The docu-series will take Wade on "journeys beneath the water in remote areas, to islands lost in time and out into the open ocean to investigate reports that include, among others, entire fish species suddenly disappearing; unexplained sightings of mythical beasts; once thriving rivers now empty; and genetic oddities that may have produced the biggest monsters yet."

Former “River Monsters” host Jeremy Wade is coming home to Animal Planet to lead a brand new series, “Jeremy Wade’s Dark Waters,” the cable network said Friday.

After leaving the cable channel in 2017 following a nine-season run as host of “River Monsters,” the famous biologist will return “in a captivating new series that brings him back to the water’s edge to investigate reports of the unimaginable and unexplained.”

I’m a huge “Piranha” fan, and I’ll watch anything (anything that is!) pertaining to lake horror. Hockey masked killers, prehistoric monsters, government altered mutated fish, toxic waste mutated marine life and even zombies, are all enhanced when set at a lake. It’s in a more confined space than the ocean, there’s usually plenty of expendable characters getting their vacation on to up the body count, and it makes one think twice that fresh water is absolutely, positively safe.

The "River Monsters" finale saw Jeremy Wade go after one of the most-famous mythological creatures: the Loch Ness Monster. However, the search took Wade to Norway and put the Greenland Shark into his crosshairs.

According to Wade, the Greenland Shark could have been mistaken for the Loch Ness Monster since it's not your typical shark -- it's dark and has a small dorsal fin, hunts in deep, dark water and only occasionally surfaces. According to the Discovery Channel, "If something looks like food ... this shark will gobble it down. Some Greenland shark stomachs have contained pieces of horses and polar bears. One shark even consumed an entire reindeer, antlers and all.”

Discovery Channel’s “Shark Week” has long been one of my favorite things to watch during the summer. It usually appeals to that part of me that is a biosciences nerd. River Monsters and Jeremy Wade returned to Animal Planet tonight with a scary sounding episode titled Face Ripper. It began as a simple whodunnit or should that be WHATdunnit, after an unfortunate Bolivian was pulled from a river sans face. The doctor who conducted the autopsy on the man believed his wounds were consistent with piranha bites but Jeremy Wade wasn’t so sure having previously done his best to prove that the little fish are scavengers rather than killers. However, as the investigation progressed the evidence began to mount up and numerous locals insisted that black piranhas had been savaging anything and everything that passed through the river including stacks of fish and at least one rather fine looking white horse.

Animal Planet’s intrepid traveler Jeremy Wade returns to the network on Sunday 7 April in River Monsters season 5. Over the course of the new series, Wade will travel the globe in search of the rarest water dwellers known to man. Jeremy kindly agreed to give Best British TV an insight into the adventures he had while filming the new episodes.

The first episode involves a Bolivian fish called “The Face Ripper?” What can you tell me about this particular river monster?

“Every story on the show begins with an incident and this one was particularly horrific. About 18 months ago, a young Bolivian man dived into a river. He started having difficulties and then disappeared. Eventually, his body was pulled from the river but his face was gone. I saw photographs of the man and they were too gruesome to show on TV.
