The film is a tense and terrifying story of love, loss, and deception that sees people pushed to their limits. For the girls and gays around the world, seeing Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway go toe-to-toe in a 60s-set drama is how Id imagine people felt the first time Godzilla took on Kong. Two titans of the industry, each with their own Oscar and several nominations, dressed in Jackie-esque outfits as they fix cocktails and pretend they arent on the brink of mental collapse, sounds like what cinema was created for on paper. French filmmaker Benot Delhommes Mothers' Instinct is a remake of the 2018 French film by the same name (Duelle in French), which was loosely based on the 2012 novel, Behind the Hatred (Derrire la haine in French) by Barbara Abel.

Some tales are so powerful they require more than adaptation. This is certainly the case for the upcoming Mothers' Instinct, the movie adaptation of the 2012 Barbara Abel novel, Derrire La Haine, that blew readers away with its detailed, gripping tale of love, loss, and paranoia. The first adaptation came in the form of Olivier Masset-Depasse's 2018 film, which screened as a special presentation at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. The film, starring Veerle Baetens as Alice Brunelle and Anne Coesens as Cline Geniot, received ten nominations at the 10th Magritte Awards, winning in nine of its categories and earning Masset-Depasse Best Director and Best Film accolades.

A ’60s-set psychodrama about a pair of suburban housewives whose friendship goes haywire — and then some — after one of their children dies in a freak accident, the misconceived but morbidly entertaining “Mothers’ Instinct” is far too slapdash to respect the seriousness of its premise, but at the same time also far too serious to indulge in the campiness of its plot. The result is a movie that’s a little fucked up, a little fun, and mostly just very, very sad in a way that it doesn’t have the heart to explore.
Alice is the fragile one, at least at first. A crumbling eggshell of a woman who’s just been glued back together by the most discrete male psychiatrists in all of Mayberry, she can hardly make breakfast for her seven- or eight-year-old son Theo (Eamon O’Connell) without threatening to flake apart from the pressure to keep up appearances.

The Anne Hathaway- and Jessica Chastain-starring psychological thriller “Mothers’ Instinct” is set for release in Chinese theaters.
Directed by cinematographer-turned-helmer Benoît Delhomme, the 1960s film depicts a pair of model homemakers and next-door neighbors whose close friendship is severely undone by sudden tragedy. The film is an English-language remake of the 2108 French-language effort by Belgium’s Olivier Masset-Depasse’s film, which was an adaptation of the 2012 novel “Derriere La Haine” by Barbara Abel.
The film will release in China on May 24 on 2,500 screens. That likely sets it in competition with “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” as another English-language title releasing on that date, Variety has confirmed.
The film has had a handful of international releases and is also set for a North American outing at an unspecified date through Neon. The China release follows an agreement between sales firm Anton Corp and Chinese distributor Jl Film.

Franchise animation Kung Fu Panda 4 and creature clash Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire lead a bumper weekend of 16 new films at the UK-Ireland box office.
Universal’s Kung Fu Panda 4 has the biggest opening of the weekend in 715 sites – a significant jump for the series, after 2008’s Kung Fu Panda (448) and sequels in 2011 (514) and 2016 (585), all through Paramount.
Conversely, the total grosses of each film have dropped, with the first title making £20.4m, followed by £17m and £14.2m for the sequels. All of these were pre-pandemic; number four will look to cross the £10m mark before challenging any of those totals.

Esteemed cinematographer Benoît Delhomme’s credits have included a conspicuous number of thoughtful, visually sumptuous period pieces, such as The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Theory of Everything and Lady Chatterley’s Lover, as well as a few films made to promote fashion brands like Balmain, Dior and Chanel. In a way, that résumé partially explains why he might have been inclined to make his directorial debut with Mothers’ Instinct, for which he also serves as the Dp.
This pulpy, psychologically shallow and yet beautifully shot period thriller is all about two soignée suburban housewives — played by Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway — who spend the film’s 96 minutes suffering, scheming and losing their minds while wearing immaculate vintage-inspired costumes. Ultimately, the characters’ motivations, like their titular instinct, are weakly delineated, but viewers are well-advised not to worry their pretty little heads about any of that and just concentrate on the pantsuits.

Another one of those titles that felt more than ready for a 2023 drop, that could be plopped a bit anywhere next year — we guess it depends on how they want to push the Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway two-hander. After being a cinematographer dating back to The Scent of Green Papaya (1993) and then films such as The Proposition (2005) and At Eternity’s Gate (2018), Benoît Delhomme switched hats for this debut film. Mother’s Instinct based on Barbara Abel’s novel “Derrière la Haine” and went into production in June of last year in NYC. Josh Charles and Anders Danielsen Lie also star.…...

The story is based on the 2012 novel Behind the Hatred (Derrière la haine) by Barbara Abel. Jessica Chastain is sharing her autograph policy. The Oscar winner was recently captured in a viral video turning down signing a copy of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” novel following her performance in Broadway revival of “A Doll’s House” at the Hudson Theatre, outside of which she regularly greets fans.
“I can’t sign that, just because I’m not doing it,” Chastain says to the fan in the video. The “Molly’s Game” star later took to Twitter to explain her reasoning for declining to sign books such as these.
“I’ve been asked multiple times by fans, to sign books that I’m not attached to contractually. Because it feels wrong, and like I’m taking credit for someone else’s work, I’ll say I can’t sign because I’m not doing it,” Chastain wrote. “That doesn’t mean I’ve read a bad script.

Jessica Chastain just sent BookTok into a frenzy.
The Oscar winner finally responded to the long-running fan casting of Netflix’s upcoming “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” adaptation.
During an appearance on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live,” Cohen brought up the project. “Jessica, are you aware — we got this a lot — of how many people want you to play Celia St. James in the film adaptation of the novel ‘The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’?” Cohen asked Chastain.
The “George and Tammy” actress replied, “I do know there is an online thing about it. Sure, send me a script.”
Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel follows the titular Golden Age movie star as she confides in a modern-day journalist about her controversial past. Celia St. James is a fellow actress and close friend of Evelyn’s.
Social media account DeuxMoi struck down a former fan theory that Anya Taylor-Joy was rumored to be attached.

Earlier this year, we shared the news that Academy Award winners Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables) and Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) – who also happen to be close friends in their personal lives – would be starring in the psychological thriller Mothers’ Instinct, a remake of the 2018 Belgian film Duelles, which was loosely based on Barbara Abel’s 2012 novel Behind the Hatred (Derrière la haine). At the time, Duelles director Olivier Masset-Depasse was also at the helm of this English-language telling of the story, but he ended up having to drop out due to a family commitment. Mothers’ Instinct did make it into production with cinematographer Benoit Delhomme (The Theory of Everything) directing, making his feature directorial debut. The film recently wrapped, and during an interview with Vogue Hong Kong Hathaway revealed that she found it very difficult to play her role in this movie.

Anne Hathaway had to ignore her first instinct to run away from the psychological terror of filming “Mother’s Instinct.”
The Oscar winner revealed that she had to tackle her “worst fear” alongside Jessica Chastain for upcoming thriller “Mother’s Instinct,” directed by Olivier Masset-Depasse. “Mother’s Instinct” is a remake of Belgium helmer Masset-Depasse’s 2017 film “Duelles,” based on the novel “Derrière la Haine” by novelist Barbara Abel.
The official synopsis reads: Set in the 1960s, “Mothers’ Instinct” centers on best friends and neighbors Alice (Chastain) and Celine (Hathaway), who live in a suburban paradise. Both are mothers to two sons of the same age, and their idyllic domestic happiness is shattered after a tragic accident. Guilt, suspicion, and paranoia bleed into their friendship as a psychological battle of wills gives way to a darker side of the maternal instinct.
