Ryan Reynolds & Samuel L. Jackson reluctantly team up in the red band trailer for The Hitman’s Bodyguard
Author: Zehra Phelan

Warning: This news bulletin contains a trailer with a suggested parental guidance notice, should be the words uttered when witnessing the brand new red band trailer for Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson’s hilarious profanity-laden The Hitman’s Bodyguard.

Interview: Writer/Director Abner Pastoll and Co-Star Barbara Crampton Talk Road Games
One of the more intriguing thrillers I’ve seen in some time is Road Games, which was written and directed by Abner Pastoll and recently debuted on VOD courtesy of IFC Midnight. Starring Andrew Simpson, Joséphine de La Baume, Barbara Crampton, and Frédéric Pierrot, the film begins as a whodunit road movie and is later infused with some unexpectedly fun slasher undertones.

Daily Dead recently sat down with both Pastoll and genre legend Crampton to hear more about their collaboration, Pastoll’s approach to crafting the film’s mystery, their experiences shooting Road Games, and much more.

Congrats on making a movie that keeps you guessing and takes a few unexpected turns. Abner, what were your inspirations behind this story and your approach to really toying with viewers?

Abner Pastoll: In terms of playing with people’s suspicions, those inspirations are totally from Hitchcock’s films because he would always do that.

Road Games | Review
Hitchin’ a Ride: Pastoll’s Debut an Assortment of Tropes

No, it’s not a remake of the 1981 Richard Franklin thriller starring Stacy Keach and Jamie Lee Curtis, but Abner Pastoll’s debut borrows the title, along with elements from a number of other, far better narratives for Road Games. Curiously, for most of the running time, his characters are actually not even on the road, but this is only one of several aggravating details in a film laboring to conjure thrills solely through the use of withholding pertinent information from the audience for an improbable reveal. Though it has all the right elements to convey technical proficiency, this is a watered down genre treatment which does disservice to notable cast members, which includes amongst its talent the strange plumage of 80s cult star Barbara Crampton.

Jack (Andrew Simpson) is unwisely hitchhiking down a desolate rural road as he attempts...

Review: Road Games is a Riveting Thriller That Will Keep You Guessing Until the Very End
I love movies like Road Games that seem to toy with you from beginning to end, and yet, sometimes those are the hardest films to discuss in a review because you never want to reveal too much for potential viewers. That being said, writer/director Abner Pastoll does a fantastic job of playing up suspicions throughout Road Games, a film that’s shrouded in a dubious sense of mystery and has a bit of a Hitchcockian sensibility to it as well. Its ending may be a bit divisive to many, but I dug the direction Pastoll goes with his surprising, take-no-prisoners finale.

Road Games follows British hitchhiker Jack (Andrew Simpson) as he makes his way through the sun-soaked countryside in France, traveling with only his passport and doing everything he can to get back home to England after his idyllic vacation goes horribly wrong. Along the way, he crosses paths...

Seat Belts Can’t Protect You From These Road Games
Jack’s (Andrew Simpson) European trip has slowed down some since hitting the French countryside as the number of passing motorists willing to give him a lift has dwindled to zero. He catches a distracting break when a car stops — not to pick him up, but to drop off Véronique (Joséphine de La Baume) after a violent argument with her boyfriend — giving him someone to talk with while awaiting the next good Samaritan. The two hit it off despite his limited French vocabulary, and he quickly learns why getting a ride has been so difficult. A serial killer has been stalking the rural roads. At this point some of you more familiar with the slasher/killer genre might suspect this film is a remake of Richard Franklin’s identically-titled Australian chiller from 1981 starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Stacy Keach. It is not. The pair are saved — at least temporarily — when a man named Grizard (Frédéric Pierrot) picks...

Road Games Review
Somewhere between The Hitcher and High Tension exists Abner Pastoll’s Road Games, a bright, colorful descent into hitchhiking madness. Of course, with the mention of Alexandre Aja’s *arguably* mind-bending thriller, one can assume there’s more to Pastoll’s story than meets the eye. A killer terrorizes lonely travelers begging for a quick ride, but his/her identity remains masked, because he/she could be any of the (few) characters we’ve already encountered. For an hour and a half, Pastoll unfolds this countryside”Whodunit” caper – one littered with distracting red herrings – but, herein lies the problem: the mystery itself isn’t very mysterious.

Andrew Simpson stars as Jack, a ride-needing wanderer who can’t seem to catch a break. While seeking transportation, he’s joined by a female companion named Véronique (Joséphine de La Baume), who gets thrown out of a car after bickering with its male driver.

Two thumbs up, or out — if you’re a hitchhiker, that is. IFC Midnight will release Abner Pastol’s road-trip-cum-romantic-thriller Road Games on March 4 in New York and Los Angeles. Check out the trailer above. Here’s how IFC describes it:

After a disastrous summer trip, Jack (Andrew Simpson) finds himself hitchhiking through the sun-drenched rural French countryside with nothing but his British passport. Unaware of dangers that are plaguing the roads, he tries without much success to get home. Along the way, he partners up with another hitchhiker, a beautiful French girl, Véronique (Josephine De La Baume). But when they accept a ride from a local oddball (Frédéric Pierrot), the pair finds themselves thrown in a deadly game of cat and mouse in which nothing is what it seems. Bursting with nonstop twists and turns and an undercurrent of Hitchcockian malice, this riveting psychological thriller is a hell of a ride.

Frightfest 2015: ‘Road Games’ Review
Stars: Barbara Crampton, Andrew Simpson, Joséphine de La Baume, Frédéric Pierrot, Lou Castel | Written and Directed by Abner Pastoll

Set in rural France (but shot for the most part here in the UK) Road Games sees hitchhiker Jack rescues Véronique from a road rage altercation. Alone on the road the twosome decide to travel together for safety’s sake after learning a serial killer is cutting a murderous swathe through the region. Tired and hungry they decide against their better judgment to take up an offer to stay the night at a mysterious elderly couple’s mansion…

It’s safe to say the story in Road Games is actually a well-worn trope of the horror genre – so much so that my suspicions about where the film was headed was all but confirmed way before the big reveal (that may also be because I’ve seen way too many horror films...

Amy Winehouse in Amy (2015)
Mark Ronson praises Asif Kapadia's "respectful" Amy Winehouse documentary
Amy Winehouse in Amy (2015)
Mark Ronson has said that he finds Asif Kapadia's documentary Amy to be "respectful" of its late subject Amy Winehouse.

The musician, who worked closely with the 'Valerie' singer during her career, also admitted that the film is a "tough" watch.

Amy review: Asif Kapadia's stunning Amy Winehouse documentary provokes awe and anger

After seeing the film with his wife Joséphine de La Baume, Ronson said: "Obviously, it's tough to watch the film because it brings back memories.

"But what I love about it is that my wife never got to meet Amy and I am always telling her stories about us in the studio and the clever, witty things that Amy would say.

"We watched it and my wife said, 'Now I get it, now I see the Amy you talked about'. I forget that not everyone got to see that side of her."

Listen Up Philip review: Jason Schwartzman's acerbic character study
Alex Ross Perry
Director: Alex Ross Perry; Screenwriter: Alex Ross Perry; Starring: Jason Schwartzman, Elisabeth Moss, Jonathan Pryce, Joséphine de La Baume, Krysten Ritter; Running time: 108 mins; Certificate: 15

The daggers are out for Jason Schwartzman's novelist Philip Lewis Friedman in this acerbic comic character study that doubles as a rib-tickling guide in how to lose friends and alienate people. Indeed, it's the titular writer who is the architect of his own misery (not the critics) by treating people with disdain. Similarly, writer/director Alex Ross Perry challenges viewers by making his antihero so anti-everything.

Playing the erudite idiot is second nature to Schwartzman, having done so in films dating back to Wes Anderson's Rushmore, and it's hard to imagine anyone else hurling elaborate insults with the same devastatingly flat delivery. His arrogance is countered by a deliciously dense voiceover from Eric Bogosian who speaks with the air of superiority you would...

Joséphine de La Baume: meet Hollywood's new French dream girl
She plays the fantasy girlfriend in a hip new film, all Gitanes and Gallic attitude – but the model-actor-singer (and DJ Mark Ronson’s other half) says she’s a tomboy at heart

French women. Wow. One would prefer to believe it’s all a cliche: the black eyeliner, the Gitanes purr, the wind-you-round-their-chipped-Chanel-nail-varnished-little-finger pout. Except here I am, perched at one end of a sofa in a studio in the 11th arrondissement of Paris with Joséphine de La Baume curled up at the other end, a one-woman forcefield of feline, Gallic charm. The slow smile, the sleepy, half-closed eyes, the hand absent-mindedly raking hair off her face. She has an easy sensuality that – seemingly without trying – casts the bronzed, hard-bodied, Americanised version of hotness into the shade.

But you know what? It’s actually a total drag, being young Hollywood’s go-to French Dream Girl. “I always get the girl...

If You Don’t, I Will | DVD Review
For her fifth feature, If You Don’t, I Will, director Sophie Fillieres reunites with star Emmanuelle Devos to document the wistful disintegration of a relationship that probably should have ended years prior. Premiering at the 2014 Berlin Film Festival, the title received a very limited theatrical engagement in New York at the end of the year, which is a pity considering the attraction of its two lead performers. At times droll in its routine procedure of two beings unwisely torturing one another for the sake of familiarity, Fillieres dips the film into more emotionally evasive territories in its second half that maintains a dark, comedic edge even as it grapples with examining the self-made traps people back themselves into.

Pomme (Devos) and Pierre (Mathieu Amalric) have been together for fifteen years, now alone after their son Romain (Nelson Delapalme) has left for college. We see them engaged in bitter resentment from the start,...

Interview: Jason Schwartzman Hears All in ‘Listen Up Philip’
Chicago – Jason Schwartzman likes to portray writers – he was one in his HBO series “Bored to Death” – and he portrays one in his latest film, “Listen Up Philip.” He also has played many characters in director Wes Anderson’s universe, and did a fantastic turn as composer Richard M. Sherman in last year’s “Saving Mr. Banks.”

The laconic and dryly witty Schwartzman was born in Los Angeles, the son of actress Talia Shire (Adrian in “Rocky” and director Francis Ford Coppola’s sister) and producer Jack Schwartzman. He was discovered at age 17 by director Anderson, when he starred in the cult epic, “Rushmore” (1998). He has continued in the Anderson acting company, also starring in “The Darjeeling Limited,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “Moonrise Kingdom” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” for the director. He’s also done memorable work in “I Heart Huckabees,” “Funny People” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.”

'Listen Up Philip' (2014) Movie Review
About to publish his second novel and at the current peak of his career, Philip Lewis Friedman (Jason Schwartzman) is burning bridges with just about everyone in his life: his ex, his college roommate, his publisher, his colleagues, his girlfriend, no one is safe. He has become resentful toward those around him because he thinks they're beneath him. He is selfish and unsentimental, and when people call him on it, he wonders if that's a bad thing. Everything in the world revolves around Philip, at least in his mind. Given the film's first scene, which sees Philip meeting his ex-girlfriend for lunch so he can brag about his recent success, it seems he has always been this way, incapable of understanding how repugnant he is, how his blatant narcissism and intense disinterest in others make him a true asshole. Weeks before the release of his book, Philip decides not to...

‘Birdman,’ ‘Dear White People,’ ‘Hiroshima Mon Amour’ Lead Weekend’s Specialty Debuts
Kristen Stewart in Camp X-Ray (2014)
Perched at the top of this week’s flock of specialty film debuts is Birdman (Or The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance), a possible Oscar contender starring Michael Keaton. Though it’s a limited release, Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s complex film about a fading action-hero trying to reclaim his mojo on Broadway nevertheless combines elements of a superhero franchise that could tap fans well beyond the art house.

It’s part of yet another big flock of specialty film debuts coming this weekend, including the controversy-minded Sundance award-winner Dear White People, William H. Macy‘s directorial debut Rudderless, Kristen Stewart‘s Camp X-Ray, Jason Schwartzman‘s Listen Up Philip, The Golden Era, Summer Of Blood, and one great revival, Alain Resnais’ 1959 landmark Hiroshima Mon Amour.

To get a sense of Fox Searchlight’s ambitions for Birdman, the film closed the New York Film Festival last weekend to strong reviews, but then...

Interview: Jason Schwartzman & Alex Ross Perry Discuss Misanthrophy Of 'Listen Up Philip'
This interview originally ran during the Sundance Film Festival. "Listen Up Philip" opens up in limited release on October 17. One of the most buzzed-about films at Sundance last week was Alex Ross Perry’s latest, “Listen Up Philip,” starring Jason Schwartzman as a misanthropic novelist without a filter, in what’s being called “his best role since 'Rushmore' " (read our A-grade review here). The stellar cast is rounded out by Elisabeth Moss as Philip’s long-suffering girlfriend, Jonathan Pryce as his egotist-author role model (based, most likely, on Philip Roth), and a string of past and potential paramours (Dree Hemingway, Joséphine de La Baume, Kate Lyn Sheil). Even the peripheral acting by Krysten Ritter and Jess Weixler is first-rate, allowing Perry’s work to shine like it never has before. Perry’s writing is on fire too, with Schwartzman often delivering I-can’t-believe-he-said-that lines with a visceral and hilarious punch.

Philip A. Dick: Perry’s Literary Minds Stuck In a Lonely Place

Following up his dark hearted homage to road trip cinema with 2011’s The Color Wheel, Alex Ross Perry’s third film, Listen Up Philip arrives with an equally unpleasant set of main characters as it explores the hyper intellectual worldview of self-important authors wallowing in their emotional ennui. But the self-involved narcissists occupying Perry’s arena also happen to be impressively fleshed out compelling characters that makes this triptych of their miserable emotional periods so engrossing. Sprawling, unkempt, and often unlikeable, it’s one of the most impressively written and astutely performed films you’ll see this year.

We meet Philip (Jason Schwartzman) as he meets up with an ex-girlfriend for lunch, basically to gloat over his looming success as an author, celebrating the publication of his first novel. An omniscient narrator (Eric Bogosnian) begins to guide us through Philip’s (and eventually,...

You’ll Love to Hate Jason Schwartzman in Listen Up Philip Trailer
Here’s the second trailer for writer-director Alex Ross Perry's Listen Up Philip. I caught the film at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. While the performances from the entire cast are top notch, I found it really difficult to get into the movie. Despite Jason Schwartzman turning in his absolute comedic best as a beyond self-absorbed author, the film is less a dark comedy and more of a dreary drama — and a draining one at that. But for what Schwartzman brought to this likable A-hole it may be worth sitting through some of the story’s fat.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Anger rages in Philip (Schwartzman) as he awaits the publication of his second novel. He feels pushed out of his adopted home city by the constant crowds and noise, a deteriorating relationship with his photographer girlfriend Ashley (Elizabeth Moss), and his own indifference to promoting the novel.

Listen Up, Philip Trailer Plunges Jason Schwartzman into Ego Gratification
After a teaser trailer that was decidedly retro, Listen Up, Philip (the new film from The Color Wheel director Alex Ross Perry) gets a more conventional trailer that still isn't pulling any punches when it comes to the mean-spirited (yet creatively accurate, in my opinion) subject matter. The pic stars Jason Schwartzman as a self-obsessed author awaiting the publication of his “sure-to-succeed” second novel. Facing a deteriorating relationship with his girlfriend (Elisabeth Moss), uncomfortableness at his home, and an indifference to promoting his novel, Philip is offered the chance to retreat to the summer home of his idol, played by Jonathan Pryce. Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Krysten Ritter, Josephine de La Baume, Jess Weixler, Dree Hemingway, Keith Poulson, and Eric Bogiosan. Tribeca films releases Listen Up, Philip in theaters on October 17th. I'll be there. Here’s the official synopsis for Listen Up,...
