Directed by Christopher M. Book's Books is now open for business. The first trailer has just been released for Bookish, the much-anticipated British cozy crime drama from Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss, and it introduces a new, unconventional detective stepping in to help the police solve cases. In addition to creating the series, Gatiss stars as Gabriel Book, an antiquarian bookshop owner in 1946 post-war London who brings his knowledge from his extensive collection of books to offer a different angle on crime. Despite the danger, he dives headfirst into mystery with a system for solving murders that makes him the go-to guy for answers. Consisting of six episodes, the series is slated to air on UKTV's U&Alibi later this year.

Emmy-nominated Isaacs is best known for his recent starring role as troubled financier Timothy Ratliff in the third season of The White Lotus. His comedy credits include The Death of Stalin, Friends With Money and Sex Education. He has also appeared in Peter Pan, Hotel Mumbai, The Great and The Patriot. Audiences will know him as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films. Isaacs stars opposite Gillian Anderson in The Salt Path, released in U.K. theaters last month.

From writer/director Charlotte Serena Cooper, the film is billed as a “bold takedown of outdated LGBTQ+ tropes in film and TV mixed with dark comedy that satirises the harmful cinematic tradition of the same name.”

“Bury Your Gays” will be led by Jude Mack and T’Nia Miller. Miller — a long-time advocate for better queer representation on screen — also serves as an executive producer.

Penelope Wilton (Downton Abbey), Walliams (Little Britain), Richard Roxburgh (Elvis), Robyn Nevin (Sting) and Blake Harrison (The Inbetweeners) will also star alongside newcomer Iona Bell.

The best selling children’s book Fing is getting the feature film treatment, courtesy of Sky. More on the project below.

Word has reached the Film Stories news desk that Sky is adapting the 2019 children’s book Fing into a feature film. The film is set to be released as a Sky Original and filming is currently underway in Brisbane, Australia.

Fing will be directed by Jeffrey Walker while author David Walliams is co-writing the script with Kevin Cecil.

The project has also attracted quite a number of Hollywood stars. Taika Waititi, Mia Wasikowska, Penelope Wilton, Robyn Nevin, Blake Harrison and newcomer Iona Bell are all set to star in Fing.

He created and stars in the upcoming series as Gabriel Book, an eccentric bookshop owner and expert sleuth who helps the police solve tricky cases. The show has contained stories – one crime plays out over two episodes – and there are lighthearted elements and something comforting about the cluttered antiquarian bookshop, situated in a picture-perfect historic London lane. Colin Callender’s Playground will adapt Georges Simenon’s best-selling detective novels “Maigret” into a television series set to air in the U.S. on PBS under the “Masterpiece” banner.

The adaptation of the streetwise Parisian Chief Inspector Jules Maigret has started production in Budapest. Callender and David Stern will executive produce for Playground.

A new iteration of one of the most beloved detectives in fiction is coming to PBS.

The public broadcaster has ordered Maigret, a series based on Georges Simenon’s novels about Jules Maigret, a chief inspector for the Paris police. The long-gestating TV adaptation of Georges Simenon’s Maigret has landed at PBS Masterpiece, with Belgravia: The Next Chapter’s Benjamin Wainwright and Stefanie Martini (Prime Suspect 1973) playing the eponymous leads.

From Colin Callender’s Wolf Hall producer Playground, the series follows the detective and his wife in Paris. Maigret is a rising star in the Police Judiciaire, relentless in his investigations, with an uncanny ability to get under the skin of the criminals he is chasing and a matchless knowledge of Paris and its inhabitants. Lead Wainwright played Lord Frederick Trenchard in MGM+ sequel series Belgravia: The Next Chapter, which followed on from Julian Fellowes’ original.

Patrick Harbinson is writing Maigret and the cast includes Blake Harrison, Reda Elazouar, Kerrie Hayes, Shaniqua Okwok and Rob Kazinsky, with Nathalie Armin set to play Prosecutor Mathilde Kernavel.

The Maigret books are the second best-selling detective series of all time behind Sherlock. Playground licensed them from Georges Simenon Limited and unveiled the development three years ago, at which point Red Arrow Studios International – which is no longer attached – was co-producing. Banijay Rights has since boarded and will sell globally.

The previous Maigret TV adaptation aired on ITV for two seasons from 2016, starring Rowan Atkinson.

Playground Joint MD David Stern said: “George Simenon’s creation of Jules Maigret holds a firm place in the pantheon of great literary detectives and we are incredibly grateful to our partners and John Simenon for their trust and support as we endeavor to bring a contemporary Maigret to a new, worldwide audience.”

Harbinson will direct the first two episodes of the Maigret series with Faye Gilbert directing 3 and 4, and David Evans taking 5 and 6. Susanne Simpson serves as the executive producer on behalf of Masterpiece the lead commissioning broadcaster, with John Simenon executive producing on behalf of Georges Simenon Limited. International distribution will be handled by Banijay Rights, the global sales arm of Banijay Entertainment.

Playground has been busy of late. The indie has completed the second in the Wolf Hall franchise, also for Masterpiece and the BBC, and is working on an Inspector Lynley Mysteries adaptation for BritBox International.

First airing on Channel 4 in 2008, The Inbetweeners followed four unlikely friends as they navigated the highs and low of Sixth Form education (the U.K. equivalent of 12th grade). Joe Thomas, the actor known for portraying Simon Cooper on the popular British comedy series “The Inbetweeners,” has indicated there could be another film featuring the show’s characters. In a recent podcast appearance, Thomas said he would be open to reuniting with his co-stars for a possible third movie installment.

While speaking on the “Always Be Comedy” podcast, Thomas expressed that he remains close with James Buckley, Simon Bird, and Blake Harrison, the actors who played his friends on the sitcom. According to Thomas, the cast enjoys working together and would consider collaborating again under the right circumstances. He proposed a “stag do,” or British bachelor party, as an engaging plotline that could bring the characters back together years after the original series.

Thomas believes a film format would better suit a potential reunion compared to reviving the television show. He noted challenges in scheduling new episodes years later.

Exclusive: Still Up, Apple TV+’s insomnia comedy starring The Good Doctor fan favorite Antonia Thomas and Craig Roberts, has been axed after one season.

The series was quietly shelved earlier this year, we are told, having launched in September 2023.

Produced by I May Destroy You maker Various Artists and created by Natalie Walter and Steve Burge, Still Up followed the exploits of Lisa (Thomas), an impulsive and free-spirited aspiring illustrator whose questions over her daughter’s future start keeping her up at night, and the socially anxious yet gifted journalist Danny, played by Submarine’s Roberts. The pair have no secrets, except their feelings for each other, and while the world sleeps they spend their long nights talking despite never meeting.

Blake Harrison, a former member of grindcore band Pig Destroyer, has died at the age of 48.

Harrison became an official member of the group’s lineup in 2006, adding samples and layers of harsh noise to the band’s grindcore sound. He exited Pig Destroyer in 2022.

Harrison’s partner Lindsey Turnbullet revealed on Facebook that he had been battling and beating cancer in recent years, though he ultimately passed away from unexpected heart failure following pneumonia. Harrison’s former band and his colleagues from the Baltimore metal scene have since taken to social media to mourn his passing.

The new Apple TV+ series Still Up answers that question through a sweet story about two friends Lisa and Danny suffering from insomnia, who are connected mostly through video calls.

Created by Steve Burge and Natalie Walter, Still Up has a small cast and it does a good job of focusing on the important storylines through them while also establishing their eccentricities and wants in the story seamlessly. We never feel that any of the characters in the series are out of place or forced in the story.

Still Up is an almost romantic comedy set in the after-hours world of insomniacs Danny (Roberts) and Lisa (Thomas), who have no secrets except their feelings for each other.

The trailer zeroes Danny and Lisa's bond. They struggle to sleep and bond as they help each other through the night.

Insomnia isn't easy to handle, so having someone on the other end of a phone with you throughout that difficult time must be comforting.

While Danny and Lisa believe their bond to be platonic, it seems romantic feelings are simmering beneath the surface between them.

The logline does reveal they have no secrets except their feelings for each other, so there's a good chance the eight-part comedy will chart that throughout.
