Following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, where it was acquired by Sony Pictures Classics, Daniel Minahan’s adaptation of Shannon Pufahl’s 2019 novel “On Swift Horses” will be released in the U.S. on April 25, 2025.

The film is set during the 1950s and stars Will Poulter as a returning Korean War vet, Lee, who decides to make a new life for himself and his wife, Muriel (Daisy Edgar-Jones), in California. This plan is challenged when Lee’s brother, Julius (Jacob Elordi) — also a vet — decides to join them out west. After missing out on playing Glinda in Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked,” Amanda Seyfried is teaming up with the makers of another buzzy 2024 film for a musical: “The Brutalist” co-writer Mona Fastvold directs the musical “Ann Lee,” which she wrote with “Brutalist” co-writer and director, and her partner, Brady Corbet.

Seyfried stars in the title role in the historical film, which shot in Hungary right after “The Brutalist” and features original songs by Golden Globe-nominated “The Brutalist” composer Daniel Blumberg. Choreography comes from Celia Rowlson Hall, the dancer who played the adult Sophie in “Aftersun.” The secret indie film has already wrapped production and is looking for a 2025 premiere, with sales and distribution yet to be set. Exclusive: The team behind seven-time Golden Globe nominee The Brutalist have been quietly working on a starry musical called Ann Lee, which has now wrapped, with Oscar nominee Amanda Seyfried (Mank) in the lead role.

Mona Fastvold (The World To Come), Golden Globe-nominated co-writer of The Brutalist, serves as director, co-screenwriter, and producer. Venice Silver Lion winner Brady Corbet co-wrote with his Brutalist collaborator and partner, Fastvold. Golden Globe-nominated composer Daniel Blumberg (The Brutalist) wrote and produced the original music.

The film, inspired by real events, is described to us as “an epic fable” about religious leader Ann Lee, the founding leader of the Shaker Movement, who was proclaimed by her followers as the female Christ and went on to build one of the largest utopian societies in American history. Lee–one of the rare female religious heads at the time– and her followers worshipped through exuberant song and dance.

The drama from debut director Aristotle Torres was a prizewinner at SXSW.

Kino Lorber has acquired North American rights to SXSW prizewinner Story Ave, debut feature of music video director Aristotle Torres.

Kino Lorber has acquired North American rights to the indie drama Story Ave, starring Asante Blackk (This Is Us) and Luis Guzmán (Wednesday) — which we were first to report on — slating it for release in theaters in October, with a on digital and home video debut to follow.

Marking the feature debut of well-known music video director Aristotle Torres, the film tells the story of Kadir (Blackk), a South Bronx teen and gifted visual artist who loses his way following the death of his younger brother. Overcome with grief and struggling with school and family, he escapes into the creative yet dangerous world of graffiti gangs. To prove himself and join his neighborhood’s ruling gang, Kadir attempts to rob Mta conductor Luis (Guzmán) on the Story Ave subway platform, only to be caught off guard when Luis agrees to give Kadir the cash if he’ll sit down to a meal with him.

From debut filmmaker Aristotle Torres, “Story Ave” stars Luis Guzmán and Asante Blackk, with Guzmán serving as executive producer alongside producer Jamie Foxx.

“Story Ave” follows teenage graffiti artist, Kadir Grayson (Blackk) who recently ran away from home and tries to prove himself to his neighborhood gang. One night Kadir heads over to the Story Ave. subway platform and attempts to hold up Mta worker Luis Torres (Guzmán) in a robbery. But once Luis proposes he’ll hand over the cash if Kadir has a meal with him, the two get to know each other throughout the meal, and with time their connection turns into growing and sincere friendship.

“’Story Ave’ is a New York story unlike any we’ve seen before,” said Wendy Lidell, Kino Lorber SVP of theatrical distribution and acquisitions.

Daisy-Edgar Jones, Jacob Elordi, Diego Calva, Will Poulter and Sasha Calle are on board for a star-studded adaptation of the historical drama “On Swift Horses.”

Based on Shannon Pufahl’s novel of the same name, the film centers on couple Muriel (Edgar-Jones) and Lee (Poulter), who look to rebuild their life together after he returns from the Korean War. A love triangle emerges after Lee’s brother, Julius (Elordi), a charismatic gambler with a secret, joins their plan to move to California. When Julius decamps for Las Vegas instead, Muriel embarks on her own secret life of gambling on racehorses. Calva will play a character named Henry, while Calle will play Sandra.

Daniel Minahan will helm from a script by Bryce Kass (“Lizzie”). Production is underway in Los Angeles.

Exclusive: Asante Blackk (When They See Us) and Luis Guzmán (Traffic) have been tapped as the leads for Aristotle Torres’ feature directorial debut Story Ave, for FirstGen Content and Jamie Foxx’s Foxxhole Productions. The film, which has wrapped production in New York, will also star Alex Hibbert (Moonlight), Melvin Gregg (Nine Perfect Strangers), Cassandra Freeman (Monsters and Men) and Coral Peña (For All Mankind).

Roadside Attractions has scooped up the U.S. rights to “Call Jane,” the period piece abortion drama that stars Elizabeth Banks and made its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this year.

Phyllis Nagy (“Carol”) directed the film that also stars Sigourney Weaver. Roadside is planning a theatrical release for the film this fall.

“Call Jane” is set in Chicago in 1968 and follows a suburban housewife named Joy who has a life-threatening heart condition as a result of her pregnancy and finds an all-male medical establishment is unwilling to assist in her abortion. Her journey for a solution leads her to two women who are committed to women’s health and have the dream of giving all women access to abortions, and together they form an underground abortion service for women that puts every aspect of her own life on the line.

“Catch the Fair One,” a critically acclaimed thriller from Josef Kubota Wladyka (“Narcos”) starring real-life professional boxer Kali “K.O.” Reis, has been sold to major markets by Paris-based Memento International (“Call Me By Your Name”).

“Catch the Fair One” opened at Tribeca Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award and a Special Jury mention for Reis’ performance.

IFC Films has picked up US rights from The Film Sales Company to Josef Kubota Wladyka’s Tribeca Festival winner Catch The Fair One and plans a 2022 release.

Wladyka wrote the screenplay to his second feature from a story he developed with the film’s star and professional boxer Kali “K.O.” Reis, who plays an Indigenous former boxer that sets out to save her missing sister when she learns her sibling is possibly circulating in a trafficking network.

IFC Films has acquired U.S. rights to “Catch the Fair One,” a thriller from “Narcos” director Josef Kubota Wladyka that stars real-life professional boxer, Kali “K.O.” Reis. The deal comes after “Catch the Fair One” debuted at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival, where it received warm reviews and captured the Audience Award and a Special Jury mention for Reis’ performance.

It was a role that Reis helped develop in conjunction with Wladyka, who wrote the screenplay based on a story she created. And it’s also a film that drew on her experiences as the first Indigenous fighter to win the International Boxing Association middleweight crown and the reigning Wba Super lightweight champion.
