James Gunn Confirms Upcoming Dcu Movie Dropped Its Director
Image
James Gunn recently revealed that one of the highly-anticipated Dcu movies has lost its original director. Luca Guadagnino is no longer attached to Sgt. Rock.

Gunn confirmed the news in an interview on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz. Despite recent reports that the Sgt. Rock movie had been canned by DC Studios, Gunn revealed that he's still "hugely" excited to make the movie. When asked if Guadagnino was still attached, he responded with a simple: "No."

News of a Sgt. Rock movie began circulating back in September, with Guadagnino said to be directing alongside Justin Kuritzkes serving as the film's writer. In November, it was said that Daniel Craig was being eyed to play the title role, but these rumors were later shot down when it was reported that The Penguin star Colin Farrell was in talks for the role.

Filming for Sgt. Rock was initially planned...

DC Studios Confirms the Current State of 'Swamp Thing' After Cancellation Report
Image
There is still hope for Swamp Thing's Dcu future as news of the film's cancellation has been greatly exaggerated, according to James Gunn. Ever since the news broke that a previously announced Dcu title had been canceled, fans have been speculating which film it might have been. A recent interview with Gunn the other day had many speculating that the canceled film in question might have been James Mangold's Swamp Thing, given Gunn's comments that the film had a writer and director attached.

However, James Gunn has debunked the claims that Swamp Thing has been canceled. Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, via Dcu Updates, Gunn confirmed Swamp Thing is still in development and that he recently spoke with James Mangold about the film. What is holding Swamp Thing up? James Mangold's other projects include the development of a Star Wars film centered on...

DC's 'Sgt. Rock' Movie Isn't Dead Yet Despite Oscar-Nominated Director's Exit
Image
Despite losing its Oscar-nominated director and high-profile cast, Sgt. Rock is still marching forward — at least, according to DC Studios co-head James Gunn. In a recent interview with Happy Sad Confused, Gunn confirmed that the WWII-set superhero project is “still moving forward,” but without Luca Guadagnino, who quietly exited the film earlier this year. “I’m still hugely excited by it,” Gunn said, while noting that the film isn’t quite where he wants it to be creatively. His comments align with what he previously told Entertainment Weekly: the project isn’t cancelled, just delayed, and likely due for a creative overhaul.

Originally greenlit with Guadagnino attached to direct and frequent collaborator Justin Kuritzkes writing the script, Sgt. Rock was once a dark horse prestige contender in DC’s developing slate. The team assembled was stacked: Colin Farrell was reportedly onboard to play the title role after Daniel Craig dropped out earlier this year.

James Gunn Reveals DC Studios Canceled a Dcu Film That Was Greenlit
Image
James Gunn might have inadvertently revealed what the canceled Dcu film is, and it is one that will likely disappoint fans. In June 2025, the DC Studios co-head confirmed that one of the previously announced Dcu films had been scrapped. Many thought it was the recently canceled Sgt. Rock film from Challengers director Luca Guadagnino, but Gunn's recent comments have suggested that the film could just be delayed. Fans have speculated which announced title was canned, and a recent comment by Gunn might mean bad news for Swamp Thing.

Speaking withNPR, Gunn gave details about a greenlit Dcu film that won't see the light of day. After multiple drafts of the script, he revealed that it just was not coming together, and decided, for the sake of the studio, and the filmmakers attached, it was better to kill the project than move forward with it. The most illuminating piece is...

Artful Desire: Sex, Style, and Scandal in Luca Guadagnino’s Films
Image
A Relentless Output, A Personal Turn Since ‘Call Me By Your Name’ in 2017, Luca Guadagnino has quietly become one of the most consistently productive auteurs working today. He’s not quite working on a clock- but it’s close. With near-annual feature releases, plus the occasional short film or music video nestled in between, Guadagnino’s output is beginning to resemble Woody Allen’s in terms of consistency- that is, if Guadagnino can keep the pace up for another forty-something years. This year continues the streak. After releasing what he has called his most personal project yet, ‘Queer’ (now streaming on HBO Max), Guadagnino already has another film on deck. ‘After the Hunt,’ a psychological drama is set for release this October, starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield, as well as two Guadagnino alums- Chloë Sevigny (‘Bones and All’) and Michael Stuhlbarg (‘Call Me By Your Name’). Luca Guadagnino’s...

James Gunn says Sgt. Rock is still moving forward, but “needs to change” creatively
Luca Guadagnino at an event for I Am Love (2009)
Luca Guadagnino was set to begin filming Sgt. Rock for DC Studios this summer, but the project has been delayed. While conflicting reports have surfaced about the reasons behind the setback, James Gunn has confirmed that Sgt. Rock is still moving forward — it just needs a few creative adjustments before production can begin.

“I feel like we’re in a pretty good place,” Gunn told Entertainment Weekly. “We’re still moving forward, but it’s not going to be…What would Peter want me to say here? … So it’s still moving forward, but, yeah, right now it wasn’t exactly where I wanted it to be creatively, and so it needs to change a little bit.“

James Gunn Says 'Sgt. Rock' Is Still "Moving Forward" at DC Studios
Image
James Gunn has clarified the status of Sgt. Rock, revealing that the in-development Dcu movie may still happen. Despite not being part of the original Chapter 1 - Gods and Monsters announcement in January 2023, Sgt. Rock quickly picked up steam at Warner Bros. when director Luca Guadagnino and writer Justin Kuritzkes, hot off Challengers, were hired to direct and pen the script for the movie, respectively. Despite Colin Farrell being eyed for the lead role as late as March 2025, by the next month, the project was put on hold.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn was asked to set the record straight on the Sgt. Rock film. Rumors have been flying about why the movie was delayed and the current status of the movie. Among the major concerns previously cited was an issue with the film's shooting location and weather conditions. It seems a bigger factor was the script, which Gunn did...

Materialists Ending Explained: Did Lucy & John Truly Win At Love? Celine Song Breaks Down The Final Scene
Image
Materialists Ending Explained ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

After the success of Past Lives, director Celine Song has become one of the most sought-after names in the filmmaking industry. The director’s construction of human and emotional narratives enables the audience to look into a story from different angles. The deep exploration of the human psyche when it comes to interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships is what sets director Song’s work different from the rest. It caters to the modern-day thinking and lifestyle of dealing with complicated labels, overwhelming narratives, and hyper-local beliefs that seek respite amidst the never-ending chaos of a journey that is life. Celine Song’s latest foray into the web of human relationships comes in the form of Materialists starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal.

The movie tells the story of Lucy (Dakota Johnson), a well-to-do matchmaker in New York City. Despite helping find men and...

Why Materialists Ends With City Hall Credits Explained By Director
Image
Warning: The following contains spoilers for Materialists.

Materialists director Celine Song explains the security-camera view at the end of the movie. Revolving around Dakota Johnson's matchmaker Lucy as she tries to decide between her dream match, Harry (Pedro Pascal), and her imperfect ex, John (Chris Evans), the romantic comedy that arrived on June 13 sees Lucy eventually decide to marry for love despite all odds. At the end of Materialists, she marries John at the City Hall.

In an interview with IndieWire, Song revealed why she ended the movie with the city hall scene. She shared that City Hall, which was where she and her husband, screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes, got married, is "the most romantic place on Earth and the least romantic place on Earth," a contradiction that drew her attention and ties to the cavemen concept in modern terms. The grand view also puts Lucy and John's love story in perspective,...

Mystery Behind James Gunn’s Canceled DC Project: It’s Definitely Not Robert Pattinson’s The Batman 2
Image
Since embarking on the Dcu ship, James Gunn has been pretty vocal about prioritizing writers above all else, recognizing them as the backbone of productions. Gunn, being a writer/director himself, swore to never head into production without a finished screenplay at the helm.

This quality-driven approach to the Dcu is a breath of fresh air in the current mainstream climate, where big-budget movies are primarily studio-driven and risk-averse. But as a consequence, a seemingly confirmed movie was recently axed, and fortunately, it’s not The Batman.

The Batman 2 is still afloat amidst one Dcu project cancellation A still from The Batman (2022) | Credit: Warner Bros.

Given James Gunn‘s regime has stricter adherence to screenplays, the Superman director recently confessed that a movie, which was greenlit within the studio, was axed as a result of screenplay issues, adding (via Rolling Stone), “The screenplay wasn’t ready”.

We just killed a project.

The Ending of ‘Materialists’ Might Not Mean What You Think It Does
Image
[Editor’s note: The following story contains spoilers for “Materialists,” particularly its ending.]

“Materialists” has more on its mind than your standard-issue romantic dramedy: It’s a cutting exploration of modern dating and how impoverished it can be, with Celine Song’s latest A24 collaboration using Irl matchmaking as a smart (and more cinematic) template for her inquiries rather than making the film swipe-centric.

Dakota Johnson plays Lucy, whose $80,000-a-year Manhattan matchmaking job at the company Adore has outfitted her with a hardened cynicism toward dating and romance, about how we as single humans turn ourselves into value-based merchandise to make ourselves more desirable. Her last meaningful relationship was with struggling theater actor John (Chris Evans), who’s been an ex for some time and with whom things ended badly amid disagreements over money and the future, until she meets financier Harry (Pedro Pascal) at a client’s wedding. They fall into a fast, glossy fling, over martinis and...

Celine Song on Why ‘Materialists’ Skipping Festivals for Theaters Was the Right Move — and the Irresistible Influence of ‘Sex and the City’
Image
The Monday morning I sat down with Celine Song in New York City, where she lives and where her hotly awaited new film “Materialists” is set, came about an hour after reviews broke. Led by an appealing cast and doubling as a breezy romance and an incisive critique of modern dating, “Materialists” is her second movie as a director, and her first since “Past Lives” turned Song into the Oscar-nominated belle of the 2023-2024 awards season.

Reactions pouring in were going well, as most reviews (including IndieWire’s) reacted positively to writer/director Song’s portrait of matchmaker-to-the-moneyed Lucy (Dakota Johnson), who balances the clinical outlook on romance her job demands with an unexpected love triangle between herself, a lethally charming private-equity broker and potential client named Harry (Pedro Pascal), and her less-polished, struggling-actor ex John (Chris Evans).

But Song, she said, doesn’t read reviews. She leaves that task to her husband,...

Artificial: Luca Guadagnino set to direct OpenAI movie with Andrew Garfield in early talks to star
Luca Guadagnino at an event for I Am Love (2009)
After the production of Sgt. Rock got pushed back, Luca Guadagnino moved quickly to fill his schedule with Artificial. The director is in talks to helm the project for Amazon MGM Studios, and although deals haven’t closed, insiders say Andrew Garfield (We Live in Time), Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown), and Yura Borisov (Anora) are in early talks to star.

The film recounts the tumultuous period at artificial intelligence company OpenAI in 2023, when CEO Sam Altman was fired and rehired in a matter of days. It’s assumed that Garfield will play Altman, Barbaro will play chief technology officer Mira Murati, and Borisov will play Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder who led the movement to boot Altman out of the company. Assuming the deals close, the plan is to shoot in San Francisco and Italy this summer. The script was penned by Simon Rich (Miracle Workers), who will also produce...

Andrew Garfield Reteams With Oscar-Nominated Director for New Amazon Movie
Image
Hollywood cannot stop Luca Guadagnino from making a movie. With his DC Universe movie Sgt. Rock delayed until 2026, the filmmaker is quickly pushing ahead with a radically different feature at Amazon MGM Studios.

According to Deadline, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker (Call Me By Your Name) is set to reunite with his After the Hunt star Andrew Garfield on Artificial, which sources state will revolve around "the period at the artificial intelligence company OpenAI in 2023 that saw CEO Sam Altman fired and rehired in a matter of days." However, it's not a done deal just yet, as Guadagnino and Garfield are still in talks for the movie.

Also in talks for the movie are recent acting Oscar nominees Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown) and Yura Borisov (Anora). If all the deals close, the plan would be to shoot Artificial, which boasts a screenplay by Simon Rich, later this year. Guadagnino was initially...

Luca Guadagnino has found his next project.

While the director, who always has several projects in the hopper (including an update of Bret Easton Ellis’ “American Psycho”) will make “Artificial” for Amazon MGM Studios. Andrew Garfield, Monica Barbaro and “Anora” star Yura Borisov are in early talks. The film is being readied to shoot later this year.

The script, by Simon Rich, is said to be a comedic drama set in the world of artificial intelligence. Rich will also produce alongside Heyday Films’ David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford. Jennifer Fox will also produce.

Guadagnino’s DC movie “Sgt. Rock,” written by his “Queer” and “Challengers” scribe Justin Kuritzkes, was meant to go into production this year with Colin Farrell in the title role. City on Fire: Matt Ross to direct Austin Butler in adaptation of Don Winslow novel
Austin Butler
Austin Butler has been attached to star in an adaptation of Don Winslow’s City on Fire for the last two years, but the project is finally moving forward as it now has a director. Deadline reports that Matt Ross (Captain Fantastic) has been tapped to direct City on Fire for Sony’s 3000 Pictures.

The novel is the first installment of a trilogy that “focuses on two criminal empires — one Irish, the other Italian — that control all of New England, until a modern-day Helen of Troy tears them apart and starts a brutal war. ‘Die Hard’ Dream Team Almost Made ‘Sgt. Rock’ Until Clint Eastwood Botched It
Image
DC Comics Sgt. Rock is one of the most famous characters of all time, backed by a prolific comic book legacy. Despite several attempts to bring the character to live-action several times over the years, no such project has been able to make it past the development stage.

While DC Studios recently canceled a Sgt. Rock film under director Luca Guadagnino, there was once a time that the Die Hard team almost came close to making a live-action film. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as the iconic character, the project unfortunately fell apart, all thanks to Clint Eastwood.

For years, the fictional worlds created by Dan Brown have taken readers on high-stakes journeys, shadowy conspiracies, and a race against time. So what would happen if such pulse-pounding stakes of a Dan Brown thriller were to collide with the brilliance of Luca Guadagnino set against the gritty world of World War II?

Well, the result would have been the recently canceled Sgt. Rock project over at DC Studios. Initially set to be directed by Guadagnino, the film would have been a cinematic Brown-esque masterpiece. Unfortunately, fans have been left disappointed once again.

Sgt. Rock May Have Been Scrapped Due To Doubts About Director's Abilities; Could It Shoot Next Year Instead?
Image
Yesterday, we learned that DC Studios has halted production on Sgt. Rock. The movie, written by Justin Kuritzkes and directed by Luca Guadagnino, was in the middle of pre-production in the UK and had started assembling its cast.

We now have additional updates from the trades, starting with The Hollywood Reporter. One insider tells them that "it came down to the project's scheduling needs of shooting outdoors." Deadline, meanwhile, explains, "shooting this summer was untenable, as the team would have had to rush through prep to hit the right weather conditions at the right time."

The UK weather is inconsistent at best, but it's only May, and it's not really until late October/early November that the country starts looking particularly autumnal and then wintery. With that in mind, it's hard to buy into this explanation.

The Hollywood Reporter shares another possible explanation by revealing, "Another source raised the possibility...

Luca Guadagnino’s DC Studios Sgt. Rock Movie No Longer Going Ahead
Image
In an altogether unexpected turn of events, it looks like Sgt. Rock is being discharged before he's even hit the battlefield. Yes, just two months after DC Studios head honchos James Gunn and Peter Safran confirmed plans for a Luca Guadagnino Sgt. Rock movie during their most recent Dcu slate reshuffle, THR is reporting that the project, which was just entering pre-production ahead of a planned summer shoot, is no longer going ahead.

The first whispers of Guadagnino making a pivot into comic book movie territory came late last November, when we reported that the Italian auteur was looking to team up with Queer star Daniel Craig and writer Justin Kuritzkes to bring the hero from the 1950s' war comics boom to the big screen. In March, following the movie's formal announcement by Gunn and Safran, we learned that Craig wouldn't be kitting up after all, but that The Penguin...

DC Studios’ ‘Sgt. Rock’ with Luca Guadagnino Directing On Hold
Image
DC Studios is putting “Sgt. Rock,” a DC Comics adaptation that was meant to be directed by Luca Guadagnino and star Colin Farrell, on hold for the time being, a source told IndieWire.

The project was in the midst of pre-production and casting and was plotting a shoot in England for this summer, but the source told IndieWire that a summer start for “Sgt. Rock” would’ve been untenable. The film hopes to shoot on location in England and would require summer daylight hours, according to the source, so postponing to the winter would not have been ideal for cast or crew. The film is hoping to find a new start date next summer.

It’s unclear if director Guadagnino or Farrell would still be involved come summer of 2026. Guadagnino specifically is busy with several other projects, including his upcoming film for Amazon and MGM called “After the Hunt” and...

DC Studios Delays 'Sgt. Rock' Film From Luca Guadagnino & Colin Farrell; Reportedly Not Canceled

Sgt. Rock seemed to have been cut down before it even got into the fray at DC Studios. Reports suggested that despite recruitingThe Penguin star Colin Farrell for the lead role, the company had decided not to move forward with the production due to unforeseen hiccups.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, DC Studios was not moving forward with Luca Guadagnino's Sgt. Rock with Colin Farrell in the titular role. However, it has since been suggested by multiple sources, including Deadline, that this is not the case, and instead there is a chance that the film will still set cameras rolling next summer instead of this year so it has more time to prepare. Challengers star Mike Faist was said to be locked in for a supporting role, while an actress had been courted for a starring part alongside Farrell. Check out the plot description, per THR:

The insider said that the reportedly $70 million-budgeted project is not going away, and will be...

DC’s ‘Sgt. Rock’ Movie, From Luca Guadagnino, No Longer in Development
Image
DC Studios’ “Sgt. Rock” is going on leave — but it may not be permanent.

The World War II picture, which “Queer” and “Challengers” director Luca Guadagnino was aiming to direct starring Colin Farrell, is no longer in development at the studio, Variety has confirmed. But the reasons aren’t creative: According to a knowledgable source, the need for exterior location shooting in the U.K. required a summer start date that the production couldn’t make, and filming in the winter was a non-starter. So the studio has put the project on hold with the hope that it can start up again in 2026, though Guadagnino’s continued involvement remains unclear.

DC Studios co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran were keen on making “Sgt. Rock” on the strength of the screenplay by frequent Guadagnino screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes, seeing the movie as a period adventure film rather than a classic comic book superhero flick.

Luca Guadagnino's 'Sgt. Rock' Movie Cancelled at DC Studios
Image
It’s been just over a month since it was reported that Colin Farrell would star in the Dcu’s Sgt. Rock movie from Luca Guadagnino, but now things have come to a screeching halt. THR is reporting that Sgt. Rock is no longer moving forward before it ever began production. James Gunn mentioned during a DC event earlier this year with Collider in attendance that there had been some trouble getting the project off the ground. THR also included in their report that Mike Faist, who previously starred in Challengers for Guadagnino, was also in talks to star in the project. It was in pre-production in England and was planning to begin shooting this summer. It’s unclear at the time why the project was scrapped, but it’s the first under Gunn to receive the ax.

Before Colin Farrell signed on for Sgt. Rock, it was Daniel Craig...

An Anticipated Upcoming DC Film Just Got Cancelled, Here's What We Know
Image
Sgt. Rock and the men of Easy Company will not have their story told in the DC Universe. DC Studios has scrapped the action war movie, which was already in pre-production ahead of its planned summer shoot in England.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, with Colin Farrell set to play the titular World War II soldier, Sgt. Rock was in the middle of casting the rest of Easy Company, as well as a female French resistance fighter, when DC Studios decided to pull the plug on the project. While it's unclear who might have been eyed to play the resistance fighter, Challengers star Mike Faist was reportedly lined up for a role in the DC Universe, which would have reunited him with director Luca Guadagnino.

Justin Kuritzkes, who penned Guadagnino’s Challengers and Queer, wrote the screenplay for Sgt. Rock, which would have taken place during World War II, following "Rock...

‘Sgt. Rock’ Halts Pre-Production, Now Eyeing Summer 2026 Production Start
Image
Sgt. Rock, DC’s superhero flick to team Luca Guadagnino and The Penguin‘s Colin Farrell, has halted production plans, sources have confirmed to Deadline.

While the film was supposed to enter production in the coming months, we’re now told it’ll look to shoot next summer. Studio insiders said that ultimately, shooting this summer was untenable, as the team would have had to rush through prep to hit the right weather conditions at the right time. The film is being shot primarily on location in the U.K. and shooting exteriors in the dead of winter would not have been optimal conditions for cast, crew and equipment.

The Sgt. Rock news comes as a shock as the film was greenlit months ago with a $65 million budget and plan to shoot this August. Sources close to the project say Guadagnino was scouting locations last week and that the studio...

DC Studios’ Luca Guadagnino Movie ‘Sgt. Rock’ Not Moving Forward
Image
The battle is over even before it even began for World War II soldier Sgt. Rock.

Sgt. Rock, DC Studios’ action war movie based that was to shoot this summer, will no longer move forward, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

The feature project, with Luca Guadagnino in the director’s chair, had Colin Farrell as the titular DC Comics hero and was in preproduction as it planned a shoot in England.

It was also in the throes of casting, trying to line up actors who would play the men of Easy Company, the combat unit fighting Nazi forces in Europe. Sources say Mike Faist, who starred in Guadagnino’s Challengers, was lined up for a role. The role of a female French Resistance fighter had also been set, per sources.

It is unclear why the project has been shut down, although an insider said it came down to the project...

Luca Guadagnino’s DC Movie ‘Sgt. Rock’ Scrapped | Exclusive
Image
Well, there’s one less soldier on the DC Studios battlefield.

“Sgt. Rock,” to be directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by his “Challengers” and “Queer” collaborator Justin Kuritzkes, is no longer moving forward at DC Studios, TheWrap has exclusively learned. Colin Farrell, already a part of the DC Comics universe thanks to his role as The Penguin in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” and the HBO spinoff series “The Penguin,” was in talks to play the title character after Daniel Craig dropped out.

The issue, one insider noted, came down to scheduling. The film, which would require a lot of exterior shoots, needed to start production this summer and wasn’t going to make its date. Budget didn’t appear to be an issue — it was meant to come in under $70 million, which for a high-priority comic book adaptation, is a bargain.

DC Studios had no comment.

The character, a...

Getting Practical with Screenwriting: Lessons from Luca Guadagnino
Image
Luca Guadagnino is a loyal collaborator. He’s worked with Timothée Chalamet and Dakota Johnson twice, Tilda Swinton four times, but the people he’s worked with most frequently are his screenwriters. Over the years, IndieWire has spoken multiple times with Guadagnino’s go-tos, David Kajganich and Justin Kuritzkes, each time learning more about what it takes to collaborate with one of cinema’s most respected and revered filmmakers.

Kajganich is known for penning Guadagnino’s adaptations of “A Bigger Splash,” “Suspiria,” and “Bones and All,” while Kuritzkes wrote “Challengers” as a spec script, prompting the filmmaker to later ask him to help conceive the screenplay for the William S. Burroughs-inspired “Queer.” Keep reading below to find out the lessons they learned working with the subversive, yet alluring creative.

Research, Then Adapt

In a 2018 interview with IndieWire’s Jamie Righetti, Kajganich said his reimagining Dario Argento’s giallo classic “Suspiria” began with facts,...

Will Colin Farrell Playing Sgt. Rock Affect The Batman Part II? Here's The Latest On Long-Delayed Sequel
Image
Yesterday afternoon, the news broke that The Penguin star Colin Farrell is in talks to play the title character in DC Studios' Sgt. Rock movie. Daniel Craig had been eyed by filmmaker Luca Guadagnino for his next feature but ultimately passed.

That wouldn't be the first time the former 007 has missed out on a superhero role as he was supposed to suit up as Thor's brother, Balder, in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' Illuminati sequence.

Back to Farrell, and the response to him pulling double duty in the Dcu as Sgt. Rock and The Penguin in Matt Reeves' Bat-verse has been a little mixed. There have also been questions about whether this casting will have an impact on The Batman Part II, a movie many believe will never happen at this rate.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sgt. Rock is expected to shoot in England this summer.

Colin Farrell Eyeing Lead Role In Luca Guadagnino’s Sgt. Rock Movie At DC Studios
Image
Last month, DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed a rejigged release slate for their burgeoning new cinematic universe, teasing everything from Mike Flanagan's Clayface movie to a live-action Teen Titans joint. During the presentation, Gunn also confirmed that a long-since whispered about Luca Guadagnino Sgt. Rock film is indeed in the works over at the Dcu — and that the feature could shoot this summer "if [they] find the perfect actor." And lo and behold, it looks like Gunn and Safran have found their man. According to Deadline, none other than The Penguin himself, Colin Farrell, is being lined up to play DC's eponymous Nazi fighting war hero.

Now, we know what you're thinking: "How can Colin Farrell be DC's Sgt. Rock when he's already DC's Penguin?" Well, technically Colin Farrell is DC Elseworlds' Penguin, meaning his Oz Cobb belongs to a standalone pocket of the DC Universe...

Colin Farrell Will Star In One Of James Gunn's DC Universe Movies (But Not As The Penguin)
Image
If at first you don't succeed with one name-brand actor, well, just try again with another. For some reason, DC has been trying to make comic book character Sgt. Rock happen for quite some time now. Early reports date back to the early 2000s, first with Arnold Schwarzenegger attached for the role of the gruff title character before director Guy Ritchie began circling the project in 2008. The WWII soldier ended up on the backburner when those plans fell apart over the years, only to get resurrected in the most bizarre (but strangely compelling) way imaginable. When last we heard, none other than "Queer" filmmaker Luca Guadagnino and actor Daniel Craig were set to reunite on -- and lend their combined star power to -- a "Sgt. Rock" film under James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios. If that seemed too good to be true, well, that's exactly what it...

Colin Farrell in Talks To Join Dcu in Luca Guadagnino's 'Sgt. Rock' Film
Image
DC Studios has recruited Colin Farrell once again, but it's not for The Penguin. It's being reported that the award-winning star of the HBO drama is joining James Gunn's DC Universe as one of the canon's lesser-known superheroes. Despite already being featured in one of DC's most high-profile and well-received projects in recent memory, Farrell sets his sights on a creative collaboration for the ages. The project has been in and out of development for decades, but Sgt. Rock is finally ready to make his big-screen debut.

According to Deadline, Colin Farrell is in talks to join Luca Guadagnino's Sgt. Rock, an action period piece set during World War II. After Daniel Craig pulled out of the starring role, it seems the studio moved quickly to attach another actor, this time someone familiar with the superhero genre. Farrell will now be starring in both Gunn's Dcu and...

The script is written by Justin Kuritzkes, who previously wrote “Challengers” and “Queer” for Guadagnino. The film is expected to be a period piece set during World War II.

Sgt. Rock is one of DC Comics’ most famous military characters and is the leader of Easy Company. Created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, he first appeared in 1959’s “Our Army at War” before getting his own series in 1977 that ran for 11 years.

Daniel Craig was previously circling the role, but never got an offer according to DC Studio chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran. DC Studios is planning to shoot the movie this summer in the United Kingdom.

Colin Farrell in Talks to Star in ‘Sgt. Rock’ From DC and Luca Guadagnino
Image
Colin Farrell may be double-dipping in the DC Universe. “The Penguin” star is circling the lead in “Sgt. Rock,” a comic book adaptation from Luca Guadagnino.

Daniel Craig was eyed for the role, but the actor never formally committed to the movie before he dropped out of consideration in February.

In the comics, Sgt. Rock is a World War II hero and combat fighter. There have been attempts to bring the character to the screen over the years with actors like Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, but those films never came to pass.

This attempt is expected to begin shooting this summer in England. Justin Kuritzkes, who previously wrote “Challengers” and “Queer” for Guadagnino, is penning the “Sgt. Rock” screenplay. The new movie is being developed under DC’s leadership team of James Gunn and Peter Safran. The duo has described the adaptation as a straightforward war film and view...

Colin Farrell in Talks to Lead Major DC Studios Film (& It Has Nothing to Do With Penguin)
Image
Actor Colin Farrell may soon be playing another DC Comics character after drawing high acclaim for his role in The Penguin. The possible casting would also help further test the actor's range, as it's a role that is far unlike the Batman villain.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Farrell is in talks to star in Sgt. Rock, a World War II action movie in the works at DC Studios. Luca Guadagnino is on board to direct the Justin Kuritzkes-penned film, and there were recent reports that he'd be reuniting with Queer actor Daniel Craig as the star. However, Craig reportedly left the project, which was followed by rumors that The Bear star Jeremy Allen White had also turned down the role.

DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran teased back in February that the project would only move forward with production this summer as planned if they "find the perfect actor.

Colin Farrell in Talks to Star in ‘Sgt. Rock’ for DC Studios
Image
Colin Farrell, who waddled his way to considerable acclaim for his work as a classic DC villain in The Penguin, is in negotiations to return to the world of DC with Sgt. Rock, the World War II action movie to be directed by Luca Guadagnino for DC Studios.

The move comes after Daniel Craig, who circled the feature project, officially stepped away and is now entertaining a role in Greta Gerwig and Netflix’s take on Narnia. No offer was ever made to Craig, DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran said in February. At the time, they said the project would shoot this summer “only if we find the perfect actor.”

The move indeed puts Rock on track for a shoot this summer in DC Studios’ production hub in England.

If a deal makes, Farrell would play the tough-as-nails leader of Easy Company, the combat unit fighting Nazi forces in Europe.

Colin Farrell Circling Luca Guadagnino & DC’s ‘Sgt. Rock’
Image
Exclusive: After winning practically every single award out there for his turn in The Penguin, Colin Farrell is looking to get back in business with DC: and that’s to star in the title role of Luca Guadagnino’s Sgt. Rock.

Note, this is a different part of the DC-verse, with The Penguin attached to Matt Reeves’ The Batman sphere, whereas Sgt. Rock is part of DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran’s oversee. The two worlds shall never overlap.

Scheduling for the film, which Farrell wants to do, we hear, has to be balanced with his busy fall that includes the second season of Apple TV+’s Sugar and Edward Berger’s movie The Ballad of a Small Player.

Farrell takes over for Daniel Craig, who was originally kicking the tires to reteam with Guadagnino after they made Queer.

Farrell will play Sgt. Franklin John Rock in the World War II-set movie.
