Annecy: Cartoon Network Studios’ Biggest Icons Look Back on 25 Years of Animation
Image
The ’90s and early ’00s were a new golden era for TV animation, a time when shows could come not from executives and board rooms, but from people with a unique creative vision. Nickelodeon exploded unto the scene with “Doug,” “Rugrats,” and “The Ren & Stimpy Show” before Cartoon Network responded a few years later with their first original cartoons starting with “Dexter’s Laboratory.”

That show helped establish Cartoon Network as an incubator of talent and ideas, an incubator that would later become a studio when Cartoon Network Studios was properly founded as a separate entity from Hanna-Barbera and Warner Bros. Animation 25 years ago. Continuing the spirit of experimentation and creatively driven projects from the early days of the network, the studio’s first show was unlike anything else at the time, a genre-bending action show with little dialogue, born out of complaints from its creator, Genndy Tartakovsky.

The Angry Birds Movie 3 Sets Release Date (But It's Not Soon)
Image
The Angry Birds franchise started as a game series, and its popularity led to two films, a television series, merchandize, themed parks, and more. The first movie, The Angry Birds Movie, came out in 2016, followed by a sequel in 2019.

Now, Paramount Pictures officially confirmed the movie is happening, and set a worldwide release date for The Angry Birds Movie 3 on January 29, 2027. This will be the longest break in between installments, with almost a decade after the sequel.

The original film starred Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Sean Penn, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Bill Hader, and Peter Dinklage. It followed Sudeikis' Red, an outcast on an island of anthropomorphic flightless birds who thinks the leader of a crew of pigs is plotting an evil plan. The Angry Birds Movie 2 had most of the crew back,...

Paramount Pictures has added a third “Angry Birds Movie” to its release slate, setting it for January 29, 2027.

Paramount takes over as distributor from Sony Pictures, which released the first “Angry Birds Movie” from Rovio Animation in 2016, grossing $352 million worldwide. The film yielded a 2019 sequel that didn’t fly nearly as high with $152.2 million, though insiders at Paramount say that the films have seen robust viewership on streaming over the past five years.

Rovio returns as producers on the film with Sega, which acquired Rovio and “Angry Birds” in 2023 and which has partnered with Paramount on the “Sonic the Hedgehog” films. Namit Malhotra will also produce through his company Prime Focus Studios, in partnership with Flywheel Media, One Cool Group, and

Dentsu. Dneg, the animation studio behind “The Garfield Movie,” “Nimona” and the upcoming “The Cat in the Hat,” will animate the film.

10 Best Pirate Shows That Aren't Black Sails
Image
Although its series finale originally aired on Starz back in 2017, Black Sails is still regarded as one of the best pirate shows of all time. Filled with complex characters and high production values, the show avoids common pitfalls of the genre like overindulging in sex and violence. Set during the Golden Age of Piracy, the series serves as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic Treasure Island.

Black Sails tells the swashbuckling tale of Captain Flint and his crew as they fight for the survival of New Providence Island. Weaving real-life characters like Anne Bonny and Blackbeard into the fictional narrative gave a boost to the show's appeal. Fortunately, there is no shortage of great pirate shows for viewers who have finished Black Sails.

You Can Thank Flapjack For Cartoons Like Adventure Time, Gravity Falls & More
Image
The history of television is fascinating because you can trace lines between almost any modern show and one of the classics, as crews move from one show to another, bringing their past work and their influences with them. This applies to both live-action and animation. In the latter, many animators who start as writers or storyboard artists in one show end up creating their own series years later, bringing colleagues along with them, who then go on to create their own shows in return. Take "Dexter's Laboratory" launching the career of not just Genndy Tartakovsky, but also Craig McCracken, Rob Renzetti, Butch Hartman, and Seth MacFarlane, each going on to make a popular show.

What "Dexter's Laboratory" did in the '90s, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" did in the late 2000s. This is a show that helped launch several animation careers, with plenty of writers and storyboard artists...

How Flapjack Snuck Its Way Past A Cartoon Network Exec's No 'Weird' Rule
Image
After Jim Samples, the Cartoon Network executive who oversaw the greenlighting of such successful cartoons as "Samurai Jack," "Ben 10," "Codename: Kids Next Door," and "The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy," left, a new regime at the popular animation-focused cable channel changed tactics. When Stuart Snyder took over in mid-2007, he had a brand new mandate for Cartoon Network — no weird stuff.

Speaking with Buzzfeed, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" creator Thurop Van Orman recalled Snyder saying, "'We don't want anything weird or anything where any mom would come out of the kitchen and say, 'What are you watching?'"

Now, this is not to say that Snyder failed at that command, or that his definition of the word "weird" is different than this writer's, but his tenure was filled with shows you could call "weird" and would make a mom say "What are you watching?"

"The Amazing World of Gumball,...

Most Innocent Animated TV Characters
Image
Animated characters have diverse personalities which spawn entertaining interactions as well as drive their plots forward. Some characters are intense, while others are kind and a bit naive. It's these latter characters who showcase the optimism necessary for lifting the mood of a series.

While they are not lacking in intelligence, these individuals have an overly romantic view of the world which can cause them to be manipulated by others. Numbuh 3 from Codename: Kids Next Door may not be the brains of most operations, but her emotional intuition and encouraging attitude are as pivotal as the strengths of her counterparts. Moreover, characters like Linda Belcher from Bob's Burgers create a unique style of comedy that makes a show memorable. These innocent characters are usually well-meaning and childlike, and they each provide a necessary balance to their respective shows.

Bo Report: ‘Maleficent’ tops ‘Zombieland’ in the battle of the sequels
‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.’

In the battle of the sequels Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil beat Sony’s Zombieland: Double Tap last weekend but neither was a match for the third frame of Warner Bros’ juggernaut Joker.

Launching on 60 screens, Universal’s Judy Garland biopic Judy hit a high note while Cinema Live’s Billy Connolly: The Sex Life of Bandages did not generate many laughs or dollars and Icon’s mystery thriller Strange But True bombed.

It was a soft trading weekend at cinemas as the top 20 titles harvested $14.2 million, down 27 per cent on the previous frame, according to Numero.

Todd Phillips’ Joker rang up $4.3 million despite falling by 41 per cent, hoisting its total to $28.5 million. The WB/Village Roadshow/Bron Studios’ production has amassed $738.5 million worldwide: $247.2 million in the Us and $491.3 million internationally, where it now ranks as the fourth biggest DC comics-based blockbuster of all time.

Bo Report: ‘Hustlers’ trumped by ‘Joker’ as ‘Gemini Man’ bombs
‘Hustlers’ (Photo credit: Stx Films).

Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers is a hit in the Us but the crime caper starring Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Lili Reinhart and Cardi B was never going to beat the second weekend of Todd Phillips’ blockbuster Joker in Australia.

Meanwhile Ang Lee’s $140 million-budgeted action thriller Gemini Man is shaping as a write-off for Paramount Pictures and co-investors Skydance, Alibaba and Fosun.

Rachel Griffiths’ Ride Like a Girl maintained a fair clip in its third weekend while two alternate content releases, Nt Live: Fleabag and Metallica & San Francisco Symphony: S&m drew sizable audiences.

The top 20 titles generated $19.2 million last weekend, 13 per cent down on the previous frame, according to Numero.

Starring Joaquin Phoenix as the twisted, disenfranchised clown-for-hire and stand-up comic in 1980s Gotham, Joker rang up $7.4 million, easing by just 24 per cent, hoisting its total to $22 million.

Updated, Thursday Am: Sony’s Angry Birds 2 ranked 4th yesterday with $1.6M, -36% for a running two day total of $4.2M. Disney’s Lion King and Universal’s Hobbs & Shaw are currently fighting over No. 1 Wednesday with $2.3M a piece. CBS Films’ Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark took third place with just under $2M and six-day total of $28.5M. Paramount’s Dora and Sony’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are wrangling over 5th with $1.5M a piece.

By the way, this whole flooding of the early August marketplace with several wide releases was going on last year at this time, however, it was four wide entries each for the first and second weekend, not five like this year. The only difference is that we had powerful pics like Meg and Crazy Rich Asians rising to the top last August while distributors are largely delivering low budget fare.

That film’s very existence, re-animated by Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart et al, proves you can never write off an old franchise or an even older video game — and there’s every chance that the further adventures of the flightless cartoon birds and their green pig adversaries can feather the nest for Sony this summer.

Not that “Angry Birds 2” is a very good film. Let’s not go crazy here. Compared to Disney/Pixar, the work here is rudimentary in terms of artistry, character and script. There are hardly any gags in the dialogue, not even terrible bird-based puns. And as for any wholesome or heart-warming family message, forget it. But that in itself may prove somewhat refreshing,...

Natalie Portman and Mehdi Taleghani in Lucy in the Sky (2019)
Film News Roundup: Natalie Portman’s ‘Lucy in the Sky’ Gets Awards-Season Release
Natalie Portman and Mehdi Taleghani in Lucy in the Sky (2019)
In today’s films news roundup, “Lucy in the Sky” and “Villains” get release dates, “The Angry Birds 2” is moved up a day, Tony Todd gets a part and Art House Theater Day is set.

Release Dates

Fox Searchlight has set an awards-season release date of Oct. 4 for Natalie Portman’s astronaut drama “Lucy in the Sky.”

Noah Hawley helmed “Lucy in the Sky” in his directorial feature film debut. Portman stars as an astronaut who returns to Earth after an extended time is space and begins an obsessive affair with a fellow astronaut, played by Jon Hamm. The plot is loosely based on the true story of Nasa astronaut Lisa Nowak, who was arrested in 2007 for the attempted murder of fellow astronaut Colleen Shipman, who was romantically involved with astronaut William Oefelein.

The film, formerly called “Pale Blue Dot,” also stars Dan Stevens — as the husband of Portman’s...

The Angry Birds Movie 2 review – another fun-filled flutter
Sworn animal enemies must team up as the smartphone game adaptation catapults towards another minor triumph

Sony Animation’s The Angry Birds Movie surprised many three years ago by a) not being terrible, and b) actually being quite fun in a disposable way: the zappiest attempt at brand extension this side of The Lego Movie. The sequel tempts fate by pausing the innately funny war between birds and pigs in order to pit both factions against new predators from the neighbouring Eagle Island. Incoming director Thurop van Orman approaches this expanded universe with something of the visual ambition of Pixar’s Brad Bird and a restless, playful spirit reminiscent of the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs films. The birds are no longer as irate as they once were, but the franchise appears to have levelled up.

The original itched to get past its origin story and on to pixelating the game’s parrot-slinging.

Film Review: ‘The Angry Birds Movie 2’
Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis, Alma Varsano, Genesis Tennon, Danny McBride, Sterling K. Brown, Josh Gad, Rachel Bloom, Awkwafina, and Brooklynn Prince in The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019)
“For every minute you remain angry, you give up sixty seconds of peace of mind,” wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson — though he reckoned without the Angry Birds making a virtue of that trade. Peace of any kind is in short supply in “The Angry Birds Movie 2,” another breathless, frenetic cartoon escapade derived from the once-ubiquitous video game franchise, and again its manic, catapulting comic energy is more appealing than those origins might suggest. Despite a complete replacement of the first film’s writing and directing teams — with acclaimed, offbeat TV animator Thurop Van Orman brashly taking the reins in his first feature assignment — this second loopy adventure for misfit cardinal Red and his feathered-but-flightless friends maintains the balance of scattergun jokes, candy-coated visuals and cheerfully bird-brained storytelling that raked in $350 million worldwide in 2016.

How close “The Angry Birds Movie 2” comes to matching that figure will depend on how firmly...

The Angry Birds Movie 2 Final Trailer Has Birds and Pigs Uniting to Save the World
Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis, Alma Varsano, Genesis Tennon, Danny McBride, Sterling K. Brown, Josh Gad, Rachel Bloom, Awkwafina, and Brooklynn Prince in The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019)
The final trailer for The Angry Birds Movie 2 has arrived. With success comes sequels. That's just the way Hollywood works and, by most measures. The Angry Birds Movie, based on the wildly popular mobile game of the same name, released in 2016, was successful. So, we're getting a follow-up. This time, the warring factions of birds and pigs are forced to work together in order to stop a larger threat. As we can see from this loaded down final trailer, that leads to all sorts of animated hijinks. This includes, but is not limited to, some very self-aware dark humor.

The trailer kicks off with "The Final Countdown" by Europe, which is a bit unexpected. It then gets to the heart of the matter, as a new island is discovered, which leads to a team-up between the pigs and the birds. Much of the trailer, Ocean's Eleven style, is dedicated...

Hilarity ensues.

See Tiffany Haddish Make Her Debut as the Adorable Debbie in The Angry Birds Movie 2
Tiffany Haddish
Tiffany Haddish is taking her optimism to The Angry Birds Movie 2.

In a People exclusive first look, the actress stars as Debbie, an eagle who is Zeta’s (Leslie Jones) doting yet clumsy paid assistant.

Debbie worships Zeta and doesn’t hesitate to organize her schedule and personal life, as well as doubling as Zeta’s psychologist when she’s got no one else to talk to.

John Cohen, a producer on the film, said Debbie is quite like Haddish, 39.

“[Debbie] approaches the world with an infectious glass-half-full positivity, so Tiffany Haddish was the absolute perfect – and only – person for this role,...

‘The Angry Birds Movie 2’ Swoops Into Cannes, Unveils Squeal Team Six Scene
Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis, Alma Varsano, Genesis Tennon, Danny McBride, Sterling K. Brown, Josh Gad, Rachel Bloom, Awkwafina, and Brooklynn Prince in The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019)
The Angry Birds Movie 2 took a flying leap off the Carlton Hotel pier here in Cannes today as part of Sony’s now annual pre-fest promotional stunt to launch a summer title. At the same time, a new scene from the Sony Pictures Animation/Rovio Entertainment sequel was released online.

In Cannes, the irked birds and scheming green piggies banded together this afternoon to fling a stuffed hatchling from the dock using the birds’ signature slingshot. The stunt echoes the themes of the film which sees a new threat emerge that puts both Bird and Pig Island in danger and forces the foes to unite against a common enemy. On hand in Cannes were Josh Gad who voices Chuck as well as director Thurop Van Orman and producer John Cohen. Also in town were local voice talent...

Sony Catapults ‘The Angry Birds Movie 2’ Into Cannes
A giant stuffed toy bird was catapulted from a Cannes beachfront pier Monday as Sony used its now traditional pre-festival slot to generate buzz for its new film “The Angry Birds Movie 2.” New footage from the movie dropped right after the stunt.

The first picture made more than $540 million internationally. Voice talent including Josh Gad turned out in Cannes alongside costumed characters as international press – and bemused Cannes sunbathers – looked on for the sequel stunt.

In the new picture, the birds and pigs unite against a common foe, but there is friction between them. “They do not get along, they don’t trust each other,” producer John Cohen told Variety. “It’s not unlike when the Avengers came together for the first time. There are a lot of trust issues.”

The voice cast includes Bill Hader, Awkwafina, Peter Dinklage, and Nicki Minaj.

“We just wanted to bring it one...

‘The Angry Birds Movie 2’ Flying Into Cannes With Slingshot Stunt For Sony’s Latest Pre-Fest Promotion
Exclusive: After hatching a promotional niche with The Angry Birds Movie on the eve of the Cannes Film Festival in 2016, Sony will be back on the Croisette next week to launch the global campaign for its sequel, The Angry Birds Movie 2.

Taking place on Monday, this year’s stunt is the latest in a savvy move Sony began with the first film (which went on to gross $352 million worldwide) and has continued since as a means to stake out prime real estate a day ahead of the fest’s official opening. The strategy is to hit during a lull in which the entertainment media is on the ground prepping for the main event — and looking for photo ops.

The Angry Birds 2 stunt that begins at 3 Pm local time on May 13 will see the titular irked avians and their longtime pig adversaries become frenemies and join forces to defeat a common foe,...

The birds are back in town, and this time it’s personal. Here’s what’s on the bill: When a new threat emerges that puts both Bird and Pig Island in danger, Red (Jason Sudeikis), Chuck (Josh Gad), Bomb (Danny McBride) and Mighty Eagle (Peter Dinklage) recruit Chuck’s sister Silver (Rachel Bloom) and team up with pigs Leonard (Bill Hader), his assistant Courtney (Awkwafina) and techpig Garry (Sterling K. Angry Birds 2 Trailer Arrives, Putting the Birds on Ice
Sony Pictures and Rovio Entertainment have revealed the first trailer and poster for Angry Birds 2. The sequel flyies into theaters on August 16th, 2019 in celebration of the tenth anniversary of the first game. In the trailer, we're introduced to the villainous Zeta. She's got tons of ice... and zero chill. The first film's birds and pigs, including Jason Sudeikis as the temperamental Red, Josh Gad as speedy Chuck, Bill Hader as Leonard, king of the pigs, and Danny McBride as the volatile Bomb, are back for more fun, as is Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), stentorian voice of the legendary Mighty Eagle.

The Angry Birds 2 trailer starts off with Vanilla Ice's iconic 1990 hit "Ice Ice Baby" before introducing Zeta's (Leslie Jones) ice palace. Things seem to be going okay at first, but the villain quickly tires of the ice and not being able to eat or drink anything because...

Thousands Sign Pay Equity Petition For Animation Industry’s Female-Dominated Color Stylist Craft
With negotiations set to begin Tuesday for a new Animation Guild contract, more than 2,600 industry figures have signed a petition calling for pay equity for color stylists, the animation industry’s only predominantly female craft, whose artists set the look, lighting and palette of cartoons.

The 3,500-member Animation Guild, Iatse Local 839, hasn’t struck the industry since 1983, but leaders told their members recently that a strike this time around “is always a possibility, if not a probability.” The guild’s talks are separate from the recently concluded negotiations for a new film and TV contract covering some 43,000 members of Iatse’s 13 West Coast studio locals.

The petition, organized by the Animation Guild’s Color Stylist Committee, is yet another sign of the growing movement for gender pay equity in Hollywood’s historically female-majority crafts. As reported here exclusively last week, more than 3,300 industry figures have signed another petition calling...
