Bite is a welcome, refreshing addition to the body horror sub-genre. A visual treat with solid story, this film will keep viewers entertained in more ways than one.

The film opens with young bride-to-be Casey (Elma Begovic), and friends Jill (Annette Wozniak) and Kirsten (Denise Yuen), enjoying all that Costa Rica has to offer. At the encouragement of a handsome local, the girls decide to hike to a secluded water hole with the promise of beautiful waterfalls and crystal clear pools. It’s here that Casey is “bitten” by something in the water, though she and her compatriots don’t pay it much attention at the time. After all, they’re in the jungle and whatnot.

Upon returning home, however, Casey is confronted with the pressure of her upcoming nuptuals by both her fiancé (Jordan Grey) and his disapproving mother (Lawrene Denkers). To make matters worse, her mysterious bug bite...

It may be a bit rough around the edges, but there’s a lot to enjoy about director Chad Archibald’s Bite. In a day and age when most genre fans feel like they’ve seen just about everything, his take on body horror is boldly refreshing and offers up a few unexpected twists that I genuinely appreciated. Bite also boasts some of the most impressive production design and practical special effects I’ve seen on the indie level in some time, and it is anchored by an effectively unnerving performance by up-and-coming actress Elma Begovic.

In case you haven’t noticed, the horror scene in Canada is a-boomin’. Over the last year, a new re-emergence in Canuxploitation has been hitting the international markets with a fury, as seen in such films as Hobo with a Shotgun, Monster Brawl (here), Father’s Day (here), In the House of Flies, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, Pontypool, and in what might be the best of these recently released, Exit Humanity.

Killer Film caught up with director John Geddes to chat about the Civil War-based zombie story, while he is knee deep in post. Read on!

Jon: How did Exit Humanity get going? Were you interested in the Civil War prior?

John Geddes: I have always had a passion for the history of the Civil War. It was an incredible time in American history where so many lived in despair yet they showed amazing resilience and kept hope for a better world ahead.
