A press advocacy group has alleged in a lawsuit that its members were physically assaulted and blocked from entering areas they should’ve been allowed access when covering fierce pushback from protesters challenging aggressive U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement sweeps in Los Angeles.
The complaint, filed against the city of Los Angeles and LAPD chief Jim McDonnell in California federal court on Monday, comes amid escalating tensions between local police and media in which officers have allegedly harassed reporters following street demonstrations. It alleges violations of the First and 14th amendments, as well as state laws intended to limit the use of so-called “less-lethal munitions,” and seeks a court order that would bar law enforcement from further misconduct.
“The widespread use of force against journalists by LAPD officers indicates an intent to prevent public scrutiny of police conduct toward demonstrators, a refusal to abide by constitutional and statutory safeguards for journalists in these circumstances,...

It was a rather sobering edition of The View on Thursday (January 9) for several reasons. First, the episode’s live airtime was preempted by the funeral procession for late former President Jimmy Carter. The show also began with a devastating report from ABC News’ Matt Gutman, who detailed the devastation to the Pacific Palisades from the ashen ground. And then when the first topic for panel discussion came about, it was a response to the Surgeon General’s new guidance that alcohol consumption is related to at least seven different types of cancer. After Joy Behar stumbled through the words to her planned response — in which she was trying to say she isn’t a big drinker, so it doesn’t affect her that much — Sara Haines jokingly impersonated her to sloppily say, “I only drink before the show!” “No! I’ve been on this show 28 years and I have...

ABC News reporter Matt Gutman appeared live on “The View” on Thursday morning, reporting from on the ground in the Palisades in some of the aftermath of the massive fire that’s been burning for three days. But he truly stunned the hosts and audience when he revealed that he was actually reporting from the burnt-down remains of one of his own relatives’ homes.
Gutman noted that he was just off Sunset Boulevard as he took viewers through some of the wreckage that has occurred from the flames, detailing the extent of the loss and what he’s heard from first responders.
At one point, host Sara Haines asked specifically about whether there is a clear “sense of how long firefighters expect this to go on” yet.

On the morning of July 18, 2014, Dan Markel, a well-loved law professor at Florida State University and a father of two young children, returned home and was confronted by an unidentified attacker who shot him twice in the head at close range. The crime scene did not yield immediate clues about the perpetrators, except for one lead – a vague description from a neighbor who witnessed a speeding Prius leaving Dan’s driveway. Detectives faced a challenging investigation, but with the assistance of the FBI and a series of interviews, they were able to reconstruct the Prius’s movements by analyzing surveillance footage and toll booth records. This ultimately led to the capture of the hired hitmen responsible for Dan’s tragic death. However, a crucial question remained unanswered: Who had orchestrated this murder-for-hire plot?

News correspondents are trained to keep their emotions in check, but sometimes a story comes along that makes such a feat all but impossible.
Anderson Cooper, Richard Engel, Holly Wiliams, Trey Yingst, Matt Gutman and Clarissa Ward have been seen on camera in recent days trying to report on a horrific event that is emotionally draining: the invasion of Israel by Hamas militants, replete with violence, hostage-taking and explosive force.
“I’ve seen many challenging things so far,” says Yingst, the Fox News correspondent who is based in Israel and has been reporting on the attack since October 7, when he held forth from his own balcony. He responded to questions via email. “We arrived in the south as Palestinian militants were still killing and kidnapping Israelis. President Joe Biden said today that the Hamas attack on Israel was “an act of sheer evil,” sternly describing horrific reports of the terrorists’ brutality in targeting Jewish men, women, children and babies.
In remarks carrried across cable and broadcast networks Monday, Biden cited “stomach turning reports of babies being killed, entire families slain. Young people massacred while attending a music festival to celebrate peace. Women raped, assaulted, paraded as trophies.”
Coming off a telephone call with Israeli Pm Benjamin Netanyahu earlier today, a stern Biden also said that the “blood thirstiness brings to mind the worst rampages of Isis. This is terrorism.”
“We must be crystal clear: We stand with Israel. We stand with Israel. We will make sure it has what it needs to take care of its citizens, to defend itself, to respond to this attack,” he said. He said that Israel “has a right to respond,...

ABC News Chief National Correspondent Matt Gutman kicked off the talk show with live reporting from Sderot, Israel, getting the hosts and viewers up to speed on the current state of things, specifically the next steps for Israel’s military. But, as he explained everything, he was interrupted.

Though the SAG-AFTRA strike is still in effect, late night will return starting on Friday with a new episode of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher.” It’s a timeline that puts late night in an odd position: Which guests can appear on late night when the actors’ strike is still in progress?
Luckily, we have an answer to that question thanks to daytime television and SAG-AFTRA’s own rules.
Why can late night return during the SAG-AFTRA strike?
The state of late night is a little bit confusing, because several hosts have also done acting work and are part of SAG-AFTRA. For example, Jimmy Fallon starred in “Fever Pitch” and John Oliver starred in “Community,” as well as the live-action “Lion King.”
Because late-night shows fall under the Network Television Code, these striking performers can return to their jobs. Late night is officially part of what’s called...

A Texas public safety official faced a barrage of questions over the timeline of police response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School that left 19 children and two teachers dead.
Victor Escalon, South Texas regional director for the Department of Public Safety, told reporters that they are still trying to determine why it took an hour for tactical teams to arrive at the scene and back up local police who initially arrived at the school and were met by gunfire from the shooter.
Escalon also said that a school resource officer did not confront the shooter outside the building, despite previous reports, and that he entered the school through an unlocked door. The gunman “was not confronted by anybody,” he said.
Escalon said that at about 11:28 Am on Tuesday, the shooter, having just shot his grandmother in the face, crashed his vehicle and then jumped out of the passenger side of his truck.

ABC News has suspended chief national correspondent Matt Gutman over a false statement he made on-air Sunday following the death of Kobe Bryant.
Gutman had erroneously reported that all four of Bryant’s daughters were on board the helicopter that crashed into the hills of Calabasas. Bryant and his 13 year-old daughter Gianna were among nine people killed in the accident. Bryant’s other three children were not on board the aircraft.
“Reporting the facts accurately is the cornerstone of our journalism,” ABC News said in a statement. “As he acknowledged on Sunday, Matt Gutman’s initial reporting was not accurate and failed to meet our editorial standards.”
It’s unknown how long Gutman will be suspended for the mistake, which he corrected Sunday evening, along with an apology on-air and on Twitter.
Today I inaccurately reported it was believed that four of Kobe Bryant’s children were on board that flight.

ABC News has suspended its chief national correspondent, Matt Gutman, after he mistakenly reported on live television that all of late basketball star Kobe Bryant’s children had died in Sunday’s helicopter crash.
Gutman corrected the report on a later broadcast to clarify that the only members of the Bryant family who died in the crash were Kobe and his daughter, Gianna. Seven others also perished in the crash.
Gutman’s original remarks were made before the official identities of the victims had been confirmed. He has since apologized for the error.
