Phil Collins Says He Can No Longer Play Drums Due to Health Issues

Phil Collins is sharing a sad update about his health.

The 73-year-old music icon confirmed in Phil Collins: Drummer First, a documentary released on December 18, that he can no longer play the drums.

“I’ve spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock,” he admitted.

Phil explained that after playing drums in concert with Genesis for five decades and on solo tours since the ‘80s, his hands and legs have been affected to the point that he had to retire from drumming in March 2022 after his last performance with his band.

“If I can’t do what I did as well as I did it, I’d rather relax and not do anything,” he said.

“If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I’ll have a crack at it.

Despite his status as one of the best selling music artists in the world, Phil Collins is, first and formost, a drummer. He says as much in new documentary Drummer First, which premieres on the Drumeo YouTube channel next week.

Genesis are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their 1974 opus, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, with a Super Deluxe Edition featuring a remastered version of the double LP, a new Dolby Atmos mix, a complete 1975 concert from the Lamb tour, three unheard demos, and a 60-page coffee table book with liner notes by Alexis Petridis. It will hit shelves on March 28, 2025.

2015 Boston Underground Film Festival: Official Lineup
The 17th annual Boston Underground Film Festival is set to explode all over the Brattle Theater in Harvard Square on March 25-29.

Opening Night: The fun kicks off on the 25th at 7:30 p.m. with the exciting new flick from the always amazing Astron-6 collective, The Editor, an homage to the brutal Giallo movies of the ’70s and ’80s directed by Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy. This will be followed by the restored version of the legendary cult classic Gone With the Pope by the notorious Duke Mitchell.

The Gist: A narrative short film, focusing on a transformative period in Ernest Hemingway’s life. Based on historic findings, the film will depict time Hemingway spent in the Michigan wilderness, and how this experience shaped his identity.

Why It Should Be Kickstarted: Perhaps the most alluring line of their pitch video is when actor Nic Collins states, “In this film, we see Hemingway become the man he writes about.” That’s a tall order to fill, but an exciting one as well.
