Ryan Kruger has a filmmaking career built on pushing boundaries and exploring the darker corners of genre cinema. Known for his bold visual style and his unique voice, Kruger first made waves with the cult hit Fried Barry (2020), which earned numerous accolades and cemented his place as a visionary in the South African film industry. Now, with his latest project Street Trash(2024), Kruger takes on the challenge of revisiting a beloved cult classic—Street Trash (1987)—while simultaneously charting a new course with a fresh narrative, a unique 2050 setting, and a blend of intense gore and meaningful storytelling. The film is a loose sequel, offering fans a chance to return to the bizarre, melting mayhem of the original but with Kruger’s distinct directorial vision.
Street Trash 2024 follows the dark and twisted adventures of a new set of characters as they grapple with societal collapse and the malevolent forces surrounding them.

A horror cult classic from the 1980s has just been given an update. Written and directed by Ryan Krueger, the new Street Trash is now available on Digital and Screambox.
Street Trash is a new sequel to the 1987 film of the same name directed by J. Michael Muro. 37 years after its release, the film is known among horror fans as one of the decade's best "melt movies" alongside titles such as The Stuff and The Blob remake. The newly-released sequel similarly utilizes 80s-style practical effects to reimagine Street Trash in just as much of a revolting way, and as Kruger teased in a new interview with Horror Geek Life, it's resulted in putting a "sh*tload of gore" on display.

What was your first experience watching the original Street Trash, and why has the film stuck with you years later?
Ryan Kruger: It was sitting in my bedroom with friends watching it late at night and having it on VHS. I love so many great 80s horror and overall gory films. It was a big part of my childhood.
How did the opportunity come up to create a loose sequel to the original film?
Ryan Kruger: My first film premiered on Joe Bob's The Last Drive-In. While people were watching, it came up a lot of times that Ryan Kruger would be a...

First came Street Trash in 1987, a fun little Brooklyn-set cult classic that would become known as one of the rare "melt movies" in the horror industry, gooey and gory movies that include melting faces or bodies. Now there's the 2024 film of the same name, now available on digital though its director is here to tell you that it's not a remake. Rather, filmmaker Ryan Kruger's latest feature is an in-universe continuation of the foundation established in the original story, with new characters introduced to carry on the homeless heroes' legacy that was fleshed out in the source material.
One such addition to the Street Trash ensemble is Chef, played by Joe Vaz and if his physical presence strikes a nostalgic nerve in the minds of cinephiles, that's because he looks exactly like Stanley Kubrick from a certain era. Ever heard of him? This is no accident, and MovieWeb learned...

Ryan Kruger's drip-nasty return to 1987's Street Trash lore isn't a remake, but an overseas sequel. South African class warfare brings a rebellious spirit and geopolitical weight to vile body meltdowns, like George A. Romero's unsubtle commentary meets Astron-6's unpredictable shenanigans. Kruger's splatterpunk vibes in Fried Barry translate into a neon-juicy homage to J. Michael Muro's top-tier 80s goop, but it's a tangled Hydra of story tangents, and each head isn't being fed properly. Shock-slop silliness expands horizons yet rambles incoherently, failing to deliver a character-driven Street Trash that'll give you more than a cheap buzz.
Greenpoint's junkyard denizens swap for Cape Town vagabonds, modern peasants abhorred by corrupt Mayor Mostert (Warrick Grier). J. Michael Muro’s 1987 cult classic “Street Trash” is on the Mount Rushmore of “melt movies,” a sickening horror subgenre marked by bodies literally dissolving into goo, with skin peeling off and skeletons deconstructing as outlandishly as possible. In the film, homeless people are poisoned and killed by a mysterious liquor named Tenafly Viper. “Fried Barry” writer and director Ryan Kruger has helmed a same-name sequel (out today on digital via Cineverse) that keeps the gonzo practical effects as a group of charming homeless misfits battle against a fascist government actively trying to exterminate them with a gaseous version of Viper. Kruger, who also co-wrote the movie and shot it in his native South Africa with producers Not the Funeral Home, spoke to Variety about balancing the message in the movie while still having fun, the difficulty of mopping up melted bodies and the possibility of a sequel.

Within the vastness of the horror genre, there are myriad subgenres which group together similar films, few as niche as 'melt movies.' The very limited genre is kind of like body horror that's specifically devoted to the gory melting of faces and bodies. Slime City, The Stuff, The Blob, The Incredible Melting Man, Body Melt these are some of the slime fests that have earned the infamous nomenclature over the years. This also includes Street Trash, a certain American cult classic from 1987 which was just reimagined by actor and filmmaker Ryan Kruger for an all-new feature that he produced in South Africa.

Last year, it was announced that the 1987 cult classic horror comedy Street Trash (buy it Here) would be getting a remake from Ryan Kruger, the director of the 2020 body horror film Fried Barry! Kruger’s take on the concept, which moves the story from Brooklyn to South Africa, is now ready to make its way out into the world, as Cineverse holds the North American distribution rights and they’re planning to give the film a VOD release on November 19th. It will then reach the Screambox streaming service sometime in December. With the release date swiftly approaching, Kruger sat down for an interview with our friends at Bloody Disgusting – and during this conversation, he revealed that he considers the new Street Trash to be a sequel to the original movie, not a remake of it.
The original Street Trash was directed by J. Michael Muro from a screenplay by Roy Frumkes.

Fried Barry director Ryan Kruger gives a new spin on the 1987 cult classic Street Trash, relocating the melt madness to Cape Town, South Africa, where the growing divide between rich and poor has changed the world as we know it. But Kruger will be the first to eschew the “remake” label, referring to his new film as a standalone sequel.
The filmmaker wrote Street Trash to be accessible for newcomers, while slyly referencing details and events from the original to make this new movie a continuation of the goopy, melty world introduced by director Jim Muro in 1987. Kruger took painstaking measures to even recapture the ’80s aesthetic, both through practical effects and shooting his reimagining on 35mm. It also helps that Kruger grew up as a massive fan of Street Trash.

Ray Shulman, a co-founding member and bassist of the influential prog-rock band Gentle Giant, has died at the age of 73.
According to his brother and bandmate, Derek, Ray passed away on March 30th after “he bravely battled a long illness.”
Having grown up in a musical family, Ray and brothers Phil and Derek started their first band together in the early 1960s. Performing as Simon Dupree and the Big Sound, the band quickly earned a record deal with Emi and achieved a top 10 single with their song “Kites.” At one point, their lineup even featured a young piano player named Reginald Dwight, who went on to find fame as Elton John.
Simon Dupree and the Big Sound’s existence was short-lived, as the Shulman brothers became disillusioned by the music industry and being seen as one-hit wonders. After unsuccessfully attempting to release music under the moniker The Moles, the group broke up.

On Friday, August 19, 2022 Amy and Gary Green are hosting an evening fundraiser at their home in Bridgehampton, New York to support the philanthropic and conservation efforts of the African Community & Conservation Fund (Accf) and Tusk, a UK-based charity headed up by Royal Patron, Prince William.
The “Karibu Africa” soireé will raise money to help Accf’s and Tusk’s many community outreach programs, wildlife protection and anti-poaching efforts, including initiatives to improve livelihoods and combat rising food poverty in East & Southern Africa, particularly Tanzania, Rwanda, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
Covid-19 devastated jobs and livelihoods across the African continent, and with few economic recovery resources, decades of conservation and community upliftment success has been put at risk. Moreover, Russia’s war in Ukraine has collaterally created a global food crisis, as wheat and other grain shipments to Africa have been cut off or dangerously delayed.

An extraterrestrial picks a junkie to inhabit in this seedy, inconsistently acted but often sharply comic urban tale
This gleefully lurid, picaresque journey through a few days in Cape Town for an alien inhabiting the body of a skeevy junkie named Barry (Gary Green) won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. But scattered among the gross-out scenes – involving violence or bodily fluids or both, the bouts of softcore shagging, and innumerable garish “trippy” bits where the protagonist and his acquaintances do drugs – there’s actually some reasonably sharply comic, surprisingly touching and straight-up well-acted moments.
Presumably, the key variables are the improvising performers that first-time director Ryan Kruger, fluffing up what was originally a short into feature length, collaborated with for each scene. Some, like Chanelle de Jager, who plays Barry’s longsuffering wife and is given to long profane rants in Afrikaans about Barry’s uselessness, have real...

I know of Ryan Kruger from some of his short film work things, such as 2014’s The Golden Rule and, of course, his 2017 short thing, Fried Barry. I was pleased as punch, you could say, when I heard about the feature length motion picture thing named, well… Fried Barry that would be hitting the screens in 2020. Kruger certainly has an eye for the absurd, but he is also able to adapt and write emotional view-points and tell stories with more than just skin. He can give some real flesh, muscle and blood to what he creates, so I was on board for this peculiar flick.
The first thing that hit me, right in the jaw, about Fried Barry is just how damned creative it is. I love when a weird oddball...

You can’t help but have high hopes for a film called Fried Barry so thankfully expectations have been massively exceeded. Writer/director Ryan Kruger extends his 2017 short of the same name into a phenomenal mind-f**k masterpiece that transcends nano-budget B movie trappings.
The script doesn’t let up as we’re swiftly introduced to Barry (brilliantly played by Gary Green), a perpetually frazzled, financially struggling, drug addled dad/scumbag, who looks like a hybrid of Lee Van Cleef, Julian Beck (Kane from Poltergeist 2) and Dieter Laser from The Human Centipede films.
After walking out on his wife and young son, Barry goes pub, gets tousled on heroin and is then either possessed by extra-terrestrials or has the type of frighteningly heightened hallucination that would suggest he’s been cajoled onto a toad licking frenzy by a psycho Shaman from Mars.
We’re then swiftly booted face first into Barry’s odyssey,...

Who would have predicted that the biggest surprise of the night would come from Gary Green?
Gary, Sara, and the rest of the Legends went right to work after the captain of the Waverider got abducted by aliens on DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 6 Episode 1.
It was a fantastically fun hour with the introduction of a new team member, a proposal, seriously cool aliens, and character moments for just about everyone. But no one really expected anything different from this show, did they?
DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 6 promised to be jam-packed with aliens, and they definitely did not disappoint us.
The aliens that took Sara are gross, fierce, and everything you would expect from an extraterrestrial creature. And, shockingly, one of them was Gary.
The geeky agent from the Time Bureau had us fooled all along. He was originally sent to Earth to find the quintessential human and bring...
