'Until Dawn' Featurette Reveals First Look at Highly Anticipated Adaptation
Image
Another time loop movie, anyone? Sony Pictures has released a featurette containing first-look footage from the upcoming adaptation of the beloved horror video game Until Dawn. The video game focuses on a group of eight young adults as players make life or death decisions for them as they try to survive a night with a killer on Blackwood Mountain. However, like many other video game adaptations, the movie will not be adapting the original story but instead putting a new group of characters on the mountain with a different take on the butterfly effect decision-making that catapulted the game to fame.

The new clip shows off the talented team behind the new horror adaptation, as well as how the film is taking a unique approach to the world of Until Dawn. In the featurette, director David F. Sandberg — director of horror hits Lights Out and Annabelle Creation — and writer Gary Dauberman...

Lacey Chabert's Christian Mingle Movie Moves to Great American Pure Flix
Lacey Chabert
In recent years, Lacey Chabert has been best known for her work in Hallmark films (she's starred in more than 30 of them).

But now, the queen of the small-screen rom-com is switching gears by associating herself with Hallmark's top competitor, Great American Pure Flix.

The faith-based streamer -- who would probably benefit from a catchier name -- announced today that it's acquired Chabert's 2014 film based on the Christian Mingle dating service.

The movie, titled -- you guessed it! -- Christian Mingle follows a formula that's probably pretty familiar to Hallmark fans.

But this is Pure Flix, baby! And that means there's be a religious twist on the usual tropes.

"In Christian Mingle, a marketing executive Gwyneth (Chabert) tries to find Mr. Right through a Christian dating service," reads a press release.

"When her plans go awry, Gwyneth opens her heart to more spiritual pursuits and accidentally finds Paul Wood (Moore...

Hollywood veterans John Magaro, Steve Zahn, and a terrifying Dylan Baker are superb in a film that continually surprises. Dylan Baker Is Absolutely Brilliant as a Hit Man in Laroy, Texas
Image
Baker delivers a career-best performance, setting the tone with a thrilling opening scene in the black comedy Laroy, Texas. Magaro's friendship with Baker led to a perfect casting choice, with the film gaining Coen brothers comparisons for its brilliance. Working with Shane as director was a seamless process, with the trio of veteran actors bringing the character dynamics to life.

Dylan Baker delivers one of the best performances of his illustrious 40-year career as Harry, a seemingly unassuming but terrifying hit man in the brilliant black comedy, Laroy, Texas. John Magaro stars as Ray, a pushover hardware store owner who's accidentally mistaken for Harry. He decides to take Harry's contract after being told by Skip (Steve Zahn), a goofy private investigator, that his wife (Megan Stevenson) has been having an affair. Harry's not happy someone's stolen his job and decides to find the impersonator.

Baker was recruited for the film by Magaro.

John Magaro on His Coen Brothers Type Film with Steve Zahn and Dylan Baker
Image
Laroy, Texas stars John Magaro, Steve Zahn, and Dylan Baker in a hilarious dark comedy that's one of the best films of the year so far. Magaro plays Ray, a meek hardware store owner who's mistaken for a hit man after Skip (Zahn), a goofy private investigator, tells him that his wife (Megan Stevenson) is having an affair. The film is reminiscent of the Coen Brothers' Blood Simple and Fargo, with tragic themes that have unexpected twists.

Magaro spoke with us at length about producing the film with writer/director Shane Atkinson in his feature debut. "I've worked with a lot of first-time filmmakers," said Magaro, humorously adding, "It took a few years. It wasn't easy. It's hard to get people to invest in a first-time filmmaker. And it's not like I'm bringing in a ton of money. I do indie films. I've had the good fortune of doing some good stuff,...

James Cullen Bressack’s ‘Murder, Anyone?’ Acquired by Uncork’d Entertainment (Exclusive)
James Cullen Bressack
Uncork’d Entertainment has acquired director James Cullen Bressack’s well-received horror-comedy, “Murder, Anyone?” based on the play of the same name by Bressack’s father, Emmy-award winner Gordon Bressack.

The film will be released in early 2023.

“Murder, Anyone?” explores the concept of manifestation, and stars Kristos Andrews (“The Bay”), Galadriel Stineman (“The Middle”), Maurice Lamarche (“Pinky and the Brain”), Spencer Breslin, and Oscar nominee Sally Kirkland.

The story follows playwrights George and Charlie, tasked with the challenge of creating the next “avant-garde, surrealistic, mind-bending neo-noire thriller.” Unfortunately, as they write, the story comes to life in real time — but their own emotions and arguments also begin to manifest on film, creating sharp twists and turns and filling their life with hilarity — and chaos.

James Cullen Bressack Adapting Father Gordon Bressack’s Play ‘Murder, Anyone?’ Into Feature Film (Exclusive)
Image
James Cullen Bressack (“Fortress”) is adapting the play “Murder, Anyone?” into a feature film, Variety can exclusively reveal.

“Muder, Anyone?” was originally written by Bressack’s father, Emmy Award-winning “Pinky and the Brain” writer Gordon Bressack. The play first premiered at the White Fire Theatre in Los Angeles in 2017.

Gordon Bressack, who worked on dozens of beloved animated shows including “Animaniacs” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” died in 2019.

Now his son will direct and produce a feature film adaptation, in part to “bring attention to his work,” Bressack tells Variety.

Spencer Breslin (“The Happening”) and Kristos Andrews (“The Bay”) are set to star in the film, a faithful adaptation of Bressack Sr.’s show about two playwrights tasked with creating a new “avant-garde, surrealistic, mind-bending neo-noire thriller” who find their story coming to life as they write.

Breslin and Andrews are joined by Galadriel Stineman (“The Is Us”), Maurice Lamarche (“Animaniacs”), Charles M.

‘Until Dawn’ – A Horror Fans (Re)View
I’ve been gaming for years, for longer than I have been a horror fan in fact. From the ZX81 through the Acorn Electron, Commodore 64, Nes, Snes, Megadrive and beyond, and even back in the early days there were attempts to meld video games and movies. Be it cinematic style games like It Came From the Desert to the huge push into full motion video games like Mad Dog McCree. There have even been horror video games based on the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th, though both of those games never made it to UK shores because, back then, games were for “kids” only.

Of course we’ve had games like the Trilobyte-produced PC games The 7th Guest and 11th Hour, which captured the scares perfectly and then there’s the controversial Night Trap on the Mega CD – a game which was one of...

Until Dawn Review
Are you one of those people who regularly yells at the TV while watching horror movies, because the characters’ dumb decisions annoy you to no end? If so, your chance to prove how much smarter you are than the average slasher movie victim has arrived, in the form of Supermassive Games’ Until Dawn. Combining horror movies with narrative-focused gaming to create a scary attempt at survival, it’s an instant classic that brings immersion to a whole new level.

Set in what seems to be the remote wilderness of Western Canada, Until Dawn is more of an experience than your average video game. It begins with a bang, then fast forwards a year ahead, to a time where eight friends have decided to culminate for a weekend of wintry remembrance in honour of friends who previously perished. They all ascend a gigantic mountain with the promise of friendship, memories and good times,...

'Gotham Central': Premature Casting Call!
by Paul Montgomery

Yesterday we reported on Ed Brubaker's latest comments with regard to a "Gotham Central" television series, a project long sought by fans, studio execs and the book's creators. Despite all that interest and the heap of gauntlets tossed down by Disney and Marvel, the project has also been deferred for just as long thanks to Batman's loftier exploits in Hollywood and Christopher Nolan's desire to stay on message. With Nolan's trilogy on the shelf and "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." launching this evening, fervor for a potential DC procedural has crested higher than ever.

Though Zack Snyder's fast-tracked "Superman vs. Batman" could put yet another damper on that "Gotham Central" green light, the hope of seeing Montoya, Allen, Sawyer and Driver on screen begs for speculation, especially in the afterglow of the Emmy Awards gala and the reminder that we bask in a golden age of television.
