Sound And Vision: Geremy Jasper
Image
In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at several videos by Geremy Jasper, co-directed with Georgie Greville. Geremy Jasper is an up-and-coming director, whose achingly sincere yet crowdpleasing Patti Cake$ turned heads on the festival scene. His new film O'dessa is as music oriented, but has divided both audiences and critics with its weird blend of honkytonk musical and dystopian scifi B-movie trappings. Up until the fluke of an ending it was extremely my thing, playing like an update of Six String Samurai for a post-Black Mirror world. It also is clearly a passion project for Jasper, whose music videos are cut from the same cloth. All of them were co-directed...

O’Dessa
Image
To make an all-time-great album, you don’t play it safe. Ziggy Stardust, for instance, is a far-out space oddity. Modern masterworks like The ArchAndroid or Art Angels mash genres at will, inventing sounds you’ve never heard before. While Geremy Jasper’s original rock-opera movie musical O’Dessa fails in its attempt at greatness, it at least understands that grasping towards eternity means taking an almighty leap.

You’d be hard-pressed to say you’ve seen anything quite like O’Dessa before. Jasper’s long-awaited follow-up to Sundance favourite Patti Cake$ is a truly oddball brew – a banjo-twanging alt-universe odyssey through a gaudy, dystopian world, where psychedelic ooze (‘plazma’) bubbles under the soil and Murray Bartlett’s cult leader Plutonovich has enslaved the populus through mindless entertainment. Enter Sadie Sink’s O’Dessa, possibly the fabled ‘Seventh Son’, on a ramblin’ quest that’ll lead her to true love and musical liberation.

Regina Hall, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Sadie Sink in O'Dessa (2025)
O’Dessa (2025) Movie Review: A Cyberpunk Musical that is High on Ambition but Lacks Cohesion
Regina Hall, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Sadie Sink in O'Dessa (2025)
“O’Dessa” (2025) is another musical film by Geremy Jasper, who previously wrote and directed “Patti Cake$.” This 2017 film was about a rapper with high ambitions, who hoped to leave her sorrows behind to find success in the world of music. That is particularly difficult for someone from her socio-economic background. Most of Patti Cake$’s themes appear in “O’Dessa,” which also follows a young girl leaving her home in pursuit of success. However, the approach is unmistakably different. Jasper’s former film used a rather naturalistic tone of narration while his latest is dynamic, vibrant, and is set in a neon-soaked post-apocalyptic world.

Jasper’s film uses its futuristic setting in contrast to its gritty working-class neighborhoods. It heightens the dreadful darkness in their lives. In this world, even the neon lights feel piercing and harsh. However, at times, they have a glisteningly soft and tender effect, akin to Jane Schoenbrun...

‘O’Dessa’ Review: Sadie Sink Rocks and Rules in Post-Apocalyptic Busking Fable
Image
The fantasy that rock ‘n’ roll will save the world has been rambling around since damn near the dawn of the genre, but I think it’s fair to say we’ve seen mixed results. Anthems about peace, love and understanding were political rallying cries in the 1960s, and sexual liberation sure has been liberating. But we do still seem to have an awful lot of fascism around here, and conservatism is so rampant that we may only be a few years away from outlawing music altogether unless it’s approved by Kid Rock. (The worst kind of rock.)

Still, the dream lives on in films like “O’Dessa,” a post-apocalyptic musical fable in the vein of cult classics like “Rock and Rule,” “Six-String Samurai” and “Vicious Lips.” “Stranger Things” breakout Sadie Sink stars as the title character, the last in a long line of troubadours who wander the wastelands bringing...

Seventh Wanderer: Writer/Director/Songwriter Geremy Jasper Talks ‘O’Dessa’
Image
Photo by Nikola Predovic, Courtesy of Searchlight Pictures.

by Chad Kennerk

Following the 2017 debut feature Patti Cake$, writer/director Geremy Jasper returns with an ambitious, genre-defying sophomore feature that blends music and mythology into a dystopian fantasy. The sci-fi fairy tale O’Dessa is inspired by Jasper’s adventures through the video store growing up and the music of the 70s and 80s. A musical odyssey into a warped, post-apocalyptic world, the mythic rock opera echoes the vibrant, dreamy aesthetics of filmmakers such as Terry Gilliam and Alejandro Jodorowsky.

In collaboration with long-time musical partner Jason Binnick, Jasper brought the world of O'Dessa to life, ensuring the music, story and characters work as one. The original music, ranging from folk to rock to avant-garde, was crafted in alignment with the story’s themes of hope, self-discovery and transformation amidst a bleak world. O'Dessa Galloway (Sadie Sink) is a young troubadour on...

Angelina Jolie & Lenny Kravitz Inspired Kelvin Harrison Jr. in New Film
Image
How many of us grew up watching certain rock bands or icons performing on stage and thinking, "That's going to be me one day"? And if you could never match the massive talent of said musical legends, you might have found yourself pretending you were up on stage, performing in front of thousands of die-hard fans. And hey, if you've grown up acting on stage and screen, at least you might have had the chance to play a rock god. That's what rising star Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Waves) masterfully pulls off in his latest feature, a sci-fi musical called O'Dessa, directed by Geremy Jasper. Opposite Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), Harrison plays a fictitious musical icon named Euri who regularly performs in a post-apocalyptic society.

Euri's antics may remind you of any number of celebs or characters from other hit films. MovieWeb recently spoke with Harrison to learn about any inspirations behind his new scene-stealing turn.

O’Dessa SXSW Review — Why is this Sci-Fi Musical Mediocre?
Image
Crafting a genre mashup is much more complex than many imagine. However, when the combination is not executed at a high level, the weaker aspects of each genre become even more apparent to the audience. O’Dessa, unfortunately, falls into this realm, with the sci-fi, post-apocalyptic musical struggling to blend its ideas into a story that rises above service-level cultural critiques. While director Geremy Jasper tries to infuse style into the tale, the execution does not match O’Dessa‘s ambition. This makes the musical feel like a frustrating miss from its opening sequences.

'O’Dessa' Review: Sadie Sink’s Apocalyptic Rock Opera Fails to Strike a Chord
Image
You'll know exactly what kind of movie O'Dessa is within the first five minutes. Geremy Jasper's follow-up to his charming rap dramedy Patti Cake$ could not be more different. With blaring guitar strums, bright neon lights flooding the screen, and an ominous fascistic illusionist played byMurray Bartlett, there's almost too much to take in. For all the faults O'Dessa has, it's clearly a film made with an abundance of passion and creativity. It's a gender-swapped, punk rock, post-apocalyptic reinvention of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. It's also a movie that largely doesn't work and trips over its own ambition.

O’Dessa Review: Prophecy, Punk, and Provocation
Image
O’Dessa opens with an audacious reimagining of myth in a world where the remnants of rural life collide with the neon glare of a futuristic urban sprawl.

Director Geremy Jasper crafts a narrative steeped in legend and futuristic flair, presenting a tale of a young farm girl burdened by an ancient prophecy who dares to challenge an oppressive system armed only with her trusty, weathered guitar and a determined spirit (one might chuckle at the film’s blend of earnest idealism with a wry nod to its own theatrical excesses).

The stark contrast between pastoral simplicity and a metropolis alive with garish cyberpunk visuals creates a setting that is as richly detailed as it is steeped in symbolism. Here, the decay of a forgotten past meets the relentless flash of modernity, inviting viewers to reflect on recurring societal cycles and historical echoes.

Themes of personal transformation, the liberating power of song,...

‘O’Dessa’ Review: Sadie Sink Finds a Few Grace Notes in an Otherwise Discordant Rock Opera
Image
Among the more memorable moments in “O’Dessa,” there’s a scene in which the title character (Sadie Sink) is obliged to build herself a new guitar from what’s available in a scrapyard. The axe that was bestowed upon her by her father, a legendary rambler, was stolen and sold off to a pawn shop and she can’t afford to get it back, so she doesn’t think twice about making her own. Beyond stressing the endearing handmade quality that was part of the production as a whole, it stands out as one of the few sequences in Geremy Jasper’s overstuffed rock opera that’s completely understandable from start to finish when there are plenty of big swings but perpetually stunted follow-through.

Boasting more than a dozen original songs from Jasper and Jason Binnick, “O’Dessa” clearly had too much going for it in imagining a dystopia where the...

O'Dessa - Jennie Kermode - 19582
Geremy Jasper
In the world of movie musicals, the rock opera is a singular phenomenon. By nature exaggerated and overblown, it made sense in the 1970s, when a very particular sense of humour made room for glam and early hair metal to do their thing, but can it still work in the 21st Century? Writer/director Geremy Jasper, who charmed audiences with music-themed indie hit Patti Cake$ back in 2017, is determined to give it his all – but that’s part of the problem.

Screened as part of SXSW 2025, O’Dessa is a Disney production, and one can tell. It’s handsomely produced, colourful and slick, but almost entirely devoid of depth or real emotion – a quality that’s ironic in light of the fact that that’s how its big bad guy, entertainment tycoon Plutonovich (Murray Bartlett) is portrayed. From the outset it feels as if a collection of fantasy and dystopian science.

‘O’Dessa’ Review: Sadie Sink in a Post-Apocalyptic Rock Opera With Maximalist Style and Minimal Substance
Image
On the visual level, O’Dessa, writer-director Geremy Jasper’s follow-up to his 2017 crowd-pleaser Patti Cake$, revels in maximalism. Every set is littered with trinkets and lit in neon, every surface caked with layers of ancient grime, every costume a riot of textures and colors.

Its narrative concept aims high, too, transposing the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice into a postapocalyptic Mad Max-meets-Blade Runner landscape. Its themes are heartfelt and grandiose: the power of music, the power of love, the power of music forged in love to transform the world.

Underneath all those lofty intentions, however, the experience of actually watching the film is more akin to watching a really long trailer. There’s a distinctive eye here, and a promising sense of ambition. But in its current form, there’s not enough meat on its (admittedly cool-looking) bones to justify its 106-minute run time.

The script feels...

'O'Dessa' Review: A Fiery Sadie Sink Leads a Rock Opera
Image
Whatever you think the world is heading for ultimate peril or not, maybe a rock opera set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland is just the cure-all you need to remind you that things could be worse. Following her feisty turn in Darren Aronofsky's Oscar-winning film The Whale, Sadie Sink now leads a uniquely dark musical dropping on Hulu this week, which her fans can enjoy until the highly anticipated fifth season of Stranger Things begins streaming on Netflix. Aided by at least three other big-name performers, O’Dessa — titled in honor of Sink's eponymous heroine — is bound to garner a cult following, with a few catchy musical numbers to boost the formulaic storyline. And it helps that writer-director Geremy Jasper (Patti Cake$) proves his chops with world-building in this latest production.

Sadie Sink is stepping into the spotlight in O’Dessa, a post-apocalyptic rock opera that’s set to debut on Hulu. The first trailer introduces Sink’s character, a farm girl who embarks on a journey through a strange and dangerous city, where music holds an almost supernatural power.

The film, directed and written by Geremy Jasper (Patti Cake$), follows O’Dessa as she sets out to reclaim a cherished family heirloom. Along the way, she encounters a mysterious love interest and finds herself caught in a world ruled by an eccentric and sadistic entertainment mogul, played by Murray Bartlett. Also starring in the movie are Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Regina Hall.

Patti Cake$, 1.30am, Film4, Tuesday, January 13

Featuring a central performance that put Aussie actress Danielle Macdonald's name firmly on the map, this enjoyable tale of a New Jersey kid who dreams of being a rapper has so much gusto it re-energises its familiar themes. Geremy Jasper's debut also has an authenticity to the scripting and relationships that cuts through a lot of the cliches. Beyond Macdonald's ability to tear through the raps like a pro, Bridget Everett also puts in notable support as Patti's drunken and emotionally complex mum.

A ‘Harry Potter’ Disappointment Shaped Chris Columbus’ Approach to Producing ‘Nosferatu’
Image
Chris Columbus is well aware that his producer credit on Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu has prompted a few double takes from the audience. One would assume that the filmmaker behind two Home Alone films, Mrs. Doubtfire and two Harry Potter pics would have little overlap with Eggers’ idiosyncratic approach to genre films. But one of the goals of Maiden Voyage, Chris and his daughter Eleanor’s production company, is to show that filmmakers contain multitudes.

The journey to father-daughter Columbus producing their third film for Eggers — and fourteenth overall under the Maiden Voyage banner — hinges on several different factors. The first is producorial philosophy, which Chris established during the course of making the film franchise-launching Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001). The filmmaker wasn’t completely satisfied with the Devil’s Snare sequence, so he requested some CG-related augmentations that an executive producer ultimately rebuffed.

“One of the executives said to me,...

Leonardo DiCaprio at an event for Inception (2010)
Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall and Sean Penn have been confirmed to have been cast in Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming untitled feature.

According to a source, the movie is said to be set in California in a contemporary setting and will be an ensemble piece.

Warner Bros, who are producing the movie, are keeping all other details on the project top secret. However, it is said that the production is set to be Anderson’s most expensive project to date with an estimated $100 million price tag.

Also in news – Nominations announced for the 2024 BAFTA Ee Rising Star Award

Anderson, although a exceptional filmmaker is not known for his money making projects with the likes of ‘Phantom Thread,’ ‘Boogie Nights’ and ‘Licorice Pizza’ under his belt. In this instance it would seem that the bankability of DiCaprio is to be heavly relied on.

DiCaprio can currently be seen in Martin Scorsese...

Paul Thomas Anderson & Warner Bros Set Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Regina Hall In Film To Shoot This Year
Image
Exclusive: Warner Bros has Paul Thomas Anderson set to direct Oscar winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn as well as Regina Hall in an untitled film that will begin production this year in California. Anderson wrote the script, and he will produce the film with Sara Murphy and Adam Somner.

The film is currently untitled and they’re keeping the logline under wraps. We have learned that it is a contemporary setting and it is the most commercial one PTA has attempted, with commensurate budget. It came out of a relationship that Warner Bros Picture Group co-chairs/CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy built making PTA’s last film, Licorice Pizza, while they ran MGM. That film got three Oscar noms for Best Picture, and Best Screenplay and Best Director for PTA.

While DiCaprio, Penn and Hall are the leads, the new film will have a big ensemble cast...

2024 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Geremy Jasper’s O’Dessa
Image
Sold for a whopping 10 million to Fox Searchlight at Sundance back in ’17, Patti Cake$ became a major calling card for Geremy Jasper — and that forward momentum brought it to the Cannes Film Festival’s closing the Director’s Fortnight section that same year. Jasper doesn’t only write screenplays but lyrics too – and this will be the case once again with O’Dessa (and with co-writer Jason Binnick) – his sophomore project which would have gone into production this past May. Searchlight re-teamed with the filmmaker and there is probably no rush to premiere the film at Sundance but it’s a definite possibility with a line-up of Regina Hall, Sadie Sink, Kelvin Harrison Jr.…...

Sundance Camera Survey: Why Are So Many Independent Films Shot on the Alexa Mini?
Image
When IndieWire conducted its annual survey of all the cameras used by cinematographers at the Sundance Film Festival, a striking trend quickly emerged: Over 75 percent of the DPs with narrative films at the festival utilized either the Arri Alexa Mini or its large format sibling, the Alexa Mini Lf, as their camera of choice. The Mini was introduced in 2015 as a compact version of the Alexa designed primarily for use on drones and gimbals, but its combination of a traditional Alexa sensor with increased mobility eventually led to its use as the A camera on Hollywood studio movies like “A Star is Born” and “Get Out” — and now, it seems, for a majority of cinematographers in the independent realm.

The Mini’s presence in independent film began to be felt at Sundance’s 2017 iteration, where festival favorites “Patti Cake” and “Thoroughbreds,” among others, were captured with the camera. “It was a very ambitious shoot,...
