At first glance, Lookism is all about tackling society's shallow pursuit of having the perfect appearance. The webtoon's main character, Daniel Park, is the embodiment of that. After all, Daniel has undergone a unique transformation, shifting from being a victim of bullying and discrimination to having a chance at a new life in a more attractive body.

But as Lookism's narrative progresses, it shifts more toward juvenile gangs. It features rivalries between groups, often pitting them in one bloody brawl after another. New Us Trailer for Western Action Film 'Buffalo Boys' from Indonesia
"Let's give our people their justice." Samuel Goldwyn has released an official Us trailer for a western action film titled Buffalo Boys, coming from Indonesia (where it's set), and produced out of Singapore. This just premiered at the Fantasia and New York Asian Film Festivals this fall, and is also this year's Singaporean Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language Film. This "fun old-school western flick" is about two brothers named Jamar and Suwo who return to the land of Java to avenge their father, a murdered Sultan, after years of exile in America working on the railroads, and being cowboys. But they end up in a fight for their lives. The main cast of Buffalo Boys includes Yoshi Sudarso, Ario Bayu, Pevita Pearce, Tio Pakusadewo, Conan Stevens, Reinout Bussemaker, Zack Lee, and Sunny Pang. Holy hell, this looks badass!! Get a load of this, seriously - the action actually looks clear and kinetic.

Film Review: The Night Comes For Us (2018) by Timo Tjahjanto
In an interview I had with Timo Tjahjanto in 2017, in a question about the appeal of violence on screen, he stated: “Violence speaks to me easily, and I think way too easy, to the point that I find myself often fighting hard for self-restraint. I think that’s where Kimo usually comes to play, he is the guy that put breaks on my violence-throttle”. Well, let’s just say that Kimo is nowhere to be found in this movie.

At the height of its power, the South East Asian Triad controls 80% of Asia’s smuggling activities. Utilizing the notorious Golden Triangle as the main hub, the Triad profits heavily from illegal drugs, weapons and human trafficking. To keep the channels free from chaos and outside disturbance, the Triad leaders created a small formation of elite delegates called the Six Seas, which allowed them free reign to perform extreme measures, all...

Iko Uwais in The Night Comes for Us (2018)
Film Review: ‘The Night Comes for Us’
Iko Uwais in The Night Comes for Us (2018)
Action fans could hardly wish for anything more than what’s served up in “The Night Comes for Us,” a Jakarta-set Triad crime epic boasting some of the most inventive, gory, and dazzlingly choreographed screen violence in recent memory. Confidently executed by Indonesian writer-director Timo Tjahjanto, whose credits as one half of the Mo Brothers team include “Killers” and “Headshot,” this cartoonish cavalcade of carnage potently reunites “The Raid” stars Joe Taslim and Iko Uwais as former friends on a corpse-strewn collision course. Though confusing at times and a little too much of a good thing at two hours, “Night” should satisfy the target audience via Netflix, where it launches Oct. 19.

An extremely energetic workout on the familiar tale of a criminal who turns his back on the mob following a crisis of conscience, “Night” sets things up with text information about “The Six Seas,” an elite squad of Triad enforcers.

Film Review: Buffalo Boys (2018) by Mike Wiluan
In one of the latest tendencies in Asian cinema, production companies from S. Korea and Japan have begun penetrating the Indonesian market, financing local filmmakers to shoot big budget productions (for the country’s standards that is). Cj Entertainment financed Joko Anwar’s “Satan Slaves” for example, while in this case, Nikkatsu funded Mike Wiluan, producer of films like “Headshot” and “Macabre”, to shoot a Western with an Indonesian flavor. The result was this particular movie.

“Buffalo Boys” is screening at the 17th New York Asian Film Festival

In 1860, Arana, Jamar and Suwo return to Indonesia after fleeing to America decades ago, following the massacre of sultan Hamza by Captain Van Trach, during an Indonesian uprising against the Dutch. The sole purpose of the three is to exact revenge from Van Trach. During their search, they stumble upon a group attacking Kiona and her grandfather, and proceed on saving the two.

‘Headshot’ Review
Stars: Iko Uwais, Chelsea Islan, Sunny Pang, Very Tri Yulisman, Julie Estelle, Ario Bayu, Yayu A.W. Unru, Zack Lee | Written by Timo Tjahjanto | Directed by Kimo Stamboel, Timo Tjahjanto

Following the standard set by a certain punchy tower-block inhabiting modern classic, any Indonesian action movie is going to have their work cut out for them for the next decade or so. Even that film’s own follow-up, The Raid 2 (come on, you knew what we were talking about) paled in comparison to its predecessor, which Judge Dredd himself struggled to live up to.

Taking a jab at the crown is Headshot, an equally violent, no-holds barred action movie which stars none other than The Raid’s Iko Uwais. Shot in the head (hence the title) and left for dead, amnesiac ‘Ishmael’ washes up on an Indonesian shore and, after a short coma, is nursed back to health by lovely...

‘Headshot’ Trailer: Iko Uwais Loses His Memory and Kicks Ass in Martial Arts Action Film
Sunny Pang, Julie Estelle, Zack Lee, Iko Uwais, Very Tri Yulisman, Chelsea Islan, and David Hendrawan in Headshot (2016)
Timo Tjahjanto and Kimo Stamboel’s martial arts action film, “Headshot,” premiered in the Midnight Madness section of the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. Now after getting plenty of buzz during its festival run, Xyz Films and Vertical Entertainment have released a new trailer of the upcoming picture.

Starring Iko Uwais, known for his lightening-quick agility in “The Raid,” the action flick follows the actor as Ishmael, a man with amnesia, who, with the help of his devoted student doctor Ailin (Chelsea Islan), tries to regain his memory. Soon their lives collide with a gang of dangerous criminals and, with every violent confrontation, Ishmael begins to regain memories of who he used to be.

Blistering First Trailer For Headshot Finds The Raid’s Iko Uwais Back In Action
With its relatively simple premise and mesmerizing fight choreography, Welsh filmmaker Gareth Evans produced a modern-day cult classic in The Raid: Redemption five years ago, a low-budget thriller that crammed in more stomach-churning deaths and dizzying Silat stunts that you can shake a machete at. It also fostered a kick-ass working relationship between Evans and Indonesian action star Iko Uwais, who went on to reunite for The Raid 2 in 2014.

Headlining two critically-acclaimed action movies in the space of three years undoubtedly put Uwais on the international map, and with Tiff 2016 looming large, the actor is returning to the fray for amnesiac thriller, Headshot.

Directed by Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto – the latter of whom penned the screenplay – what has us cautiously optimistic for this latest Uwais-fronted actioner is how Headshot looks to balance its visceral, bone-crunching action with a story that, at least based on today’s brief trailer,...
