With Gina Carano and Disney formally closing the chapter on her wrongful termination lawsuit on August 7, 2025, an opportunity has opened up for the actor to finally steamroll the unmade all-femme Expendables spin-off movie. It was reported via Variety that both parties settled before the case (financially backed by Elon Musk on Carano’s end) was set to go before the jury.
Meanwhile, the female Expendables project was first announced in 2012, just as Sylvester Stallone‘s star-studded The Expendables 2 was storming into the theaters. Despite the controversies shadowing the blockbuster action sequel, its box office success ensured that the franchise was ripe for a spin-off, with Carano attached to it right from the get-go.

Brandon Routh is dodging a whole lot of Ick in our exclusive new clip from director Joseph Kahn’s pop punk creature feature.
Fathom Entertainment brings Ick to select theatres in New York and Los Angeles for a one-week theatrical run starting Thursday, July 24, before expanding to theaters nationwide July 27-29.
In the film, “For almost two decades, a viscous vine-like growth known colloquially as ‘The Ick’ has benignly crept into every nook and cranny of American life while the residents of small town Eastbrook remain blasé about its existence. The exceptions are former high school football star-turned-hapless science teacher Hank (Routh) and his sardonically perceptive student Grace (Weissman), who are thrown together by Grace’s mom Staci’s (Suvari) closely-guarded secret and a mutual suspicion that the Ick is about to unleash some monstrous mayhem.

After years of fans campaigning for a sequel to 2012's Dredd, it looks like they will get a new Judge Dredd movie, just not the one they expected. Created by writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra, Judge Dredd first appeared in the British weekly anthology comic 2000 Ad. A cult sci-fi hero, the character has had two film adaptations. The first was Sylvester Stallone's 1995 film, which disappointed fans and critics. 2012's Dredd, starring Karl Urban, earned positive critical reviews and, despite disappointing at the box office, gained a cult following.
Taika Waititi is set to direct a reboot of Judge Dredd, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Waititi's credits include the McU's Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, as well as critically acclaimed comedies such as The Hunt for the Wilderpeople, What We Do in the Shadows, and Jojo Rabbit. Film producer and screenwriter Adi Shankar, known among anime fans for his work on Netflix's Castlevania and Devil May Cry series, has sparked intense backlash from fans of Berserk after declaring the iconic manga series his own and teasing drastic changes, which included inserting himself into the story.
In a previous post on X (formerly Twitter), Adi Shankar said that he would helm a new Berserk adaptation, changing the lore and making Guts an "Adi Shankar self-insert." Although he later clarified that the post was intended as a troll one, a petition was still launched on Change.org with the stated goal to "protect Berserk from falling into the same pitfall as other franchises under Shankar's production." Shankar, however, appeared unfazed by the backlash, posting a screenshot of the petition with the simple two-word caption: "Cry Harder."

Devil May Cry is an iconic video game franchise that brings back so many memories for individuals of a certain age. Netflix decided to bring the demon hunter, Dante (Johnny Yong Bosch), to the small screen in its animated series of the same name, and the first season proved to be incredibly successful. Dante's skirmishes and battles with the demons from Hell, led by the White Rabbit (Hoon Lee), culminated in the season finale wherein the barrier separating the Human World and Hell split. The animated series was created by Adi Shankar and Alex Larsen, with the series renewed for a second season just one week after its debut on Netflix. Having only recently arrived, a second season of Devil May Cry might still be a ways off, but Shankar is already teasing what audiences might expect.

Devil May Cryseason 2 is coming soon, and it’s promising some big changes in how Dante is handled. As popular as the new Devil May Cry anime was, a major point of contention was Dante’s portrayal, as it made him far less competent a fighter who lost almost every fight he was in, something that even the angle of him being younger than in the games could hardly justify.
Dante’s portrayal was one of the many problems with Devil May Cry’s anime, but that’s poised to change in season 2. Series director Adi Shankar recently took to X to address the criticism of Dante’s poor showing in season 1, and sure enough, Devil May Cry director Adi Shankar confirms that Dante will get stronger in season 2 and become much closer to how he’s portrayed in the games. In a tweet that sent shockwaves through the anime and gaming community, Adi Shankar, producer behind Netflix’s Castlevania and the Devil May Cry series, declared, “Berserk = Mine. Lore = Changed. Guts = Adi Shankar Self-insert.” For fans of Kentaro Miura’s legendary dark fantasy manga, this statement has raised both eyebrows and hopes. Berserk is a revered and notoriously difficult story to adapt well, and many believe it deserves new, faithful treatment. But Shankar’s bold declaration has sparked as much caution as curiosity.
Shankar’s reputation as a passionate yet polarizing figure in geek media only complicates matters, according to fans like u/KvotheG on Reddit. Known for injecting stylized violence and emotional grit into his adaptations, his work on Castlevania season 1 was largely praised for its atmosphere, pacing, and surprisingly heartfelt story. After creating adaptations of Castlevania and Devil May Cry for Netflix, showrunner Adi Shankar has now set his sights on the Duke Nukem series. Per an interview with Esquire, Shankar revealed that he has acquired the screen rights from current Duke Nukem rights holder Gearbox Software.
When asked about his vision for the series, Shankar replied that it’s a middle finger to everybody. “When Duke Nukem blew up, a bunch of people sat around trying to turn it into a brand, when it’s just a middle finger. Duke Nukem can’t be made by a corporation, because the moment a corporation makes Duke Nukem, it’s no longer Duke Nukem. I don’t intend on having anyone tell me what to do on this one.”
Shankar didn’t elaborate any further on his acquisition, but did drop a bit more info on what other projects he currently has in the works.

Usually, it takes weeks to a few months for a series to be renewed. That wasn't the case for Netflix's Devil May Cry, created by film producer, screenwriter, and director Adi Shankar and animated by South Korean Studio Mir. Just one week after its release on April 3, 2025, the animated fantasy action series was renewed for a sophomore season. With only eight episodes, Devil May Cry holds an approval rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, with Collider's Aidan Kelley calling it "one of the best new animated shows of 2025." Praise this high might be nerve-wracking for most creators, with the pressure of keeping it up for the next season. However, Adi Shankar used the debut season as a "gateway drug" and said the next will be "different."
During an interview with Esquire, Shankar said his plan was always to expand the popular animated fantasy action series, and for Season 2, the storytelling is going to pivot.

It’s 2025, and if there’s one thing we didn’t expect to hear, it would be the recent news that Duke Nukem might be making a much-needed comeback. What was once an iconic part of 90s gaming has turned into a forgotten era, but this time, it’s coming back under the guidance of one of the most daring and successful video game-to-screen adapters of the modern era.
Adi Shankar, best known for his bold animated adaptations of Castlevania and Devil May Cry, has confirmed that he now owns the TV and film rights to Duke Nukem. If there’s anyone who can bring back our favorite crude, gun-slinging icon of the ’90s, it’s him.
Duke Nukem might finally get the comeback he deserves
In an interview with Esquire, Shankar revealed that he acquired the rights directly from Gearbox, but clarified that they don’t include the gaming rights.

Who can forget Adi Shankar’s Devil May Cry? The show that was supposed to be the Holy Grail of all gaming adaptations, but was booed for being an atrocious fanfic. You know it, we know it, everyone knows it. While the show was criticized, the “visionary” behind it, Adi Shankar, received a lot more hate for not being able to follow through on his promises.
No one has forgiven Adi Shankar to date, and his most recent interview with Esquire has reminded everyone about how they hated hearing him talk. The interview saw Adi Shankar calling himself a “generational f*cking talent”, with him later proclaiming himself to be the “guy who can save Hollywood”. You’ve got swag, Mr. Shankar, but let’s dissect that statement and see what we think of it.

Adi Shankar recently shared what’s next for Devil May Cry Season 2, and it sounds like a whole new ride. He calls the first season the “gateway drug,” but says the second season will switch things up completely. “Season 2 is going to be different, stylistically and tonally, from season 1. Virgil is a big, very important character. It’s essentially a new show,” he explained.
Shankar is setting big goals for Season 2. He wants to beat the success of huge animation hits like Arcane. His bold vision? “I want to show up to a tank fight with a water balloon and destroy the tank. Because that’s cool.”
But Shankar isn’t stopping there. He’s also turning his attention to another legendary video game character: Duke Nukem. Recently, he bought the rights to Duke Nukem, not the gaming rights, but the overall property, from Gearbox.

When the forces of hell are after you, it'll be smart to ask for a bit of help. In the new Netflix animated series, Devil May Cry, that help does not get better than the demon hunter, Dante (Johnny Yong Bosch). In a successful first season, Dante squares up with the unyielding White Rabbit (Hoon Lee), who would enact the final stage of his plan in the season finale and break the barrier separating the Human World and Makai (aka Hell or the Demon Underworld). The animated series was created by series creators Adi Shankar and Alex Larsen, with Shankar a devout fan of the property. With a second season already ordered, Shankar is set to build up a new universe based on a property he loves dearly.
Season 2 of Devil May Cryis on the way, and with it will come the continuation of Dante and Lady/Mary Arkham's (Scout Taylor-Compton) story.

Showrunner Adi Shankar took an unorthodox route to getting Devil May Cry greenlit, but it paid off.
"I had a wonderful meeting with Capcom. I'm a huge fan of their stuff -- I mean, who isn't, right? I grew up in Southeast Asia, so this was very much culturally in my DNA," Shankar told Deadline in an interview on how his new adaptation of the beloved hack-and-slash game franchise came together. He additionally revealed that, while going through the company's IPs to see which had adaptation potential, Shankar not only went straight for Devil May Cry, but presented distributor Netflix with a full pitch over the phone -- much to their initial chagrin.

"I got the rights from them, went off and developed the entirety of season one, all eight episodes," Shankar continued.

For Adi Shankar, the chance to create an animated series based on Capcom’s Devil May Cry video game series was an amazing opportunity. As a super fan of the property himself, he wasted no time in writing the scripts and developing the series… even before Netflix signed on to create it. Now, with one season already finished, and a second in the works, Shankar is working to build up a new universe based on one of his favorite properties.
Netflix’s Devil May Cry follows Dante (Johnny Yong Bosch), a young demon hunter who turns out to be the world’s best hope for salvation when a mysterious villain threatens to open the gates of Hell. Nicolas Cage has always followed his own unique rhythm when it comes to picking roles. Cage never quite plays it safe—and that’s exactly why audiences can’t take their eyes off him. Over the years, he’s become a magnet for internet memes, a favorite for offbeat roles, and a total legend in cult cinema circles. But beyond all the films he did take on, there’s a handful of iconic roles that were this close to landing in his lap.
Due to timing, travel hesitations, or just gut decisions, Cage had to pass them up, leaving those parts to other stars who, to be fair, did a pretty incredible job. Still, it’s a fun “what if” game to picture Cage stepping into these beloved characters. Here’s a look at five iconic roles that Nicolas Cage almost played—and how things might’ve looked very different if he had said yes.

Devil May Cry Season 1 has been extremely impressive with the wisecracking Dante, incredible fight scenes, intense music, and a lot of unexplored plot points. Dante’s story got a foundation in Season 1, but it felt like a lot was missing, more precisely, yet to be revealed.
For instance, although Dante takes the center stage, there is a lot of screen time given to Lady. Not to mention, certain weapons and mechanics have not been explained by the anime. Like, how Dante can have infinite ammo in his Barettas?
And why does he have Barettas? Where are Ebony and Ivory, his faithful companions? A lot of questions need answers, and from what the director, Adi Shankar, is saying, we might get them in Season 2.

When Netflix decided to adapt video game franchise Devil May Cry into a new animated series, the streamer knew that fans wanted to be surprised at every turn. They were, but soon after Season 1 premiered, they discovered that the surprises weren't limited to the series itself. The streamer brought Evanescence to perform one of the series' theme songs, and that was surprising enough. However, the music video for "Afterlife" revealed that there are even more surprises in store: the music video brought a sneak peek from Season 2 of the series.
With the characteristic red look from Devil May Cry, the music video from "Afterlife" is a good way to welcome the rock band after a four-year hiatus. It is also an excellent way for vocalist Amy Lee to announce that Evanescence is planning to release a new album in 2025. But for Devil May Cry fans, the music video had an extra special taste.

It won’t be the only title getting the spotlight, however, with director Alex Woo, production designer Steven Pilcher and VFX supervisor Nicola Lavender presenting never-before-seen footage from upcoming film “In Your Dreams,” handled by Kuku Studios.
Set for fall release, “In Your Dreams” is a comedy adventure that follows Stevie and her brother Elliot as they journey into the absurd landscape of their own dreams. “If the siblings can withstand a snarky stuffed giraffe, zombie breakfast foods and the queen of nightmares, the Sandman will grant them their ultimate...

There is barely anyone in the anime industry who is unfamiliar with the name Hideaki Anno. This beloved director and creator is known for the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. His latest work is Mobile Suit GQuuuuuuX, which premiered on April 9, 2025.
Anno worked as a co-writer for the series, although his degree of involvement is debated. Apparently, Anno’s role was limited to providing production support. But why did the Neon Genesis creator suddenly become involved in the already successful Gundam franchise?

Netflix and Adi Shankar’s Devil May Cry anime have been criticized by ardent fans of the franchise for making Dante, the protagonist, too weak. According to them, the pizza-loving, demon-slaying protagonist capable of battling godlike entities was reduced to a weak, absent-minded character who doesn’t resemble his videogame counterpart.
I believe we’ve blown this critique out of proportion. We haven’t considered the fact that we are seeing a younger, more inexperienced Dante. Instead of disgracing the franchise, this portrayal mirrors the progression of the games, setting the stage for him to become the cocky demon hunter we know and love.

India doesn’t need the West to criticize it when some of our own are doing a spectacular job of dragging the country down…all for a bit of spotlight. Case in point: Adi Shankar, the executive producer behind Netflix’s Devil May Cry anime.
While promoting the series, he decided to toss his hometown, Kolkata, under the bus, painting it in broad, bleak strokes as if poverty is the only thing the city has to offer. This wasn’t a thoughtful critique or nuanced reflection. This was lazy, stereotypical Bs meant to appeal to Western audiences who already view India through a one-dimensional lens.
And for what? To add some depth to an animated video game adaptation? If that’s the price for marketing a show, then maybe the show isn’t as bold or visionary as it pretends to be.

All that glitters isn’t gold, and the same can be said for Netflix’s Devil May Cry. The teaser and promotional videos looked promising, but fans aren’t happy with how it turned out. So far, it has received mixed reviews, but that is not all.
The marketing and hype garnered traction and views. This is true for the background score, the album, and impeccable animation. Studio Mir did a great job executing the action sequences. However, it has a glaring flaw that needs to be addressed and admitted.
In other words, the visionaries need to highlight and work on the major pitfalls associated with the series. This is crucial for the franchise, as most fans respond to the announcement of Season 2. But what exactly is the flaw that made fans flip the tables? Let’s unpack this.

Netflix’s Devil May Cry may have made its place in the world as one of the greatest video game adaptations in history, but there are some fans who still have a few complaints about the series. From non-understandable references to indifferent character developments, Devil May Cry could not live up to the expectations of the hardcore fans who loved the video game for years.
However, the one episode from the entire series that felt absolutely perfect was episode 6 of the series. Titled “The First Circle,” episode 6 gives fans a detailed explanation of the backstory of two important characters: Mary (or Lady if you like it that way) and the White Rabbit. While the episode does not feature the protagonist Dante, it still manages to prove itself the best.
The reason behind its perfection as an episode was the eccentric portrayal of the two characters’ past that got linked together in the end.

A month ago, we all thought Devil May Cry would be the coolest kid on the block. But it all started with a bang and ended with a whimper. Fans and their expectations were up in the air, but guess what, so was the hype. The series did have redeemable points, nonetheless.
It’s got great music, be it Limp Bizkit or Evanescence. This is reminiscent of the early 2000s and clears the vibe check. The nu-metal and rock songs were carefully crafted and selected, but it doesn’t salvage one of the core elements of the series.
To simplify things, Dante is a side character in his show for various reasons. This is mainly because of Lady, aka Mary Arkham, whose poor characterization left a sour taste in fans’ mouths. To make it even worse, the makers made him look more uncool by doing this exact thing.
Is Dante an uncool main character?...

Since at least his appearance in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, Karl Urban has been building quite the impressive resume, particularly carving out a niche for himself as a fan favorite in the Sci-Fi and Fantasy space. Although Urban hasn't quite become a household name in the same way some of his co-stars have, he continues to get pretty significant roles in high-profile movies and TV shows.
Some of the highlights of Urban's filmography from the late 90s to now include:
• Julius Caesar in the Sam Raimi-produced Hercules and Xena shows
• Éomer in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings
• Vaako in The Chronicles of Riddick
• Bones in the J. J. Abrams Star Trek reboot series
• Skurge the Executioner in Thor: Ragnarok

Netflix’s Devil May Cry might not have been the greatest addition to the franchise, but it was good nonetheless. Of course, there are many criticisms about with people pointing out loopholes in the plot or overall changes in character. But the one thing that has been bugging everyone is probably Dante’s character design.
Anyone who follows the Dmc universe will be able to tell that the latest iteration of the character is far removed from the others. Adi Shankar’s animation did not suit everyone’s tastes. And the protagonist in particular invited bad reviews, and that is exactly why season 2 has a lot to make up for.

Devil May Cry fans are torn over which animated adaptation was better, and for now, the ball is in Madhouse’s court. Netflix’s version did have updated visuals, but lacked the gothic aesthetic, which was undoubtedly more like Devil May Cry.
However, the little glimpses we got into the second season of Netflix’s Devil May Cry might just turn the tide in its favor. Dante’s updated look, with his iconic long hair and new outfit, while actually using Ebony and Ivory, has already hyped fans up for the second season.
The funniest part about the newfound excitement is that it wasn’t a separate Netflix sneak peek; it was from the music video for Evanescence’s Afterlife. The poster for the second season teased Dante’s hair, but the music video featured him in full action. Will Devil May Cry: The Animation be dethroned?

The world of video game adaptations was recently greeted with Studio Mir and Adi Shankar’s Devil May Cry series, which gained a lot of fame and recognition all over the world. In all honesty, the Devil May Cry series was a success and managed to establish itself as one of the greatest animated series that Netflix has ever released.
However, fans of the original Devil May Cry video game by Capcom know the reality of the story and thus do not connect with the series as much as the creators would have hoped. While the series is indeed based on the legendary science fantasy action-adventure game, it only embeds the characters and certain specific elements from it.
The rest of the narrative is completely different and does not draw any parallels, which became a big point of criticism for the Devil May Cry series. Not only that, there might...

Netflix’s new anime Devil May Cry has its fair share of compelling characters. One such character is Lady, or you can also call her Mary, who underwent a drastic change in the show. However, Adi Shankar’s version of Lady has ruffled some feathers!
Lady has been transformed from a cool, composed demon hunter who we all know and love into an angry, foul-mouthed antagonist who feels like a completely different character. The backlash is strong, but quite frankly, it is somewhat justified. But there’s room for improvement.
Instead of fixing her in season two, maybe we want to see Shankar embrace the chaos and make Lady the big bad villain. That’s a lot to throw on the table, but maybe it can flip the hate and leave us with an unforgettable character, but with a blend of twist.
Lady should be the mastermind villain in Devil May Cry

Devil May Cry is one of the most loved video games of all time. The stylish combat and the amazing background scores have entertained fans for the longest time. The protagonist of this series, Dante, is a fan favorite character, and fans love him for his strength. His half-demonic heritage grants him great power, and watching him mow through enemies is fun.
Netflix’s Devil May Cry changed this aspect of the character by making him weaker than the other characters. Netflix Dante is laughably weak, and this portrayal is a betrayal of his legacy. Could this nerfing be related to his new voice actor? Or was it due to bad storytelling?

But it isn’t just the art and animation that are largely great that have the fans talking about the show lately. We also got to see one last performance by the late Kevin Conroy in Netflix’s brand new anime.

Speaking about Conroy’s role in his work, the creator, Adi Shankar, recently opened up about how he was super nervous working with him.

Five weeks since it first hit Netflix, Adolescenceis still drawing more viewers and crushing more milestones. The acclaimed limited miniseries from Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham remains on the platform's global English Top 10 Shows list, though it has since given up the #1 spot to the hot docuseries Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing, which just barely surpassed it with 9.8 million views compared to 9.7 million. The fall to #2 hasn't slowed its rise on the all-time charts, though, as it has now topped 124 million views and moved into third place among all English-language shows, behind just Stranger Things Season 4 and Wednesday. It's just the latest major feat for the breakout success, which tackles the negative influence of incel culture and manosphere influencers on young men.
Although it was never meant to live beyond its four-episode run, the overwhelming response to the show has shifted the perspective of both Netflix and the series creators.

Adi Shankar’s rendition of Devil May Cry is nostalgic in every sense, be it music or animation. The fight scenes, on top of that, take the cake, especially with the nu-metal artists. It is a trip down memory lane in every aspect, but there are caveats to that as well.
The hype couldn’t salvage the Cringefest, especially with the female characters. This goes for Lady’s character and her exaggerated boisterousness in the series, which didn’t sit well with most fans. This is where Gundam comes in with its flawless characterization.

Few directors can boast about having mastered the art of subtle cultural references in storytelling, and Shinichiro Watanabe is one of them. The man is a visionary, and while he is working on Lazarus right now, he has previously worked on some of the most iconic anime like Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop.
He has worked on several notable projects and never fails to leave his mark on them. Lazarus is no exception. Watanabe proves he is still a master of cultural references and expert storytelling by naming the show’s villain after the Father of Operant Conditioning, Dr. B. F. Skinner.

The video game adaptation world has recently gotten a new project in the form of Devil May Cry by Adi Shankar on Netflix. It has been a few days since the series’ release, and it has made its place as one of the best anime of 2025. While most of the credit goes to the already-established Devil May Cry franchise, the story of the anime made an impact on its own.
The struggles and adventures of Demon Hunter Dante are the main focus of the story, but the series has also given a lot of importance to other significant characters like Lady and the White Rabbit. Shankar has truly put his heart and soul into the project, and before the release of the series, the showrunner reflected on the inspirations behind Devil May Cry.

Despite being an adaptation of a popular video game franchise, the audience has not well-received Netflix’s Devil May Cry. Every day, we see more reviews about how bad the show’s writing is, and most of these reviews come from ardent franchise fans.
These reviews are so concerning that there is a very real possibility that a large part of the audience will either turn a blind eye to the second season or criticize it even more than the first, both of which are things a media company like Netflix would like to avoid.

The anticipation among fans is sky-high, with Netflix’s announcement of a second season for the Devil May Cry anime just a week after the anime’s release.
This is not a usual thing to see in discussions among the fanbase.. While fans have positive reactions to the first season overall, there’s one area in particular that has drawn criticism that it absolutely does not deserve: the music.

Just to be clear, out of the many anime that have had releases this season, the Devil May Cry soundtrack straight-up slaps. The tracks are perfectly curated with an original and upbeat pulse-raising score. It isn’t just great; it is one of the most perfectly fitting things we have seen of Dante’s world.

The opening credits featured prominently Limp Bizkit’s “Rollin'”, raising more than a few eyebrows.

It’s only been a week since Netflix’s Devil May Cry was released, and a second season is already on the way. From the excitement of old fans to the controversial nature of the plotline, there’s no doubt it did well in terms of the view count that bagged it a second season.
The first season itself proved quite a few things about the creator and writer: they don’t understand Devil May Cry one bit. While an adaptation is very much allowed to be a different take on a storyline, changing the lore drastically is a bold move.

Despite the mixed reviews and how far off it was from Devil May Cry 3, some fans did enjoy the series, and the finale was brimming with potential, especially the reveal of Vergil’s human form and what his purpose might be in the storyline.

Devil May Cry is making headlines for introducing a world that instantly hooked even the non-fans of the franchise. The bleak and complex world, along with some very interesting characters, made this series one of the fastest shows to get a second season approved.
Even though some loved the show and the way it presented itself, many die-hard fans are not that happy. According to them, many creative liberties were taken here that removed the series from its original storyline.

However, not all is lost, as Adi Shankar, the creator behind the series, can very well learn from all the feedback and bounce back. Season 2 of Devil May Cry may even be better than Season 1.
