Heights. Now, a full decade, a record-breaking run at the Tony Awards, and a multitude of traveling productions as well as an on-screen taping later, Hamilton is still going strong. Although most of its original cast — which included Miranda,Leslie Odom Jr., Phillipa Soo, and Anthony Ramos — have moved on to other things, there’s one member of the original lineup who has continued to haunt the corridors and dressing rooms of the Richard Rodgers theater — Thayne Jasperson. During a brand-new interview, the actor opened up about what has kept him hanging on...

‘Hamilton’: Disney Sets Post Labor Day Theatrical Release For Filmed Version Of Broadway Stage Musical; Watch New Trailer
Image
Hamilton architect and star Lin-Manuel Miranda spilled the beans last night on The Tonight Show that the filmed version of his Tony-winning period Broadway show will hit theaters on Sept. 5. Disney will have more details very soon on this. The release date is already on Comscore. You can also see a new trailer above.

Disney in February 2020 bought the filmed version of the stage show for $75M, planning a theatrical release for October 2021. Covid sidetracked those plans and Hamilton dropped on Disney+ in July 2020 to great viewership success and ultimately two Emmy wins in a 12 nom count, including Outstanding Variety Special.

Hamilton will face off during the post Labor Day weekend with New Line’s Conjuring: Last Rites.

Hamilton additionally will be released in theaters in Canada, and Puerto Rico on Sept. 5, the UK and Ireland on Sept. 26, and Australia and New Zealand on Nov. 13.

Among box office benchmarks for Hamilton,...

2 Years After Getting Shelved by AMC, a Doomed Sci-Fi Comedy Series Gets Rescued by Tubi
Image
An exciting update has been revealed for the future of Demascus, an ill-fated sci-fi comedy series originally set for a TV release by AMC. Ahead of the show's debut, however, AMC Networks canceled the show in an effort to cut costs. It's taken some time, but the series has now found its home.

Per Deadline, Demascus is set to premiere on Tubi, the free streaming platform. The deal comes more than two years after AMC axed the six-part series. An exact premiere date has been announced for Aug. 7 with the show serving as a Tubi Original. The filmmakers and Tubi have also celebrated how the deal will finally allow Demascus to see the light of day.

“We’re excited to introduce audiences to Demascus — a bold, genre-bending blend of comedy and sci-fi that challenges conventions as much as it entertains,” Tubi's SVP Content Acquisition and Partnerships, Samuel Harowitz, said in a statement.

2 Years After Cancellation, ‘Better Call Saul’ Producer’s Unaired Sci-Fi Comedy Sets Release Date on a Free Streamer
Image
Demascus has been brought back from the grave. After two years in limbo following its cancellation by AMC Networks before its debut, the six-part sci-fi comedy series has finally found a new, free home. According to Deadline, Tubi reached a deal with AMC to pick up the show at long last, which is now being billed as a Tubi Original and will premiere on August 7. It hails from playwright and Clipped writer Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm and Better Call Saul executive producer Mark Johnson and stars Okieriete Onaodowan as the titular lead.

Originally slated to release in 2023, Demascus was axed amid a major cost-cutting effort at AMC that saw the demise of several series, including Invitation to a Bonfire and second seasons of 61st Street, Pantheon, and Moonhaven. At the time, it was part of a troubling trend of scrapping completed projects for tax purposes, as seen with Warner Bros. and Batgirl.

Every Time Station 19's Dean Miller Appeared in Grey's Anatomy, Explained
Image
Viewers assumed that if there were going to be a Grey's Anatomy spin-off, it would probably focus on the side hustles of one of the primary characters. However, it surprised fans when Station 19 premiered in 2018 as an official part of the Grey's Anatomy universe. The series focused on the lives of first responders, particularly firefighters, in a similar capacity as the surgeons of Grey Sloan Memorial. Among these unsung heroes was Dean Miller, an integral part of Station 19 and one of the few characters who left the show midway.

Several characters from both shows crossed paths in different crossover episodes where the responders and the doctors connected over their shared experiences and traumas. Dean Miller regularly popped up whenever Shonda Rhimes wanted to mix things up. The brave firefighter had an interesting and emotional arc that fitted well in both Grey's Anatomy and Station 19's narrative.

Dean...

Blue Bloods Season 14, Episode 16 Review: The Reagans Fix Problems Too Well
Image
The following contains major spoilers from Blue Bloods Season 14, Episode 16, "The Gray Areas," which debuted Friday, Nov. 22 on CBS.

Blue Bloods Season 14, Episode 16 may be called "The Gray Areas," but there's not much for the Reagan family to navigate in the hour. All of the episode's plotlines are relatively easy to solve, and all of them end with the Reagans fixing the problem in one way or another. It serves as an example of how the CBS show is a feel-good, family-oriented procedural worthy of its longtime fan following -- but it's not the best that this series can do.

"The Gray Areas" starts with a veteran NYPD officer becoming a public figure after a life-threatening subway assault, leading to an argument between Frank Reagan and Mayor Chase. Elsewhere, Eddie Janko-Reagan is to the rescue again, this time for her own partner. And the case of the week for Danny...

Hamilton: All 46 Songs In The Musical, Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
While there are no bad Hamilton songs, there are definitely some that are better than others, and the best Hamilton songs are typically the ones that pack emotional punches for the audience. The smash hit musical Hamilton reached a whole new audience thanks to the release of the recorded performance on Disney+. Created by and starring Lin Manuel Miranda, Hamilton is based on the life of the United States' first Treasury Secretary, Alexander Hamilton. While he's not the most obvious subject of a hip-hop musical, Hamilton's life story captured the imagination of Miranda after he read Ron Chernow's 2004 biography of the founding father.

Since its premiere in February 2015, Hamilton has become a runaway success and cultural phenomenon, winning 12 Tony Awards in 2016 and opening on London's West End in 2017, where it won seven Olivier Awards. A special recorded performance was released on Disney+ to widespread acclaim, so more newcomers than...

The Best Station 19 Episodes, Ranked
Image
Some of the episodes discussed in this piece cover topics like sexual assault and suicidal ideation.

Station 19 joined ABC's Thursday lineup in 2018 as a spinoff of Grey's Anatomy, which is centered around the firefighters and paramedics of Seattle's fictional Station 19. Now in its seventh -- and final -- season, Station 19 began after Ben Warren (Jason George), the husband of Grey's Anatomy's Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), decided that he no longer wanted to be a surgeon and instead wanted to serve Seattle as a first responder. When Warren joins Station 19, he begins working with a powerful, heroic group of people who put the lives of the community before their own.

Originally led by Pruitt Herrera (Miguel Sandoval), Station 19 prides itself on being a family that cares for each other. They've seen each other through marriage, divorce, children, new love, and both anticipated and unexpected loss.

Spoilers are ahead for Station 19's series finale.

The Station 19 series finale's flash forward confirms that Pru Miller-Warren becomes a firefighter. Pru's firefighter story honors Dean Miller, her biological father who died very tragically while saving others. The Grey's Anatomy spin-off's crossover moments impact characters like Ben, Bailey, and Pru, making the flash forward a needed bit of full-circle closure for both shows.

After a solid seven seasons, Station 19 drew to a close with its 105th episode, the aptly titled "One Last Time." As established in Station 19 season 7, episode 9, the series finale saw 19's firefighters banding together against a fast-spreading wildfire that threatened the Seattle area. The natural disaster cropped up in the Grey's Anatomy season 20 finale too, as Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital's surgeons scrambled to help those impacted by smoke and fire damage. Given that Station 19 is a Grey's Anatomy spin-off, the synergy between...

Jason George Poised To Return To ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ After End Of ‘Station 19’
Image
Exclusive: In 2017, Jason George left ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy to help launch its spinoff series, Station 19. For seven seasons, he was a series regular on the firefighter drama as Ben Warren while making frequent guest appearances on the mothership series. With Station 19 coming to an end, all signs point to him going back to Grey’s Anatomy, a return which the Station 19 finale helped set up.

According to sources, there is no deal in place and the exact capacity in which George would return to Grey’s Anatomy is unclear but talks are ongoing, and the intent is to have him back on the show where he has been since Season 6, including a series regular stint from S12-S14, before moving to Station 19. Reps for ABC and ABC Signature, which produces Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19, declined comment.

Rumblings about George potentially rejoining Grey’s Anatomy next season started in January.

‘Station 19’ Says Goodbye: What Happened To Each Character in the Series Finale?
Image
Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “One Last Time,” the series finale of ABC’s“Station 19,” now streaming on Hulu.

For a show that spent most of its time putting its characters in mortal danger, it’s remarkable that “Station 19” completed its series finale with nearly everyone alive and well — except, of course, for Kate (Kiele Sanchez), the newest addition to 19 who never did quite manage to become a part of the family. Kate got sucked up into a fire tornado — a firenado, perhaps — becoming the finale’s only casualty. Despite injuries and burns and smoke inhalation, everyone else lived on to firefight another day, with visions of their bright futures dancing ahead of them. After years of dealing with the harsh realities of firefighting, they all got their happy ending.

The episode, which was directed by showrunner Peter Paige, spent most of its time continuing to...

Image

After 7 seasons, the time has finally come to say goodbye to Seattle’s hardest-working firefighters on ABC’s Station 19. As they say, all good things must come to an end. But, thanks to some gifts left behind in the finale by showrunners Peter Paige and Zoanne Clack and the writers, fans can expand on the firefighters’ stories well beyond tonight.

The episode titled “One Last Time” continues the story from last week’s episode as Station 19 is battling a raging wildfire targeting Seattle. Everyone is in danger but they’re keeping cool heads and working together to protect anyone else from getting hurt. In a particularly intense scene, the team has to take cover when a firestorm threatens everyone’s lives quickly. They get under aluminum fire shelters that they pull over themselves like a blanket.
