It’s about to be another “One of Them Days,” as a sequel to the hit comedy starring Keke Palmer and Sza and produced by Issa Rae is in early development at TriStar Pictures.
Palmer and Sza are expected to return for the new movie, along with the film’s original creative team, but plot details are still being kept under wraps.
Directed by Lawrence Lamont in his feature debut and from a script written by Syreeta Singleton, “One of Them Days” was a breakout hit at the box office, grossing over $50 million worldwide after its January release — a particularly strong number for an R-rated mid-budget comedy. The critically acclaimed movie (with a stellar 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes) was also a standout on Netflix, where it spent three weeks on the streamer’s top 10 list.

The Lion King is famous for all sorts of good reasons; firstly, it's a fantastic story; secondly, it has a killer soundtrack; and, thirdly, it can appeal to all ages. The 1994 film became the foundation for modern pop culture, and with its wonderful story and emotionally powerful tunes, there’s a reason Simba and Co. have remained King.
Unfortunately for the lion of the rock, eventually every king gets dethroned and that’s more than a repeated fact for Simba’s dad. And whilst overall, it seems Sonic 3 will beat Mufasa, for the Martin Luther King Day weekend box office, the one-day crown almost passed from Mufasa to One of Them Days.

For a day with a hard and stressful deadline, Tristar’s One of Them Days starring music artist Sza and Keke Palmer has a soundtrack that reduces stress and emphasizes the comedy of the film.
The premise hinges on Palmer’s Dreux and Sza’s Alyssa, two roommates who find themselves scrambling for rent money when Alyssa’s boyfriend Keshawn (Joshua David Neal) took their original payment to try out a creative endeavor. “One of Them Days,” starring Keke Palmer and Sza as fast-talking, flat-broke Los Angeles roommates who have nine hours to come up with the rent money, is a winning throwback to the kind of day-in-the-hood comedy they used to make in the ’90s — movies like “Friday” (1995) and “The Players Club” (1998), which squeezed just enough texture in between the laughs to qualify as crowd-pleasing slices of life. These movies, usually produced by New Line, were the descendants of “House Party” and Spike Lee (notably the exuberant opening 45 minutes of “Do the Right Thing”), though they were also a counterreaction to the dramas of inner-city violence that had dominated commercial Black cinema during the first half of the ’90s. To that genre, they offered a counterbalance of raunchy, scuzzy corkscrew humanity, teaching the movie industry a lesson — about the place where diversity meets commerce — that it seems to need to keep learning over and over again.

Comedies are hard to come by these days. They’re practically non-existent — a reality I’m quite bitter about because who doesn’t like to laugh? — or, if they do exist, are just plain bad. So I was surprised that One of Them Daysmanaged to get made at all. The film, directed by Lawrence Lamont from a screenplay by Syreeta Singleton, is a throwback buddy comedy we don’t see much of. While that occasionally works against it, One of Them Days is fun and delightfully absurd. Keke Palmer and Sza are great together and it’s their chemistry and interactions that largely work.
One of Them Days, directed by Lawrence Lamont, follows best friends and roommates Dreux and Alyssa as they scramble to prevent eviction after discovering Alyssa's boyfriend has squandered their rent money. This comedic adventure highlights their desperate and humorous attempts to save their home and friendship.

There is a moment early on in the new movie “One of Them Days” where you are treated to the full range of what Keke Palmer’s face can do. Playing Dreux, a waitress in a crisis over one Los Angeles day, she is caught off guard when her crush Maniac (Patrick Cage) enters a room. Her eyes dart side to side, eyeing him up, but with the nerves of someone about to melt. When he speaks to her, her normal loquaciousness disappears as she babbles about honey buns. It’s a masterclass in turning small moments into big comedy.
Throughout the very funny film directed by Lawrence Lamont and written by Syreeta Singleton, you are treated time and time again to the brilliance of Palmer — how she can transform any bit of dialogue into a laugh line, or make her eyes glimmer with gags. Yes, the movie marks the...

The team behind Rap Sh!t is weighing in after news broke Thursday that Max canceled the comedy series following a two-season run.
Created by Issa Rae, Rap Sh!t starred Aida Osman (Shawna) and KaMillion (Mia) as two friends who reconnect in Miami and form a rap duo. The show’s second season launch was delayed to November 2023 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, with the season finale debuting Dec. 21.
“A real ass group of people,” showrunner Syreeta Singleton captioned an Instagram post that featured video of the show’s writing staff. “The best writers room ever. I will cherish this experience forever and ever. #seduceandscheme for life.”
Among those commenting on the post was co-star Daisy Fernandez (Peaches), who wrote, “Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this incredible show. I am forever grateful to y’all! I can’t wait to see what amazing things you do next.

After working with Pardi on what the duo thinks could be their next hit, Singleton notes that they are drawn to the access provided by Francios’ connections,...

Working in movies isn’t just a dream for Mandela Van Peebles -- it’s practically his birthright, given that he's the son of Mario Van Peebles ("Ali," "New Jack City") and the grandson of Melvin Van Peebles, the "godfather of black cinema," whose revolutionary 1971 film "Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song" remains one of the highest-grossing indie films ever made.
Just as Melvin cast Mario in his films, Mario cast the 17-year-old Mandela to star in "We the Party," a multicultural teen comedy that attempts to fill the gaping hole "House Party" left in 1990. The multi-talented Mario also coproduced music videos for two soundtrack singles by Mvp Boyz, a rap duo he formed with his brother Makaylo; and he's hard at work on his directorial debut, the short film "Flipped,...
