“Fright Krewe” – Animated Series from Eli Roth and DreamWorks To Get Second Season
Image
DreamWorks Animation has delivered a Halloween treat: gateway horror series “Fright Krewe” has been renewed for a second season.

Look for the supernatural war brewing in New Orleans to continue when Season 2 comes to Hulu and Peacock in 2024.

“Fright Krewe” is Created and Executive Produced by Eli Roth & James Frey. The series is also Executive Produced by Joanna Lewis and Kristine Songco.

In the 10-episode series, ” An ancient prophecy and a Voodoo Queen put misfit teens in charge of saving New Orleans from the biggest demonic threat it’s faced in almost two centuries. But, honestly? Saving the world might be easier than becoming friends.”

The first season of 10 episodes recently debuted on Hulu and Peacock on October 2. In my review, I wrote that the inaugural season “offers enough supernatural charm, heart, and whimsy to endear Soleil and her friends to viewers, hoping to see their ascension to full hero in the future.

Review: DreamWorks' Fright Crewe is a Horror Take on a Formula
Image
Fright Crewe isn't the first all-ages horror story that Eli Roth has ever played with. While 2018’s The House with a Clock in Its Walls felt like Roth's take on a children's fable, Fright Crewe (which he created and executive produced with I Am Number Four author James Frey) takes more cues from the teenage supernatural genre -- at times operating like a fusion of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Power Rangers. Executive produced by Joanna Lewis and Kristine Songco, the series may not be breaking new ground, but Fright Crewe's colorful and creepy take on the premise delivers a fun show for older kids.

Fright Crewe focuses on five teenagers in New Orleans: outcast Soleil (voiced by Sydney Mikayala), her former best friend turned popular girl Missy (Grace Lu), Missy's dim-witted boyfriend Stanley (Chester Rushing), Vodou-obsessed Pat (Terrence Little Gardenhigh) and the quiet Maybe (Tim Johnson Jr.). Fright Krewe Showrunners on Collaborating with Eli Roth for Their Spooky New YA Series
Image
Just in time for Halloween, the fright-fest TV shows just keep coming! And that includes spooky series suited for younger audiences, too — even if Eli Roth is one of the co-creators. Sure, he's helmed some pretty horrifically violent films over the years (Hostel and the upcoming Thanksgiving) but he's also dabbled in kid-friendly material as well (The House with a Clock in Its Walls). More recently, he teamed up with best-selling author James Frey (A Million Little Pieces) to bring a new YA series to Hulu and Peacock this week. Fright Krewe centers on a wise-cracking group of misfit teens in New Orleans who, after a few accidental missteps around the wrong part of town, get caught up in saving their city from an ancient prophecy and evil Voodoo Queen.

Millennials may think of classic series like Recess and Are You Afraid of the Dark? when watching each episode, and that's a good thing.

Scooby-Doo & Goosebumps Were Major Influences For Eli Roth's New Horror Show: "There Was Nothing Scary For Our Kids"
Image
Fright Krewe draws inspiration from Scooby-Doo and Goosebumps to create a spooky animated series for kids and older viewers alike. Unlike Scooby-Doo, the show features real monsters instead of people in masks, leaning more towards the horror genre like Goosebumps. With a mix of humor and genuine scares, Fright Krewe has the potential to continue the legacies of both Scooby-Doo and Goosebumps for modern audiences.

As he expands his horror work to more family-friendly territory with Fright Krewe, Eli Roth explains how Scooby-Doo and Goosebumps inspired the show. Co-created by the genre vet and I Am Number Four author James Frey, the animated show centers on a group of New Orleans teens who inadvertently awaken an ancient demon and must use the special abilities granted to them by the mystical Loa to stop him. Produced by DreamWorks Animation, Fright Krewe marks a rare dual release across Hulu and Peacock in time for the Halloween season.

Fright Krewe Co-Creator Eli Roth Talks His Family-Friendly Horror Show & Authentically Depicting Voodoo
Image
Eli Roth and James Frey co-created Fright Krewe as a family-friendly animated horror show centered around a group of teens in New Orleans with special powers. The show has a colorful-yet-gothic animation style and combines heartwarming and terrifying storytelling, appealing to both younger viewers and horror enthusiasts. The creators aimed to authentically depict voodoo religion in a respectful manner and hope for the show's success to continue as a TV series and book series, ultimately leaving it in the hands of the viewers.

Eli Roth is returning to the world of family-friendly scares with Fright Krewe. Co-created by the genre vet and I Am Number Four author James Frey, the animated horror show centers on a group of teens in New Orleans who become imbued with special powers from mystical spirits known as Loa in order to combat the rise of the malevolent demon, Belial.

Eli Roth Finds the Fun Side of Horror in DreamWorks' Fright Krewe
Image
Created and Executive-Produced by Eli Roth and James Frey, Fright Krewe is DreamWorks' latest animated series. Focusing on an unlikely group of teenagers with mystical powers and a duty to stop an ancient evil from ripping apart New Orleans, Fright Krewe takes the classic adventure animation dynamics and infuses them with some of the frights and tension that Roth is most famous for. There are plenty of monsters and horrific images, but Roth maintains a consistently appealing edge to the central characters and their stories.

The result is a fun show that serves as a gateway for younger audiences to the horror genre. During an interview with Cbr, Eli Roth discussed how Fright Krewe draws from Voodoo mythology and figures, the importance of authenticity, taking inspiration from previous animated projects, and crafting a series that older horror fans can share with their children.

Fright Krewe: Eli Roth teams with James Frey and Dreamworks for gateway horror series
Image
Genre regular Eli Roth has another horror project coming our way – but this one won’t be nearly as brutal or bloody as the likes of Cabin Fever or Hostel. Instead, it’s some “gateway horror” entertainment that comes in the form of an animated series called Fright Krewe. Said to be aimed at “older children”, the first season of Fright Krewe will consist of ten episodes that will be released through both the Hulu and Peacock streaming services. A premiere date has not yet been announced.

The Wrap reports that Roth has teamed up with Dreamworks and author James Frey to bring this series to the screen – and they also point out that Frey is a rather controversial figure. His books A Million Little Pieces and My Friend Leonard were initially marketed as memoirs, but it was soon revealed that large portions of them were either exaggerated or made up.

Amazon Greenlights Five New Kids' Series Pilots
A preschool whodunit. A hilarious friendship between dirty trucks. An epic quest to defeat darkness. An ousted crowd who navigates middle school cafeteria dynamics. And a trio who discover the power of magic.

These are the five kids’ stories Amazon Studios has ordered to pilot, officially announced today. Early next year, all five will showcase their first episodes for viewer feedback on Amazon Instant Video.

During the last kids’ pilot season, one of the highest-rated pilots was Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street, which was created by pre-school teacher David Anaxagoras, a first-time writer who was discovered through Amazon Studios’ open-door submission process. In November, Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street will launch as a full series on Amazon Prime.

In a few months, viewers will have the chance to discover the next hit kids show. “We’re very excited to be working with such talented creative minds...
