Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 9 Review – Sing, Sing, Sing

This Penny Dreadful: City of Angels review contains spoilers.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 9

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 9, “Sing, Sing, Sing,” is, for the most part, a celebration, but not because of any anti-fascist resistance or solved crime. Last week’s cat and mouse game didn’t catch itself a canary. Tonight’s episode opens where last week’s left off. Detectives Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) are licking their wounds after a machine gun ambush sidetracked their takedown. Michener is most pissed about the loss of his classic V-12 car and he’s running on all pistons.

The standoff between Michener and Richard Goss (Thomas Kretschmann) is a joy to behold. There are so many layers to it, beyond the enormously satisfying dialogue. Michener’s a Jew in a restricted club, which has to be fun for Lane to play going in.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 8 Review – Hide And Seek

This Penny Dreadful: City of Angels review contains spoilers.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 8

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 8, “Hide and Seek,” begins a new cat and mouse game. Detectives Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) cleared the police docket by pinning a series of murders on one suspect, Diego Lopez (Adan Rocha) and were given a week’s paid leave as a thank you. But the two cops are having a devil of a time filling their idle hours.

Last week’s episode, “Maria and the Beast,” ended with a change of plans. Lewis called in his favor and enlisted Tiago in his understaffed and unfunded war against Nazis in Los Angeles. But the takedown became a stakeout when the two cops saw other major players sitting down to dinner with the first wave of the Third Reich, Richard Goss (Thomas Kretschmann). As “Hide and Seek” gets moving,...

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 7 Review – Maria and the Beast
Image
This Penny Dreadful: City of Angels review contains spoilers.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 7

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 7, “Maria and the Beast,” brings into focus the question we’ve all been asking since the series began: Why is the Vega family being picked on so badly? Santa Muerte (Lorenza Izzo ) left her mark on Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) when he was a young boy and lost his father, and she hasn’t let up since then.

The Diego Lopez (Adan Rocha) confession is big time news. They’re calling him a mad dog killer and Detective Tiago Vega’s local bartender says he should get a medal for the arrest. But, it doesn’t look like he gave Tiago a free drink. At least he can get a free shave from Sister Molly (Kerry Bishé). That’s what she does for the homeless who come into her soup kitchen.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 6 Review – How It Is With Brothers
Image
This Penny Dreadful: City of Angels review contains spoilers.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 6

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 6, “How It Is With Brothers,” opens in a frightening situation completely outside of supernatural influence. There are no whispering spirits, no conjurations of dark saints or sacred monsters. There is only righteous rage and racial hatred, a far more frightening combination than any creature featured in the gothic series which started the franchise. Tiago (Daniel Zovatto) should have taken a swig from Lewis’ (Nathan Lane) flask before walking into enemy territory: his own precinct.

The two detectives bring in Diego Lopez (Adan Rocha) for the murder of officer Reilly (Rod McLachlan) and all the other cops want a piece of flesh. The young Pachuco is bleeding when he is brought in, and this is like chumming the water to attract a feeding frenzy. This dynamic will take different forms...

‘Murphy Brown’ Boss Breaks Down Trump Rally Episode
Candice Bergen in Murphy Brown (1988)
Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Beat the Press,” the 10th episode of “Murphy Brown.”

Diane English, creator and showrunner of “Murphy Brown,” set out to tell the revival season of the classic 1980s and 1990s sitcom through the “prism of the press.” So it was really only a matter of time before the characters came face-to-face with angry citizens who have come to believe members of the media are the enemy.

In the 10th episode of “Murphy Brown’s” revival season, “Beat the Press,” Frank Fontana (Joe Regalbuto) attends one of Donald Trump’s rallies, and when Trump (voiced by Bob Dibuono) spots him in the audience, he calls him “fibbing Frank” and tells his supporters to “let him know what you think of him.” This incites a small mob of “red hats” to surround Frank and beat him up, ultimately landing him in the hospital.

Why the New ‘Murphy Brown’ Includes a Dreamer
Candice Bergen
Candice Bergen herself is now vivaciously buzzing over the power of apps.

“On Instagram I just get constant thank yous, and people saying things like, ‘I feel so much better. It has given me hope. It has given me joy,’” Bergen said on Saturday at the “Murphy Brown” panel at PaleyFest.

The 70-year-old star of the bold political comedy joked that she thought she might never work again after years in the industry. Today, she is happy about the attraction to the blast-from-the-past character. “I think people need comfort,” Bergen said. “I think the last couple of years have been upsetting to people and disorienting to people. I think it might in some way be about finding something that, ‘Well, I know that. That was when things were okay,’ and if I watch that show again, it will make me feel like things are okay again.”

Additionally, it was recently announced that Merle Dandridge will play Murphy and Co.'s arrogant network boss.

During a panel discussion with star Candice Bergen at Paleyfest NY on Saturday night, Murphy Brown creator and showrunner Diane English explained that she felt it was important the revival better reflect the U.S. today.

‘Murphy Brown’ Gets a #MeToo-Themed Episode and Reclaims Her Power With ‘#MurphyToo’
[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for the “Murphy Brown” episode airing Thursday, Oct. 11, entitled “#MurphyToo.”]

Near the beginning of “#MurphyToo,” the fourth episode of the CBS revival “Murphy Brown,” eternally perky Corky (Faith Ford) is reflecting back on times in her life when she had to deal with inappropriate men. “I don’t know any woman who hasn’t had an experience,” she says, turning to Murphy (Candice Bergen), expecting her to agree with her.

Murphy instead jokes, “What guy would be stupid enough to try something with me,” but the formidable journalist is holding back. As she later reveals to her son Avery (Jake McDorman), she does have her own story.

It’s a touchy time for a CBS sitcom to take on #MeToo so directly, given that former CEO Les Moonves, recently exited following a number of sexual misconduct allegations. While creator Diane English teased “#MurphyToo” this summer at the Television Critics Association press tour,...

‘Murphy Brown’ To Tackle Trump’s Wall & Ice, Casts Adan Rocha As Daca Dreamer
As an inherently political comedy, CBS’ Murphy Brown revival was fully expected to take on the Donald Trump presidency, and now we know it will include his controversial immigration policies.

Relative newcomer Adan Rocha has been cast as a new series regular on the new Murphy Brown, from original creator Diane English and Warner Bros. TV.

First appearing in the show’s second episode, he will play Miguel, a Mexican Dreamer who came to the United States at the age of one. Now he’s a college student working at Phil’s Bar alongside Phyllis (Tyne Daly) for extra money to put toward tuition. Quick with a quip, he’s always making cracks about “The Wall” and Ice.

English previously had said that the revival would address Trump’s attacks on mainstream media and its coverage, which he brands “fake news.”

Candice Bergen is back as intrepid investigative journalist and news anchor Murphy Brown.
